American Hostage Situation Off Oman Ends Tragically

–––––––––––––––––––––––––– Any hope for the safe return of four American hostages has been tragically lost. The Americans, whose yacht was hijacked in the Arabian Sea Friday night, were held captive by Somali pirates in the midst of their aroundthe-word sailing trip. Three days later, U.S. military personnel boarded the ship in an attempt to rescue the passengers, but unfortunately found that all four hostages had been shot and killed. Despite attempts to revive the victims, their wounds proved fatal. The two couples aboard the yacht were Seattle residents Phyllis Macay, 59, and Robert Riggle, 67, and the yacht’s owners, Jean and Scott Adam of Marina del Rey, California. At the time of the passengers’ deaths, the yacht, named Quest, was sailing just off the coast of Somalia, located on the Horn of Africa. Pirate gangs are not uncommon in this area, and they usually target large merchant ships and oil tankers for profit, reports Reuters.com. A second money-maker to pirates involves the capturing of foreigners to use as ransom, a method that brings
in tens of millions of dollars. The Quest was sailing through the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden, a main shipping route and a gold mine for pirates. The U.S. embassy reported on Saturday that they believed the Quest had been hijacked 240 miles off the coast of Oman. Andrew Mwangura, an East African maritime expert, concluded that the yacht was then sailing

Memories of 1995 Haunt GOP as Shutdown Talk Grows By KIM REILLY STAFF WRITER
–––––––––––––––––––––––––– Remembering back to the 1995-1996 partial shutdown of the federal government, Republicans are more concerned now than ever. Even though this helped Bill Clinton recast his House Reps into partisans and overturned his decreasing riches, the government is curious to know if history will repeat itself, and whether or not these Republicans are the ones to take credit for the fall. With this fatal memory in mind, leaders of the Republican Party look to avoid all of this from happening again and are confident of what the end result may turn into, even if it means yielding the amount of spending cuts they might be willing to reject. Keeping the government’s shutdown in perspective, Senator Tom Coburn informs Fox News that “it’s good for political rhetoric to talk about a government shutdown. But I don’t know anybody that wants that to happen.” He tried to inform his audience of the Republicans’ circumstances, and how willing they are to not
have a shutdown from happening again. On the other hand, according to one Democratic leader, the Senate officials seem to be making more time for the Congress’ President’s Day recess

SCOPE It Out!

Last week was a special week compared to prior SCOPE weeks, because it was Film Week. It was an entire week full of events devoted to films; we had movies, trivia shows with questions about 2010 films, and it all ended with the Oscar Party. The week started off with a couple of movies. On Monday, Film committee showed the movie Burlesque, starring Cher and Christina Aguilera. It was about a neo-burlesque club owned by Cher, a former dancer that was going under. Aguilera’s character comes in and saves the day by becoming the clubs singing star. On Tuesday, Tangled was shown in Bartels. The Disney movie, starring Zachery Levi and Mandy Moore, was about the princess Rapunzel finally getting the chance to leave the tower and discovering that her life has been a lie. Of course, being a Disney movie, everything ends well; Rapunzel and the hero end up together, she goes home to be a princess, and everything ends happily ever after. Wednesday is when the Film Week fun really began. Film had a Movie Trivia Game Show with questions all about 2010 movies. There were questions about famous quotes, DVD covers, and general questions about the movies. Lots of teams signed up and had a blast answering questions, while eating some delicious food. It was a great competition and all the teams did really well, but only the top three teams walked away with fantastic prizes; flat screen TVs, three month subscription to Netflix, and gift cards for the movies. Instead of a night event on Thursday, Film cosponsored with Day Programming and had an event during the day. If you passed by the Programming Space in Bartels, you would have seen people getting their pictures taken, which were then placed in a movie clapper. A lot of people walked away with a great novelty to remember the week. On Friday, we took a trip to the movie theaters, because what would a Film Week be without a Movie Trip. Film cosponsored with Weekend Programming to take students to see the new movie I Am Number Four. It was a fantastic movie involving aliens, both good and bad, girls, love interests, and new friendships. This movie pretty much had everything, including sad moments, funny moments, and of course action scenes. If you haven’t seen this new movie, I am definitely recommending you head to the movie theaters right now. Saturday night, Film had a classic Double Feature of the two films Burlesque and Tangled. The room was packed with students that had missed the showings on Monday or Tuesday, and even with students that wanted to see them again. Finally, to end the week, Film had an Oscar Party. They put the Academy Awards on the big screen in Bartels, served more awesome food, and gave away fantastic prizes like gift cards worth up to a hundred dollars, movies, and an iPad. Students showed up in their best attire, ate some food, and enjoyed the Oscars in style. This week was full of great events and the whole week went really well. Just wait until SCOPE has their yearly Comedy Week and Rock-n-Roll Week, which are coming up. The Six Wives of Henry VIII – Part 2
We left off last week with King Henry VIII, after he beheaded his second wife, Anne Boleyn and was formally betrothed to Jane Seymour. On May 30, 1536, they were married, but unlike the previous two queens, Jane never officially had a coronation. It is said that this time around, the king was waiting to see if his third wife would prove herself by giving him a son. Jane did not become pregnant until early 1537, even though the king pushed for an early pregnancy in the marriage. During the pregnancy, Jane was indulged by the king, because he felt that she was his first “true wife” and that she carried his son. A prince was finally born in October of that year, at Hampton Court Palace and was christened Edward on October 15. Jane attended her son’s christening, although she was weak from child birth. She died on October 24, two weeks after her son was born. Henry had already been preparing his own tomb at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, which is where Jane was buried. She remains the only wife of the six to be buried with him. Henry remained single for over two years after Jane’s death. It is thought that he genuinely mourned for her. However, Henry’s ministers began looking for a bride for their king that would help to secure an alliance to keep England from becoming too vulnerable. Hans Holbein, the most famous Tudor court painter, was sent to the court of the Duke of Cleves, who had two sisters: Amelia and Anne. England wanted an alliance with countries that had thrown off Papal authority. Hence, Henry decided to have a contract drawn up for his marriage to Anne. The marriage took place on January 6, 1540, but by then, Henry was already looking for ways to get out of the marriage. Henry did not find his new bride the least bit attractive, and he called her a horse. He soon became attracted to young Kathryn Howard. Anne was smart enough to know that she should not raise any obstacles to Henry’s attempts to annul the marriage. After the marriage was dissolved, Anne became known as the “King’s Sister” and was given Hever Castle. Kathryn Howard was the first cousin to Anne Boleyn, but had been brought up in the household of the Dowager Duchess of Norfolk. She came to court at the age of 19 as a lady in waiting to Anne of Cleves, but she caught Henry’s attentions. Sixteen days after he was free of Anne, Henry took his fifth wife on July 28, 1540. He was 49, and Kathryn was only 19. The vivacious young girl brought back some of Henry’s zest for life, after he had gained a lot of weight and was dealing with an ulcerated leg. However, less than a year into the marriage, rumors of the queen’s infidelity began. By November 1541, there was enough evidence to show the king that she had been promiscuous before her marriage and may have had liaisons after becoming Henry’s wife. She was executed on the Tower Green on February 13, 1542. Katherine Parr was Henry VIII’s sixth and final wife. She had been previously married to Edward Borough when she was 17 years old, but he died a few years later. She remarried John Neville, when she was 22 and he was 41. However, she became a widow in March 1543, at the age of 31. It was around this time that she caught the attention of the king. The king requested her hand, a request Katherine felt it was her duty to accept. They were married on July 12 at Hampton Court in a small ceremony. Katherine was close with all three of her stepchildren as Henry’s wife and was personally involved in the educational program of the younger two, Elizabeth and Edward. Henry VIII died in January 1547, leaving behind his sixth wife and three legitimate children. Edward VI became king. After his death, Henry’s first daughter, Mary I, became queen. Lastly, after Mary’s death, Elizabeth became Elizabeth I and ruled for the longest time of all three. And so we conclude my two part series about my favorite time in history. Like I said, there is so much more to this time period, but I tried to focus on the most interesting part. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

A Look at Irish Fare
The mere mention of St. Patrick’s Day is enough to make the typical American’s mouth water. After all, who doesn’t love a big heaping plate of corned beef and cabbage washed down with a pint of Guiness or Smithwicks? The Origins The truth is, corned beef and cabbage, as we know it, did not technically originate in Ireland. In the early 1800s, when Irish immigrants were pouring into America, they could not readily find the type of cured pork that they normally ate back home. Because the Jewish style corned beef was similar in taste and texture to their Irish bacon, many immigrants began incorporating the meat into their native dishes. The Nutrition Although satisfying to our taste buds, corned beef and cabbage as it is commonly prepared in America is not very nutritious. A five-ounce serving of the cured beef and its accompanying juices often contains over 1,000 mg of sodium. In addition, 40 percent of the calories from corned beef come from fat… and not the good kind either! The beef is one of the few foods that naturally contains trans fats. However, a five-ounce serving of corned beef does contain beneficial iron and protein. Cabbage, on the other hand, is very nutritious! One cup of cooked cabbage is just 35 calories and contains no fat or cholesterol! The same serving provides you with four grams of fiber, three grams of protein, and 41 percent of your daily intake of Vitamin C. Added Bonus The trusty Irish staple often served next to the corned beef is the largely misunderstood potato. Spuds have gotten a bad reputation since the advent of low-carb diets, but they actually contain many helpful vitamins and minerals. A large potato contains 48 percent of your daily Vitamin C, 18 percent of your daily iron, and 46 percent of your daily potassium. In addition, for 275 calories, one potato can provide you with 7 g of fiber and 7 g of protein.

Egyptians Celebrate, Pressure Army to Keep Promises

After 18 days of protesting, millions of people took to the streets in Egypt to celebrate the new Egypt last Friday. Instead of just celebrating their victory over Mubarak, the people also wanted to remind the military to keep their promise of a quick transition to democracy. Yet the day was not all celebration – it was also a memorial to the 365 people who died during the uprising. People carried signs that said, “You are Egyptian – raise your head high” showing an outpour of national pride. Where the country goes next and the implications of the uprising are still up for question. One man, who traveled to Cairo from Port Said, said about the revolution, “After today, it will be more than obvious to them that if they don’t protect the revolution and respond to the people’s demands,

the next time people go down to Tahrir won’t be to celebrate victory, but they will bring their blankets with them like before.” This statement shows an overall feeling in the Middle East. They want change, and if promises are not kept, they will go back to protesting again. The cabinet that they have in place is still largely that of Mubarak, and the citizens are expecting to have a reshuffle in the next few days. The people see these people as linked to corruption, greed, and violence, and they do not want them to be a part of their government any longer. Security officers said that the Prime Minister would announce the ministers making up the emergency government next week and hope that it will help appease protestors and workers on strike. As for who will run the government, it is not sure, but a group called The Muslim Brotherhood, is in the lead. They are seen as
the only organized block in Egypt, and warned of the needs to protect gains. They believe that they can win up to 30 percent of the votes. They are dedicated to democracy, and may be exactly what Egypt needs. It is also important to note that not everyone was celebrating last week. While the masses were happy that Mubarak was out of power, 5,000 people gathered in another part of Cairo, chanting slogans of apology to him, saying they support the revolution but not the treatment of Mubarak. These proMubarak supporters were encircled by troops for their protection. As times of uncertainty come to Egypt, the people are still happy that they can live their lives more peacefully than before. It does not matter to them that they do not know where they will be six months down the road, but most of citizens of Egypt are happy about the changes.

She and the e-board of BSU had to be accommodating for each group or person in a show to make sure everything ran smoothly for the event. BSU President, Erica Baganza, said that during Black History Month the requirements for being president change on a daily basis. She oversees the events, by making sure that a lot of details are taken care of. Baganza has to make sure to get certain forms in, make sure performers have rides to the shows they are performing for, make sure students know about the events happening, and post fliers around campus. Baganza also commented on some of the events that have already passed. She said motivational speaker Ray Baker was a memorable event for her because he spoke about how African-Americans should embrace their African roots and own them. When asked which event she felt was the most successful, there wasn’t a particular event. “Any event is successful,” Baganza said, “Even if I get five
people that show up, that’s successful to me.” Students on the UNH campus are not the only ones excited about some of the events BSU has planned. The e-board members are excited for them as well. Both, Christian and Baganza are excited about the upcoming pageant “Mr and Ms. Black History Month.” Contestants are competing to win the titles by displaying their knowledge of a prominent AfricanAmerican figure they have picked. “I’m excited to see how it is going to turn out,” Baganza said. “Just because it’s new, I’m anxious.” BSU was the first establish minority club at UNH. Students are encouraged to join because the club is not only targeted towards African-American students. Contrary to what most believe, BSU is trying their best to have more of a diverse group of members. They want more students of any race to be educated on the culture of AfricanAmericans. BSU thinks that it is very important that students know about the ancestry of African- Americans, especially because through their accomplish-
ments, students can take pride and fulfill their own goals in the present and future. Christian said, “We try our best to show people how important it is to know their history through BSU’s educational programs.” Baganza said she wants BSU to embrace not only African-American culture, but many other cultures as well. She also wants BSU to form a bond with other minority groups on campus, and maintain it in the future. BSU has done a lot to bring successful events to the UNH campus and through the collaborative effort of the e-board members, they have done just that. “We pull it together very well,” Baganza said, “In the end result, I can look back in the month of February and say I am proud of my e-board to see what we have accomplished thus far.” There will be more events listed for the month as Black History Month comes to a close. WASHINGTON – A tax cut that began last month gave consumers the biggest jump in their incomes in nearly two years. But Americans boosted their spending only slightly, a sign that many people are being cautious with their money even as the economy improves. Consumers increased spending 0.2 percent in January, the smallest gain since June, the Commerce Department reported Monday. Personal incomes jumped 1 percent, reflecting the 2 percentage point reduction from the Social Security tax cut. The small spending gain pushed total spending last month to an annual rate of $10.59 trillion, up 7.4 percent from the recession low hit in December 2008. Some economists said that poor weather may have played a role in slowing spending growth last

BSU Vice President, Shniqua Christian, said coming up with events for Black History Month was a collaborative effort from the e-board and feedback from the club members. The e-board is made up of the president, vice president, treasurer, secretary, and sergeant at arms. Club members suggested events that could happen in February, and from the suggestions, Christian and the other e-board members decided which to plan. Christian explained that as vice president of BSU, Black History Month was hectic, because she was in charge of planning all the events for the month. “Black History Month, as a vice president, that’s my baby, that’s my month. The trade group said its index of sales agreements for previously occupied homes fell 2.8 percent last month to a reading of 89.9. That’s higher than the 75.9 reading from June, the low point since the housing bust. But it’s below 100, which is considered a healthy level. The last time it reached that point was in April, the final month people could qualify for a home-buying tax credit. Consumer spending was growing at the fastest pace in four years in the final three months of 2010, helping to support the overall economy. But the weak showing in January raised questions about how strong spending will be going forward. The modest 0.2 percent rise in spending was even weaker when inflation was taken into account. After adjusting for price changes — particularly a steep rise in energy costs — spending actually dipped 0.1 percent in January. That was the poorest showing since inflation-adjusted spending had fallen 0.8 percent in September 2009. “Overall we expect consumption to be fairly strong in the first half of the year. But the way things are going at the moment, all the payroll tax cut will do is offset the rise in gasoline and food prices, rather than provide a boost to real spending,” said Paul Dales, senior economist at Capital Economics. The latest survey by the National Association for Business Economics released Monday predicted consumer spending will rise 3.2 percent this year, up significantly from the
actual spending gain of 1.8 percent in 2010. The Social Security tax cut will give the typical family an extra $1,000 to spend this year. But the recent surge in gasoline prices has raised worries that consumers may need to spend the extra money on fuel, and not new goods and services. For January, consumers boosted spending on durable goods, items like new cars, and on nondurable goods such as food and gasoline. But they trimmed spending on services. The 1 percent rise in incomes in January would have been a much more modest 0.1 percent gain if the effects of the tax changes had been excluded. The rise in incomes and small increase in spending meant that the personal savings rate rose in January. Households saved 5.8 percent of their after-tax incomes, up from 5.4 percent in December. For all of 2010, the savings rate was 5.8 percent. That’s down slightly from 5.9 percent in 2009. But it is well above the 2.1 percent savings rate in 2007, when Americans were spending freely as the value of their homes surged to record levels. Since the housing bust and steep recession, Americans have been more cautious. The savings rate has more than doubled from the 2007 level. The effort to increase savings has acted as a drag on consumer spending. But economists say it should result in stronger spending in the future after consumers pay down debt and boost their savings enough to feel more secure. Economists closely watch consumer spending because it accounts for 70 percent of economic activity. In the final three months of 2010, the overall economy grew at an annual rate of 2.8 percent, the government reported Friday.

Libya Quashes Protest in Tripoli; West to Aid East

TRIPOLI, Libya – The West moved to send its first concrete aid to Libya’s rebellion in the east of the country, hoping to give it the momentum to oust the Libyan leader. But the Libyan leader’s regime clamped down in its stronghold in the capital, quashing an attempt Monday to hold new protests as residents reported skyrocketing food prices from the crisis. The two sides in Libya’s crisis appeared entrenched in their positions, and the direction the uprising takes next could depend on which can hold out longest. Gadhafi’s opponents, including mutinous army units, hold nearly the entire eastern half of the country, much of the oil infrastructure and some cities in the West. Gadhafi is dug in in Tripoli and nearby cities, backed by security forces and militiamen who are generally better armed than the military. In the two oppositionheld cities closest to Tripoli — Zawiya and Misrata — rebel forces were locked into standoffs with Gadhafi loyalists.

As Congress had failed to support the government for a full fiscal year, agencies relied on a group of “continuing resolutions”
to keep them in business, while lawmakers were being disputed. As a result, Democratic and Republican lawmakers agree on one thing: that it is almost expected for the president to turn away from a shutdown and prevent all of this from happening again. Obama chose to even avoid talking about a shutdown at his news conference last week. With all of this being mentioned, President Obama assured his viewers that this must be tamed. He said “let’s use a scalpel. Let’s not use a machete. And if we do that, there should be no reason at all for a government shutdown.”

Graham McNamara’s “Units” series dissects and deconstructs classical paintings by reducing their pallets to one color, altering the original image significantly, and allowing single aspects of the image to be emphasized. McNamara also corrodes the surface and reproduces them, begging the question: “who or what is responsible for maintaining the canon of art?” Amy Youngs’ work demonstrates the distortion of an image caused by technology. Her ongoing series “Artifacts from the Screening of the World” portray a series of webcam screenshots, each altered somehow, either by glitches, blurring, or internal reflections. Youngs concerns herself with the phenomena of life being partially removed from reality by technological means. Frank Zadlo uses films
from the 70s and 80s as material for his work, including Superman (1978), Predator (1987), and Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). As one example, in his work “Supertitles,” Zadlo removed the names from the opening sequence of Superman, leaving only the blue light trails in the background. Christina Vassallo, the curator, is based in Brooklyn New York and founded curatorial platform Random Number, which specializes in promoting emerging artists. Her work has been reviewed in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, and she currently serves as the Adjunct Curator at the New York based art center Flux Factory and has previously served as the associate directors of the Kinz + Tillou, Richard L. Feigen, and ART&IDEA galleries. Lastly, Vassallo holds a B.A. in art history and a M.A. in visual arts management, both from New York University. A reception for the exhibit was held on Thursday, February 24 from 5:007:00 p.m. in the Seton Art Gallery, where a few of the artists came to speak about their works. The exhibit itself opened Tuesday, February 22 and will close Friday, March 25. The Seton Art Gallery is open Tuesday through Thursday 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m., except during Spring Break from Saturday March 12 to Saturday March 19, where the gallery will be open by appointment only.

Paying for college can sometimes be a hassle, but don’t let that stop you from achieving your educational goals. There are many ways in which you can receive financial help to pay for school, one of the most important being outside scholarships. Outside scholarships are different from those given out by the University. They are provided by outside organizations such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church organizations, community organizations and more. These scholarships give the extra financial assistance you may need when paying your bill, and there are so many different outside scholarships available for many different kinds of students. This month’s theme is about searching for outside scholarships, and the Financial Aid Office is here to teach you how to search for scholarships, and even to provide you with some outside scholarships that we have already found. Searching for outside scholarships can be difficult if you don’t know where to look. The most common question people ask when looking for outside scholarships is, “is this a legitimate scholarship?” There are websites out there that may try to trick you into paying in order to apply. If any scholarship asks you to pay, it is not a legitimate site and you should get off of the website immediately. According to the FTC (Federal Trade Commission), perpetrators of financial aid fraud often use the following telltale lines: • The scholarship is guaranteed or your money back • You can’t get this information anywhere else • I just need your credit card or bank account number to hold this scholarship • We’ll do all the work • The scholarship will cost some money • You’ve been selected by a “national foundation to receive a scholarship” or “You’re a finalist”; in a contest you never entered If you happen to come across a website with any of the above lines or something similar, it is most likely a fraudulent website and you should avoid it and exit the browser immediately. A good way to begin your search is by checking well known educational sites like www.collegeboard.com. Most students know Collegeboard is a real organization because they may have used it to help search for colleges when applying as a senior in high school or when taking the SAT’s/ACT’s. Some other websites that provide good outside scholarship opportunities are www.ecampustours.com, www.fastweb.com, www.collegeanswer.com, www.brokescholar.com, and www.petersons.com/finaid. The first step for most of the websites above is to create a log in name and profile. This will allow you to save potential scholarships you find to a favorites section of your profile, and you can also customize your profile so that the website can match you with scholarships that fit your needs. For example, if you’re an engineering major, and you create a profile based on that, the website will be able to match you up with scholarships related to your major. The same applies for business majors, criminal justice majors and so on. This process is easy and quick, especially since once created the profiles are doing all the searching for you and sending it to your e-mail address. All you have to do is sit back, relax and let the outside scholarship matches come to you! Not only can you search for outside scholarships on your own, but if you are having difficulty finding them, then the Financial Aid Office can help! Recently, the financial aid student workers have spent a lot of time researching outside scholarships that can help any UNH student pay for college. We have created a binder full of outside scholarship information and applications, so that anyone can easily access them. A new video game set in the city of Ciudad Juarez has angered local officials due to the suggestion of excessive violence and gunfights involving drug cartels. As a result, they want the Mexican Congress to ban the videogame from the shelves. While videogames are praised as a form of virtual art, is a game that’s based on real events going too far? The game, Call of Juarez: The Cartel, is a third person shooter game which occurs in modern day Mexico. The game is developed by Ubisoft and is planned for release in the summer of 2011. The concept of the game is based on the drug cartels in Mexico and the excessive violence that surrounds it. The idea of the game is to take the law into your own hands. Screenshots of the game have been released which show guns being used in the open streets of Juarez. Without being asked

for permission, city officials are deeply offended due the realistic nature of the game. Ricardo Boone Salmon, one of the congressmen for Chihuahua State, claims that legislature has unanimously approved a request to ask the federal Interior Department to ban the game from the shelves. "It is true there is a serious crime situation, which we are not trying to hide," Boone Salmon said. "But we also should not expose children to this kind of scenarios so that they are going to grow up with this kind of image and lack of values." The game is still scheduled for release everywhere else, but it’s uncertain if Mexican Congress will ban the game or not. Regardless, the request for the ban has created quite a stir at an international level. There hasn’t been much videogame controversy since the “Hot Coffee” incident with Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. “Hot Coffee” was a hidden mission that could be unlocked with cheats. The
mission required you to sleep with someone and provide thrusting motions using the joystick. The end result was that the game rating was changed from M (mature 17+), to AO (adults only 18+). There were also quite a few lawsuits blaming the game for their child’s violence. Since then, the sale of violent videogames to minors has become a lot stricter due to the lawsuits surrounding the liability. It’s important to note that this isn’t the first violent videogame that happens to be based on real events. Tons of war games have been created which attempt to recreate the epic battles fought by soldiers on either side of the war. Actual names have been used too in order to provide the games with a much more realistic vibe, along with using the actual names of real battles. The Grand Theft Auto IV is an excessively violent videogame based on the city New York. Games will attempt to create an environment that’s believable to the player. If the environment is unrealistic
or poorly done, it could be difficult to draw gamers into the storyline. That being said, is this really a big deal? If you don’t like the game, don’t buy it. The game doesn’t appear to be offensive to anybody else other than city officials. However, the city officials of Ciudad Juarez are angry for different reasons. The subject appears to be a very sensitive one for the community. After all, the city of Juarez is one of the most violent places in the world with over 6,000 deaths from 2009-2010. The drug cartel violence has escalated significantly in the twenty-first century and has become more real than ever for the community. “Duck and Cover” is what the children are taught to do if there’s ever a firefight nearby. A videogame such as this will simply lead to delusion and disrupt a child’s perception of their city. If they perceive the violence as real as the videogame suggests, it could severely damage their growth and motivation. Ubisoft has a few op-
tions regarding how they can handle this. Their public relations department has probably covered many options, but a game talked about being banned is great press. The game itself is getting more attention as being controversial than whether or not it’s even a good game. A very recent event similar to this occurred with Danger Close’s Medal of Honor released in 2010. The game at first used the name Taliban to label their enemies. Therefore, players on the Taliban could kill American soldiers. Tons of controversy erupted because of this, and the game was banned from being sold on all American Military bases. In an attempt to appease the public and particularly the military, the developers changed the name from Taliban to Opposing Force. Could Ubisoft do something similar? Maybe they should just simply change the name of the city to something else. If that’s the case, it’s possible that the local officials may not be as offended. However,
it’s not the name which has created quite a controversy: it’s the violence involving the drug cartels. Local officials are probably not going to be satisfied unless this game is removed completely. Nobody is completely sure as to whether the game will be banned or not. But regardless, the game is still scheduled for its summer release. It’s unlikely that Ubisoft will ban the game simply because of all the money and production gone into it. When a game is only a few months away from being released, there have been years of development involved. The game is scheduled for its release in the summer of 2011, meaning it’s only a few months away from release. In last week’s issue of The Charger Bulletin, “The Charger Battery” included a mention of a change in the rules about meal plans. At the time, it was from a reputable source, but now it has been officially announced; there will be changes to meal plans and additionally, to some parts of the room selection process. Starting with the meal plan changes, I know some people won’t be happy, but if you are living in Soundview Hall or Forest Hills next year, unlike this year, you will be required to get a meal plan. However, the one exception to this rule is for anyone who did not have a meal plan for fall semester 2010. If you did not have a meal plan this past fall, you will be

This past week I had the opportunity to attend the American Academy of Forensic Science (AAFS) annual conference in Chicago, Illinois. I attended the conference last year in Seattle, Washington as a sophomore, and I wanted to be able to attend again if I was chosen, because the experience is something any student would hope for. Being able to attend a conference such as this one is truly an amazing opportunity for students, especially because it is a great time to network, expand your knowledge, and explore a new city. Just being able to leave campus for a little less than a week was a much needed break, especially because I was able to hop on a plane and fly to a different state. I had never been to Chicago, so it was something I was looking forward to
“grandfathered in” and will not be required to purchase a meal plan. The reasoning behind this change is that for a school the size of UNH, we have a lot of options for on campus food. We can enjoy the food at the dining hall in Bartels, food of the flatbread variety from Sandellas, burgers and the like from Grill 155, pizza and pasta from Pandini’s, and coffee house favorites at the two Jazzmans locations. On top of all that, we have the C-store for some of the little necessities. At last Thursday’s USGA meeting, Nicole McGrath from ORL explained that in order to keep/improve the quality of food and life here

The change to the housing selection process is relatively simple, so hopefully everyone makes it through without a hitch! First, every student participating in room selection will only receive one lottery number, unlike last year where some students were confused by multiple
lottery numbers. Next, all room selection will be online since students also gave feedback that filling out forms to apply for Soundview Hall was tricky combined with the other room selection options being online. Everyone is supposed to receive their room selection numbers this week, so keep an eye out for that email. Following that, the selection process begins the week of March 7th, so make sure you have your roommates picked out by then! If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to visit the Office of Residential Life in Bixler Hall; they are happy to help! Good luck with room selection and have a great week. experiencing. Chicago is a beautiful city, similar to New York, except that it is cleaner, less busy, and not as crowded. Of course it was windy, (“windy city”) but I did enjoy the Willis Tower (formally the Sears Tower) and deep dish pizza. I just enjoy being in a big city, especially where I can sightsee at night. I’m not ashamed to say that I go into full tourist mode, pointing at things and taking hundreds of pictures. I would greatly encourage students to see if their respective majors have national conferences. Being able to attend a conference is an extremely rewarding experience. The AAFS conference was a gigantic conference full of professionals in all fields of forensic science, which
could only mean one thing: networking! If there
day’s day and age, everyone needs contacts to gain employment. If you can get them, take them. Additionally, not only is a conference such as AAFS a good place to meet people in the same field you would like to enter in the future, it also a good place to expand your knowledge in various field of forensic science that you may not have learned about or may have improved since you learned about them in class. Technology changes every day, with new techniques, procedures, and equipment being developed quickly. Especially in a field such as forensic science, it is important to stay on top of all of the new developments. Attending these conferences places you in a front seat to learn about the new research in development or just listen to cases that professionals have had that may have thrown them for a loop in the previous year or two. Many of them are really interesting, especially if
you love strange cases like I do. If you, as a student, can learn something at a conference and then be able to bring it back to one of your classes, fellow students, and teachers, then I’d say you gained something valuable. A goal of mine would be to one day present some of my future research at an AAFS conference, especially since I was inspired by some of the research I was presented with this year. It’s a goal I can try to achieve in the future, especially because there are a lot of students who present some of their research as aspiring forensic scientists. I look forward to attending the conference next year, next time in Georgia. It is a worthwhile experience and I would encourage all forensic science students to apply to attend.

I was able to attend a job fair, poster sessions, a vendor fair, and presentations, all of which allowed me to meet people of different organizations. I know that many of the students were able to make contacts for internships they would like to apply for and many of the seniors were given information about graduate schools and even jobs. A nice way to finish off Engineering Week was the Engineering Olympics, sponsored by the IEE and co-sponsored by NSBE. It was a harrowing contest of skill, speed, and engineering acuity. The competitions were fierce: from egg drops to free standing spaghetti marshmallow structures. In the end only one team could triumph. Coincidentally, it turned out to be the same team that’s won the past two years in a row. What did they win? They won new Acer computers. Congrats everyone! The Freakum Dress Party went of without a hitch (surprisingly). Good music was to be had (relatively), and a good time by everyone (moderately).

So growing up, I was taught that honesty is the best policy, and, to be frank, I still stick to that philosophy today, something I think Sodexo should think about doing. If you are appointed into a position or decide to do something with someone and there are certain tasks involved, let each person do their own job. I am really tired of people always micromanaging things all the time. I know you may think that you know best or that you can do it better, but that’s not the point. The point is that it’s their job and their responsibility. Let each person sink or swim on their own.

Now, for all of you who don’t know, I am an USGA senator. At this past meeting, the district manager of Sodexo graced us with his presence and informed us that everyone will be required to have a meal plan next year, whether you have a kitchen or not. That’s not the part that bothers me though. It’s the fact that they had the gall to say that the reasoning behind this was to “foster a community environment,” because the eating facilities are hubs of social interaction. Sodexo I call shenanigans. You’re doing it because it will make you more money. I would appreciate it if you would tell us that instead.

Edible Opinions Eating Right & Eating Enough

Eating healthy and keeping fit in college are both kind of cliché and overdone topics, but rightfully so. Since there are so many different food venues on campus, it can be somewhat difficult to pick out the healthiest option at times. Let’s face it, college students are extremely busy and want immediate gratification; healthy eating just doesn’t fall into this category. Finding the right eating habits is actually really easy, but we all need to be reminded every once in a while. Your best bet is to make your own food, but sometimes that just isn’t possible (obviously you cannot cook if you live in a freshman building). The University of New Haven has been working with Sodexo for quite some time now, and it is like pulling teeth to get information. It wasn’t until recently that students could find nutritional information, and, let’s be honest, we’d be extremely lucky if the information provided was even remotely accurate. So, how does a student go about making sure what they are eating is a part of a healthy lifestyle? By looking at it. The easiest way to determine how healthy or unhealthy something is is by looking at it. Greasy food is a dead giveaway. Take chicken, for example; is it battered and fried or is it grilled? Anything that looks shiny or crispy is more than likely the leading cause of a heart attack. Try to go for more of a dry looking food (with soup and milk as an exception), and don’t be afraid of carbs. A lot of people assume that the salad bar is the healthiest option, and, for the most part, they are correct. Don’t allow yourself to be fooled by vegetables. Salads are great because they are full of vitamins, fiber, protein, and crunch; however, that dressing you liberally pour over it is not. Be very conservative with salad dressing and additional toppings like croutons, chicken, egg, olives, and bacon or other meats. Too much of a good thing does exist. Raw vegetables are more nutritious than cooked vegetables, so, like stated above, salad is always a good option. Put down the chips and reach for hummus, yogurt, or a piece of fruit. Snacking is always a threat to someone’s diet and exercise regimen. One may eat healthy for breakfast, lunch, and dinner but then counteract that effort by poor snaking throughout the day. It is important, however, to make sure that the feeling of deprivation never exists. Don’t wait until your starving. If you simply eat when you’re hungry and learn to understand what your body wants (a snack, or is it just thirsty?), you’ll be in control. There are so many different diets that have people counting calories, counting points, eliminating carbohydrates, or adding insane amounts of protein. It is just silly. Eating anything in moderation is okay. And remember – you can have the entire pizza now, but there will be delicious leftovers tomorrow if you don’t!

Exum Garners NE-10 All-Rookie Honors SOUTH EASTON, Mass. - University of New Haven freshman men’s basketball player Justin Exum has been named to the 2010-11 Northeast-10 Conference All-Rookie Team which was announce by the conference on Friday.
Exum helped lead the Chargers this season with 14.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. He chipped in with 2.9 threepointers and 2.7 assists per game in his first season. Exum ranks second in the NE-10 in three-pointers and is the second-ranked freshman in the category in all of NCAA Division II. The Brooklyn, N.Y. native shot 38.1-percent from
long range and 37-percent from the floor. The Chargers concluded the 2010-11 season on Wednesday with a 73-71 victory over Adelphi at Charger Gymnasium. With the win, New Haven finished the season winning five of its last 10 games and with an 8-18 overall record.

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Seniors Brian Parmelee and Gregg Brisbin combined for 19 kills on Friday evening, as the University of New Haven men’s volleyball team earned its first victory of the 2011 campaign with a 3-0 sweep of Albertus Magnus College at Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers defeated the
Falcons by the final scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 25-19. In the first set of the night, the two teams exchanged points until the score reached 12-11 in favor of New Haven. Behind the stellar play of Brian Parmelee, the Chargers rallied off five straight points, taking commanding 17-11 lead that they would never relinquish. Parmelee and Brisbin each collected three kills en route to a 25-16 victory.
UNH hammered nine kills and four errors on 23 total attacks in the game one triumph. The Chargers would not let up in game two, utilizing a quick start to propel them to a 2-0 series lead. UNH jumped out to a 4-0 advantage and rapidly increased the lead to 12-4 after a kill shot from Carlito Atkins. Parmelee and Brisbin paced the attack once again, as the senior duo combined for eight
kills and zero errors on 11 total attacks for a 0.734 hitting percentage. Junior Ryan Earl composed a steady attack with a sethigh nine assists granting the Chargers a 25-13 win. The third and final game of the night featured an evenly matched contest through the early portion of the set. With UNH leading 10-9, the home team proceeded to run off six straight points, taking a 16-9 advantage. The Char-
gers remained poised and cruised to a 25-19 triumph, concluding the three-game sweep. UNH finished with a match-high 12 kills on 27 total attacks and two aces in the victory. Parmelee led the attack with 10 kills and one error on 16 total attempts for a .562 hitting percentage. Donahue each chimed in with three kills. Earl recorded 25 assists to go along with three kills and two aces on the night. With the win, UNH improved to 1-4 on the season. The Falcons remain winless, dropping to 0-10 on the year. The Chargers return to the court on March 2 with a make-up game against Endicott College. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Charger Gymnasium.

Ryder, Bruins Beat Oilers 3-2 to Win 5th Straight

Jamal Crawford had 23 points, including a key 3-pointer with 1:36 left, and the Hawks held off a late rally by the Trail Blazers for a 90-83 victory on Sunday night. The Hawks played just their second game with guard Kirk Hinrich, while the Blazers debuted forward Gerald Wallace. Review: ‘Dead Space 2’
Three years after the first game, “Dead Space 2” reacquaints you with engineer Isaac Clarke — who has apparently lost his mind. Waking up from a drug induced slumber, he finds himself being rescued from his cell in the asylum by a character whose name I never cared to learn as he dies faster than an action movie cop who’s one week from retirement. Players then control Isaac’s straitjacketed body and flee the asylum as its residents turn into horrible monsters and take chase. In “Dead Space,” Isaac was essentially his companions’ slave as they’d send him off to do every little errand while they sat in a cozy control room somewhere. (I never understood why the other members of the repair team weren’t wearing repair suits and wielding laser cutters, as well.) Instead, in “Dead Space 2,” Isaac wants to get off this sinkhole of a space colony before its 1 million-plus population all turn into monsters and start forcibly inserting things into his body. will either be annoyed or thrilled to find that “Dead Space 2” has changed quite a lot of gameplay mechanics while sticking to the core gameplay that initially attracted fans. For starters, the useless map was thrown away and the controls were redone. Reloading and picking up items have their own buttons now, as do Healing and Isaac’s Stasis and Kinesis powers. It’s a little tweak, but it means that players no longer have to frantically fiddle with the controls while trying to both pick up and use a healing item and fight off a horde of monsters. There are a few new weapons to play with, but you most likely will never use them as the game can easily be beaten using only the Plasma Cutter (the default weapon) and the Ripper (the Dead Space version of a chainsaw). The Zero-G areas of the game make a comeback, but rather than jumping from wall to wall, the game actually tries to mimic the effects of a low-gravity environment by letting Isaac zip around through space
using jets built into his suit. The levels are darker, the flashlight is brighter, and most of the annoying mini-games (like the asteroid shooting game from “Dead Space”) are gone.
genre. This isn’t “Silent Hill” in space; it’s a mix of “Hellraiser” and “Aliens.” Monsters will still jump out at you, but at least this time they won’t do it from the other side of the room
While “Dead Space 2” is golden when compared to its predecessor, it’s still the same game in many fundamental and unpleasant ways. “Dead Space” wanted to be a spooky horror title like “System Shock 2” and it failed miserably. “Dead Space 2” though, has come to terms with the fact that it will never be a suspenseful or scary game and has opted instead to go with the action horror/gorefest
and give you two minutes to get ready for the attack. The downside though is that much of the core gameplay mechanics that made up the original make their return in the sequel. “Dead Space 2” sticks with the “Resident Evil” system of forcing tension by artificially restricting weapon usage. Players are limited in their options by a restrictive inventory and ridiculously small item stack sizes for ammuni-
tion. In terms of plot, “Dead Space 2” makes no sense whatsoever. There’s a new Marker that’s apparently causing problems, but then they never actually explain why or how the the monsters actually got aboard the space station. I still have no idea what “Convergence” is. After beating the game, I actually had to go online to the “Dead Space” wiki in order to understand what was going on, and even then the answers weren’t clear. Is the Marker good or evil? What does it want? Where are these monsters coming from? And why does the government want the artifact? The story confused me so much that I actually went out and bought a copy of “Dead Space” again (which was the only game I’ve sold back to the store in the past three years) just so that I might understand what’s going on. In other words, “Dead Space 2” is compelling and interesting enough to make me play its lame predecessor. So is “Dead Space
2” worth your time and money? Oh, yes. It’s not an amazing game that redefines the survival horror genre, but it’s a welldesigned and well-crafted work of art that provides a genuinely enjoyable gaming experience. And rather than ending after a single playthrough, you have the option to play the game again with New Game Plus (start again with all of the items from the last playthrough). There’s also a new multiplayer mode in which players race to complete objectives as either Sprawl Security Officers or Necromorphs. If you’re interested in playing a good, mature game and you’re a fan of “Resident Evil”style survival horror, then “Dead Space 2” might be perfect for you. Even wearing the color red is banned, because it is believed to encourage negative attitudes and gang activity. Who is in charge of all these changes? It is none other than the newly hired head guidance counselor, Dr. Willard. Thinking
these rules are meant to keep everyone safe, many students overlook the constricting guidelines. However, once their parents begin agreeing with everything the school board says, due to the brainwashing emails sent by Central High, and the school “trouble-makers” are sent to Operation Turnaround, Tom and his friends know things are spiraling out of control. The true danger is finally realized when reports come back from the
teen boot camp. One of Tom’s friends has died, his death being ruled as an “unfortunate accident.” However, Tom and his friends know that he was killed trying to escape. They are now convinced that escaping is the only thing they can do in order to avoid being captured and brought to a similar fate. The author, Francine Prose, does an excellent job in conveying the thin line between safety and obsession. She expos-

The title, After, symbolizes all the events occurring after the Pleasant Valley shooting and shows how one event can cause massive chaos within our living environments. More importantly, Prose’s underlying message in the story emphasizes the protection of civil liberties. When the students are prevented from speaking and acting out against authority, the

They’re going to lose in a courtroom, so I would recommend that they settle out of court.” While Sheen said in a radio interview last week that it would be impossible to do a ninth season of “Two and a Half Men” with the show’s creators in charge, he said in the television in-
terviews he’s ready to work another season. He said CBS owes him an apology, “publicly, while licking my feet.” Sheen, who was hospitalized three times in three months, said that he’s bored now with cocaine. But he said he “exposed people to magic” when they partied with him and that he loved doing drugs. “What’s not to love?” he said on ABC. “Especially when you see how I party. It was epic. The run I was on made Sinatra, Flynn, Jagger, Richards just look like droopy-eyed armless children.” ABC and Radar Online had Sheen’s blood and
urine tested for drugs over the weekend. The results were “a big win for Charlie Sheen, no question,” said Radar’s Dylan Howard. He said the dual tests revealed Sheen hadn’t had drugs in at least 72 hours. When Canning asked Sheen whether the people who supplied him with drugs were out of his life, Sheen hesitated. “That’s nobody’s business,” he said. “I think you know the answer to that.” The interviews heightened the competition between the two top-rated morning shows. ABC spokeswoman Alison Bridgman said Sheen had
promised Saturday that ABC would get the only television interview last weekend but “changed his mind.” Both “Today” and “Good Morning America” said they planned to air more segments of their interview on Tuesday, and ABC is planning a “20/20” special with Sheen on Tuesday. Both networks had their own boasts: “Today” said Sheen had given NBC his “first morning show interview,” while ABC said it had gotten the “first television interview since the controversy erupted.”

While most songs on Top-40 radio tend to follow the “loved today, laughed at tomorrow” cycle, every now and then something great slips through the cracks. Sometimes (although rarely) an artist comes along that makes the public snap out of its routine bad judgment and earns the respect he or she deserves. It seems that the world of music is once again lucky enough to experience this infrequent occasion as Grammy award winner Adele com-
pletely dominates. After winning Best New Artist in 2009, the stage was set for her to make a small dent in the world of popular music, and even earned her an almost-top-20 single with “Chasing Pavements” as well as a top-10 album with her debut, 19. After some time off, Adele is back and is slowly, but surely, taking over. With her single “Rolling in the Deep” selling by the bucket loads on iTunes, Adele is on track to have her first top-20
(most likely top-10) song, which is quite an achievement for an artist like her. Not to mention the fact that her album is shifting huge numbers and is on track to hit number one, it’s obvious that this amazing vocalist, songwriter, and performer is actually getting the success she deserves. On the other side of the pond, Adele made some serious history by becoming the first living artist in almost 50 years to simultaneously have two top-5
entries on both the UK singles chart and album chart. After an amazing performance at the BRIT Awards (the UK Grammy equivalent,) both “Rolling in the Deep” and the album’s second single, “Someone Like You” skyrocketed to the top of the singles chart. Meanwhile, not only did 21 easily sell enough to take control of the top stop on the albums chart, but her debut, 19, sold enough to re-enter at number 4, landing her an extremely rare feat. The

Despite multiple attempts to make the Oscars seem current — including an opening montage that inserted Franco and Hathaway in the bestpicture nominees, “Inception”-style, and an auto-tune “Harry Potter” spoof — some of the biggest applause and longest standing ovations were for a couple of Academy Awards stalwarts. Kirk Douglas delighted the crowd as he jokingly tormented the supporting-actress nominees before announcing Leo as the winner. Once she took the stage, the 94-year-old Douglas remarked to her, “You’re much more beautiful than you were in ‘The Fighter’” — but then Leo went on to drop an F-bomb during her acceptance speech. It was a rare unexpected moment — but the censors bleeped it in time. Later, upon the appearance of Billy Crystal — who hosted the ceremony several times in the 1990s — the audience erupted as one, as if willing him to take over immediately. Hathaway worked hard to keep the proceedings fun and light, playfully twisting in a fringy gown and joking that everyone at

is so anti-pop that the recognition it’s getting is truly an anomaly. Maybe there is still hope for the music world. Finally there can be something on the radio to give us all a break from the “same-old, same-old” sounding songs that we’ll all forget by the end of the year. Trust me on this one; we’re not going to forget Adele any time soon.

LOS ANGELES – These were supposed to be the younger, hipper Academy Awards, the ones that shook up the ceremony’s conventions with popular, great-looking emcees in actors James Franco and Anne Hathaway, who were unlike the middle-aged comedians and TV talk-show hosts of years past. But the results couldn’t have been more traditional, with “The King’s Speech” — a prestigious, impeccably made historical film that cries out “Oscar” with every fiber in its being — winning best picture and three other prizes over more daring, contemporary contenders like “The Social Network” and “Black Swan.” They also couldn’t have been more predictable. Front-runners in other major categories throughout this long and repetitive awards season also took home trophies from Hollywood’s Kodak Theatre Sunday night: best-actor Colin Firth for “The King’s Speech,” best-actress Natalie Portman for “Black Swan,” and supporting actors Christian Bale and Melissa Leo, both for “The Fighter.” “King’s Speech” director Tom Hooper, who’d already won the Directors Guild Award — an excellent predictor of Oscar success.
