This Year’s USGA Yearly Budget Process BY KARINA KRUL & LAUREN COHEN

A

s the end of the

semester rolls around, Nicolette Angelli, current USGA Treasurer, is preparing the new budget process for RSOs to complete for the next academic year. This is a process every RSO must go through, and very few students know what it entails beforehand. The budget process allows every RSO to express their needs to get the funds they need to operate. The budgets for next year is due by all RSOs on March 22nd. Before Angelli began writing the Yearly Budget Process, there were two open forums for students to provide their

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Page 7

A Letter From an Iraqi Student on the Travel Ban “The identity of this student is to remain anonymous for the safety of his family in Iraq. I am not entirely sure where his family members are, but they could be in jeopardy if they are still in disputed territory and it were known their son/husband/father was in the U.S. We can only hope they are in a safer place.” - Kathy Kautz de Arango Executive Director of International and Multicultural Programs and Services

S

uccess is not easy to obtain, but my dream has always been to study in the United States. I am from a small village in Hawigha City, Kirkuk, which is located in the northern area of Iraq. I am married and have four kids. I am an electrical engineer who had aspirations of earning a Master’s degree here in America. In June 2013, I had a chance to get a scholarship to study here. I completed all of the requirements to receive a sponsorship. In March 2014, I had an interview at the US embassy in Baghdad and was preparing for my final step in the process of obtaining my visa for travel. I was so very close to achieving my goal but I almost lost my opportunity on June 10, 2014 when something went terribly wrong: ISIS invaded my city. I was so sad for all of our people, but also because I was feeling like my plans may never happen. I was concerned. I thought, “what if ISIS knows about me and my plan to leave for my studies? Will I die?” It wasn’t until about five months later that I received an email from the US embassy that my visa was complete. I was so happy, but needed to figure out how to escape the ISIS controlled area. I knew it would have to be done in secret. I told no one that my plan was to travel to Baghdad. I did tell my parents that I was going to the United States. My father told me “Are you crazy? You are digging your own grave.” My mother worried, “if they catch you, they will kill you. How can you leave us and your kids?” I told my parents that I had a goal and my plan was to attain it. I told my parents that I will travel and bear these problems. I did find a secret way to get to Baghdad. It was a dangerous plan but on December 26, 2014, I traveled by car with strangers. My parents knew of my departure; however, I didn’t even tell my wife. I remember the driver of the vehicle telling me that they can’t be responsible for keeping my life safe during the trip. He went on to say that if we could just cross the fighting point, then we would be safe. I cannot describe my insecurities. I spent two nights on the street sleeping. The sounds were strange and unsettling. Once I arrived in Baghdad, I felt a little better, but I was still not safe. After two days in Baghdad, I received my passport from the US embassy. I called my family and let them know that I would be leaving in ten days for America. I felt like a bird beginning to fly, but I knew I would start this journey without a farewell from my family. I wished I could hug my parents, my kids and my wife. On my way to the airport I got to speak by phone to my father and oldest child. My oldest child asked me when I would return and I cried. Every day that I remember his question, I cry. My father’s encouraging words were “you should be strong; you have a long journey.” There were no departing words from my wife, just tears and the sounds of her speaking my name. I arrived at the airport with no goodbye. I finally arrived in the United States on January 23, 2015. I was happy to complete my first step. The dream was alive, but I came bearing many personal problems. They have gotten a little easier as I meet supportive people in the U.S. that help me through difficult times. I am still reaching for the moon with their help. I am a small village man with big dreams. I know my family is proud because I am studying in the United States. I am earning my success. Recently, I have begun the process of trying to get visas for my wife and my children to come visit me. In mid-January of 2017, my family also had an opportunity to escape our beloved farm. They spent three long days walking to safety. This journey was not easy, as my youngest child is merely two years old and my mother is not a young woman. When I received word that they had escaped to a safer Iraq, I was relieved and happy. Since coming to the University of New Haven, I have made a lot of friends and have had support from many UNH and ELS faculty. I have a new diverse extended family here that consists of Americans, other Iraqis, and people from around the world. I want nothing more than to have both this new extended family and my wife and children with me for the remainder of my studies. If the escape was not hard enough for the family, the process of getting them here is proving to be even more difficult. On January 27, 2017, President Trump signed an Executive Order that could prevent them from coming. Iraq is one of the seven Muslim majority countries that are listed in his “ban.” I have tried to wrap my head around this ban and tried to understand it. I am certain my children don’t know what ISIS means. I am certain they don’t understand a ban. I am certain that every time I hear my oldest son on the phone ask me “when will we come?” I cry.

Russell Westbrook is in the running for NBA MVP

When evaluating a player’s value, you have to imagine the team without that player. Without Westbrook’s heroics, the Thunder wouldn’t be in striking distance of a playoff spot. But Westbrook isn’t a shoein for the award. If other voters value win totals over stat lines, three other players are in the mix: James Harden, LeBron James, and Kawhi Leonard. Cuban says the race is a toss-up between these three players. Harden, of the Houston Rockets, made the transition to point guard this year, a move that was initially questioned, but the experiment paid off in a huge way, as Harden has averaged 28.8 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 11.3 assists per game. He ranks third in points per game and first in assists per game, which proves he can be a point guard and run an offense. Harden has the Rockets with a firm hold of the third seed in the West.

Winners: Vancouver Canucks: The Canucks made several moves at the deadline that show this team is working on their future rather than bolstering the present. to find out what my fellow peers were doing for their time off! It seems like the general consensus is that most of us will be spending our time asleep. For those of you vacationing with friends or family, enjoy the sun because we certainty aren’t seeing any consistency in West Haven. If you’re doing nothing, then that’s just as good as sleeping, so enjoy that, too! other customers not having this problem. This week, I wanted to mention something I found in the section. Target has stationary cards from $1-$3 – you might be wondering, “why the heck do I need stationary cards?” Well my friend, you might. They have fun designs and colors for any occasion, as well as cards that say “thank you,” and “with love.” These are perfect for so many reasons. Say you want to do something nice like thank your teacher for a great semester at the end of the year – you give her a card, and now she thinks of you as a perfect cherub. How about if it’s your roommate’s birthday and you totally forgot about it? Good thing you have a blank card with pretty designs on it! You’re welcome, friends.

Spotify Playlist of the Week BY CAITLIN CARNEY STAFF WRITER

“New Releases”

Follow the Charger Bulletin on Spotify!

1.) “Cold feat. Future” — Maroon 5 In Maroon 5’s latest single, “Cold,” lead singer, Adam Levine, sings of the heartbreak one feels when a loved one gives them the cold shoulder. The tune is incredibly catchy while also incorporating deep emotion. Future is also featured in the track, explaining all that he did for this loved one only to be left behind anyways. “Cold” was released on February 14th and has risen to Maroon 5’s 2nd most played song on Spotify.

2.) “Dirty Laundry” — All Time Low All Time Low’s latest single, “Dirty Laundry,” is yet another emotional song about a loved one. Lead singer, Alex Gaskarth, is still attracted to a girl saying, “Dirty laundry looks good on you.” He explains that while she’s keeping secrets and her “dirty laundry” keeps piling up, he’s done bad things too, so he doesn’t care about anything bad she has done. This single is the first of many releases in preparation for All Time Low’s summer tour. 3.) “Somethin’ I’m Good At” — Brett Eldredge Brett Eldredge’s latest single shows that the one thing he is good at is being loyal, and just a good boyfriend in general. This single holds true to Eldredge’s usual lighthearted, upbeat style. This song will make anyone want to dance. “Somethin’ I’m Good At” was released on February 24th and is already the 3rd top played song for Eldredge on Spotify. 4.) “Green Light” — Lorde After a long wait, Lorde released her latest single, “Green Light.” The song describes the confusion felt when a loved one gives up after promising to be with you forever. She keeps waiting on the “green light” which will let her back into her loved one’s life. The single manages to be incredibly catchy while also portraying the raw emotion felt by Lorde as she tries, but fails, to forget her loved one who let her down. 5.) “Hypnotised” — Coldplay Coldplay’s newest single “Hypnotised” describes how easy it is to lose all control when in love. Lead singer, Chris Martin, explains that simply looking into the eyes of his lover puts him in a trance and causes him to be “hypnotised.” The song repeats over and over how hypnotised this loved one makes Martin feel, but he also explains that being hypnotised is okay because the world around him has changed for the better.

6.) “Lost Boys” — Ocean Park Standoff Ocean Park Standoff’s latest song, “Lost Boys,” gives listeners a good feeling as the song is very upbeat. The song explains the changes that take place while growing up, but the band is choosing to live in the moment instead of worrying about all of these new changes. The band’s song can easily become an anthem for all young people who want to live their lives to the fullest and stay forever young. 7.) “Love” — Lana Del Rey Lana Del Rey’s latest single, “Love,” explains the feelings and raw emotion felt when someone is in love. The single is filled with so much emotion that it can cause you to feel as though you have experienced the same emotions simply due to how well the emotions are portrayed. Del Rey’s song holds true to her typical theatrical, emotional music. The single was released on February 18th and is Del Rey’s top listened to song on Spotify. 8.) “Nancy Mulligan” — Ed Sheeran Sheeran gets in touch with his Irish heritage on his new album Divide.“Nancy Mulligan” is an Irish folk tune which tells the story of how his grandparents met and their entire love story, detailing the opposition facing his grandparents and their forbidden love. This song is likely to make anyone want to dance as well as yearn for a love as deep as the one Sheeran’s grandparents had. 9.) “Something Just Like This feat. Coldplay” — The Chainsmokers The Chainsmokers’ new single “Something Just Like This” brings with it a long-awaited collaboration with Coldplay. The song mixes Coldplay’s usual entrancing music with the Chainsmokers’ dance-type music and catchy beats. The single was released on February 22nd and is the 3rd most played song for the Chainsmokers on Spotify, released to build anticipation for their album Memories: Do Not Open releasing on April 7th.

Remy Ma was in prison, Minaj’s career took off. Her albums Pink Friday, Pink Friday Reloaded: Roman’s Revenge, and the Pinkprint were all released. She received Grammy nominations, awards, and glory while Remy was imprisoned. In 2014, Remy Ma was released and the time spent away did not soften her grudge. Recently, the drama has started once again. Minaj recently made appearances on Gucci Mane’s “Make Love” and Jason Derulo’s “Swalla”, in which she references herself as the queen of rap and emphasizes her success by making fun of Remy Ma’s sales. Remy Ma is not taking these attacks lying down. In response to Minaj’s attacks, she released her own track “Shether” with an album cover showing a dismantled Barbie Doll with a pink wig, an unsubtle message destroying Nicki’s biggest symbol. “Shether” comes for Minaj in more ways than one. Throughout the track, Remy Ma digs through all of Minaj’s dirty laundry, including her relationship with Meek Mill, her previous relationships with other artists, and her disloyalty to Meek Mill by rekindling her friendships

There are many reasons why “Blue Lives Matter” is irrelevant, offensive and just straight up nonsense in my opinion. The “Blue Lives Matter” movement started in late2014, early-2015 after the shooting death of two police officers in Brooklyn. It’s a pro-police movement that, from my observation, appeals to white people - I have not seen one non-white person support this cause. The symbol for “Blue Lives Matter” is a black and white flag with a blue line in the middle, as blue is the symbolic to the police forces in America.
