This week marks the fifth anniversary of the death of Pope John Paul II, and some fear the miracle needed to make him a saint will fall to the wayside of extensive scrutiny. The miracle, which many considered to be a shoe-in option for his sainthood, involves the curing of Simon-Pierre of Parkinson’s disease. The young nun, who knew of John Paul’s own ailment, prayed to him and was miraculously healed exactly two years after his death. However, many controversies have arisen over the Vatican’s ability to accept the cure as a miracle, which cannot be fully proven without extensive medical examinations and Simon-Pierre’s eventual death. A prominent Polish newspaper has suggested, in addition, that Simon-Pierre may have never had Parkinson’s, and instead may have been diagnosed incorrectly. The disease she probably had, although not named, would have a similar morphology but be curable. This curable disease would not qualify for a miracle and would officially nullify the sainthood qualifications. The Vatican hopes to address this issue with additional doctors and consultations. Over the past 6 months the American Criminal Justice Association has been working hard to fundraise enough money to support out trip to the national

Pope John Paul II has also been called into scrutiny for his long-heralded battle over sexual scandals within the Vatican. John Paul worked vigorously when the scandal erupted in 2002 in the United States. Under Pope Benedict’s power, one of John Paul’s championed leaders, Rev. Marcial Maciel of Mexico and of the Legionaries of Christ, was removed from his position to live a life of “reserved prayer” in order to make up for his sins. These cases, which all fell during John Paul II 26 year reign as pope, have caused some scrutiny amongst the public in the beatification process, but the Vatican seems to think otherwise. Saraiva Martins suggests that the abuse scandals will not have any effect on his ascendance into sainthood. John Paul II’s rise to sainthood will continue as his miracle is evaluated by Vatican doctors and professionals. With her death being considered an “extreme” means of verification, the Vatican will have to expand on its current progress in order to determine the validity of the Pope’s posthumous miracle.

Grey Wolf (Canis Iupus)
Grey wolves are the largest species of the Canidae family and survivors of the Ice Age era originating during Late Pleistocene 300,000 years ago. They are considered apex predators, meaning that they do not contain predators of their own. They lived in much of Eurasia and North America until they were annihilated due to human hunting. Human hunting of grey wolves is considered both sport and extermination because of threats to livestock and people. Grey Wolves are sexually dimorphic in terms of weight and their physique. Males usually weigh around 79 pounds on average while females typically weigh 20% less with narrower muzzles, foreheads, and less massive shoulders. Grey wolves rely on their endurance rather than their speed. They can trot at speeds of up to six miles per hour and reach
a maximum speed of 40 miles per hour during a chase. Their paws are designed to tread easily in snow and other terrains.

April Fools’ Day
Every year, Apr. 1 is the day all comedians and pranksters wait for. It is April Fools’ Day, a day where you play jokes on all of your friends and get joked on in return. But who started this day and when did it all start? Although the day, also called All Fools’ Day, has been celebrated for several centuries by different cultures, its exact origins remain a mystery. Some historians speculate that April Fools’ Day dates back to 1582 when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. People, who were slow to get the news and failed to recognize that the start of the new year had been moved to Jan. 1, became the butt of jokes and hoaxes because they still celebrated the day during the last week of March through Apr. 1. Many of these jokes included having paper fish placed on their backs and being referred to as a “poisson ‘avril”
or April fish. This saying was meant to symbolize a young, easily caught fish and a gullible person. Historians also link April Fools’ Day to ancient festivals such as Hilaria, which is celebrated in Rome at the end of March involving people dressing up in disguises. Other speculations include that the day was tied to the vernal equinox, or the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, when Mother Nature “fooled people’ with changing, unpredictable weather. Later on, April Fools’ Day spread throughout Britain during the 18th century. In Scotland, the tradition became a two-day event, starting with “hunting the gowk,” in which people were sent on phony errands (gowk is a word for cuckoo bird, a symbol for fool) and followed by Tailie Day, which involved pranks played on people’s derrieres, such as pinning fake tails or “kick me” signs on them.
In modern times, people have gone to great lengths to create elaborate April Fools’ Day hoaxes. Newspapers, radio and TV stations, and web sites have participated in the Apr. 1 tradition of reporting outrageous fictional claims that have fooled their audiences. In 1957, the BBC reported that Swiss farmers were experiencing a record spaghetti crop and showed footage of people harvesting noodles from trees; numerous viewers were fooled. In 1985, Sports Illustrated tricked many of its readers when it ran a madeup article about a rookie pitcher named Sidd Finch who could throw a fastball over 168 miles per hour. In 1996, Taco Bell, the fast-food restaurant chain, duped people when it announced it had agreed to purchase Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell and intended to rename it See APRIL page 3

On April 10, the University of New Haven International Student Association (ISA) will host the university's 30th annual International Festival, featuring displays from over 20 countries and UNH clubs, student performers, and foods from around the world. New Haven police Officer Curtis Miller was on his way to a church meeting in his hometown of Stonington when he saw ominous, thick black smoke ahead. He skipped his exit and drove right into the fiery scene on Interstate 95. "All I could see were flames everywhere. Diesel fuel was on fire all over the road. You could feel the intense heat inside my truck," Miller said this week. He saw hundreds of feet of wire guardrail plowed down by the semi, which ruptured its fuel tanks and ignited the diesel. State Police say the rig erupted into flames before plowing into a bridge abutment and careening onto Taugwonk Road in a massive fireball. Miller came upon the scene about a minute later and pulled over. "I ran down the embankment to where the fire was to see if there were any other vehicles involved on that secondary road. But my main concern was to see if I could render aid to the driver of that tractor-trailer," he said. He inched toward the cab, but the boiling heat and explosions kept him
back. He inched closer. "I was trying to get a visual to see if I could see anybody. These flames were shooting 60 feet into the air. People were telling me they could see it from the New London Bridge. I could actually feel my clothes starting to melt," he said. "I knew the guy had to be dead. There was nothing else I could do down there." Miller, 25, a two-year member of the New Haven department, was one of the first motorists to come upon the catastrophic tractor-trailer crash Saturday that killed the driver and closed down the highway for hours. The truck was carrying stage equipment for a Carrie Underwood concert at Mohegan Sun. At the show, she dedicated a song to the driver. Back on the highway, Miller grabbed his reflective police vest out of his personal vehicle. Visibility was near zero because of smoke and people already had stopped to take pictures. Over the next few minutes, Miller directed traffic and located any witnesses he could. On borrowed paper, he jotted down names and contact information and accounts of what happened, which he later relayed to State Police.
Fire engines started arriving, including companies from Mystic, where he was a volunteer firefighter as a teenager. According to Miller, he originally wanted to be a New Haven firefighter and attended the University of New Haven, where he got a degree in fire science. In 2007, he applied for the New Haven Fire Department, and when he didn't get hired he decided to apply as a police officer, with no regrets. He likes the variety of the job and community interaction, working evening shift patrolling the Dixwell and Newhallville neighborhoods. "You're doing aspects of everything. One day you're locking somebody up and the next day you're helping them out because they have a medical issue. Every situation is unique. Yeah, I like what I'm doing." Police have not released the identity of the driver, who was so badly burned he had to be identified through dental records. Miller said he wished he could have done more. "I feel like you almost have a duty to act, on or off duty," he said. "I would hope that if it was me, somebody would have tried to do the same thing."

Looking to write your next term paper on the health care reform? To find reliable published sources of information for your course assignments, the library has many electronic options. From the Library web page, with your UNH network username and password you can get full text articles and books related to your topic. It doesn’t even matter if you are not on campus! The menu listings on the Library Home page for these sources are Catalog – UNH, Databases, and
Finding Information in the Library
Journals. Following is an example of what can be found in each of these, using the current hot topic of the pros and cons of the Health Care bill. Catalog – UNH is the library’s online catalog (also a database, but that’s another story), which lists not only the printed books on the shelves in the library, but also many full text online books. We especially cater to those published by the U.S. government on topics important to the UNH academic programs. Typing in “health care” as subject keywords and selecting Quick Limit can minimize 2000 results into a list of over 400. The
articles are sorted by date, with the most recent being ones: White House Forum on Health Reform (2009), a 54 page book published by the Office of the President, covering all the issues (pro and con) about the current health care legislation. Other full text books from this search include government hearings, which are filled with expert testimony on related topics such as ways to reduce the cost of health insurance, strengthening the Medicare payment system, and strengthening employerprovided health care – as well as exploring the truth about veterans’ suicides, not the intended topic, but

With gifts from alumni and parents, the school can provide financial aid and scholarships, gifts to the different academic schools, sports teams, and construction projects on campus. On Apr. 5 through Apr. 7, the University of New Haven Annual Fund SPUD members will be hosting a “Price is Right” Campaign. With the “Price is Right” Campaign, SPUD is hoping to raise awareness about the Annual Fund and what it does. SPUD is aiming to educate the University of New Haven community on the value of alumni giving back to the university. Starting Apr. 5, there will be price tags up all over campus and the University of New Haven Annual Fund will have tables

Teachers failing to comply with these regulations will face hearing for disciplinary action. While the rule does not mention any restrictions for students, students are held in confines to the rule and will be subjected to suspension for violating the “sanctity of the educational threshold for either demonstrating or teaching any sexual behavior.” Parents in favor of this new school proposal have all agreed that this is the way to go. Martha Stockholm, who has joined other parents in lobbying for the 69 Exclusion Rule to take effect in nearby Seattle, said, “other schools should take notice. The reality is knowledge is powerful, and this sort of knowledge early on can be very dangerous and corrupting. Kids deserve the right to be kids and not be subjected to or exposed to
adult-like behavior.” Outcry from parents surfaced just after a fourth grade student came home and told her parents that, while her teacher had been writing the number 69 in a division problem, another classmate said, “My dogs 69’d this morning,” and proceeded to explain to her and other students the oral sex subtext by drawing a picture of his pets acting out. The student was later detained by security after successfully bringing his dogs to school for a “show and tell” during lunchtime. When asked why he brought his pets for “show and tell,” the student allegedly said, “Well, my parents are at work right now.” The classmate, who has not been identified, is serving a six-day suspension and has been asked to write a 1,000-word essay on why his behavior was wrong. Still, others have cited the policy as “ridiculous.” One parent called the new rule “pointless since children will learn about the meaning sooner or later.” Despite parents in opposition to the motion, the
school says it is taking the means necessary to prevent encouragement of sexual experimentation for future generations of students. In fact, Tempershed administration has decided to install a strict “No Sex in School” plan that will prohibit sex knowledge as the education it will enforce. This will implement the termination of health classes, the removal of computers in classrooms, and a more conservative wardrobe by students and teachers alike. Danny Moldy, a parent of a sixth grader, shot down the plan as a way of ignoring the issue: “So, the solution to the problem is to pretend it doesn’t exist? Just not talk about it? You can’t keep children innocent forever. Sex is everywhere. 69 is just a number that happens to resemble something else. Chris Berman joined ESPN in 1979 and has hosted numerous programs during his three decades with the network, including SportsCenter, Baseball Tonight, Monday Night Countdown, NFL Primetime, Major League Baseball games, the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and the U.S. Open. He anchored ABC's Super Bowl pregame shows in 2000, 2003, and 2006 and has covered 23 MLB all-star games. Happy April Fools Day! I hope everyone is enjoying a day full of jokes and pranks. I’m sure SCOPE Co-Chair Glenn Altshuler will do something to my office this week, so shout out to him! So in other news this week, I’m ready to bash on some people on Facebook! Surprisingly, amidst the bandwagons of mafia war playing, note writing, and formspring questions (don’t even get me started on that one), a new trend has emerged. Myself and four other students flew out of JFK airport on Tuesday afternoon and arrived in sunny Burbank, California at 3:21pm PT for an almostweek long conference about advertising, college newspaper management, and many other useful skills that can pertain to anybody interested in the business of media. Only at a school like UNH could this entire trip -- 6 days and 5 nights -- be funded by a student government. Although stu-
dents paid for some registration costs and their own personal souvenirs, all other costs were funded by The Charger Bulletin as a part of the Undergraduate Student Government Association. In addition to many sessions, workshops, and roundtable discussions, we also had some free time out in Los Angeles. During this time, we visited Manhattan and Santa Monica beaches, checked out the Hollywood sign, Mulholland Drive, and many other sight-seeing locations throughout the city. OBVIOUSLY the answer is not posting the information in the first place! Internet? Why post those pictures of you puking up a funnel worth of alcohol? Maybe you really should not have posted those pictures of your super short and skanky Halloween costume. Or maybe you should be more careful at parties that you obviously should not be at. Angry about inappropriate comments your friends make on Facebook? JUST DELETE THEM. Changing your Facebook name does nothing for one’s integrity: it just makes you look like a fool for thinking it would help you land that super job. So really…stop with the “Elizabeth” or “Marie” or whatever other middle name might be lingering out there in cyber land. Changing your Facebook profile name is just another

But, in the very end, don’t forget about all of the wonderful conferences, trips, events, and parties that the university clubs host. There are over 60 clubs and organizations that are a part of the USGA, and each receives a part of the $1.3 million budget (a conservative estimate, mind you) that the organization deals with this year. So get out there and take a chunk of that money; do something good with it. Until next time, kiddies!

Shout Out to the Office of Residential Life By HEATHER BROWN STAFF WRITER

Every year room selection is, to say the least, interesting. This year, I have to give the Office of Residential Life staff credit. They went from pushing for an online room registration system to having to scrap it because of the changes to the housing policies. Now granted, I am a senior and don’t have to worry at all about finding a room for next year, but as a silent observer of the process I am extremely impressed with how far ORL has gone to find a place for everyone. I am also impressed with the fact that the transition back to a meeting style form of registration
was seamless to anyone who was there. Students were orderly and seemed to understand that the ORL staff was doing the best they could to make them happy when where they were living. Now I am not saying that the changes to the housing policies were done in the correct way, but I think that ORL has done the best with what it has and they continue to work to get everyone a place to live for next year. Can I say that I would be happy with the situation if I had to live it? Not at all. What I am saying though is that students should take a moment and recognize the efforts being made on their behalf. Many schools would not take the time to find you a roommate or to help you locate apartment
buildings in the area. They would just say you were out of luck. Students here at the University of New Haven are extremely lucky. We have administration that meets with us when we as students voice that it’s necessary. We have so many offices geared toward helping us succeed and making us happy to be a UNH student. We have amazing events every day to keep us occupied. This time, we should all take a moment and realize how lucky we are to have the ORL staff we have. I would like to thank them all for working hard every day to make sure I have had a room on or near campus each year I have been a UNH student. THANKS ORL!

Double Suicide Bombings Kill 38 on Moscow Subway

MOSCOW – Terror returned to the heart of Russia, with two deadly suicide bombings on the Moscow subway at rush hour, including an attack at the station beneath the headquarters of the secret police. At least 38 people were killed and more than 60 wounded in Monday morning’s blasts, the first such attacks in Moscow in six years. Russian police have killed several Islamic militant leaders in the North Caucasus recently, including one last week in the Kabardino-Balkariya region, which raised fears of retaliatory strikes and escalating bloodshed by the militants. As smoke billowed through the subway tunnels not far from the Kremlin and dazed survivors streamed out of the vast transportation system, al-Qaida-affiliated Web sites were abuzz with celebration of the attacks by the two female suicide bombers. The bombings showed that the beleaguered rebels are still strong enough to inflict harm on an increasingly assertive Russia, and they followed a warning last month from Chechen rebel leader Doku Umarov that “the war is coming to their cities.” Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who built much of his political capital by directing a fierce war against Chechen separatists a decade ago, promised to track down and kill the organizers of what he called a “disgusting” crime. “The terrorists will be destroyed,” he said on national television. In a televised meeting with President Dmitry Medvedev, Federal Security Service head Alexander Bortnikov said the remains of the two bombers pointed to a Caucasus connection. “We will continue the fight against terrorism unswervingly and to the end,” Medvedev said. Umarov, the Chechen rebel leader, has relied on al-Qaida’s financial support and has several alQaida emissaries in his entourage, said Alexander Ignatenko, the head of the independent Moscowbased Institute for Religion and Politics, who has closely followed the Islamic insurgency in the
Caucasus. “Al-Qaida has established a presence in the North Caucasus, like they
did in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Somalia and Europe,” Ignatenko told The Associated Press. The militants’ links with al-Qaida also are recognized by other experts on terrorism. Militants in the Caucasus have declared the creation of an Islamic state as their top goal. Radical Islamic sects have spread throughout the Caucasus region and parts of Russia as well, with religious schools set up. In Chechnya, Kremlin-backed strongman Ramzan Kadyrov has conducted a campaign to impose Islamic values in an effort to blunt the appeal of hard-line Islamic separatists. Monday’s first explosion took place just before 8 a.m. at the Lubyanka station in central Moscow, beneath the notorious headquarters of the Federal Security Service or FSB, the KGB’s main successor agency. The FSB is a symbol of power under Putin, a former KGB officer who headed the agency before his election as president in 2000. About 45 minutes later, a second blast hit the Park Kultury station on the same subway line, which is near renowned Gorky Park. In both cases, the bombs were detonated as the trains pulled into the stations and the doors were opening. “I was getting off the train when I heard the sound of an explosion and saw clouds of smoke,” said Yegor Barbatunov, 29. “The (Park Kultury) station was jammed with people trying to get out, but there was no panic. I saw a young man walking past, blood pouring off his head and neck and trickling to the floor.” Added Alevtina Rogatova, a 23-year-old student who was on the same train: “I smelled burning plastic and heard cries of ‘let the wounded through.’” Amateur video on Rus-

station. One video showed gruesome images of dead passengers sprawled inside a mangled subway car and a bloody leg lying on a station platform. Passengers streamed out of the stations, many crying and making frantic calls on cell phones. The wounded were put on ambulances and helicopters, some with their heads wrapped in bloody bandages, as sirens wailed. Traffic was paralyzed as large sections of downtown were closed off. Some gypsy cab drivers jacked up their rates for panicky passengers trying to get to work, drawing a harsh rebuke from Orthodox Patriarch Kirill later in the day. “Any desire to profit on the grief of others brings nothing but grief in return,” Patriarch Kirill said after a liturgy. At 4 p.m., the two subway stations reopened and dozens boarded waiting trains. “It’s really terrifying,” said Vasily Vlastinin, 16. “It’s become dangerous to ride the metro, but I’ll keep taking the metro. You have to get to school, to college, to work somehow.” Both stations had been scrubbed clean. Holes left by shrapnel in the granite were the only reminder of the day’s tragic bombings. The ornate Moscow subway system is the world’s second-busiest after Tokyo’s, carrying around 7 million passengers on an average workday, and is a key element in running the sprawling and traffic-choked city. The last confirmed terrorist attack in Moscow was in August 2004, when a suicide bomber blew herself up outside a subway station, killing 10 people. Chechen rebels claimed responsibility. NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Insults and threats followed 15-year-old Phoebe Prince almost from her first day at South Hadley High School, targeting the Irish immigrant in the halls, library and in vicious cell phone text messages. Phoebe, ostracized for having a brief relationship with a popular boy, reached her breaking point and hanged herself after one particularly hellish day in January — a day that, according to officials, included being hounded with slurs and pelted with a beverage container as she walked home from school. Now, nine teenagers face charges in what a prosecutor called "unrelenting" bullying, including two teen boys charged with statutory rape and a clique of girls charged with stalking, criminal harassment and violating Phoebe's civil rights. School officials won't be charged, even though authorities say they knew about the bullying and that Phoebe's mother brought her concerns to at least two of them. Northwestern District Attorney Elizabeth Scheibel, who announced the charges Monday, said the events before Phoebe's death on Jan. 14 were "the culmination of a nearly three-month campaign of verbally assaultive behavior and threats of physical harm" widely known among the student body. "The investigation revealed relentless activity directed toward Phoebe, designed to humiliate her and to make it impos-
sible for her to remain at school," Scheibel said. "The bullying, for her, became intolerable." Scheibel said the case is still under investigation and that one other person could be charged. It wasn't immediately known Monday whether the teens who have been charged have attorneys. Scheibel said the harassment began in September, occurring primarily in school and in person, although some of it surfaced on Facebook and in other electronic forms. At least four students and two faculty members intervened to try to stop it or report it to administrators, she said. Schiebel refused to discuss the circumstances of the rape charges. No school officials are being charged because they had "a lack of understanding of harassment associated with teen dating relationships," and the school's code of conduct was interpreted and enforced in an "inconsistent" way, Scheibel said. "Nevertheless, the actions — or inactions — of some adults at the school are troublesome," she said. A message seeking comment was left Monday for South Hadley Schools Superintendent Gus A. Sayer. Phoebe was born in Bedford, England and moved to County Clare, Ireland, when she was 2. She moved last summer to South Hadley, home to Mount Holyoke College, because the family had relatives there. Her family has since moved away and could not immediately be located for comment. Scheibel spoke for them at a news conference to announce the
charges. "The Prince family has asked that the public refrain from vigilantism in favor of allowing the judicial system an opportunity to provide a measure of justice for Phoebe," she said. Some students accused of participating in the bullying have been disciplined by the school and will not be returning to classes. The Massachusetts Legislature cited Prince's death and the apparent suicide of 11-year-old Carl Walker-Hoover of Springfield last year when members passed anti-bullying legislation earlier this month. South Hadley is among several college towns in western Massachusetts that pride themselves on their urbane cultural offerings, good schools and safe streets. After Phoebe's death, the community formed an anti-bullying task force that drew more than 400 people to its first meeting in February. Robert Judge, a South Hadley selectman and task force member, said hundreds of people have become involved in hope that something good comes from the incident. "Like most towns, we like to think of ourselves as a good place to live, and then this happens and your reputation is sullied nationally and even internationally, and people look at you differently, and they make assumptions," Judge said.

subway attacks. Obama telephoned Medvedev to convey the condolences of the United States. New York increased security in its transportation network with officers assigned to subways overnight held in place so they overlapped with the day tour. Special units also were assigned to transit facilities. Washington, D.C., Metro police conducted random inspections of stations and rail yards. Atlanta’s public transit system said its police department was increasing the number of officers and patrols in the system. In London and Madrid, two cities hit by terrorist attacks, officials said there were no immediate plans to tighten security.

The Obama administration on Monday announced $600 million in financial support for five more states with high unemployment that have been slammed by the housing bust. Earthquake to Hit California at Fault

Worried about earthquakes? Ready for the next one to strike? If you live in California…be prepared. The “big one” is finally upon us. After multiple earthquakes across the globe, which caused immense devastation throughout Haiti and Chile, researchers at the University of California reevaluated their prediction of “the big one.” Considered to be the earthquake that would “destroy most of the western coast,” the initial projection made nearly ten years ago predicted a tremor to fall across the San Andreas Fault. The fault, which runs 810 miles through California, is the tectonic boundary between the Pacific and North American plate. Divided into three segments, the San Andreas Fault runs through a majority of major cities. The San Francisco peninsula and the San Francisco Bay Area sit directly
on the northern segment, best known for causing the 1906 earthquake that rumbled through the majority of California. With a rate of slippage of approximately 33 mm per year, the fault is slowly moving, with plate shifting causing increasing worry for researchers. Since 2005, researches at the University of California have warned the California area of “the big one”, which would occur across the entire fault and cause rumblings larger than 7.0 on the Richter scale to stretch across the entire western coast. Focused along the fault line, “the big one” would cause extensive damage to Palm Springs and other densely populated California cities including Los Angeles, San Diego, and Baja California. Some rumblings and additional damage could reach as far as Oregon and Mexico. Why now? Researchers, who have predicted the coming of “the big one” for the past 10 years, say the increased earth-
quake activity across the world will probably cause additional aftershocks through earth’s volcanic rock. “One earthquake is never the answer,” spoke one professional, “Once an earthquake the size of Haiti’s occurs, it is nearly a matter of time before other fault lines start to move.” Unlike Haiti, there is a good chance the people and government of California could prepare ahead of time for “the big one”. Since its discovery in 1895, extensive work has been done throughout the region to support buildings, roads, and bridges surrounding the San Andreas Fault. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger assured the people of California on Friday, “We will be prepared for the earthquake. News reports that a man entered an IGA store Friday night, wearing nothing but a face mask, and ran around the aisles. A police report says officers found the suspect in the bathroom of a nearby Hardee's restaurant. Employees say he entered the fast food outlet wearing nothing but an orange
hooded sweat shirt and asked if anyone could lend him clothes. An employee gave him a pair of athletic shorts. Kingsport police arrested 22-year-old Daniel R. Lee of Church Hill and have charged him with indecent exposure.

Blizzard Entertainment Files for Bankruptcy
Do you play online computer games? Are you a fan of instances, raiding, and character selection? Or are you a fan of the South Korean pro scene? These, and many other classic games, may be no more after a recent announcement from Blizzard Entertainment. In a surprise turn of events, Blizzard Entertainment has announced a file for bankruptcy. The multi-million dollar gaming industry, known best for popular games such as “Starcraft” and the mass multiplayer online platform “World of Warcraft” has announced a sudden monetary decrease in sales and a need to close their doors. The announcement comes as a surprise for many gaming fans as Blizzard was due to release multiple expansions and continuations of games throughout the next few years. Blizzard’s bankruptcy announcement is due, in part, to the mass popularity of MMORPG’s online. With the creation of “Star Wars Online” and “Warhammer 40K” it seems
as if the age of Blizzard dominancy in gaming is far behind us. Subscriptions for paid games have dropped significantly since the economy fail and sales of non-subscription games have fallen to the wayside. Although still in beta testing, “StarCraft 2” is scheduled to be released shortly. The fate of the “Diablo III” release, the third installment of the popular “Diablo” franchise, is still up for debate. Blizzard Entertainment representatives have limited discussion on the recent announcement, with more press conferences expected in the next few weeks. Many in the gaming industry fear the fall of Blizzard Entertainment will only be the start of a decline of big business in the gaming industry. Nintendo and Sony representatives have started to look over their business strategies in order to compromise for the drop in Blizzard sales. So what does this mean for Blizzard Entertainment fans? What does the bankruptcy announcements mean for the future of the “World of Warcraft” online community, which spans the globe and includes nearly 12 million subscribers? Blizzard En-
tertainment has released no information, but it is expected that the highly anticipated Cataclysm expansion will still drop in November. The extent of its content, which is meant to include two new races, multiple new worlds, and a complete overhaul of old zones, is still unknown. Rumors circulating the web suggest that the massive rift in Azeroth, meant to occur at the beginning of the expansion, will instead occur after multiple hours of game play, allowing for a conclusion to the series. Whether that game play finale will include a final summation to the popular story about the Lich King is yet to be seen. The game itself will most likely close its doors entirely at the end of 2011 when bankruptcy discussions come to a final close. The future of gaming is up in arms over this decision, as one of the most well-known computer platform gaming industries sets to close its doors. PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – Police say they charged a Pennsylvania man with public drunkenness after he was seen trying to resuscitate a long-dead opossum along a highway. State police Trooper Jamie Levier says several witnesses saw 55-year-old Donald Wolfe,
of Brookville, near the animal Thursday along Route 36 in Oliver Township, about 65 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The trooper says one person saw Wolfe kneeling before the animal and gesturing as though he were conducting a seance.
He says another saw Wolfe attempting to give mouthto-mouth resuscitation. Levier says the animal already had been dead a while. The Associated Press could not locate a home telephone number for Wolfe.

Rain, rain, rain, and guess what? Oh you don’t know? MORE RAIN. I’m tired of this. First, it’s really good weather and then it’s really bad. Will you make up your freakin’ mind mother nature? I don’t know about everyone else, but as the year wears on it seems as if there are more and more lab reports to do…and I personally do not like lab reports. Because let’s be honest: they are long and they are boring and you don’t really pay much attention to them! But professors are always so picky about what they want in their reports. =(

Remember there are many defenses against alien incursions that you can implement in your own home and work. There are a few steps one can use to deter aliens: 1. It is useful to get very annoyed about the violation of one’s rights. Shouting “leave me alone” or “go away” may also help. 2. Tin foil hats are a classic and are a favorite (as I have heard from reputable sources) of President Kaplan. 3. Some herbs and unguents have been known to repel aliens (teargas has been known to be very effective). 4. Last, but not least, and my personal favorite – a double barreled shotgun has been proven to be most effective out of any and all personal defense means.

HOLLYWOOD ... Makes me happy -- the crowds pouring in to see Alice In Wonderland. When I was young, I read and reread the book until the pages were all shredded. So, it’s good to see that this generation of young moviegoers isn’t totally computeroriented. Again, it’s great to know there is a wonderment! Aside to Barbara H. of Pensacola, Fla.: I can’t speak for Angelina as to why she doesn’t trot around to talk and interview shows. However, I can surmise she doesn’t need to. Her popularity at the box office is assured, and as far as I know, she has a great home life with a loving husband and all those kids. So, I would say her career is not her numero uno priority. B e t t y White is one remarkable lady! At a rather advanced age, she just goes on and on, both in real life and “up there” on the big screen and the little one. Come May she will host Saturday Night Live, and her comedy pilot, Hot In Cleveland, has been picked up for a summer run by TV Land. With all this going on, she still manages animal-rights organizations and sees that no “critter” goes unfed. Harking back to the Voight family, Jon has been cast in the pilot film Midland. Interesting plot: A con artist in two Texas cities with two women, one the daughter of a Texas legend (Voight). My only brush with Mr. Voight was back several years when actress Hermione Baddely’s funeral was held at a Beverly Hills church. Voight appeared wearing the perennial white scarf and asked if he could speak. He gave a long talk about a person he didn’t know, but he DID know her talent, and paid respect to that. And there’s no doubting HIS acting ability. He is one of the best. Aside to Hubert W. of Pineville, La. Yes, stars are still putting their hand and footprints in the forecourt of Grauman’s Chinese Theater on Hollywood Boulevard. That’s free. When they get their star on the Hollywood Boulevard Walk of Fame, that costs around $3,000. It’s a whole new Kirstie Alley. She’s still big in a thin way, because she’s a big woman. But there’s a fresh face there (a nip and tuck, maybe?) and long, heavy, beautiful blond hair. Now we’ll wait and see how her reality show fares. Many times I have been behind her walking a grocery aisle, and it’s like a canoe behind an ocean liner. To those of you who have asked: Yes, that lovely, thin and graceful Monica Seles who has been Dancing With the Stars is the same Monica Seles who as tennis champ was rather chunky and clumsy. I don’t know how, but she did it. BITS ‘N’ PIECES: Way back when Dustin Hoffman was filming Little Big Man, he accidentally shot himself in the leg when he tried to pull his gun from the holster. ... AND John Garfield accidentally knocked himself out when filming a scene for Body and Soul. ... Where’s Julia, you ask. Capt. Phil died on Feb. 9 after suffering a stroke two weeks earlier while unloading crab from his boat, the Cornelia Marie, at Saint Paul Island, Alaska. He was 53. His death won’t be dealt with until episodes 12 and 13. According to Phil Segal, president of the production company that produces Deadliest Catch for the Discovery Channel: “He was fishing all the way up to the end. We’re so concerned about the family and the crew right now that we haven’t stopped to think about how we’re going to deal with this. March Madness Brings Unusual Terms to Spotlight By ERIN ENNIS

The 2010 March Madness Final Four is unusual at best. Michigan State, West Virginia, Butler, and Duke will come together this week in one of the last stages of the NCAA divisional games. Expected to bring in tons of fans and an unusually high at-home viewing audience, this year’s Final Four is sure to
be exciting. Butler, a small school of approximately 4,500, best known for playing in the same gym that the movie Hoosiers was filmed, will take on Michigan State Saturday. While Butler has never been to the Final Four match up, Michigan State has traveled to the big game a total of six times, with this trip being the most unexpected. Both Butler and Michigan State are fifth seed teams,
an unprecedented event in March Madness. While, for some, this suggests a reseeding of the brackets, for many this is just a case of underdogs triumphing. Networks are using the game to push the idea of teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship in the NCAA. West Virginia, which is making its first debut in the Final Four playoffs since 1959 will face Duke University, a long time favor-

Scouts have been seen looking at some of the year’s most popular quarterback candidacies (including Tim Tebow) and negotiations with heralded quarterback Brett Favre have already begun. What does this announcement, one that has been shrouded in mystery and obscurity, mean for New England Patri-
ots’ fans? Expect Tom Brady to be on the roster for 2010, but with limited playing time and multiple rotations. Draft day will probably bring around a new quarterback prospect or a longer, more direct contract will be created for the current back up. Favre may make his first appearance in the blue and white, or expect another high-ranked quarterback to show up in New England (Jake Delhomme). While Brady is expected to last most of the 2010 season, mainly due to contract restrictions, it is also expected that tensions between the quarterback and head coach Bill Belichick will be visible and intense. Brady’s move from the New England Patriots won’t be official until right before the 2011 season, but expect an announcement early in 2010. ORLANDO, Fla. – Ernie Els made two clutch par putts, escaped trouble from a buried lie in the bunker, and wound up wearing a blue blazer Monday for winning the rain-delayed Arnold Palmer Invitational. Suddenly, it's easy to picture him in a different color jacket two weeks from now. Els overcame a few nervous moments with four solid pars to wrap up a 1-under 71 and win by two shots at Bay Hill, giving him back-to-back victories for the first time in seven years and setting himself up as a favorite at Augusta National. "I'd like to put this jacket in some dye," Els said at the trophy presentation. "Some green dye." Coming off a four-shot victory in the World Golf Championship at Doral two weeks ago, Els had to work harder than he should have for his 18th career victory on the PGA Tour. He had a five-shot lead Sunday afternoon with six holes remaining until hitting into the water on No. 13 for a double bogey and hitting into the sand on the next hole for a bogey. Then came the thunderstorms, halting the final round until it resumed at noon Monday. Els immediately felt pressure as he stood over a 6-foot par putt, but he made it. With his lead down to one shot over Kevin Na, his 4-iron came up short of the 17th green and plugged into the face of the bunker. Els blasted out to 6 feet and made that one for par. "The whole thing changed from being very comfortable to being just as tense as I've been for a long time," Els said. "So it was a hard struggle today. If I can say it, I really earned this one." He finished at 11-under 277 and moved to No. 7 in the world rankings.

The Chargers defeated the Golden Knights 5-0 in the first game and added a 8-1 win in the second. UNH improves to 14-2 overall and 4-0 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while Saint Rose slips to 3-11 and 1-3 in the league. New Haven wraps up its first NE-10 road trip with a unblemished 4-0 record. KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. – An unusually inconsistent Roger Federer beat Florent Serra 7-6 (2), 7-6 (3) on Monday in the third round of the Sony Ericsson Open. The top-ranked Federer lost serve three times, each time when he led. He committed 35 unforced errors to 32 for Serra. But Federer won eight consecutive service points in the tiebreakers and closed out the victory with a service winner. "All in all, I'm thrilled to be through," he said. "At the end of the day, that's what counts." The crowd included Rafael Nadal, a potential opponent in Sunday's final. "It has always been a lot of fun playing against him," Federer said. "I hope

Yankees would be traded to the Red Sox. In return, the Red Sox would send Victor Martinez, Mike Lowell, and Nick Green to the Yankees. Never in the history of the major leagues has this happened, although it is not surprising that history would be made by these two teams. During an interview with ESPN late last week, Red Sox manager Terry Francona was asked about this possible trade. He responded, “I’m not going to give out details during this time, but I can tell you that it’s been in the works for a while. I don’t want to compromise anything by speaking too soon, but we will have some new boys in red come opening day. Whether our fans support
that…we’ll see I suppose.” When Martinez, Lowell and Green learned about possibly being traded to the Yankees, it came with mixed reviews. None of the players wanted to comment, since the news of the trade was too shocking. On the other side of things, Yankees manager Joe Girardi couldn’t be reached for comment. When Jeter was asked about this trade, he responded, “Well that’s baseball for you. I have nothing against playing for the Red Sox. They are a very competitive and high caliber team and hopefully I can make a difference.” With the recent and official release, fans have begun to respond to the trade notification, taking this news very hard.
Some, while impressed with the caliber of athletes being traded, are unsure about the relationship being established between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. There has been such tense rivalry between these two teams that it’s simply amazing that trade talks are occurring between the two. Other fans are disgusted by the prospect of having the biggest rival players join the ranks of their favorite sports teams. Time will tell if the trade, which will become official later this week, will have a lasting impression on the MLB and the statuses of two of the greatest sports teams of all time. WASHINGTON – Barack Obama will throw out the ceremonial first ball at the Washington Nationals' opener, marking the 100th anniversary of a presidential pitch to start the season. William Howard Taft first did it on April 14, 1910. This will be the 48th time a president has made an opening-day pitch in the nation's capital. The Nationals open at home on April 5 against the Philadelphia Phillies. "I am proud that President Obama will continue the long presidential tradition of throwing out the
first pitch of opening day in Washington, D.C.," baseball commissioner Bud Selig said. Obama will have an experienced target, too: When he played in Texas, new Nationals catcher Ivan Rodriguez, a 14-time All-Star, twice caught ceremonial pitches from President George W. Bush, a former Rangers owner. Rodriguez is looking forward to this occasion. "He's a great guy, a great president, a sports fan," Rodriguez said. "It's going to be a great day." This will be the first time President Obama attends a game at Nationals Park. Pitcher John Lannan will be starting the game

Hollywood “It” Couple Calls it Quits

It is official for all you Brad and Jennifer lovers out there! Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Hollywood’s “It” couple, have finally called it quits after months of speculation. Questions over the fidelity of the lovers was first called into question at the start of awards season, when Brad and Angelina were both conspicuously absent from the Golden Globes and SAGs despite the numerous nominations for Pitt’s movie Inglourious Basterds. Representatives for both actors denied the rumors, although close family friends suggested high tension between the couple. Without much surprise, both Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie missed the famed Oscars ceremony and have been conspicuously absent on the red carpet ever since. Brad Pitt, best known for roles in Fight Club, Se7en, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, was previously married to famous Friends actress Jennifer Aniston before filing for divorce in 2005.
