Egyptians Protests Country Free From Mubarak

–––––––––––––––––––––––––– Imagine no internet access, no television news channels, no cell phone service, and the launch of a national curfew. Although this may seem a bit daunting, this is just a fragment of what Egypt is facing right now. Motivated by Tunisian protesters who called for more freedom by successfully driving out President Zine al-Abidine Ben-Ali, Egypt is looking to fix their country plagued by poverty, government corruption, police brutality, inequality, and human rights issues. Number one on their agenda is to oust President Hosni Mubarak who has served thirty years as dictator. Prior to media outlets being cut off, people had taken to social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to express unity in expelling Mubarak from presidency. With communication of a revolution rampant, Mubarak ordered the obstruction of media in order to blindside rebels and civilians alike. Eight million protesters later in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, this mass anarchy became a pledge for freedom. But even with armed forces being sent to quell the uprisings, protesters insist on more than just Mubarak’s removal to meet their needs. They want democracy, a new legislative body, and an entire resurgence for a
nation that has been deprived of its liberties. University of California-Davis Professor Nora Radwan elaborates: “The Egyptians understand that there is no guarantee that Mubarak and his government can deliver any constitutional reform or any meaningful change in Egypt.” Since 1967 and following
former President Anwar Sadat’s death, Egypt has been in a “state of emergency” which has been aided by billions of dollars from the United States. However, according to the people of Egypt, the issue of jobs, healthcare, and food goes overlooked while Mubarak has lived luxuriously and operating on abuse of power. Criticized for manipulating elections, prohibiting political parties, swindling money, controlling the content and quantity of media coverage and information in Egypt, and imprisoning individuals without trials under the Emergency Law, it is no wonder Hosni Mubarak is the most hated man in Egypt. As of yet, Mubarak has refused to step down, even amid pleas from U.S. President Barack Obama, out of fear that

The Egyptian protests that sparked off national frenzy beginning Jan. 25 led to recent international support in the form of protests in Chicago and New York City’s Times Square, calling for Mubarak to resign. One of the U.S. protesters, Nader Elrashidy, understands that the risks and potential danger involved with protesters in Egypt is a sacrifice for freedom: “The immediate desire is to regain stability, but there’s an understanding that they need to endure this hopefully short-term suffering to achieve a greater benefit that generations will enjoy.”
Declarative Material: Mundane Art

–––––––––––––––––––––––––– You’ve likely heard about or seen art that seems a bit out there. Artists can create art from any kind of material, image, or theme. More importantly, they’re willing to do so, resulting in exhibits and pieces that seem to have no relation or connection to reality. However, what happens when artists try the exact opposite? For its first exhibit of the semester, the Seton Art Gallery in Dodds brought the works of four artists together for “Declarative Material.” This exhibit portrayed the use of mundane and common items to create art, or alternatively the portrayal of the mundane. The gallery included pieces incorporating stickers, toy army men, box tops, credit cards, and pennies, among other things. The four artists are M. Ho, Amy Pryor, Margaret Roleke, and Rita Valley. The gallery had planned to host a reception on Thursday, January 27, but because of the repetitive snowstorms, had to reschedule it to Wednesday, February 2, and then once more to the next day, Thursday the February 3. The reception was held at the gallery
from 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m., and Amy Pryor, Margaret Roleke, and Rita Valley came to talk about their work. M. Ho lives and works in the Washington D.C. area. Her works have been exhibited in galleries, museums, and institutes in St. Louis, Missouri, Athens, Georgia, New York, Greensboro, North Carolina, and several places in Philadelphia, among others. She has been
awarded grants by the Philadelphia Council of the Arts and a PEW Fellowship in the Arts. For Declarative Material, M. Ho has on display several colleges of newspaper, depicting a mix of abstract concepts and images as well as pieces of contemporary relevance, such as soldiers in wartime. Amy Pryor lives and works in New York City. She holds Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in Art History and Sculpture from Ohio University and is currently com-

USGA President’s Corner
Fellow UNH students, It has been an interesting start to the semester thus far. I hope we don’t have any more snow storms because I’m ready for the sun to come out. Already this semester, it seems that many students, friends, and family have faced hard times. This is also true for myself, and I just want to offer assistance if anyone needs help, advice, has questions about clubs, or would just like to talk. My office door is always open to you. Also, I have some advice for you for the rest of this semester, which has helped me out a lot this year. Make sure you keep track of your work and follow through on your word. Be honest in every situation, no matter what the outcome is, and be true to yourself and others. Lastly, if you say it, then do it. Also, don’t be afraid to be yourself. Let your voice be heard. SCOPE It Out! Did You Know? by Michelle R. Morra
Love is in the air, everywhere I look around. With the start of February, romantic thoughts have been floating around everywhere and love for some fantastic SCOPE events has been spreading. Film and Weekends had a good event filled week last week and there is loads more to come for the rest of the month. This past week’s movie was Due Date, the hilarious comedy with Robert Downing Jr. and Zach Galifianakis. We have all seen the movies where a father is trying to get to the hospital as quickly as possible for the birth of his child. The twist in this version of the old story is that Downing’s character has to hitch a ride with Galifianakis’ character, who is an aspiring actor. There are, quite literally, bumps in the road. If you want to spend two hours laughing your butt off, you need to rent this movie. However, if you want to spend two hours scared out of your mind, stop by Bartels at 9 p.m. on Tuesday and Friday to watch Paranormal Activity 2, this weeks’ movie. This week’s weekend events were fun and all over the place. On Friday, we took a trip to Mount Southington to do the best winter sports and activities ever: skiing. We rented skis or snowboards for all students, and they had a blast going up and down the mountain practically all night. On Saturday, they relaxed in the Bartels Programming Space, while students were able to get a mold of their hands made from wax. There were also henna tattoos. On Sunday, we had a party for the big game! There were wings, pizza, chips, and drinks; we also watched the game on the big screen. Both teams played a really good game, but the Packers won 31 to 25, and the commercials were awesome. If you missed the great events last weekend, no worries. There are more to come this week. On Friday, there will be Antique photos in the Bartels Programming Space from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Come see what you would have looked like if you lived during western times or even further back. On Saturday, Weekends is taking a trip to see Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. Cardio: Short and Intense or Long and Steady
When it comes to cardio training, is it better to work out for a long time at a steady pace or for a brief period at a more demanding rate? Experts believe both routines have their benefits, and you must identify your goal before pursuing a specific plan. Cardio workouts have two benefits; they help burn calories and improve heart function. If your aim is strictly to lose weight, you must focus on the number of calories expended. According to Dr. Glenn Gaesser, exercise physiologist at the University of Virginia, losing weight is dependent on both intensity and duration. However, “since longer duration can usually be tolerated better than higher intensity, duration should be emphasized,” Gesser explains. In order to improve your cardiovascular health, you must elevate your heart rate by exercising at a more intense pace. This type of routine should be kept within 25 to 45 minutes and should not be performed every day. In addition to increased heart function, these short, more difficult workouts boost performance and endurance. Fitness experts are beginning to stress the benefit of interval training over more standardized methods of steady calorie burning. According to the Mayo Clinic, alternating intense bouts of cardio activity with short periods of moderate exercise burns more calories and improves aerobic activity. In addition to improving heart health, interval training can help stimulate your body’s ability to burn calories. New York Times reporter Peter Jaret called attention to the lasting benefits of interval training in his article “A Healthy Mix of Rest and Motion.” “After interval training, the amount of fat burned in an hour of continuous moderate cycling increased by 36 percent,” Jaret wrote. Another way to keep your heart rate up is to vary your exercise day to day. Although you may burn the most calories on the stairclimber, switching to a different machine once in a while will prevent adaptation and promote progress. “Research has shown that short bouts of exercise—as few as three 10-minute sessions—are just as effective as long ones, provided the total cumulative workout time and intensity level are comparable,” Shape magazine says. Get in touch with your inner child! Jumping rope, doing jumping jacks, jumping up and down, and running up the stairs are all great ways to squeeze in a few minutes of cardio activity.

Queen Elizabeth II
February 6, 2011 marked the 59th anniversary of the day that Elizabeth II became queen on February 6, 1952. This is not to be confused with June 2, 1953, the actual date of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, in which she was formally crowned monarch of the United Kingdom in a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey. After the death of her father, Elizabeth was immediately proclaimed Britain’s new monarch, but remained in seclusion for the first three months of her reign as she mourned her father. During the summer of 1952, she began to perform routine duties of the sovereign. In November, she carried out her first state opening of the Parliament. Born on April 21, 1926 in London, England, Elizabeth was the oldest daughter of Albert, duke of York and his wife, Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. She was the child of the younger son of King George V, and had little prospect of acceding to the throne until her uncle Edward III abdicated in her father’s favor. He did so on December 11, 1936, at which time her father became King George VI, and she became heir presumptive. Early in 1947, Princess Elizabeth went with the king and queen to South Arica. After her return, there was the announcement of her betrothal to her distant cousin Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten of the Royal Navy, formerly Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark. The marriage took place in Westminster Abbey on November 20, 1947. Their first child, Prince Charles (Charles Philip Arthur George), was born on November 1, 1948, at Buckingham Palace. In the summer of 1951, the health of King George VI began to seriously decline, and the Princess Elizabeth represented him at various occasions. In January 1952, the princess and the duke were en route to Sangana, Kenya when the news reached them of the king’s death. On the accession of Queen Elizabeth, her son Prince Charles became heir apparent. He was named Prince of Wales on July 26, 1958. The ceremony at Westminster was one of pomp and pageantry, and the characteristically poised Elizabeth delivered in a solemn and clear voice the coronation oath that bound her to the service of the people of Great Britain and the British Commonwealth. In the procession through the streets of London that followed, Elizabeth and her husband were joined by representatives from the more than 40 member states of the Commonwealth, including heads of state, sultans, and prime ministers. British troops like the Yeomen of the Guard were joined by a great variety of Commonwealth troops, including police from the Solomon Islands, Malaysians in white uniforms and green sarongs, Pakistanis in puggaree headdresses, Canadian Mounties, and New Zealanders and Australians in wide-brimmed hats. After the parade, Elizabeth stood with her family on the Buckingham Palace balcony and waved to the crowd as jet planes of the Royal Air Force flew across the Mall in tight formation. The queen’s other children were Princess Anne (Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise), born August 15, 1950; Prince Andrew (Andrew Albert Christian Edward), born February 19, 1960, and created duke of York in 1986; and Prince Edward (Edward Anthony Richard Louis), born March 10, 1964. All these children have the surname “ Windsor,” but in 1960 Elizabeth decided to create the hyphenated name Mountbatten-Windsor for other descendants not styled prince or princess and royal highness. Elizabeth’s first grandchild (Princess Anne’s son) was born on November 15, 1977. The queen seemed increasingly aware of the modern role of the monarchy, allowing, for example, the televising of the royal family’s domestic life in 1970 and condoning the formal dissolution of her sister’s marriage in 1978. However, after the failed marriage of her son and Diana, princess of Wales, and Diana’s death in 1997, popular feeling in Britain turned against the royal family, which was thought to be out of touch with contemporary British life. In line with her earlier attempts at modernizing the monarchy, the queen, after 1997, sought to present a less-stuffy and less-traditional image of the monarchy. These attempts have met with mixed success. She is known to favor simplicity in court life and is also known to take a serious and informed interest in government business, aside from the traditional and ceremonial duties. Privately she has become a keen horsewoman; she keeps racehorses, frequently attends races, and periodically visits the Kentucky stud farms in the United States. Her financial and property holdings have made her one of the world’s richest women. On April 21, 2006, Queen Elizabeth turned 80, making her the third oldest person to hold the British crown. Although she has begun to hand off some official duties to her children, notably Charles, the heir to the throne, she has given no indication that she intends to abdicate.

Lingering Effects of Cyclone Yasi Worsen Storms

Cyclone Yasi began as a tropical low throughout Australia, which brought wild storms and flash flooding throughout the northeastern and now southern parts of the continent. Yasi was active over central Australia earlier in the week, with devastating winds and torrential rains bearing down Saturday. Since Yasi, one of the largest-ever cyclones, was tireless for almost a week, residents in the cyclone zones of Melbourne and Victoria state tried strenuously to pick through what was left of their homes. More than seven inches of rain fell in just a few hours overnight Friday in some of Melbournes’ neighborhoods, with winds gusting up to 80 mph that were constantly heard knocking down trees. Drains were overwhelmed, which caused flash flooding that covered streets and swamped homes as well. The S.E.S.
said 84 people were rescued from cars that were stalled in flooded streets or from inundated properties. Many parts of Australia have suffered a summer of awful weather, including pounding rains across northeastern Queensland State that caused the nation's worst flooding in decades, killing 35 people and causing an estimated $5.6 billion in damage. Yasi ripped across the coast near Cairns on Wednesday night, tearing apart dozens of homes and damaging hundreds more, cutting power to tens of thousands of people and flattening millions of dollars worth of crops. Only one death was reported. Residents and officials were amazed the death toll was not higher. The storm thrashed the coast with up to 170 mph (280 kph) winds and sent waves crashing ashore two blocks into seaside communities, as tens of thousands of people huddled in evacuation centers. The massive surge of water ripped through
homes, taking out walls and pushing resident's belongings into other people's houses and yards. Along with belongings, electricity, phone service, and plumbing were all cut off from homes as well. Electricity and phone service were gradually being restored, and some 4,000 troops were sent in to help clear roads of downed trees, power lines, and twisted metal roofs torn from homes. Efforts were hampered by drenching rain in many parts of the disaster zone. Because Australia's far northeast is sparsely populated, Yasi, despite its size, didn't hit any major cities as it charged across the continent. But the isolation was making cleanup more difficult, as authorities struggled to reach outof-the-way towns. The government has warned that the damage from Yasi will significantly add to the damage bill the country is facing because of the floods, but that it is too early to put a figure on the amount.

A massive winter storm has aimed itself at the central United States, threatening to unload a dangerous and potential deadly mix of sleet, snow, and ice that could affect nearly 100 million people by the time it hits the northeast. WASHINGTON – The U.S. labor force has been split into two groups: the relieved and the desperate. If you have a job, you can exhale; you’re less likely to lose it than at any point in at least 14 years. If you’re unemployed? Good luck. Finding a job remains a struggle 20 months after the recession technically ended. Employers won’t likely step
up hiring until they feel more confident about the economy. A result is that people who are unemployed are staying so for longer periods. Of the 13.9 million Americans the government says were unemployed last month, about 1.8 million had been without work for at least 99 weeks — essentially two years. That’s nearly double the number in January 2010. Yet the deep job cuts of the recession have long since ended. In January,
companies announced plans to trim fewer than 39,000 jobs, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas. That was 46 percent fewer than a year earlier. More strikingly, it was the fewest number of planned layoffs in January since Challenger began keeping track in 1993. For all of 2010, planned layoffs hit a 13year low. Eventually, consumer spending will rise high enough that companies will need to accelerate

hiring to keep up with demand. workers. After the best holiday shopping season in four years, stores cut fewer than 5,800 jobs last month. That’s only about one-third the number of a year earlier. And it’s far fewer than the nearly 54,000 in January 2009 at the depths of the recession. “If you’re bringing value to your company, you don’t have to worry,” says Mickey Kampsen, president of Management Recruiters of Charlottesville, Va. Courtney Miller-Rao, 28, is feeling more secure about her job than at any time since she began working a decade ago. She’s an auctioneer, selling cars for an auto salvage company near Waterbury, Conn. “We’re growing immensely, we’re opening a new branch, selling more cars,” she says. “I don’t feel like I have to work 10 to 14 hours a day to keep my job.” Yet employers still aren’t ready to start hiring aggressively. A government survey of business payrolls released Friday showed a net gain of only 36,000 jobs in January — barely one-fourth the number needed just to keep pace with population growth. Harsh winter weather helped explain the weak hiring. But not entirely. A bigger factor is that companies have become more productive. After slashing jobs during the recession, they discovered they could produce the same, or more, with smaller staffs. A company that might have had a half-dozen people working on business development, for instance, might now have three, says Bobbi Moss, vice president of executive recruiters MRINetwork Govig & Associates in Scottsdale, Ariz. Businesses have created an average of just 82,000 net jobs each month over the past year. That’s fewer than half the number a strong economy would be expected to create. It’s why so many unemployed people have been left stranded, unable for many months to land jobs. An average of 4.6 unemployed people are competing for each job opening, the government says. In a healthy job market, no more than two people would be vying for each opening. “Without employers hiring, it’s still pretty tough for the unemployed worker,” says Steven Davis, a University of Chicago economist. In January 2009, Wayne Drescher of Mishawaka, Ind., lost his job of 23 years as an auto-industry engineer. Since then, he’s landed just two interviews; neither led to a job. “I’m 59 years old and for the first time in my life have filed for food stamps,” he says. “I have no health insurance at all.”
Eventually, employers will find they can’t keep squeezing ever-higher output from their slimmeddown staffs that survived the recession. Stronger customer demand will require more workers. Reports from the Institute for Supply Management indicate that both service and manufacturing companies plan to step up hiring because of a rise in orders. Even then, many of the unemployed may be left out. That’s because even companies that must hire will often avoid unemployed applicants — especially those who’ve been out of work for many months. Some employers worry that workers lose skills when they’re idle for months. They also fret that formerly unemployed workers wouldn’t stay long in a new job, especially if it carried less pay and stature than their old jobs — and that they’d quit once a better opportunity arose. “There’s a lot of hiring managers that think that way: ‘Only get me people who are already working,’” says Andrew Beck, 59, who’s been unemployed since he lost his PR job at a Connecticut hospital chain in March 2009. “They must think we’re lazy or we’re no good.” Beck estimates he’s sent out more than 600 resumes and had 25 interviews in nearly two years. No luck. He and other long-term unemployed are evidence that the longer you’re out of a job, the harder it often is to find one. The Labor Department says that at the end of last year, 28 percent of people who’d been unemployed for fewer than five weeks found a job the next month. By contrast, only 10 percent of those unemployed for at least 27 weeks found work within a month. Long-term unemployment has grown so much that the department is changing how it records it. It will now calculate how many people have been out of work for up to five years. Previously, it tracked long-term unemployment only up to two years. Lorena Atwell, 47, of Orlando, Fla., has sent out 1,200 resumes since she lost her job as an administrative assistant in October 2008. She’s exhausted her 99 weeks of unemployment benefits, burned through her savings and struggled with no health insurance. Now, she and her teenage son get by on child-support payments and food donations from church pantries. “It’s almost like the best of times and the worst of times,” Challenger says. “If you’re on the outside, you’re still having a hard time getting back in . But if you have a job, you’re holding onto it. You have more leverage, and you have more confidence.”

Well, it’s not quite summer time yet, but it is time to file your 2011-2012 Free Application for Federal Student Aid, otherwise known as the FAFSA! In order to receive any form of need-based financial aid from the University of New Haven, students must complete a FAFSA. You must complete the application electronically by visiting the Department of Education’s website, www.fafsa.gov. An important piece of information you will need is the school code number, which is 001397. You will also need you and your parent’s Federal PIN numbers. The deadline for completion of the FAFSA is March 1, 2011. If you are confused about how to file your FAFSA, or have any questions regarding the deadlines, please consult the Financial Aid Office as soon as possible. January thru March is a two month window in which students are able to file their FAFSA application on time, so the earlier you get it done, the less stressed you will be as the deadline approaches! Filing a FAFSA after March 1, 2011 will result in your financial aid being considered late, and your award may be decreased by a late penalty. The later you file, the less you will receive! Along with filing your FAFSA, it is also important to make sure that you have completed all of the documentation necessary to receive financial aid from UNH. Pryor’s works for Declarative Material include a collage of recycling symbols and paint on paper titled Landscape 2002-2008 (2002-2008), No Postage Necessary (2009), a collection of pre-paid postal codes and acrylic on panel, and, perhaps most noteworthy, a collection of coupons, checks, and patterned security envelopes on a very large muslin fabric called Deluge (2007). All of these works and the others Pryor contributed to the exhibit began with materials gathered from
junk mail, magazines, and packaging. “I see these works as a verbal-visual landscape and as an investigation into the language of consumption and exchange” – Amy Pryor. Margaret Roleke lives and works in Redding, Connecticut. Working with a variety of media, Roleke’s work is political in nature, frequently addressing the problems in the world, particularly war. Her contribution to Declarative Material is a series of works depicting all the aspects of war, from the soldiers to the machinery, using stickers and plastic toy soldiers. One such work, War Se-
ries: Men and Machines (2008), depicts an entire battlefield, including the soldiers, weapons, ships and other nearly every other important aspect of a battle. Another work, Pink Men (2007), depicts an army of pink soldiers sprawled over on a wall, with the reason open to interpretation. Rita Valley lives and works in Connecticut. Her work has been featured in many universities as well as museums and her book God Hates Artists was acquired by the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Her work addresses the current financial crisis, but for Declarative Materi-
al, she choose to look specifically at “our seductive plastic friend, the credit card” (Rita Valley). Using colored beads on fabric, Valley created perfect images of credit cards of several brands and varieties. Valley’s art allows her to “order the universe, to feel good or sane, and occasionally, both” (Valley). Declarative Material began on January 20 and will continue until February 11. Everyone is welcome to come in and see the first of what will surely be a great series of spring exhibitions in the Seton Art Gallery. Who knows, maybe you’ll see your credit card among Rita’s!

require between three to eight pounds of nutrient to make one pound of meat. It’s fairly inefficient. Animals consume food and produce waste. Cultured meat doesn’t have a digestive system.” He believes people will need to produce food in an open area. And, from then on, the scientist concludes by saying in the interview that they have to look over all of these ideas, and after, decide to either move their progress on, or stay motionless.

Watching the Super Bowl this weekend was a great experience! Regardless of the fact that I don’t particularly care for the Packers, the Steelers, or football in general, I really enjoyed the quality time spent with my friends. With all the snow lately, I’ve been spending a lot more time than would usually be possible with friends, and the Super Bowl party at my condo turned out to be the culmination of all the time spent together.

More often than not, I have overheard people arguing over various topics under the sun, and sometimes it’s completely unbelievable as to the reasoning behind some of these arguments. I often wonder where people get some of their ideas as to how things should work in life. It’s even more annoying when you listen to these arguments that lead nowhere, especially when people with the ludicrous opinions cannot provide substantial reason for why they think things should work the way they want them to. Obviously going up to her and saying “hey get a room,” or being very blunt is not always going to work. Let’s be honest, for some people, it encourages them even more because they like giving people something to talk about. However, I am going to assume that this person is
in an event: a little thing called the half time show! This year’s half time show featured the Black Eyed Peas who, until their most recent album, were doing pretty well in the world of music. I’ll leave the detailed review of their Super Bowl performance to Dave Iannacone in his feature this week (page 15) but in my opinion, it left a lot to be desired. Auto tune was ever present, Fergie kept shrieking, and Usher descended from the sky halfway through the performance. I’ll give them awesome visuals but overall, this year’s performance was lackluster.
In the end, Green Bay pulled out the win becoming the victors of the 45th Super Bowl with a score of 31 -25 and kept my friends happy, ending the weekend on a good note! Good friends and good food almost always equals good times, and this weekend was no exception. I may dislike the new Black Eyed Peas album and the song “The Time” but their lift of “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” has so far summed up my time at UNH. I look forward to having more great times in my remaining time here!

As usual, the conversation went to “how terrible the country is doing” and “our downhill decline into the abyss.” Well naturally, I have my own opinion, but I always want to hear why someone feels the way they do about our president or our government. So, naturally, I ask why. It’s never a welcome question, especially since many people don’t know why. The answer usually is “I just don’t like what he’s doing that’s all.” How many people with these flimsy opinions actually watched the State of one over how President the Union on January 25, Obama is doing running 2011? The best response to our country. The topic this was when I was actu-
ally asked “the State of the what?” This is the point when I walk away in an argument. There’s just no point in arguing with the people who only believe they are right because they just like the way their opinion sounds. This reminds me of the conversation I had with someone who absolutely didn’t like President Obama’s health care reform bill. I asked what specifically this person didn’t like about it. Their answer was that they didn’t know, but they just didn’t like it. Oh, well then, by all means, let’s impeach on your strong feelings based on nothing shall we. If you do not know what you don’t like about some-
thing, how can it be fixed? To sum up my aggravation with political opinions, here are a few rules to follow when you have something to complain about. If you didn’t vote, you cannot complain about which president was elected. If you don’t really know the state of the union, you cannot complain about how you don’t like it. And lastly, if you are going to give your opinion about something, which you are entitled to do, be prepared to back it up. It’s better to be more informed about a particular topic than to just have a basic understanding of things or not an understanding at all.

Granted, the Packers never lost the lead, but it sure was frustrating watching that lead shrink throughout the game. This weekend began with me heading home for a friend’s birthday, a somewhat bittersweet moment since I like spending my time at UNH, but I will concede that it was still awesome to be home. Then, Sunday morning I headed back up to jolly old West Haven from New Jersey and got back to my condo just in time to start making some awesome food! The menu for the day consisted of guacamole, chili, Brie
truly your friend, and, if that’s the case, you should approach her (preferably at a quiet time when the boyfriend isn’t around) and talk to her openly, but respectfully. For example: “Hey. I just wanted to talk to you about you and your boyfriend. I know you guys are that close, but sometimes it’s kind of awkward when its around me. Do you think you could tone it down just a little?” Don’t be surprised if your friend asks questions about why it bothers you, and if she does, tell her honestly about the reasons why it bothers you. They should ask their students what time is best for all of them, because frankly a lot of us have other classes too. Edible Opinions Claire’s Corner Copia

The first stop on the Edible Opinions restaurant tour was Claire’s Corner Copia. (1000 Chapel St.) Situated right across the street from the UNH shuttle stop, Claire’s is the perfect stop for anyone at any time. This cozy restaurant is open all day every day, and has such an extensive menu that even the pickiest eater will find something to enjoy. Claire’s is vegetarian but meat-eaters can order sandwiches with soy meat, or try one of the bigger dishes like eggplant parmigiana or the Mexican lasagna. They’re meat-free but big enough to leave you stuffed. And that’s not to say that the rest of the menu isn’t just as satisfying. The options seem endless with breakfast food, sandwiches, salads, and a variety of Mexican dishes, like quesadillas and burritos. We stopped in last Sunday afternoon after taking some time to look at the huge menu. It definitely felt overwhelming at first, but we ultimately decided on the Grilled Cheese Florentine and the Mexican Lasagna. The Grilled Cheese Florentine was a combination of savory, simple, and refreshing. It is made on a fresh baguette with baby spinach, mozzarella, and chunked tomatoes, and was served with a small side of pesto pasta. The Mexican Lasagna can only be described as unique in texture and powerful with flavor. It consists of refried beans, corn, onions, cheddar cheese, corn and wheat tortillas, chunked tomatoes, mushrooms, zucchini, sour cream, and homemade salsa. While the food was good, it wouldn’t necessarily be the only reason to visit Claire’s again. The atmosphere was the ultimate deal-breaker. It’s comfortable but quirky, and somehow, that’s the perfect combination. Everything from mix-and-match table and chairs, to the random brick walls and the pictures that hang on them, to the black and white checkered floor makes this a unique eating experience in New Haven. You’ll feel at home whether you’re with a couple of friends or on your own. We stopped in just before the dinnertime rush, and you’ll probably be better off visiting then, too. While there is plenty of space to eat, the layout is a little awkward and could definitely get irritating in big crowds. Even if that does happen, though, just find a little corner seat to enjoy this great atmosphere, free Wi-Fi, and tasty (but also healthy) food. Why are Games for Girls so Lame? There was a bit of buzz recently surrounding an interview that USA Today conducted with Microsoft honcho Steve Ballmer. The article was picked up by video-games blog Kotaku and thereafter lambasted in the comments section with all the usual fury and derogation for which comments sections are known. In the original article, Ballmer talked about the Kinect and, more specifically, about its role in Microsoft’s initiative at attracting a young female audience to console gaming. It is easy to balk at anecdotal comments from Ballmer like, “My wife used to say, ‘No, no, that’s the machine the boys use,’ and now she says, ‘Yeah, I want to go watch movies. Let’s go play the dance game.’” Comments like these send blood pressure soaring among female gamers, especially those of us who remember the ‘90s and the first push at including women in the world of games with such memorables as “Secret Paths in the Forest.” Yet there may be many out there, like Ballmer, who don’t get why the push to make games accessible to women in this way is offensive, so I’d like to take this opportunity to break it down, starting with explaining why Microsoft isn’t actually evil (or maybe they are - I’ll get to that later). Like every other technology company out there, Microsoft wants the most
users possible for its system. As it targets the users it doesn’t have already - mainly people who don’t play video games- a great majority of the people in these crosshairs (sadly) are women. The approach the first lineup of Kinect titles has been taking in addressing this issue is hardly novel: make games less gamey, or worse, make games that are more about graphics and interaction rather than gameplay. At this point, I have to concede to the Kinect that the problem here is real. Why don’t more women play games? Many game designers when challenged with the task of making games for women respond defensively by asking, “Why should we be trying to make games for people who don’t like to play games to begin with?” In all fairness, there will probably always be a subset of people/women who just don’t like games. I’m OK with that, but I know that that’s not the case for the majority. The “no gurls alowd” sign has been hanging over the industry for far too long, the aura of rampant misogyny clings to it like a retro J-RPG status effect. What puts women off, as best as I can discern from my own experience and observation (disclaimer! This is an editorial!), is primarily (believe it or not) not the rampant sexism, not the big guns and violence, and not even the lethargic culture of Hot Pockets and LaZ-Boys. Rather, it’s the fact that
all too often the first game we’re handed sometime in elementary school is some crap kiddie title in which all you can do is pat the puppy and put on makeup. If that’s your first experience in gaming, how could you not be like “Pshh, this is dumb” and forever turn your back on the medium? For the girls who do press on and explore the games not directly market-

The bigger problem behind this vicious cycle is that games have an innate and oft-exclusive language of their own; it’s a language that takes some learning. The most hardcore gamers
ed to them, they are often forced to walk a very thin line between giving up on the gamey games to join the girls who gave up “Barbie DS” back in kindergarten, or risk abandoning their feminine culture to join the boys who are marketed all the fun stuff. This is where the vicious cycle begins. Publishers make games less like games and more like lame interactive experiences to market to a population that they assume dislikes games. The games produced under this model suck. Yet inevitably some of the target audience will buy the product anyway only to discover that it really is lame. The target
of our current generation, many of whom are going on to become game designers, have this language hardwired into their brains when they are exposed to games at early (and earlier and earlier) ages. The problem with this language is not only that it needs time to be learned and developed, but also that it is an inherently masculine language. What I mean by this is not in terms of aesthetics, but how the mechanics lead the gamer through periods of stress and relaxation. Women respond differently to stress than men. While men under stress tend to leap into a fight-orflight state, women tend to

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Seth Grahame-Smith, author of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, has a knack for creating alternate storylines. In his latest novel, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Grahame-Smith reconstructs the life of one of the greatest American presidents. A surprisingly entertaining read from start to finish, Vampire Hunter introduces readers to a different Abraham Lincoln, one with an interesting side job. The story begins as Lincoln’s mother becomes deathly ill and eventually dies of what doctors call “milk sickness.” Abe soon discovers from his father, however, that vampires are responsible for the
death, and he makes it his mission in life to kill every vampire in America. Fast forward approximately five years and we find a teenage Abe devoted to hunting vampires. Abe is tall and robust for his age and able to handle his hunting axe quite skillfully. Unfortunately, one particular hunt almost costs him his life, had not a mysterious vampire named Henry Sturges intervened. Henry, Abe realizes, is not like other vampires; he does not share the same blood-thirsty instinct as his comrades and insists that not all vampires are evil. Henry and Abe soon develop a close friendship, and Henry offers to help Abe in his search for

For example, if we know women respond to stressful situations differently than men, make a game that takes that into consideration. Instead of the quick bursts of intense action followed by cut scenes or load screens, draw the gameplay out, give the player time to strategize, but also the opportunity to go in for the kill at a moment’s notice. Comments like those of Mr. Ballmer might lead one to think that the industry thinks very little of women. Their actions in marketing primarily wellness games to women and puppy and kitten games to girls unfortunately seem to back up this theory. To fight this, we need more female game designers. We need women who know the language of games, but also know and understand the limitations of the language. We also need men who are interested in pushing the boundaries of this medium in new and unprecedented directions. Until this shift happens, until we can get this right, no new piece of technology, no feature, and no peripheral can hope to lay a claim to this infamous untapped million-dollar market. If the next generation of games and game systems really want to target the ever-elusive “girl-gamer,” they need to work on a new language of games, which is no easy task to be sure. The new language has to evolve from what is successful in the old language - an emphasis on the importance of good game feel, solid mechanics and clear feedback systems. I don’t just mean that there should just be more games like “Katamari Damacy,” games that are fun, approachable, have solidcontrols and which nobody can really hate (right?). Or “The Sims,” one of the most infamously accessible games, and which again has not only solid mechanics and dynamics but also is a platform for seemingly complex emotional interactions. Emotional content is important in girl games, but this doesn’t need to equate to sentimentality. More than that, interactions between characters need to have solid consequences to gameplay (something

Dave’s Music Report The Half Time (Dirty Bit): The Review
Seeing as last week’s article was about the Super Bowl Half Time show, I wanted to write about something different this week. However, this year’s performances, not just at half time, but throughout the whole event, were so noteworthy that I couldn’t resist. The festivities kicked off with (somewhat unfortunately) the best musical performance of the night: Glee star Lea Michelle’s rendition of “American The Beautiful.” There wasn’t anything particularly exciting about the song, but she sang all of the right notes and didn’t over-sing the song, thus immediately putting her ahead of the pack. Next came the singing of the National Anthem, which can, on occasion, be just as exciting as the half time show. This year, Christina Aguilera had the honor of performing the song, which was pretty much guaranteed to be a success. Unfortunately, it was pret-
ty much the complete opposite. Christina has been almost universally praised for her amazing vocal abilities and stage-presence, but she completely missed the mark this time around, to pretty much everyone’s surprise. The most glaring misstep was obviously her lyrical flub by singing, “What so proudly we watched” instead of “What so proudly we hailed,” but also missed some key notes and over sang pretty much the entire thing. Luckily, she didn’t look too shaken up about it, and the audience supported her all the way through. As far as the half time performance, well this one was a doozey. The Black Eyed Peas are easily one of the most popular groups of the past few years, and have been known to put on a great show. Whether
or not they lived up to the hype is a completely debatable topic. Without a doubt, the performance was a visual spectacle, starting with the foursome descending onto the stage

The Chrysler ad was “the big story of the night,” according to NM Incite, a Nielsen/McKinsey Co. that tracks online buzz. Another hit was a Volkswagen’s ad that showed a boy in a Darth Vader costume trying to use “The Force” on objects, including the Passat. “It really wasn’t selling a car, it was selling a feeling, and it tapped into its target market of families very effectively, which you usually don’t see in a car ad,” said Robert Kolt, an instructor at Michigan State University College of Communication Arts & Sciences. The entire stage was then transformed into the word “Love” (even through it may have taken a couple of reads to get it) where the group performed their breakthrough hit “Where Is the Love?” which kicked into their most recent single “The Time (Dirty Bit).” Luckily the latter was not heavily focused on before kicked back into “I Gotta Feeling” to close up the show. Overall, this would have been an incredible performance if watched on mute. This was visually one of the best Half Time shows I have ever seen, but musically probably the worst. The use of auto-tune just did not work, and the group’s only true vocalist just wasn’t singing well at all. The group’s lesser members, Taboo and apl.
de.ap didn’t get much featured time (as usual) making this almost entirely a Will/Fergie-love fest. However, the staging was incredible; the dancers on the field did some amazing things in their light-up outfits, and the choreography was really spot on. It was really cool to see the stage start out relatively small and transform the way it did. On the flip side, there wasn’t really anything in this performance that wasn’t just regurgitated textbook-B.E.P. From the Tron dancers to the entire mood of the performance, it was completely the same-old, same-old. Coming from a group that completely missed the mark with their current album, that just didn’t fly. So although this year’s Super Bowl was (arguably) a great game, its music was pretty much just an awful experience.
