The theatre was packed with students and faculty all eager to hear of Cashman’s story. He started out as an intern for security in 1986, and now finds himself at the top as the General Manager. He modestly doesn’t take all of the credit, but holds five World Series rings – four of
any professor here at the university. He’s not very tall, his character is modest and down to earth, and he’s very polite. Cashman said, “I’m not the sharpest knife in the drawer. That should give you all some hope!” There was nothing significant about Cashman as he started out as a security guard for the Yankees. He was simply in the right place at the right time. He knew certain people who he treated with respect, which he

Palin for President in UNH Professor Delivers Music from the Heart 2012?

–––––––––––––––––––––––––– For around a year now, the United States has been under the control of President Barack Obama, and feelings are mixed with regards to how well or how poorly he is doing. Sarah Palin, as a regular contributor for Fox News, has been stepping back into the U.S. political stage since running for Vice President, and on Feb. 6 she was the keynote speaker at the National Tea Party Convention. Here, she spoke of issues such as energy, taxes, American spirit, President Obama, and her bid for the White House in 2012. During the 2008 election process, Sarah Palin was ridiculed heavily for her mannerisms and, in general, knowledge of important issues (or to some a lack thereof) and even now, this ridicule remains. Because of this, some may question how she hopes to secure the bid for the 2012 presidential election; however, she has not been deterred and continues to be the self proclaimed "hockey-mom." In her speech, she put down the president, saying "...it's a lot big-
ger than any charismatic guy with a teleprompter" and "now a year later, I got to ask the supporters of all that, how is that hope-y, change-y stuff working out for ya?" With statements like that, it's no wonder that the White House fired back, criticizing Palin due to notes that she had written on her hand prior to her speech at the Tea Party Convention, reading "energy, tax, American spirit." Following Obama's visit to a press briefing, Robert Gibbs, the White House press secretary, wrote "eggs" "milk" and "bread" on his hand before crossing "bread" out and writing "hope" and "change," clearly mocking Palin. With this stage set up for Palin's potential push for the 2012 White House bid, many question whether she is actually interested in the bid or if she is simply trying to gain publicity. She stated on Fox News that she is not ahead of any other potential Republican nominee for the presidential bid, but also that it would be "absurd" for her not to consider running. World’s Tallest Building Closes

On Feb. 8, 2010 one of the tallest buildings in the world was forced to close only after a month. The Burj Khalifa in Dubai has been closed off to the public. Engineers of the building said that electrical problems have been ruled as part of the blame on the viewing deck. The owners of the building said they are not sure whether or not the rest of the building is dealing with the same issues. According to the Associated Press Reports, the
building has office buildings, apartments, and a hotel of 12,000 tenants and office workers. There were subcontractors working on the issues at hand when the technical issues about the power supply were brought forward. The builders are committed to the highest quality in standards. The owner said it is unclear if the building will reopen or if the tickets will be refunded to the customers. The shutdown comes at a bad time for Dubai. The city is currently facing a slump in tourist activity and they hope to reopen the building soon.

The Chinese calendar is different from the normal calendar used today. Like the Jewish and Islamic calendars, it is a lunar calendar and is divided into twelve months of either twenty-nine or thirty days. The calendar is synchronized with the solar year by the addition of extra months at fixed intervals. This year is known as the year of the tiger. With that said, let’s look into the origins of the Chinese New Year and all of the celebrations that are involved in celebrating the New Year. The origins and celebrations were actually born out of fear and myth. The legend spoke of the wild beast called Nien that appeared at the end of each year, attacking and killing villagers. The villagers used loud noises and bright lights to scare the beast away. Hence the Chinese New Year celebrations were born. Today, the fifteen day New Year festivities are celebrated with a week of vacation in metropolitan areas of China, with the biggest celebration being on the eve of the holiday. When the New Year arrives, fireworks cover the city. What most people do not know is that there are other important days within the fifteen day New Year Festival. Jie Cai Ceng is the name given to the fifth day of the celebration. It is a day that is given to welcoming the gods of wealth and prosperity, believing that they come down from the heavens. On this day, many businesses participate in the festivities by setting off firecrackers, believing that it will bring them prosperity and good fortune for their business. Another special day is called Yuan Xiao Jie, the “Festival of Lanterns.” It is the fifteenth day of the New Year and it marks the end of all of the celebrations. All types of lanterns are lit throughout the streets and poems and riddles are written for entertainment. There are also paper lanterns on wheels created in the form of either a rabbit or the animal of the year. The rabbit lantern goes back to a Chinese myth about a female goddess who jumped onto the moon. So she would not travel alone, she brought a rabbit with her to keep her company. Legend says that if your heart is pure enough, you can see the goddess and her rabbit on the moon on this day. This year the Chinese New Year celebrations began on Sunday, Feb. 14. And at the same time, you’re competing against 20+ clubs that excel at their own time. Anything can happen. Winning is the hardest thing to do. And you’re in an environment where the only thing to do is win.

This week your grub gabbers Heather and Zack decided to give you one sweet review…literally! Charli’s Cupcake Factory located at 912 Boston Post Road is a little bakery tucked away among the big department stores and other small businesses crowding the area. The bakery specializes in cupcakes and makes only cupcakes and their bigger cohorts, cakes. When you walk through the front door the first thing that hits you is PINK! Almost everything that can be pink is pink (convenient for Valentine’s Day). Despite the high pink-to-other-color-ratio, the decorations work perfectly and made us feel welcome and, if possible, more excited about getting cupcakes. Now, on to the part you’ve all been waiting for: THE CUPCAKES! The first thing we noted was that they are HUGE. They may as well be advertised as small cakes rather than cupcakes. One of Charli’s best is capable of easily feeding two people, but in the spirit of bringing you the best review we possible can, Zack and Heath-
er each tried a different kind of cupcake. Heather decided to try out the Reese’s peanut butter cup cupcake. Now, without reading the fine print on the label, she quite understandably put this cupcake in the same category as Reese’s pie and Reese’s ice cream: just some plain cupcake with Reese’s on top to try to spice things up. She thought wrong. This amazingly delicious cupcake consisted of a Reese’s cake base with Reese’s frosting and Reese’s crumbles on top. In one word, WOW! Holy Reese’s, Batman! The cake part was moist and delicious, the frosting wasn’t too thick or sugary, and the Reese’s crumbles on top offered a nice bite of that wonderful peanut butter goodness. She even had enough left from her first tasting to eat the rest while writing this article (it’s still just as good!). For Zack, there are few things that get him to melt: puppies, chocolate, and yes…red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting! This delicious treat, in all of its red velvety aston-
ishment, literally is to die for. Go try it for yourself if you don’t believe us! Edible gold, pretty much! Charli’s also makes cakes and had a few on display in the bakery (only the really cool 3-D ones of course!). They also make gourmet cupcakes, organic cupcakes, fat free cupcakes, and muffins. Kennedy Festival Offers Students Opportunity

Every year, New Englanders and New Yorkers alike gather at a local university for a celebration. Only a privileged few are invited, but the opportunity to become one of those few is great. This gathering is known as region one’s Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival. This year, the festival occurred at the end of January at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, NH.

The festival, which occurs in numerous regions around the country, is a celebration of theater. There are numerous workshops, performances, classes, and training sessions for actors, stage crew, and technical crew. Hundreds of colleges and universities located in New England and, most recently, New York compete for the honor to perform their dramas, comedies, and musicals in front of their peers. Only six shows are chosen each year. Two years ago, the University of New Haven’s Columbinus was
selected as one of these pieces. This year, as is every UNH Fall drama, The Pillowman was nominated, held, but unfortunately was not selected to be performed. Several actors involved in the University of New Haven’s theater department were chosen to compete in the Irene Ryan acting scholarship competition. Robert Ceriello, A. Michael Forgette, and Alyssa Biggs were nominated for their work in The Pillowman (Ceriello and Forgette) and A Flea in Her Ear (Biggs). The ac-
tors performed their chosen scenes for the competition for Kennedy Center judges. None of the UNH actors won, but all who attended the festival had an excellent time, learning much by watching various stages of the scholarship competition, attending workshops, and in networking with actors and tech from schools throughout the region. With the festival over, the winning play, the winners of the acting scholarship, set design award, lighting award, costume award, and numerous oth-
er awards will, in April, be going to the national Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival in Washington, DC. Here, they’ll have the opportunity to compete for even greater scholarships, awards, and earn the prestige and merit they deserve for their hard work. Last year, UNH’s own Jessica Emerson and Emily Gorecki won the regional award for set design for Two Rooms, and traveled with head of the Theater Department Robert Boles to Washington for the national competition.

This spring, the university will be putting on Christopher Durang’s Baby with the Bathwater. The actors in the show will again be eligible for nomination for the Irene Ryan scholarship competition. On Friday I hunkered down in my living room with my boyfriend, roommates, and some of my best friends on campus to watch the Olympic opening ceremony. The opening ceremony of the Olympic Games is probably my favorite part of the entire competition. I love watching the cultural displays of the host country. I love seeing the torch lit. And my personal favorite, the parade of nations, always incorporates incredible costumes and interesting groups. This year was unlike no other…and it wasn’t in a good way. 7:30pm rolled around and I tuned to NBC where the ceremony hadn’t started yet. Instead, they were showing pre Olympic coverage. Saving Spanish for Students

A former secretary of Devonshire Elementary School has filed suit against Charlotte-Mecklenburg School district after being terminated for speaking Spanish to parents. Ana Mateo was hired as a bilingual secretary, a position designed to reach out to students and families that aren’t fluent in English. When a new principal, Suzanne Gimenez, arrived on the scene in 2008, Mateo continued to communicate in Spanish with parents who knew little English, despite Gimenez’s announcement that Spanish could no
longer be spoken in the school. Mateo was fired on Sept. 24, 2008 and the case was referred to the U.S. Justice Department by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. This is an excerpt from the lawsuit: “During September 2008, a Spanish-speaking parent came to the school crying and stating in Spanish that someone at the school had placed a stick in her 7-year-old's buttocks. Mateo asked Ms. Gimenez if she could translate for the parent. Ms. Gimenez refused and told the parent her 7-year-old son could translate. The parent continued to cry and eventually left without having her issue resolved because she could not understand Ms.

Overall, I think NBC covered the Olympic death very well once the ceremony officially started. The Georgian people and the team received appropriate respect and admiration for their fallen comrade. However, I think NBC as a network needs to learn the appropriateness of what is shown on the air. Yes, Tom Brokaw and the other popular journalists want to have their moments, but no one wants to see a luger sail into a steel pole at 88 miles per hour. Schools have a responsibility to teach the citizens of America, and that includes those who haven’t learned to speak English yet. It may be our national language, but it is far from our only one.

Salt and Pepper Shakers are often the staple on every dinner table, but unlike the dishes, these little buggers are hardly ever washed or wiped down. Surprisingly, they contain some of the highest concentrations of germs compared to other items in your house. Sponges are used to wipe off germy surfaces, but they are never disinfected afterwards. Are you washing the dishes or just spreading the germs around? The moral of the story? Wash your hands more often – even when you think you haven’t touched anything infected. However, be careful, sink faucets are notoriously germy places.

A Soda a Day...Can Bring the Cancer Your Way

This week, the AFP Newsroom in Washington reported of a study performed in Singapore that shows a link between drinking soda and developing cancer. Pancreatic cancer is one of the most rapidly fatal cancers in adults, with less than five percent of its patients surviving more than five years after diagnosis. The study reported that people who drink at least two sugary sodas a week have a heightened risk of developing cancer, especially pancreatic cancer, due to the drink’s sugar. This data was analyzed from over 60,000 Chinese adults who drank two or more sugar-sweetened soft drinks a week diet. The study determined that such
individuals were at a greater risk of developing pancreatic cancer compared with individuals who did not. There has not yet been a link found between juice and cancer. While previous studies have only looked at the effects of soda and juice in Europeans and Americans, this study was the first to look at the development of pancreatic cancer in Asians, whose diet and lifestyle are becoming more and more “western”. The study reported that participants not only in Singapore but also in America and Europe who consumed two or more sodas per week tended to be younger men who smoke, eat more red meat, eat higher-calorie diets, drink alcohol, and are less physically active. Although the findings were adjusted for these di-
etary factors that have also been linked with pancreatic cancer, “the adjustments did not change the link between soda and the cancer risk,” said Mark Pereira of the University of Minnesota's division of Epidemiology and Community Health. Pereira told AFP "We suspect sugar is the culprit, but we cannot prove it from this study.” More research will be needed to look into sports drinks and diet sodas. So the lesson learned is slow down, or even stop, your soda intake. Fizzy drinks are the leading source of added sugar in the US diet and are a large contributor to hyperglycemia and high insulin in your blood. The reason sodas can cause pancreatic cancer is because your pancreas produces insulin and helps regulate sugar – get it now?

Tournaments and new fitness programs are exciting additions and improvements to what the Beckerman Recreation Center has to offer students. However, just because more quality activities and equipment are being developed and instituted, doesn’t mean the favored products and services of the past have gone by the way-side. The Beckerman is still happy to offer such things as badminton, jump ropes, and even board games. Want to play racquetball? No problem. Active Minds has participated in the 2009 National Day without stigma and had a member attend the National Active Minds Conference in November in Washington, D.C. They have ‘em And what is with the resale value on books in the campus bookstore: its highway all! So my suggestion would be to go to the C-Store and buy some of your favorite child- robbery! I know it’s not up to the university, but damn you eFollett! I buy a used book hood num-nums and relive the glory days! for around $60-$100 (depending on the book) and then the resale value is 12 bucks! It’s ridiculous! It’s in no worse condition then when I bought it! It’s worse than selling back a car I tell you.

HOLLYWOOD ... In many polls and other announcements, Sandra Bullock has been named the sexiest actress on the screen today. I don’t agree. I do agree she is one of the best actresses out there, but NOT the sexiest. However, everyone has his or her own taste. If you want to know more about her, she was born in Arlington, Va., in 1964. Her mother was a European opera singer, so as a result, Sandra was shuttled around many countries. She attended East Carolina University and later studied at The Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. At the moment, she is at the height of her career, and shuttling between Hollywood and the home she bought in the Garden District of New Orleans. And a sidelight, there’s no telling what color her hair is. She changes that shade to fit the role she is playing, and when not, any color to her liking at the moment. Aside to Richard H. of Amite, La.: I agree. Zsa Zsa was once a “hoot.” Unfortunately, since her car accident, “t’aint” so anymore. She is in a wheelchair, and I’m told the memory is going. As to her “spouse” who calls himself Prince Frederic, we are all awaiting his political capers -- what with his Sunset Boulevard billboard and etc. I’ll keep you posted. And yes, Zsa Zsa did have two sisters, Eva and Magda, both departed. From now on until the big night, it’s all Oscar talk. I just wish organizers could find a way to end all those interminable “thank yous” to mom, dad, grandpa, Aunt Tillie, etc. And I wish something would happen, like the time a naked man ran out of the wings and streaked across the stage. David Niven was the emcee, and he just stood there with his mouth open, so aghast he couldn’t speak. You can bet your booty THAT won’t happen again. Everyone is ever on watch. Meanwhile, let’s look for some more news. At the moment, it won’t be happening on the Sunset Strip, which is being torn up for repairs. Cars are detoured to more quiet routes, so Lindsay and Paris and Britney have no place to romp. We’ll let you know when the nightclub scene opens wide again. Meanwhile, speaking of “opening up,” that’s what Rosie O’Donnell has been doing on several talk shows, showing a softer, less feisty side. And speaking of Paris, she has (for the moment) deserted Hollywood for New York. She and Letterman have definitely settled their differences, and she appeared on The Late Show with lots of hugging and kissing, and a big bunch of red roses given to her by Dave. AND, that short haircut she received in prison all gone, and her hair is once again long, blonde and lovely. And speaking of “hairdos.” All the “gals” wearing those little black nothing dresses use their long, long hair to keep their shoulders warm. BITS ‘N’ PIECES: Oprah Winfrey’s network will be known as OWN. Not bad for a girl from a small town who started out with nothing but “guts and talent” ... One way to get a TV newcaster’s job is to become governor of Alaska and run for vice-president, e.g. Sarah Palin. ... Jane Seymour at the premiere of “Stomp” in black pants and shirt. No “nothing little black dress” for her. ... And finally, joke going around New Orleans is that all the stars who have moved there are going as themselves on Mardi Gras.

The Washington Capitals: Well-Equipped for the Stanley Cup

The resurgence of the Washington Capitals hockey team has been unbelievable thus far. The Capitals hold the best record in the Eastern Conference at 4113 and a total of 89 points under Head Coach Bruce Boudreau. There are so many answers within the Capitals offense fromNicklas Backstrom, Alexander Semin, Mike Green, and Brooks Laich. The player who has not only been the best in the East, but the entire league, is two-time Hart Trophy winner Alexander Ovechkin. He is another Wayne Gretzky due to his versatility and the offensive dominance he possesses. Ovechkin has a total of 42 goals, 47 assists, and
89 points looking to add to his great season Saturday at the Scottrade Center. Moreover, Nicklas Backstrom has earned 26 goals, 49 assists, and 75 points. Alexander Semin earned 29 goals, 34 assists, and 63 points. Mike Knuble earned 21 goals, 19 assists, and 40 points for the Caps. Brooks Laich, also another bright star for the Capitals, has 20 goals with 25 assists and 45 points. The underrated defensive player Mike Green is also a factor for Washington’s success with a total of 14 goals, 44 assists, and 58 points. Even though Jose Theodore is 20-7 on the year and has a “goals against” average of 2.94, the Capitals are going to need another goaltender when the postseason time comes if they want to capture a Stanley Cup Championship. Richmond in Top 25 for First Time in 24 Years

Chris Mooney and the Richmond Spiders set a bunch of goals before the season, including an Atlantic 10 regular-season title and their first NCAA tournament bid in six years. After two road victories last week moved the Spiders into first place in the conference, they accomplished another goal Monday: making the Top 25 for the first time in 24 years. "It's really a significant accomplishment, and we've been very open with our guys about this, that it was something that we wanted to accomplish," said Mooney, in his fifth season in charge. "It's not going to help us beat Fordham, but it's certainly going to make us feel really good and understand we've been recognized in a really, really elite category." In a week when Kansas State climbed to No. 7, its highest ranking in nearly five decades, the Spiders joined the AP poll at No. 25 for the first time since January 1986. It's just the fourth time in school history that the small, private school has been in the poll. The Spiders (20-6, 9-2) host Fordham (2-21, 0-11) on Wednesday night, trying to stretch their winning streak to seven. Last week, they used a late 9-1 run to hand Rhode Island just its fourth loss, 69-67, and
then rolled at St. Bonaventure, 68-49. Mooney doesn't expect the Spiders' new status to be a problem. "We'll see if it changes anything," he said Monday. "We didn't want to hide from it. Bob Dylan has done a lot over the course of his iconic career, but last week he experienced a first. On Feb. 9, Dylan and a cast of fellow musicians performed at “In Performance at the White House: A Celebration of Music From the Civil Rights Movement.” It was Dylan’s first time playing at the capitol, an event hosted by President and Mrs. Obama, the fifth in a series to celebrate American music. Dylan performed his 1964 classic, “The Times They Are A-Changin” as the Obamas sat in the front row with Vice President Joe Biden and his wife,
Jill. Several of Dylan’s old friends also took part; Joan Baez performed “We Shall Overcome” and Smokey Robinson performed “Abraham, Martin and John.” The rest of the cast was composed of Yolanda Adams, John Mellencamp, Natalie Cole, Jennifer Hudson, Freedom Singers, and Blind Boys Alabama. Together, they performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” President Obama spoke at the end, encouraging Americans to lift their voices and sing. This season's Academy Awards elite gathered Monday for the annual nominees luncheon, with table talk ranging from weighty matters such as the war on terror to lighter chatter like what to wear to the big show. Before sharing a meal of poached pear gorgonzola salad, marinated chicken breast and apple tarts, nominees dropped by a news conference to talk about the whirlwind leading to the March 7 Oscar ceremony. Bullock has been considered the front-runner to win best actress for the football drama "The Blind Side" but said didn't take her nomination for granted. "Does anybody expect a nomination? I certainly didn't," said Bullock, an enduring box-office draw who had never before been nominated for an Oscar. "I'm really very amazed and thankful to be here, because I'd like to work hard for another 10, 15 years. So if this is what that means, bring it." Harrelson, a supporting-actor nominee for the homefront war drama "The Messenger," and Jeremy Renner, a best-actor contender for the Iraq war saga "The Hurt Locker," said their roles instilled fresh respect for troops

Roberts’ niece, Emma Roberts) was quite refreshing as a character. It was cute, heartwarming, blunt, clichéd, and surprising. And I recommend it. It’s worth the cost of the ticket, no more, and a good date-night movie if you’re looking for an uncomplicated film that induces easy laughter. I’ll leave it at that. I went into the film expecting not much more than I’ve written here, and was pleasantly surprised. I won’t ruin it for you, like most critics who seek to tear a film apart for their readers, but leave you with this. Those three words that “everyone” wants to hear at the end of Valentines Day: they’re damn hilarious but not for everyone.
