The glass atrium, which will likely be three stories high and the length of the new building, will serve as a student socializing space, which Kaplan hopes will ideally be used by students for coffee breaks, study groups, club meetings, and concerts. At the moment, he said, this is all conceptual. Kaplan addressed student concerns during the meeting, most of which revolved around parking, possible uses of the new building, and on-campus housing. USGA Senator Rachael Spotts felt that new dormitories on campus
should be held as a higher priority than a new academic building. Kaplan explained that while the university is in need for more housing, it is difficult for the university to find donors for new residence hall. Instead, Kaplan would like to build off-campus apartments in the area that are competitively priced but separately contracted from the university in order to get more housing closer to campus. USGA Senator Mark Sylvester suggested that because of safety concerns, the university should help students look for off-campus housing in safe, affordable areas. “If you’re not going to make
a new building, then you need to get a group of people who can help students find safe place to live off campus,” he said. “Help us find safe and affordable housing.” Kaplan said he appreciated the discussion and that he was happy to see so many students involved and invested in the campus. “We’re here for one reason and one reason only: to educate young people,” Kaplan said. “We’re here for you. I don’t take what you’re asking as complaints, but as valid concerns.”

veryone remembers the best birthday they’ve ever had and the present that seemed too good to be true. On Oct.17, the University of New Haven marching band helped make a local boy’s birthday wish a reality. For his fourth birthday, Owen Messing, wanted to visit and conduct a marching band. When his parent’s, Noah and Lori Messing, began to search for the perfect present
they began looking at different local marching bands but finally decided on UNH saying, “We looked at a few different bands and were impressed by the UNH band’s website and the size of the band.” When Jason DeGroff, the band director here at UNH, received the email he was “surprised but also thrilled.” When Owen and his mom walked onto the football field during the band’s Saturday morning practice Owen’s eyes lit up with delight and an ear-to-ear smile formed on his face. He watched the band finish practice on the side lines with his mom
and shortly became the center of attention once practice ended. He took pictures with the Trumpet Section, led a portion of the band around the field, and played one of the marching band snare drums! He was an honorary member of the marching band for the time he spent with them on the field. Owen’s love for marching bands has been a persistent theme throughout his early childhood; according to his parents, “Owen has loved music since he was born.” He even used to ask his parents to sing marching See MARCHING BAND page 3

On Oct. 14, Jacqueline Hinrichs, who is St. Jude’s fundraising president, put on an ABC (Anything But Clothes) fashion show. This is the first time the St. Jude Up ‘Til Dawn committee has put on a fashion show to help fundraise for the finale of Up ‘Til Dawn in February.
The committee has set a goal of $100,000, hoping to beat last year’s $87,130. So far, they have raised $12,000, and the fashion show brought in an additional $356 with the generous donations from the audience. The University of New Haven is the third top fundraising school for St. Jude’s in the United States. St. Jude is a non-profit
organization that was founded in 1962. Its motto being “No child should die in the dawn of life,” St. Jude provides patient care and treatment at no cost; no family ever pays for anything through St. Jude. Here at UNH, students can join the UTD committee and help organize St. Jude fundraisers and raise money for the grand total. There will be tables in November to
help donate, but if you don’t just want to donate there, you can always join a team. The show, which was held in Bucknall Theater at 8 p.m., featured contestants who were both female and male and had to compete with each other in three categories. Hinrichs discussed the point of an ABC fashion show, and how she wanted it to relate to the kids at St. Jude’s. She
explained that, although obviously not as difficult as going through chemo, trying to find and create an outfit using no clothes was a difficult challenge, like fighting cancer. tioned why he dressed up as a present, Lindley stated, “St. Jude gives more birthdays for kids.” The next category involved each contestant being asked two questions or facts about St. Jude, which everyone succeeded in answering correctly. fact, several chariots fell apart during the racing process. With no serious injuries, the races attracted a crowd and added to the excitement of the homecoming weekend. Another attraction before the football game was the car smashing fundraiser. Participants paid a dollar to use a sledgehammer to destroy a car. All proceeds went toward the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which uses the money to grant wishes to children diagnosed with life threatening illnesses. Fans gathered in the stadium to support the UNH football team dur-
ing their game against LIU Post. Noise makers and shouts erupted from the stands as proud alumni and students united to cheer the Chargers on to victory. The UNH cheerleaders, dance team, and marching band led the crowd in school spirit. Football wasn’t the only sports team to play during the homecoming celebration on Saturday. Men’s and women’s soccer, and also women’s volleyball competed as well. George Melanson, UNH graduate of 1983, said he comes to homecoming for both the tailgating and the game,
as well as “to be with old friends.” Melanson was a hockey player during his years at the University and has a daughter that recently graduated from UNH in 2013. Director of Athletics Debbie Chin said “I think it’s just absolutely terrific,” about the homecoming celebration. “Working with USGA, clubs and organizations, the chariot races, all of these combining with the marching band… it’s just terrific, I think it’s what college should be,” Chin said “We’re happy that athletics could play a part of it. We are one big family.”

It was clearly the best birthday present, leaving his parents’ only concern being topping it in the future, as they said “I don’t know how we’re going to beat this.” Having Owen come to practice was not only rewarding and special to him; it was also an outstanding experience for the band. our fourth year of doing it.” According to Gillette, the main goal of the event is to donate as many clothes as possible to the Salvation Army. The event has gotten bigger every year and is now a common name around campus. When asked about SAE’s plans for expansion, Gillette responded, “The run is longer this year, we have a bigger band and basically everything is getting bigger.” As barely clothed run-
ners swarmed into the Beckerman Recreation Center, the opening band, The Funk Dawgz Brass Band, greeted them. The band then took the stage to open the concert. Their loud and in-your-face New Orleans style jazz had the whole crowd dancing. Their music is a combination of jazz, big band, funk and hip hop, all coming together to make an awesome original sound. They played popular covers of Michael Jackson’s “Wanna Be Starting Something”
and the most recent funk-smash hit “Uptown Funk.” The headliner for the show was pop-punk band We the Kings. They came out and immediately shook the floor with their huge sound. Having been around for a while, the band has gained quite a following, which was apparent with students at UNH. The crowd was really into their set, with many people singing most of the songs. The band was extremely interactive with the crowd, showing their appreciation and funny stage banter. They sang several old songs and ended with their two most popular. Their second to last song was an extended version of “Say You Like Me” and finally finished with their biggest hit, “Check Yes Juliet.” For these two songs, especially the last, the crowd was electric with every person jumping and singing along. “It was great to relive the songs I loved when I was a teenager,” senior Karina Irizarry said. We the Kings rocked Beckerman Recreation Center to finish out an awesome night and a successful fundraising event.

rehearse even better.” Owen’s presence at practice inspired the band to take ownership in their show and gave them the motivation to become even greater. “We are living his dream, and that is all the reason to keep going. That is the reason we do what we do,” Passeri said. Owen may have been given the best birthday present he could ask for, but the marching band was given a reason to keep performing.

Poison Ivy made out of duct tape. Of the four the boys, Lindley won first place and second place was Mroczka. For the girls, DeMarco placed first and coming in second was Skawinski. If you are interested in getting involved with UTD, there are open meetings every other Thursday in the Alumni lounge.

Lamar Kardashian?

I
am sure everyone knows what has been going on the past couple of weeks with Lamar Odom. If you don’t know, you should probably come out from under the rock you’ve been living under (kidding, kind of) and check Twitter or Facebook. Odom has been hospitalized, fighting for his life due to an enormous
intake of cocaine and herbal Viagra used at a brothel in Nevada. Apparently, he has not been doing too well and has not been able to breathe on his own yet. He also has not been able to walk or sit up on his own. Terrible news, right? (Even though he probably shouldn’t have been hanging around a brothel ,using drugs in the first place, but anyway…) Millions of fans, family and friends of Odom have been sending out their prayers in hopes that he gets well soon and makes it through this horrible stage in his life, but apparently – the fact that Kim Kardashian had to postpone her baby shower because of this, has taken the spotlight instead of the fact that Odom may
be on his deathbed. What is it with these Kardashians? Someone tell me how they possibly put the spotlight towards them during someone else’s time of need? Odom has reached his all time low, but that isn’t the real issue to the media. While his former teammates have been putting up Instagram posts praying for someone who is ‘like a brother to them’ and asking for more prayers and support, the Kardashian’s make a statement stating that they apologize for not being able to handle their live stream apps (which are literally just apps where they talk about themselves) at this time since Lamar is in the hospital. Oh my goodness! You poor, poor, poor Kar-
Tease vs. Sleaze: Why Girls Can’t Win

You meet a guy at a party. He’s cute, seems nice, and you’re both looking to have a good time. But then he suggests you take it a little further and go “somewhere more quiet,” to which you politely decline. What comes next in this scenario? Well you get called a tease, of course. But what if you take him up on his offer and find yourself doing the walk of shame the next day? Well then you, my friend, are considered a slut. We live in a society where girls are valued, first and foremost, for their bodies. Women can’t even make their own decisions regarding their own bodies, or walk down a street without being objectified as though they were put on this earth solely for the entertainment of others. Therefore, it shouldn’t
come as a shock that they’re judged based on their sex lives in conjunction with their appearances. Yet, it does; sexuality is a double-edged sword for a woman. If you refuse to hook up or put out, then you’re seen as a conquest in many ways, as a challenge for a man to overcome. However, if the woman is steadfast in her beliefs, then she’s cast off as a prude. If a girl gives a little, but decides she wants to stop, for any reason whatsoever, then she’s a tease. If a girl “goes all the way,” and, God forbid, even enjoys it, then she’s a slut. She’s easy. She’s dirty and damaged goods, and nobody will want her. Other than terms like “man whore” and “f--k boy,” there are no such labels for men, and even these two labels were recently created, and most likely done so by women. The term “man whore” is especially interesting, because it implies that it is simply the male version of a female slut, that’s further insulting him by saying he is no better than a woman condemned by society for having a lot of
sex. But I digress - The point is, there are two labels for men who are promiscuous, both of which have been coined relatively recently. Meanwhile, all it takes is one quick trip to Urban dictionary to define how shameful it is for a woman to want control of her body. Because that’s what it comes down to: control. Women can be as sexually liberated as they like. Some girls like to dress in tube tops and miniskirts, while others prefer oxford shirts and power suits. Some girls make livings as lawyers, while others work as prostitutes, and both can enjoy their jobs. Some women can have a lot of sex, some women can have none at all, some women can decide to go on birth control or get an abortion, some can decide not to, and all can be happy with their decisions. However, no matter what a woman’s decision is about her life, in the end, it doesn’t matter at all. In the end, the sickening fact is that we can never win, because we will only be as valuable as men say we are.

The worst part of all of this is the fact that Odom is not even referred to by his own name or even as a former “basketball star.” He is referred to as “ex-husband of Khloe Kardashian” or “former Keeping Up with the Kardashian’ star.” As if he would have been nothing without marrying into the Kardashian family. As if he did not make his own way to the top. As if he did not make all his own money and have his own life. No, apparently he did nothing but become a Kardashian. His whole hospitalization
has been more about the Kardashians than about him. Every blog and magazine has had headlines such as: “Khloe has not left his side yet!” or “Lamar opened his eyes and said ‘hi’ to Khloe Kardashian” and of course – my personal favorite, “Kim Kardashian cancels baby shower because of Lamar.” Okay, get a grip on yourself, Kim. We’re over you and we know you’re naming your new baby “South.” On a serious note, I do pray that Odom pulls through and gets himself back on track. But even then, I’m sure the headlines will be something along the lines of, “Lamar would not have survived without Kardashians by his side.”
No One Cares About Your Facebook Status By KAITLIN MAHAR

––––––––––––––––––––– Our society is based on updating useless information about our lives, like what we ate for lunch and where we shopped. But, nobody cares about that. It’s all infinitely pointless minutiae. When you go to a concert, how many people do you see taking photos and videos on their iPhones, when they could be experiencing the concert firsthand? How many Facebook statuses have you seen about the movie that just came out, or about someone having “a bad day, but don’t ask me, because I don’t want to talk about it,” prompting about twelve people to comment asking what’s wrong? (Only for the poster to say something along the lines of “Nothing, no one would understand.” Barf.) We are being raised in a culture that has led us to believe that everything we say, tweet, post, and type has value to somebody. Therefore, we overshare. We tell people too much about our lives and our likes and dislikes, yet nothing about ourselves. We live these seeminglyperfect lives behind a computer or smartphone screen, and leave our real selves to be hidden in some far-off corner of reality. It’s a little like the titular character in the Wizard of Oz. “Pay no attention to
the man behind the curtain,” the voice booms, supplemented by fog and pyrotechnics (and, yes, a filter). We have all become our own Wizards of Oz, calculating what about ourselves is important, such as listening to that pop star that you don’t particularly care about, but everyone else does, so you give him a chance (and another, and another, and another...). We don’t show our pale skin, or our zits, or our love of The Golden Compass over Harry Potter. Through social media, we have all become carbon copies of one another, and have forgotten how to truly be social individuals. When we go out to eat, we stand in front of the restaurant, scrolling through Twitter. Then, when our friends show up, we go inside and Instagram our food. When we leave, we go home and post about our “amazing night” on Facebook, and delete said post if nobody likes it. People wonder why our generation has so many social issues, so many worries, so many problems. It’s because we’re living lives behind the safety of touchscreens and keypads. We don’t experience art, music, beauty, or anything in person anymore. We don’t communicate, unless it’s through an app. We’ve forgotten how to live, and we’ve forgotten how to survive without technology and social media.

This is why we stay. We stay for the financial stability. We stay because our abusers have prevented us from getting jobs, and we rely on them financially. We stay because if and when we leave, we lose everything except for the clothes on our backs. We stay because we’re terrified that if we try to leave, then they’ll drain our bank accounts or cancel our credit cards or do something so that without them, we literally have nothing. We stay because anything is better than ending up on the street, even this. We stay for our kids and our siblings and our parents and even our pets because we don’t even want to think about what could happen to them when we leave, if we leave. We stay so they can be safe and so that they will know that somebody loves them, no matter what. We stay so we can try to protect them. We stay because we’re scared. We stay because we worry that maybe they’re right, that we are stupid and lazy and abominable and incapable of being loved by another human being. We stay because all of the yelling, the threats, and even the aggression terrify us, and we can only imagine what would happen if we even tried to leave, much less succeeded. We stay because we love them. We stay because we crave the scraps of love they give us, the brief tastes of normalcy we get sparingly. We stay because we still want to see the good in them we once saw. We stay because we hope they’ll change, even though we know deep down that isn’t a possibility. But instead, maybe we should stop asking why we stay. Instead, maybe we should start asking how it can be okay for these people to hurt others with their actions and words and mind games. We stay because it’s the only way we know how to survive. What’s their excuse?

Last week we were notified of the passing of a beloved UNH professor, Ron Mullen. Prof. Mullen has greatly impacted our campus community and touched many students’ hearts, including my own. Please keep Prof. Mullen and his family in your thoughts and prayers. Recognize the good in your life and be thankful for all that you have. Many have more than we have, but many more have less.

Dear Frustrated Flexer, The most important thing in this situation is how you approach it. Next time you ask her to accompany you and she says no, explain to her that it is something that you love doing and you would enjoy it more if she tagged along. Tell her that you can train her and that she can start off working out for a short period of time before going for an hour or so. Just let her know that health and fitness is important to you and it is something you admire and that you guys should start going together every once in a while! Hopefully when she realizes that its something you admire, she will come through and join you at the gym every now and then! Good luck.
So, I just started dating this girl probably about three weeks ago – if that. We both live on campus and we hang out a lot. She likes to “Netflix and chill” all the time, but I don’t like to sit around all day like she does. I go to the gym at least 4-5 times a week for an hour or so each time and she is as lazy as they come. My girlfriend is not out of shape or anything, but I just wish she would come to the gym with me at least 2 out of the 5 times a week that I go. I don’t think she needs to lose weight or anything; I just want it to be something we do together since it’s something that I love doing. I ask her to come with me almost every time that I go, but she always has an excuse and when I come back XOXO, from the gym she is still sitting there watching Netflix. What do I do? They Tell Of Mayday Parade Storms the Music Scene with Black Lines Spring Returning By STEPHANIE CONLON

ince the first hints of recording were planted back in July, Mayday Parade fans have been anxiously awaiting the follow up to the band’s first top ten album Monsters In The Closet, which dropped back in 2013. As the Tallahassee quintet’s fifth studio album, it was a fair guess to assume that Black Lines would remain

true to the power/punk pop genre that listeners know and love. Wrong. Perhaps it was the pressure of keeping fans interested, but Black Lines is a beast all its own from the very first chord on the opening track and album single “One of Them Will Destroy the Other.” This track, featuring Dan Lambton from the band Real Friends, defines the journey that the album aims to drag
the listener though from square one through singer Derek Sanders’s merciless vocal delivery and lyrical opening “I don’t know man, I think I’m starting to feel…” Many of the songs on this album would not even be identifiable as Mayday Parade if it were not for a few bars of pop infusion or a strategically placed punchy chorus. It is no wonder Mayday Parade solicited the help of Mike
Sapone, known for his work with bands like Taking Back Sunday and Brand New, to produce the grittier and heavier album. Drawing inspiration from bands like Anberlin, Jimmy Eat World, and even Balance and Composure at times, especially in “Underneath The Tide,” there is nothing about this record that is predictable. Until now, no one even knew that Mayday Parade was even capable of making this kind of sound. The balance of old and new in the record is phenomenal with songs like “Keep in Mind, Transmogrification Is a New Technology” to cater to fans who did not welcome the risky shift in style. Reflecting back on the band’s previous albums full of heartfelt ballads and passionate declarations of teenage love, Black Lines is exactly the daring move that they needed to break back into the genre. This record is the re-birth of Mayday Parade.

Resonant Studios is a recording studio located in Waterbury, Conn. and is owned and operated by Brandon Olsen and Spencer Duffany, both Connecticut natives. The pair met while working at Guitar Center and decided to quit their jobs and fulfill a mutual dream of theirs: to open a recording studio. Being a University of New Haven graduate, Olsen credits his time at UNH for his beginning. “The Music and Sound Recording program gave me a great start. UNH gave me a huge step up; you learn how to work an actual board, checking signal flow and those things you can’t learn on

YouTube.” When asked about why he wanted to get into the business Olsen said, “The whole thing about music is that it is meant to be shared, and the cool thing about us as engineers kind of there for them can create some really magical things. So opening this studio was kind of having our dreams fulfilled while making other people’s dreams come true at the same time.”
The duo believes that creativity is the most important skillset to have in the business, Duffany adding, “Musicians may come in and you’re thinking about how their song could be better and then it’s a reward for them and a reward for other people. And I think that comes from not having a lot of formal training, I’m just thinking about how to make the music good.” Olsen added, “I think
that being a people person is one of the greatest tools that you can have because you’re constantly meeting all different types of people.” Resonant Studios has experience recording all different types of music, from hand percussion to pop to hip-hop to metal. The 2015-2016 Broadway season is shaping up to be a good one, and the Tony eligibility window is still wide open. Some shows have yet to premiere, some are in previews, and some have been drawing a lot of attention with the press. But in the revivals category, it seems nothing is more talked about than Deaf West Theater’s revival of Shiek and Sater’s Spring Awakening. To some, it seems too soon to revive the show; the original production opened on Broadway 9 years ago, in December 2006. To others, they’re saying that the timing couldn’t be more perfect; Broadway is more diverse than ever. Deaf West Theater specializes in bringing theater to deaf audiences using both deaf and hearing actors. The concept, at first, is a little tricky to understand, but at the heart of it all, every deaf actor cast in a part is given a voice, courtesy of another actor. It’s basically two people as two halves, creating a whole character: deaf for the deaf viewers, and hearing for those who don’t understand ASL and can hear. For a while, Broadway was never even in the question for this production, which gave its first performance just over a year ago in a 99 seat theater in Los Angeles. The mastermind behind it all is Michael Arden, the show’s director. A veteran performer with Deaf West Theater (Big River on Broadway, Pippin at the Mark Taper Forum), Arden wanted to try his hand

at directing. The idea for Spring Awakening came from his fiancé, actor Andy Mientus. Mientus had been a part of Spring Awakening’s first national tour playing Hänschen Rilow. Mientus suggested it to Arden, and just a short while later it was being staged. Arden’s vision for the show was to actually incorporate deafness into it, as a plot point. After researching, it turned out that there were bans on the use of sign language and educating the deaf was based on the concept of oralism: speaking and lip reading as an alternative to using sign. All of this was periodappropriate to the time period of Spring Awakening, in 1891 Germany. When casting the show, it had to be decided which characters would be deaf (with a voicing actor), and which would be hearing. Daniel N. Durant plays Moritz Stiefel, one of Spring Awakening’s two male leads. Durant is profoundly deaf: he has never heard a sound in his life. Alex Boniello becomes Durant’s and Moritz’s voice; singing and speaking, while also playing guitar in the on-stage band. The choreography is clever in the ways that Boniello is used, giving cues to Durant so he can keep up with where they’re at in any given scene. The female lead, Wendla Bergmann is the same way; she is played by Sandra Mae Frank and voiced by Katie Boeck. Boeck is another guitarist in the band as well. Spotify Playlist of the Week “Halloweenie”

ell, it’s everyone’s favorite spooky time of year so this week’s playlist is all about scare factor. Most people who listen to music want it to make them happy or sad and don’t really expect anything other than that. Sure, maybe you can throw in that token song about an ex to get the listener angry, but these emotions are aroused pretty easily. Something that is not usually done by music alone is instill fear, which is a rather interesting concept. Maybe fear is more easily achieved through visual stimuli, but nonetheless, it can be done through auditory stimulation alone and this playlist sets out to do just that. Though there are only seven songs, each piece calls for a rather weighty emotional response from the listener. The first piece I wanted to share is “Streaker” by the American electronic artist Tobacco (the solo project of Thomas Fec, frontman of Black Moth Super Rainbow). The
_____________________ thing that really makes this piece terrifying is the over-modulated vocal that gets pounded into the listener’s head throughout the song. The dark synthesizers and trashy drum kit are almost uncomfortable to listen to. And if you really want to lose some sleep, watch the music video for this song. And even though it was produced by comedian Eric Wareheim (of Tim & Eric fame), I can tell you there is nothing humorous about it. It’s disturbing. Another piece that I felt was fitting for this playlist was “Lux Aererna” by Romanian composor György Ligeti. Some may know this piece from its most famous use in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. This piece, written for sixteen solo singers, is unique in the sense that it utilizes a contemporary classical music texture known as “micropolyphony,” developed by Ligeti himself. This technique consists of incredibly dense harmonies that move in and out of one another slowly and irregularly, thus giving the piece an ambiguous
rhythmic structure, again making the listener almost uncomfortable. While this piece isn’t necessarily disturbing in and of itself, it’s out there and I could easily see it being used in a horror movie. Finally, there’s a piece by the drone metal band Sunn O))), “Big Church.” It would have been impossible to create a Halloween themed playlist without including something from this band’s catalogue. Drone metal is a musical style usually overlooked, featuring slow, loud, and heavy guitars playing seemingly endless long-tones. “Big Church” is interesting because it also incorporates a choir and concert chimes to accompany these low and distorted tones. And to top it all off, sprinkled throughout the song there are gravelly, monotone chants reciting something which appears to be in a different language. My friend from high school who introduced me to Sunn O))) instructed me to not listen to them before I went to sleep, and I would pass on the same warning to you.

they do their best to make the studio feel comfortable for artists and anyone who comes in. “You just feel right at home here, we’ve had countless clients say ‘Can we just live here?’ and Brandon and I feel the same way,” Duffany added. Since Olsen and Duffany came from different backgrounds, their advice to current Music & Sound Recording majors at UNH would be “just to keep going. Whatever
route you want to go, you have to show clients that you’re passionate about what they’re doing. Also, just being able to talk to someone and connect with them, they’ll remember you.” Duffany added, “don’t get caught up in all the gear. Do the job because of what it is. It’s music.” Resonant Studios is a beautiful facility with a great staff, all there to share their love of music with their clients. The studio is currently doing a deal where college stu-
dents get 15 percent off of their recording fee, in order to encourage students to fulfill their dreams as much as possible. The cast features over 20 Broadway debuts, including Ali Stroker who made history as Broadway’s first wheelchair bound person ever. Rounding out the company is Broadway vet Krysta Rodriguez as Ilse Neumann, Mientus reprising Hänschen, Treshelle Edmond and Kathryn Gallagher (voice/guitar) splitting Martha Bessell, the role of Ernst Robel being shared by Joshua Castille and Daniel David Stewart (voice/piano), Alex Wyse as Georg Zirschnitz, Miles Barbee and Sean Grandillo (voice/bass) play-
ing Otto Lämmermeier, Stroker as Anna, Amelia Hensley and Lauren Luiz (voice) sharing Thea, Alexandra Winter (harp) as Greta, Patrick Page and Russell Harvard as the six adult men roles, Marlee Matlin and Camryn Mannheim as the six adult women roles. After casting the show, came putting the show together. A lot of the production falls on choreographer Spencer Liff. Liff was able to incorporate ASL and nonverbal cues into his choreography. The nonverbal cues have been extremely helpful to the deaf actors, so they are able to keep on pace with the actor giving them their voice. The show goes virtually unchanged, however. The songs are still
the same songs, and the plot is still the same plot. It just seems like an extra layer has been added. More depth to the show, and more ability to watch the show and feel. Deaf West’s Spring Awakening is an interesting concept, and it seems the public has latched on to it. The show has been gaining nothing but rave reviews since previews started in September. Even better, are the reactions from the hearing and voicing actors; they all say they’ve learned so much and have been so touched working with this deaf and hard of hearing cast. What once seemed impossible is being made possible 8 times a week at the Brooks Atkinson Theater now through January 24, 2016.
The Game Releases Long Awaited The Documentary 2

_____________________ Jayceon Taylor, better known by his stage name The Game, saw virtually instant success in the music industry after being discovered by fellow Compton-based rapper Dr.Dre. Before this milestone in his life, he had paid his dues on the streets of Compton. Taylor was placed into foster care at the age of seven largely due to his parents frequent use of illicit drugs such as heroin and cocaine. Taylor grew up idolizing performers and spent his childhood watching his older brother Jevon work toward his goal of becoming a rapper. In 1989, Taylor had an opportunity to meet N.W.A legend Eazy-E, which he considered a life defining moment. Then tragedy struck at the age of 13; having just been signed by a label, Jevon was shot at a gas station and later died at the hospital at just 17 years old. In 2001, Taylor had fully embraced street life, and with the help of his halfbrother Big Fase held a monopoly on the local drug trade. Alone at his apartment one evening he was assaulted by three men, shot five times, and left for dead. It was after surviving this attempt at his life that he truly decided to pursue his music career. It’s hard to believe it’s been ten years since the release of The Game’s major label debut album The Documentary; an album that sold over 587,000 copies the first week, and has since gone quadruple

platinum. The legacy of The Game is one of instant success, and the revitalization of the west coast hip-hop scene. Announced August 28, 2014, The Documentary 2 is a long awaited two disk sequel to his debut album. Released in two parts, the first disk was dropped on October 8, 2015, while the second disk was held until October 16, 2015. The album features hip-hop powerhouses, including Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Diddy, Snoop Dogg, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, Kanye West, Nas, Lil Wayne, Will.i.am, and many more. The features, as well as the length of the album, allows the sound to swing between the unintentional hilarity of “Standing on Ferraris” feat. Diddy, to the serious message of loyalty in “Dedicated” feat. Future & Sonyae. The album in its entirety is old school West Coast OG style worship that has been crafted with the beautifully full detailed sound of new age hip-hop. It is a perfect combina-
tion of the intensity you would expect from The Game, and the masterfully mixed instrumentals you know producers like Dr. Dre and Will.I.Am bring to the table. The album opens up with a skit titled “Intro” in which an interaction between The Game, and an aggressive stranger ends in a gunshot which pretty much sets the tone of the entire album. This skit leads into the track “On Me” featuring Kendrick Lamar which is four and a half minutes of energetic crowd pleasing gangster rap. The Documentary 2, selling 83,000 copies the first week, is definitely an instant hip-hop classic despite not being as instantly successful as its precursor. It has earned The Game his seventh Number 1 hiphop record title and was only beat out by Selena Gomez’ Revival on Billboard’s top 200. It seems it could potentially stand as the beginning of the end of the barrier that stands between old school rap, and new aged production quality.

Throughout the past seventy years of mainstream cinema, trailers have always been the predominant form of marketing for film. Even 76 years ago, Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz were promoted through radio ads, trailers in a sense. Now, whenever a new trailer is produced for an upcoming film, it is shared by millions on Facebook, reaching the audiences who do not normally attend the cinema yet do use the internet. Recently, the latest trailer for a little film coming up called Star Wars: The Force Awakens premiered. Having previ-
ously released a teaser and a subsequent trailer, this new trailer delves into the plot of The Force Awakens more than the previous two trailers, which had the primary purpose of reminding the world that Star Wars was not dead. This latest trailer introduces Daisy Ridley’s character Rey as the primary protagonist, sets up Kylo Ren as the villain following in Vader’s footsteps, and sets a tone of nostalgia with Han Solo’s presence yet also reaffirms that The Force Awakens will not merely be a feels trip, which was the greatest cause of concern. on Titan: End of the World, or Attack on Titan Part 2, not only fails to live up to the show’s potential, but fails to be a decent movie. The beginning of Attack on Titan: End of the World provides a brief overview of what occurred in the first movie. From there, the movie spirals into a slow burn of stagnant character arcs and a boring momentum in the story. The plot falls flat with predictable twists and questionable moments. While the trailer might have captured the theme of Interstellar, it did not do a good job of portraying the story, scope, and execution of the final film, as there is nothing shown at all. Sometimes, a trailer can be an independent narrative itself. By far, the best trailer of the year is for the upcoming film The Revenant. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, The Revenant is a period drama based off the true story of frontiersmen Hugh Glass, and his quest for survival and revenge after being left for dead from a bear attack. The trailer captures the shots of the Canadian wilderness and the detailed, gritty feel of the
characters. When Hugh starts panting, the panting develops into a continuous beat that sets the mood for a pulse pounding, riveting survival tale that will surely be dark and gritty. Yet what The Revenant trailer captures the best is the beautiful cinematography in the form of long shots of battles between frontiersmen’s and Indians. At the end of the day, a trailer is just as subjective as film itself. Yet in a day and age where there are more films coming out than ever before, it is imperative that trailers do a good job conveying the film they are trying to promote without giving away too much information. Gilmore Girls fans wishes are finally coming true. On October 19, Netflix announced plans to release four 90-minute mini movies featuring super-caffeinated mother daughter team. Gilmore Girls had seven season that ran from 2000 to 2007. It followed Lorelai Gilmore and her daughter Rory as they experienced life in small town Starshollow. You are quickly absorbed into their fast-paced way of talking and running around town, Rory’s life at local private school Chilton and her college decision making between Harvard and Yale. You cheer Lorelai on as she accomplishes her dreams of owning her own inn with her best friend Sookie (Melissa Mc Carthy). Following them through their heartbreak, triumphs, and laughs left all the fans
wanting more when the season ended with Rory’s college graduation and seeing her off into the “real world” of being an adult. Now that news has broken that there will be more episodes to come fans are all over the internet speculating about what they want in the upcoming episodes. What relationships they want to see and where they want to see Lorelai and Rory in their lives. There is an ongoing debate on which boyfriend Rory should be with, if she is with anyone from the original series, personally I’m Team Logan but he’s not too popular with anyone else so it will be interesting to see what happens. Writer Amy Sherman Palladino left the series before the final season and has said that it didn’t end the way she always wanted, that she has always had “the final four words” since episode one. Palladino is on board to write these four episodes so hopefully we find out not only what these four words
are but who she intended to say them! One of the most noticeable hurdles that will need to be overcome with the return of Gilmore Girls is the passing of Edward Herrman, who played Lorelai’s father Richard Gilmore. Other hurdles will be the time that has passed since it last aired, 8 years is a long time so it will take some work to make the Gilmores relevant to society today. So many of us were raised with the Gilmores as inspiration for young women that they could accomplish things as individuals, getting that message across now might be a bit more difficult. Last we saw Rory was leaving to work on President Obama’s campaign. We know how much has changed in our world since that happened, but now it’s time to grab some coffee ( a lot of coffee), some candy, some pizza, pretty much any unhealthy food you can find, and wait for Netflix to make all of our Gilmore dreams come true.

Granted, they are creative and smart, but at times, it can be a bit much. But now I’m just nitpicking. For all lovers of war dramas and Tom Hanks, this movie is for you.

H
ey there UNH, The last I wrote, I had depicted the journey that was diving the Great Barrier Reef! I honestly hope you guys enjoyed reading last week’s adventure as much as I did writing it. This week, we shall continue with the activities of Lecture Recess. Day three set off with a slow start. It was about noon by the time everyone was up and moving and we decided to spend the early afternoon in the botanical gardens. We chose the rain forest path and took an easy stroll along the boardwalk. We spent about an hour moving through all of the beautiful foliage before heading back to the hostel to get ready for White Water Rafting! The bus retrieved us from the hostel and we set off on our way up the riverside. At the top, we were geared up with life vests, helmets, and paddles. We carried our raft down to the river from the road and were taught different maneuvers by our team leader. After learning the basics, we practiced rowing in-sync in a small lagoon-ish area and then we were off! As we paddled towards the first rapids, I felt top heavy with excitement and adrenaline took over. It wasn’t long before we hit a rough patch and were moved about backwards. After successfully making our way through the rocks and out of the current, we tied off on the side to watch
the rest of the teams work their way down. There were a few close calls and then one raft came in too fast and a member was thrown from the raft! He was tossed about for some time in the rapids until he caught the throw bag and was pulled to the side and out of the strong current. As he neared our raft we grabbed hold of him and hoisted him in. We stayed to put until the last raft came through and then we returned our new addition to his original raft, which was waiting downstream. After the first few sets of rapids, we came to a calm stretch of river and jumped from the raft for a swim. We floated along easily while our team leader drifted in the raft further down stream to a pickup point. As we neared our team’s pickup spot, we swam over to the side and out of the current in order to pull ourselves into the raft. The rest of the experience went by in a flash and before I knew it we were pulling the raft from the water and drying off while enjoying some hot tea. Upon returning to the hostel later that evening, we were starting to feel a tad hungry and decided to head over to the night markets for some dinner. It came to the groups attention that some people have never had eaten at Pie Face before, so it was a unanimous decision to have assorted meat pies for dinner. After dinner, we wandered through the night markets picking out souvenirs to bring
home (*ahem* Christmas presents: aka, Everyone is getting a boomerang) and then we returned for another early night. Day four had a pretty early start, as we wanted to beat the Sunday traveler’s traffic on our way up to the Daintree Rainforest. It was about a two-hour ride to the river crossing, a fifteen-minute ferry ride, and then another half hour to the Daintree Discover Center. In the Discover Center, we explored the rainforest canopy on the aerial walkway and learned about the eating habits of Cassowaries on the boardwalk circuit. After completing the circuit, we checked into our hostel and then set out on a hike and found a swimming hole, which the guys immediately took advantage of. After a swim we ended up at a local restaurant for dinner and watched the Rugby League Finals game. Attending uni in Townsville, it was absolutely incredible to experience the Townsville Cowboys come out with a one point win over the Brisbane Broncos in over time. The energy was palpable as the final play completed the season and the restaurant erupted in cheers from all of the rugby enthusiasts. That night, we walked back to our hostel and we were able to see every star in the sky. The eerie lack of street lighting allowed me to experience one of the most beautiful night skies I’ve seen in my time in Australia. After lying on a side road for an extended

period of time, one of the guys suggested that we head back to play the Australian version of “Cards Against Humanity.” The fifth and final day of our adventure was met bright and early as we scurried to eat breakfast and pack up the car before checking out of our hostel and catching the bus to go zip lining. In the next half hour we were fitted with harnesses and helmets and making our way up to the lift. As we were raised into the canopy, our guides told us about the history of the land and pointed out some indigenous plant
species. Some parts of the tour were set up in partners while others were solo runs. After an hour in the trees, my partner and I raced to the finish of the last leg of the tour and we de-harnessed and were on the bus back to the hostel. Once we arrived, we piled into the car and settled in for the eight-hour car ride back to uni. The Daintree Rainforest had one last surprise for us, however. As we were winding our way along the coast towards the ferry stop, a wild cassowary emerged from the brush to cross the road directly in
front of our car. Awe filled the vehicle, as it was truly a magnificent creature. I can say with ease that this trip has been one of the greatest experiences in my twenty years of life and it has been a time that I will not soon forget.
