amilies traveled from near and far to visit their loved ones Sat. Sept 20 for the University of New Haven’s annual Family Day. UNH had a plethora of events throughout the day for families to choose from; the activities ranged widely so there would be something for everyone and no one was left out. UNH offered over 50 activities throughout the course of the day. These events ranged from physic readings and face painting to a tour of West Haven and a Taste of New Haven Food Tour. “There’s a great schedule,” Melissa Rourke, freshman, added. “I like how there’s things for little kids to do, so siblings can have fun too while families
–––––––––––––––––––––––––– are visiting.” Family Day is organized by the Office of Student Activities. Assistant Director of Student Activities Shelissa Newball was in charge of coordinating the event this year. “I think it went well this year,” she said. “It was a little chaotic but I think the families had a good time.” Newball has been working on Family Day since May of 2014. “We had a committee that helped plan the day, but it was a big team effort. Not just OSA was involved, but the Office of Residential Life as well, and all of campus,” she said. “It took a lot of planning and everyone on campus played a major role in this event.” “Everything UNH does is very organized, from move in day to family day,” said Tim See FAMILIES page 2

University of New Haven student leaders met on Tues., Sept 16 to participate in the White House Campaign Preview Call to discuss the #ItsOnUs campaign. The call was facilitated by Tina Tchen, Assistant to the President and the First Lady’s Chief of Staff, as well as Kyle Lierman, White House Liaison to Young Americans. President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden launched the #ItsOnUs campaign on Friday, Sept 19. This campaign is a cultural movement aimed at shifting the way society thinks about sexual assault. It is also about “raising awareness, holding ourselves and each other accountable, and looking out for someone who cannot consent,” according to the official #ItsOnUs website. More than 800 student leaders from 46 states participated in the White House Campaign Preview Call, which was an opportunity for students to voice their questions, thoughts and concerns about the campaign. It was also a way for campuses to prepare for the launch and to plan out how they’d go about promoting and sharing their involvement with #ItsOnUs. “I think this is very important for our university to be a part of,” Undergraduate Student Government Association President Richard Rotella said. “The campaign was something that was presented to me over the summer and I knew it was something UNH would jump to be a part of.” Rotella, along with Title IX/ Clery Compliance Coordinator Ashley Guerrera and representa-

tives from different organizations on campus, including the Charger Bulletin, the Office of Residential Life, the Black Student Union, Victimology Club, athletics and Greek life, participated in the conference call. “It was an honor to be able to be a part of something that is going to be happening on a national level,” said Ashley McElhare, president of the All Greek Council and representative of Greek life for the conference call. Amber Crow, the senior residential assistant of Bethel Hall, believes that it is very important for ORL to be involved with this campaign.
“The residential students make up a vast majority of our undergraduate student body and the residential life staff is responsible for keeping our students safe,” Crow said. “We need to be as prepared as possible and as educated as possible so that we can work together to keep our campus safe.” One in five women and one in 16 men are sexually assaulted in college, according to the facts presented by #ItsOnUs. Nearly 40 percent of survivors fear reprisal by their attacker; eight in ten victims actually know their attacker. #ItsOnUs hopes to assist colleges in creating a safe
environment where the community is constantly on the lookout to prevent sexual assault. #ItsOnUs is about creating a culture where sexual assault isn’t acceptable, and where victims know they are not to blame. The campaign also aims to shift the way society thinks about sexual assault: it doesn’t just involve the victim and the perpetrator, but everyone else who could have prevented it, as well. “We are reframing sexual assault in a way that inspires everyone to see it as their responsibility to do something, big or small, to prevent it,” their See #ItsOnUs page 3

French Club Says “Bon Jour” to the UNH Campus By ALVARO GRANADOS

You may have heard of the Emergency Medical Services Club, Latin American Student Association or the many other clubs and organizations we have on campus, which number to over one hundred. However, if you are not of American birth, and if you speak more than one language, particularly French, you may be especially interested in joining the new club that celebrates campus diversity. The newly established French Club, the first of its kind, is a brand new recognized student organization that will hold regular meetings and is free to all French students
to join, and very welcoming to all sorts of general members. French history is everywhere around us. In Louisiana, Canada, France, Morocco and all over the world, French influence has dominated since the time of imperialism. Today, going into New Haven, we see French influence in the French restaurants, in festivals, and at the University of New Haven, there are many French speaking students. To be a part of UNH and New Haven County means that you have experience with French culture. This unique French culture is what the French club aims to bring to you, the UNH students. The French club will work not only at UNH,
but also raise awareness in West Haven for the innumerable French festivals that happen all over the city. It is organized by a French teacher, and has lots of opportunities for its members, including French food, French music, French cinema and lots of things to get involved with. “Many people don’t realize that French is a global language,” Jessica DeVos, the French Club’s advisor, said. “It is the only language, besides English, that is spoken on five continents and is the official language of twenty-nine countries! In addition, there are many other countries and regions where French is an administrative language or where there are large Francophone popula-
tions.” “I’m excited to be teaching French here at the University of New Haven and look forward to helping the program grow,” DeVos added. “French language study naturally complements many of the popular majors offered here at UNH – such as Hospitality and Tourism Management, Criminal Justice, or National Security Studies, just to name a few! In addition to the pleasure of learning a new language, mastering French can increase your employment opportunities.” The French Club will be hosting a free “speak in French” table in Bartels every Friday, so come speak with us.

Miller’s act combines magic, comedy and mind reading, among other things, and took place in Bucknall Theater. “I’m really happy UNH does this,” Marino said about Family Day. “There’s tons of activities and they all seem interesting.” At 1 p.m., families could attend the UNH vs. Assumption football game at North Campus, which a lot of father’s, including Rourke, said they were looking forward to most. Other activities included a trip to the Flight
Trampoline Park, a fire show performed by Antonalia the Fire Goddess, and hypnotist Jim Spinnato. “For the most part, everyone enjoyed the day,” said Newball. “The hard part is figuring out how many people are going to show up. For next year, I’d like to offer more activities and spread them out more throughout the day.” Undergraduate Student Government Association President Richard Rotella said the day was a blast. “It was a lot of fun seeing the families celebrate all that UNH has to offer,” said Rotella. One of the many scholarships that have come to use are the DeNardis Endowed Scholarship and the Emergency Scholarship Fund. Guest speaker, Jenny Tanski ’14, praised how her peers and UNH have helped her graduate on time and pay off loans
with these scholarships at a time of need. In 2013, Tanski lost her parents in an accident after a blizzard and had little income to follow. “I was so scared,” said Tanski. “This couldn’t happen to my family. Not us. Not now. Not ever.” After being stuck inside for three days following a historic blizzard last winter, Tanski was getting cabin fever. So, Tanski and her sister decided they would make a short
walk from their Milford home to find something to eat, and they invited their parents. Since the sidewalks weren’t clear, the four walked in a single file line along Route 1 as close as possible to the snow banks, but the trip turned tragic when a Black SUV came barreling at the group. Thankfully, Tanski’s younger sister was not hit, and Tanski avoided serious injury, but her

There are many resources on campus where victims will be given a safe space. The Violence Prevention and Intervention Center is a place where all members of the UNH community can find information and resources about sexual assault, relationship abuse, and stalking. Trained Peer Educators are on staff in the center and are available

he Cyber Forensics Research and Education Laboratory at the University of New Haven is now up and running. The Grand Opening ceremony and ribbon cutting was held Friday, Sept 19 in Buckman Hall, followed by a reception in Gehring Hall. Ronald S. Harichandran, Dean of the Tagliatela College of Engineering, welcomed everyone to the event. Remarks were given by Henry C. Lee, Dora B. Schriro, the Commissioner of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Ali Golbazi, the Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science, and Ibrahim Baggili, Assistant Professor and Director of CFREL. Although the laboratory has just opened, the Cyber Forensics and Research team has been making a name for themselves. The team has gained recognition beginning fall of 2013, and some of their accomplishments include being the first in Connecticut to establish an Educational Partnership Agreement with the Defense Cyber Crime Center. They have had 18 peerreviewed publications and investigated the security of Android Apps. They have done exposés of security flaws found in WhatsApp, Viber, Instagram, OKCupid and several other international social apps. There are videos on these apps that can be found

on YouTube and there was a news special done on it that was featured on WTNH. Some of the students developed MINT or Malware Investigation Toolkit. They were invited to join the Academic Alliance for the Department of Homeland Security’s Stop. Think. Connect campaign and they are hosting the International Conference on Digital Forensics and Cyber Crime and the Systematic Approaches to Digital Forensics Engineering conference. They also received a grant of $140,000 from the Department of Homeland Security to build the Artifact Genome Project. This only touches on the list of accomplishments they have made just within the past year. Jason Moore, a student of the Cyber Forensics
program, gave a quick info session on some of the lab’s amenities. The state of the art new lab features 18 brand new iMac workstations, a portable clean room for hard drive discs, .XRY Mobile Forensic units, military grade forensic duplicators and wipers, hardware write-blockers, and a 75” flat screen television that can stream information from any computer in the room. The most important part of all the recognition and accomplishments are the students, according to Baggili. He ended his speech by asking, “Who are the real heroes?” He then answered with “the students” and then asked everyone for a round of applause for them and their hard work. “Without my students, nothing would be possible.”

Create a flexible plan that doesn’t rely on dates and times. Decide on a number of jobs to apply to during the week and weekend. Continuously apply until you’re sure you’ve found the right one. Even if you’ve landed your first job, continue to apply to jobs that will advance your career in the direction you want it to go. These are all the tips I learned from reading D2S.
I found my favorite aspect of his book is that he provides examples of what to say in an interview, how to write specific parts of your resume, and what a thank-you note might look like. It makes the process of job hunting seem less daunting. Driven to Succeed is worth a read if you’re in your senior year, or even junior year. It’s a short 38 pages of advice that will help you feel more confident as you plan to start a career after college. The take-away: to be driven to succeed you must find, in yourself, the motivation to keep moving toward your goals and career aspirations. All it takes, according to Navallo, is persistence and tenacity.

Driven to Succeed, written by Jason Navallo, is aimed to help postgraduation students start their careers after college by answering five questions: Which field should I choose? How should I write resumes? Where should I look for jobs? How should I prepare for interviews? How should I start a job search? Aside from reviewing the basic steps of applying for jobs that most students, hopefully, already know by the time graduation rolls around, D2S also offers hints and tips to maximize
the use of tools such as LinkedIn and post-interview thank you notes. Which field should you choose? Searching for open positions is possible the hardest task to accomplish in a job search. Navallo gives examples of effective search engine queries such as inputting the current year and following with “growing fields” so that you can see which industries may have a large number of opportunities available. He also suggests looking at postings for senior level positions to gain an understanding of what skills you will need to build for the future. It can help to plan which entry-level position is best suited for you. How should I write
resumes? Use resources available at the campus career center; they can provide format and editing services. Make sure that you are selling yourself and creating a brand and not just stating what you have accomplished. Fill your resume with effective keywords because recruiters and hiring managers will notice you faster and are more likely to keep your resume in their pile if they are looking for specific skills. Where should I look for jobs? Internships and part-time jobs are great experience building opportunities that shouldn’t be pushed aside after college if you are having trouble landing your dream career. Using job search engines is
a great way to find current openings. Use keywords in your search to find jobs with skills relevant to your experience. Be open to relocating; you may have to move out of your comfort zone but companies are more likely to hire you and there may be opportunities in the future to move to a city you would prefer. Network and connect to people in your industry. Many professionals are willing to offer free career advice, all it takes is a message on LinkedIn. How should I prepare for interviews? Glassdoor is a website that offers the inside scoop on interview processes with large companies. You can get firsthand knowledge for what your interview experience

here are not enough women in late night comedy. This is just a fact. Watch any latenight TV host or comedy special – The Late Show, Conan, Late Night, etc. – and you’ll see that they all have one thing in common: zero women. The exceptions, of course, are the shows’ guests, some of which are female. The other night, I was watching Conan O’Brien as he interviewed various members of the audience on a comical situation. However, rather than the hilarity and awkwardness of the situation, I began to notice that, despite the plethora of female audience members, O’Brien only interviewed male audience members, some of whom weren’t even
funny. Another recent turn of events has even seen Saturday Night Live cast member Cecily Strong being booted from the Weekend Update desk in exchange for newly-cast Daily Show alum Michael Che. While Strong was diplomatic about the upset, fans were shocked at the abrupt replacement, especially since Che, while having proven his comedic chops elsewhere, has thus far had no experience on the SNL stage. With recent loss of late comedienne Joan Rivers and the conclusion to Chelsea Handler’s latenight talk show, Chelsea Lately, the lack of a female presence featured in comedy, whether as principle characters or just as participants, is especially lacking. Sure, there are popular female comedians like Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Kristen Wiig, but for every popular, mainstream, female comedian out there, it seems there are at least four male comedians doing the same job. Furthermore, when looking at examples of late-night and variety shows like SNL, we may see some female comedians, sure, but few are household names, as Fey, Poehler, Wiig, and others became during their time on SNL. While there will
never be another Tina Fey, just as there will never be another Carol Burnett or Gilda Radner, this does not mean that there will not be a new female comedian—one who is held in the same regard as Adam Sandler, Bill Hader or Dan Ackroyd. The argument that women aren’t funny is nothing more than a cheap put-down by people who find bright women with a sense of humor to be intimidating. But, this excuse is succeeding in deterring potential comedians and young women as a whole. If we don’t start seeing more successful “funny women” soon, the misconception will continue to stand, even if it isn’t true. We need more women in comedy, but, in order to do that, we need it to be less about it being a “man’s job” and more about it being a way to entertain others. There are plenty of girls out there who are funny, brilliant women, but the amount of current female role models to which they can look up are scarce. Everybody likes to laugh, and anybody can be witty and clever. But, at least in the case of women, we need to give then more of an opportunity to live up to their true potential.
You don’t know Weezer?

Over the weekend, the iHeart Radio Music Festival was held in Las Vegas and streamed all over the world. I was so excited as I watched, from the comfort of my couch, artists take the stage, play a set of five songs, plugging iHeart Radio multiple times throughout, then on to the next musician. I loved seeing the upclose and personal shots of some of my favorite artists as they performed, a view I’d never afford to get if I saw them live. Another thing I loved seeing was the audience shots during the performances. The camera
would do a close up of Harry Styles of One Direction singing a solo then quickly cut to the rows of adolescent girls in the audience, clearly going insane over the boy band as they sang and danced and wiped away their fan-girl tears. Weezer took the stage the second night of the festival. I sang along happily as I watched them perform “Back to the Shack” and then go into “Beverly Hills.” Then I started to notice the audience shots were a lot different from when One Direction and Taylor Swift were on stage. Men who looked to be around 25 to 30 years old were the ones going crazy while Rivers Cuomo crooned “Say It Ain’t So.” The rows upon rows of teenage girls were staring blankly at the stage. It dawned on me; they have little to no clue who Weezer even is. If you said “Rivers Cuomo” to them, it would register nothing in their adolescent minds. Granted, Weezer re-
leased their first album in 1993, years before someone who is 18 years old now was born, and they haven’t released an album since 2010. However, people should still know who Weezer is. They made such an impact on the emo, alternative rock and indie music world and inspired countless other bands and listeners alike. Case studies have been done about how Weezer has impacted the music industry! It is hard to fathom that people don’t know such an influential band, even if they don’t like the genre. It’s like someone not knowing Queen or Aerosmith…it’s just not right. If you’re reading this and don’t know Weezer, go type them into Spotify or Pandora or plug their name into Google and learn. Look up other influential artists of the 1990s while you’re at it—educate your musical mind; you won’t regret it, I promise!

_____________________ While walking to class, I don’t appreciate getting wet from the sprinklers. I also dislike having to dodge the giant puddles in the walkways that the sprinklers make. Sprinklers should be used to water grass, not the concrete and especially not me. The placement of the sprinklers boggles my mind. It’s as if the University of New Haven is trying to water both sides of the grass with one sprinkler; however this isn’t the case, because there are sprinklers on each side of the sidewalk. So why are they placed so close to the edge of the grass? Something else that annoys me about this situation are the sprinklers on the grass behind Bixler. They are right in front of the windows on the first floor. What if residents have their windows open—wouldn’t the water get in through the windows? The sprinklers by Bixler and Soundview aren’t the only annoying

The sprinklers by the library also water the walkway too, as if they are trying to reach the grass on the other side of the walkway—but again, they aren’t because there is already a sprinkler on that side, also watering the walkway. If the sprinklers are on when leaving the library, you are trapped. No matter which way you go, there is a sprinkler that is watering the concrete all the way down the walkways until you reach Buckman, down the stairs, or Gerhing Hall. Lastly, UNH, it is not necessary to water the grass when it’s sup-
posed to rain—or when it actually is raining. I know you want the grass to look good but the sky will take care of it for you for that one day. I’m not huge on the whole water conservation thing, but I’m pretty sure that watering your grass when it is raining is frowned upon. There’s also such a thing as overwatering grass; because of the constant watering, the grass gets muddy and swampy. On that note, my advice to you, UNH, is to not water your grass in the rain. Most importantly, when you “water the grass,” actually water the grass.

This past Friday, President Obama and Vice President Biden announced the launch of the It’s On Us Campaign against sexual assault. Many organizations, celebrities, colleges and universities across the country partnered with this campaign. The University of New Haven is one of those schools! I would like to challenge you all to take the pledge and make a stance against sexual assault. You can take the pledge at ItsOnUs.org. Also make sure to check out the complete story on page one.
This past week RSO accounts were frozen due to lack of attendance at the mandatory USGA Treasurer Trainings. Per the USGA Constitution consequences of being frozen include inability to access USGA funding as well as collecting points for any event that occurs during the period for which your organization is frozen. In order to become unfrozen the members who did not attend Treasurer Training that were required to go (President, Treasurer, and an additional member), must watch the Treasurer Training Tegrity that will be posted on the Student Activities page on newhaven.edu. Upon completion of watching the tegrity session, these members must also come see me during my office hours to take a quiz, which you must recieve a 80 percent or higher.
I hope you all enjoyed the Family Day festivities this weekend and spent quality time with your friends and family! Remember to start getting ready for Homecoming weekend—it is only 27 days away! The Train is Not Stopping

We all know Train. “Drops of Jupiter:” a classic. “Hey, Soul Sister:” either made or ruined your summer in 2010. Many other songs have reached our hearts and ruined our voices. One can’t help but wonder what we could have had those years that Train took their hiatus. But obviously they took that time to regroup, and because of that, they came out stronger. Train released their seventh studio album this week titled Bulletproof Picasso.. It’s their third album release since their return to the stage in 2010. I have to say, I was so excited for this release when the first single, “Angel in Blue Jeans,” was released. It seems like every modern soft rock artist is trying a western track (or in John Mayer’s case, an album or two). This may seem like a stretch for Train, especially for a voice like Pat Monahan’s, but they absolutely killed it. The rest of the album is also incredible. Song after song, you just want to jam out. off of the album was “Angel in Blue Jeans.” This western influenced song also features Danny Trejo in the epic music video that makes you want the song to go on even longer. “Cadillac, Cadillac” was the second single released and slightly resembles the old rhyme “Patty-cake” if you really listen to it. But it is definitely different in the sense that it has a grunge rock feel to it; a different sound for Train, but definitely fitting. The title track, “Bulletproof Picasso,” is a very typical Train sound, but nonetheless awesome. It has an uplifting nature and inspiring message behind
it. The ballad “Don’t Grow Up Too Fast” shows off Pat Monahan’s soft side and vocal control. It has the potential to reach the heart of anyone, but more especially to the parents out there (also it would be a good song for a father-daughter dance at a wedding or Sweet 16). “The Bridge” is a song you just want to dance to. It has a fast and catchy beat and sing-a-long worthy lyrics. “Wonder What Your Doing for the Rest of Your Life” is another definitely danceable song that features vocals by Marsha Ambrosius. “Give it All” is an uplifting power ballad that is about wanting just one more
night with a special someone, but knowing that they have to go. Pat really puts his soul and emotion behind that song to make you really feel it too. Basically, what I’m saying is Train really knocked it out of the park with this album. I just downloaded it and I already can’t wait for the next one. I would definitely recommend this album to current Train fans, previous Train fans or people who only know the two songs I previously mentioned. I can’t wait to see what Train releases next. Bulletproof Picasso definitely shows that Train is definitely not stopping.

_____________________ Being a member of the University of New Haven community has led me to meet so many talented people in so many different fields. Catalina Gonzalez has been no exception. Hailing from Santiago, Chile, the senior here at UNH has made a name for herself in the local music community and is looking to expand out with new music opportunities. Over the past few years she’s put out two EPs, Old Soul, New Voice and Game Of Words, with plenty of fun covers along the way including her “Song Sunday” installments you can check out on YouTube. She released her newest EP last semester, Roadrunner, and I think it truly shows her versatility as a songstress and her power as a vocalist! The EP opens with the title track “Roadrunner” that is reminiscent of an old bluesy rock track. The chugging guitar line evokes a ZZ Top vibe while Gon-

zalez croons about chasing after a “roadrunner” love. The next track, “To Forget You,” goes in a completely new direction, taking me to a distant island with the reggae harmonies and again that very distinctive guitar setting the tone for the song. For me, the best was certainly saved for last with the very slinky and sultry “My Man.” The mysterious verses opened up to a powerful wailing chorus that absolutely blew me away with an organ part that felt like I was being taken to church.
There is no low point to this EP, no filler track to take up space and nothing missing from my musical palate. I can really appreciate artists who put out short EPs like Roadrunner because it’s a sampling of short songs that all show such strength. I would much rather a short brilliantly crafted EP over a full length that has sub-par filler tracks. All in all, Catalina Gonzalez hit this one out of the park. It’s been awesome for me personally to watch Gonzalez go from performing at the freshman talent show singing Adele to now putting out great original music. Hopefully it won’t be long before I can say that the girl on TV winning a Grammy went to my alma mater!

Jill Jensen is a guitarist, pianist, saxophonist, violinist and bassist. She also plays the ukulele and drums. Jensen is a 22-year-old singer-songwriter from Massachusetts. She has been singing since the age of two and writing and composing her own music since the age of eight. Since then, she released two albums, including her original songs. She has written and composed well over 100 different songs, which is incredible. She appeared on the X-Factor Season two in 2012, as well as American Idol XIII in 2014. On July 8, she released her first single “In Your Arms,” and it’s a bonus track off her album Stages, which was released on September 15. This is what I thought of her heart-felt songs. “I’m Movin’ On”: As I listened to this song, I enjoyed her vocals as she sang her heart out and you could feel her passion and intensity. “Breakin’ You”: In this song having backup vocals for the harmonies was a great jester to the song. As well as the little giggle in between her lyrics, I thought it was a nice touch. “I Deserve Better”: Jill’s voice in this song is steady throughout the whole song and she can hit those notes perfectly. I can feel her pain as she sings this song and she knows how to really connect with her fans through her songs. It’s very touching to hear. “Who I Wanna Be”: To me this might be my favorite off her album, because it’s different

from the other songs on the album. When I listened to it something about her lyrics hooked me and I couldn’t help but put the song on repeat. “Lullaby”: Her lyrics for the song accompanied by the rhythm and melody, which flows together perfectly and gives the song that extra push. “He’s No You”: Listening to this song, made me think how many people can relate to her message as saying that the person you look at is nothing compared to your significant other. “Morning Thoughts”: I believe when you listen to this song it gives you a different perspective on the way others may think. It makes you wonder if you do the same as you wake up in the morning. “Let Love Start”: This song took my mind deep into the song listening to the lyrics of what she was singing, and the message was remembering. “Sit Back, Watch & Criticize”: In this song, you can really hear her raspy voice which made the song stand out with her unique style. Having that tone as she sings makes her different because not everyone sounds like that when they sing. “The Plan”: I think ending the album with this song was genius because it leaves the listeners with her passionate vocals. She also adds her own twist to the song and really holds out some of those notes. Jill Jensen knows how to get the crowd ready for a show; don’t miss out on a chance to see her live.

When he first started his musical career, Witty went through the dictionary and found a word that described his humor, his—for lack of a better word—wittiness. With his progressive change in his music and the meaning behind it, Witty found it would only make sense to mature his artist alias as well. From Witty to Witt Lowry. Dropping the “y,” and creating a “last name” by using a variation of his middle name Lawerance, after his grandfather who is a strong inspiration in his life. The name change also makes his music more easily searchable. I was fortunate enough to speak with Witt Lowry about his career and recent developments. This is an artist who is taking music back to basics. The type of artist who speaks the truth regardless of what the outcome may be. “I decided to pursue music as a career after I graduated from college,” Lowry explained. “I spent some time after graduation doing freelance graphic design for the WWE. It was everything I had wanted from the time I first went to school, but once I was in the nine to five grind, I
realized it was far from my dream. Photoshopping John Cena and The Rock became monotonous, and I realized I wanted to be the guy people were photoshopping, not the one sitting behind the desk.” “I was just really unhappy, and I started working on Kindest Regards [his first mixtape] before I graduated, but hadn’t had much time to dedicate to it because of ‘real life.’ I knew it was time to just stop everything and focus on my music. I was passionate about it, and knew if I focused on it I’d be able to make it grow.” You would think that an artist who writes so personally would have trouble performing live, but Lowry actually says the opposite. “I actually choose my most emotional songs when composing a set,” he said. “This past weekend I did my first string of shows, from NYC to Boston to Rhode Island, and I knew to grab people’s attention I had to talk about the stuff that mattered. I didn’t want to be a typical performer who just paces across the stage, where all you hear is clanging glasses and various conversations, I wanted to be the reason people couldn’t look away. I wanted to spill my soul on the stage.” Spilling his soul is
exactly what Lowry does on and off the stage. His music can become the anthem of anyone feeling heartbreak, loss, happiness, or love. It’s not necessarily what he says though, it’s how he says it. “The writing process is pretty simplistic for me,” Lowry described. “The notes on my phone are filled with one-liners, and the hardest part is not being able to fit a certain line in where I want it to go. There’s an element of having to let go that is really hard when you envision something else, but you have to just realize that nothing is set in stone and the creative process is kind of never-ending.” Lowry is so inspiring to his listeners, and he says he realized this when Kindest Regards first came out. “People said that mixtape changed their lives and it was humbling,” he said. “Opening up is so easy for me to do because I’m the type of person who is always truthful and honest, not to mention it helps me vent everything… like a coping mechanism,” he explained. “The toughest part of it all is wondering if the people I write about will hear it and get mad or upset, but then I have to remind myself that people always know where

they stand with me. I wouldn’t put anything in a song that I wouldn’t say to them in person. I just highlight the truth of what they did, and let the listeners take what they feel from it.” While Lowry so easily inspires everyone else, his strongest inspirations in his life make his career worthwhile. “Anytime I feel like I’ve had enough or I’m too tired I just think of my Mom. My mom has sacrificed a lot for me in her life, and I feel like
it’s the least I can do to give back to her. I want us to be at a point where she doesn’t have to work thanks to me. She just really helps me push through. My grandfather is the wisest man I’ve ever met, and is so important to me as well.” As for his musical influences, they are a bit harder to predict by his sound than other artists of his caliber. “Musically Eminem, Macklemore, and Hopsin are inspiring to me with the way they go about
making music. It’s not necessarily their sound that I model my music after, but the way that they convey their messages.” Lowry’s latest track, Lay Here, is a true example of his poetic abilities, passionate truths, and relatable words. Produced by Tido Vegas, the sample on this track was taken from James Bay’s “Let It Go” and is cohesive to the story that Lowry tells as each verse unfolds.

––––––––––––––––––––– Around Comic Con time this year, a two minute clip of “test footage” of a new film was leaked onto the internet. This footage was of the much anticipated Deadpool movie. Deadpool, for all those who do not know, is one of the many X-Men. He has never been given a cinematic rendering, unless one counts the 2009 X Men Origins: Wolverine scene. Yet even a casual Marvel fan can recognize that film as a mess, and completely missing the tone of Deadpool is perhaps that film’s nail in the coffin. In the comics, Deadpool, or Wade Wilson, his alter ego, is a super human with remarkable healing abilities, similar to Wolverine. Yet Deadpool is not the brutish tough thug Wolverine is. He is referred to by many as the “merc with the mouth,” for Wade Wilson has a habit of running his mouth off, even breaking the fourth wall by making puns to the comic book reader. The test footage captured this perfectly. The two minute footage, now available online, involves Deadpool thwarting some villains in a car chase. After he has defeated them, he jokingly holds up the decapitated head of one of the villains and uses it as a puppet. Obviously, Wade Wilson is not the conventional superhero seen in Captain America or Superman. While this test footage was
very exciting, it was thought just to be a shelved project by Fox, not intended for anything. However, on Sept 18, Fox announced on Twitter that a Deadpool film has been greenlit with a planned release on Feb 12, 2014. The internet blew up with fan boys going crazy, after having felt betrayed by the butchering of Wade Wilson’s character in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Yet the positive reaction to the test footage has been so strong that now fans are eagerly anticipating a new take on the character. The only other confirmed detail about the film besides the date is that Tim Miller is the director. If you have not heard of him, that’s because no one else has. He has only directed two other short films Rockfish and Aunt Luisa. This calls into question whether a young up and coming director should make his feature film directorial debut with a major comic book property. Also, February is considered the dumping ground for movies, not being in the major summer blockbuster season or November-December Oscar season. This indicates two things: Deadpool might have an R-rating. To this day, there has not been an R rated superhero film as that cuts out a large demographic of the ticket buying audience who is under 17. This could be a good thing, as Deadpool is very inappropriate in his comedic elements, as well as very gruesome in the way he takes down his adversaries. This would make
sense, as the studio does not expect to take in as much in this time of year and February will have less competition than May or December would. Also, the film might have a much lower budget than the standard $170 million for superhero blockbusters. That might be okay though, for in the comics, Deadpool does not save the planet or take on large alien spaceships. Rather, he stops drug busts or robberies in very comedic ways. These grounded conflicts have more potential for comedy as they are more relatable, so perhaps a $30 million dollar budget will be okay for a Deadpool film. The big question is how this new movie will affect the XMen cinematic universe. Ryan Reynolds, who played him in the 2009 film, is rumored to be returning but nothing is confirmed. If he did not return, that would not really be a continuity error given the ending of Days of Future Past, which we won’t go into for spoilers’ sake. Furthermore, another X-Men film, Age of Apocalypse, will be in theaters just five months later. So, one must wonder what tie-ins might happen. It is likely that a trailer will drop summer 2015, perhaps before Age of Ultron, as it appeals to the same demographic of comic book fans. Regardless, this is major news in the field of film, for one of the most heavily anticipated cinematic comic book adaptations is coming to life. Be sure to check it out Feb 12, 2016!
From the creators of the Halo video game series comes Destiny, Bungie’s latest and biggest project yet. Also taking place in a space-themed, futuristic world where your character is the one person to save us all, Destiny takes leaps forward for what a current day shooter should be. Coming from the recently created genre of MMO-RPG First Person Shooters, Destiny is essentially a combination of World of Warcraft and Halo, along with a multitude of other games used as inspiration, and that’s a compliment. Bungie took successful elements from some of the best video game franchises, and meshed it into one impressive, symbiotic combination of multiplayer, objectivebased teamwork, and effective single player mechanics. If Destiny had to be described in one word, that word would be “expansive.” Your journey begins on Earth, and slowly expands to our neighboring planets. Your character is a Guardian, and you are charged with defending the Galaxy
from the darkness. For a game that doesn’t extend out of the reach of our solar system, Destiny covers a lot of ground (or rather, space) by condensing a lot of the game’s information, but leaving room for expansion. A common issue many players are having is that there is not as much of a story in Destiny as was promised, but the story is simply in areas the players are not looking. Bungie decided to put most of the game’s lore online and in the accompanying Destiny Companion App. In the app, users can see their created characters, customizable gear, and everything Destiny-related. The companion app is the hidden gem of not just the game itself, but of the universe Destiny is trying to create. The Destiny Companion app has an aspect called grimoire points. You receive grimoire points by completing objectives in-game (i.e. completing missions, killing a certain number of enemies, etc.) Many players have an issue with having to use external resources outside of the game in order to get a better understanding of the story, but it’s actually a very creative plan. When other players look at your profile, they see how
many grimoire points you’ve obtained. The more points you have, the more impressive you look in your friend group of Guardians. In order to get more grimoire points, you need to play more of the game. The more grimoire points you unlock, the more information you receive about the lore of the Destiny universe. Although Destiny has many positives, it is not a completely perfect game. Many elements of Online Player vs. Player matchmaking in the first-person genre are missing from the game. There are no lobbies for friends to convene before choosing a match, and players also cannot communicate via voice chat, unless they are partied up with their teammates. The release of Destiny will ultimately be a defining moment in the online-based video game industry. Bungie states that this is not the end product for the game, but only the beginning. So far only three planets are included in the game (plus the moon), and there’s room for our Guardians to explore the rest of the Galaxy. Bungie believes they have ten years’ worth of content planned for Destiny, and let’s hope they’re right.

New York Giants @ Washington Redskins The Giants finally got their first win of the season over the Texans on Sunday in what was probably a mustwin game. The Giants will need a strong showing on defense since Washington has put up a combined 75 Points in the last two games. Kirk Cousins has proven that he should be the starter for the Redskins. Expect a good game on Thursday Night Football between the NFC East rivals. Philadelphia Eagles @ San Francisco 49ers The Eagles’ defense has been very shaky in the early part of the season, but the offense has been able to overcome the poor defense. Meanwhile, San Francisco has lost two straight games and hasn’t looked like the same team that has been to three consecutive NFC Championship games. Expect the 49ers to look improved, but the Eagles highpowered offense should be too much to handle. Expect the Eagles to improve to 4-0. Green Bay Packers @ Chicago Bears Both teams haven’t looked very impressive in the early going, especially the Packers. An Aaron Rodgers led team hasn’t looked this bad in a few years. Expect them to battle to stay afloat in the division. Chicago
has been inconsistent in the early going but look to beat their division rival. Expect a good, competitive game in Chicago. Buffalo Bills @ Houston Texans Both these teams are 2-1 to start the season, however neither team has played a tough opponent. Houston lost a game they should have won against the Giants. Both teams surprisingly sit atop their divisions and one of these teams will stay on top with a win. Expect the Titans defense to be too much for the Bills. Tennessee Titans @ Indianapolis Colts The Colts finally found the win column after their blowout win over the Jaguars. Andrew Luck has found his form and looks to use the momentum to take down the Titans. Tennessee hasn’t looked good since their upset win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Look for the Colts to down the Titans at home. Carolina Panthers @ Baltimore Ravens The Ravens are 2-1 to start the season, but it hasn’t been entirely easy. They needed a last second field goal to down the feisty Browns. Baltimore’s offense hasn’t been up to par and will need to turn that around to compete in the tough AFC North. Carolina joins a long list of inconsistent teams despite their 2-1 record. Look for the Panthers to get better and compete for the division crown. This game should be close with the Ravens com-
ing out on top. Detroit Lions @ New York Jets The Lions have been up and down to start the season. They played extremely well in their two wins and will look to put together a win streak against the Jets. The Jets are not a bad team this year and have had bad breaks. Expect the Lions to improve to 3-1 with a win. Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Pittsburgh Steelers The Steelers made a statement on Sunday Night Football that they are a true contender in the NFL. Roethlisberger didn’t throw for many yards but he was effective. If the Steelers continue to have a good running game, they will be tough to stop. The Bucs are 0-3 and looked bad against the Falcons. Expect the Bucs to change their game plan to compete, but the Steelers should win easily. Miami Dolphins @ Oakland Raiders Neither of these teams have started the season well, but one team has a chance to turn things around. The Raiders continue to struggle early in the season and need a big change if they want to compete in their division. The Dolphins haven’t impressed since coming from behind against the Patriots in Week One. They are ranked twenty-ninth in passing yards and need to better that to have a balanced attack against opponents. Expect the Dolphins to rebound and beat the Raiders.
Jacksonville Jaguars @ San Diego Chargers San Diego has looked extremely well in the first three games and was only a two points away from a 3-0 start. Instead they are 2-1 and look to continue their hot start against a Jaguars team that hasn’t played well since the first half of their season. Expect the Chargers to blow out the Jaguars. Atlanta Falcons @ Minnesota Vikings The Falcons are looking strong this year, despite their one lopsided loss. They have scored a lot of points in their two wins behind quarterback Matt Ryan’s stellar play. Minnesota has to turn to backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, after starter Matt Cassel went down with a broken foot. The rest of the season will be a glimpse into the future of the Minnesota Vikings. Expect the Falcons to win on the road. New Orleans Saints @ Dallas Cowboys The Dallas Cowboys made history Sunday by having the biggest regular season comeback in team history. They were down 21 points to start the game against the Rams. Expect the Cowboys to have a much better start on Monday Night Football. The Saints got their first win of the season after having tough luck in their opening two games. Expect the Saints to put together a streak and climb back to .500. This game should be a good game on Monday Night Football.

Postcards from Prato On Sat, Sept. 13, I went to my first ever Palla Grossa game in Prato and it happened to be the best one, because it was the finale! Palla Grossa is a sport that, in my eyes, is a mix of soccer, wrestling and football. Prato is divided into four teams representing the oldest neighborhoods of the city, the four corners: Santo Stefano (yellow), Santa Trinita (red), San Marco (green), and Santa Maria (blue). The finale I attended was yellow vs. blue and my friends and I sat and cheered for the yellow team. I’ve never been very into sports, but the energy of this game and the fans gave me a night to remember. The game started with the team walking around the field and as they passed by their side of the bleachers, the fans threw fireworks, held up flags, chanted and showed their pride. My friends and I sat next to a couple of friendly Italians who told us some of their chants and about the history of the game and I immediately felt welcomed. I started to understand the game and rules about ten minutes in. There was always so much going on, but it was amusing to watch your team of shirtless men pin down and fight players

from the other team and dominate the scoreboard. It’s an even better feeling to watch your team win and jump into the stands of their fans. Palla Grossa is a night to remember, and I highly recommend watching videos and attending a game if you get the chance to. What I love about Prato, Italy, is that fall is the season of festivals and when one comes to an end, another is coming into town. This week in Prato is the European market in Piazza Duomo, which consists of about 60 stands with a variety of food and sweets, wine and beer, clothing and more from a variety of countries such as Finland, Germany, Amster-
dam, and Austria. I’ve had pork, chocolate covered pretzels, sangria, bought a winter hat from Finland and learned that moi means hello in Finnish! The Finnish language is very interesting and I think that once I master the Italian language I’ll try to learn more of Finnish. Most of the workers speak English and that is nice because it’s easier to ask questions about their country and learn more about them. One of the ladies from the Finland tent asked me about my studies and the U.S. and it’s nice to converse with people and see them again and have them remember your name and want to talk more with you.

Classes are going well and are very intriguing; Italian is making more sense and I think I’m catching on quicker. It’s so much easier to learn about a culture when you’re living in it. Every day, I’m using Italian and noticing things from the culture that I have the ability to bring back to class and talk about. I had this moment of realization of how lucky I am to have this opportunity to not only study abroad, but meet people from around the world and learn about so many different cultures. I no longer feel like a tourist but more of a guest. Observations this week: 1. Restaurants and shops play American/ English music. Most times, if an American walks into a shop, they will change the music to make you feel more comfortable. 2. Stores close for a couple hours in the afternoon so that people can run errands. 3. Pizza doesn’t come sliced, and is eaten with a fork and knife. 4. In public, busy places, such as train stations and bus stops, depending on the place, you might have to pay to use the restroom. It’s usually one euro.

__________________________________ This is the time of year where I get exceptionally frustrated with New England weather—the transition from summer into fall. Wear something a little warmer out and by the time you get to campus, you’re sweating rain drops; wear something more geared towards your summer outfits and it feels like the Arctic. My qualms about the extreme bipolar nature of the weather in this region of the U.S. is the inspiration for this week’s outfits. Whether you are a true East Coaster, born and raised, who won’t wear Uggs boots until at least December like my roommate, or like my fellow Californians from the West coast, here are some summer-fall transition
Summer dress made Fall (Photo obtained via Pinterest) outfits that will cover all of Mother Nature’s bases. 1.Dresses—Take any one of your summer dresses, whether it be floral or just a single monochrome and make
it appropriate for fall easily. For your floral dresses, add some light layers that can easily be taken off if the temperature rises a little more as the day goes on. My absolute favorite accessory for this outfit would be an oversized, loose cardigan in a neutral color that doesn’t take away from the pattern of the dress but highlights it even more. Pair these with a skinny belt so your body shape doesn’t get lost in the cardigan, some tights for the 8am-class-goers and some cute booties. 2.Shorts—Take these denim classics and add a little grunge edge to them. Wear some black tights under your shorts to get some warmth but allow your skin to breath

over-shirt left unbuttoned and some combat boots. If you’re in for a long day and want some outerwear for the chilly nights, grab an army green utility or military-style jacket. 3.Jeggings—American Eagle has the best jeggings in my opinion; they look great and are the most comfortable pieces of clothing to wear. Jeggings are the perfect in-between for regular leggings and jeans; they provide more body heat than leggings, but are more mobile than jeans. On top, wear those flowy summer tops for the last few times, a patternedcloth infinity scarf, an open-knitted cardigan that isn’t too warm and a pair of ballet flats or sandals.
