WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women’s volleyball team advanced to the 2012 NCAA Division II Elite Eight Championship with a 3-2 win over Bridgeport on Saturday evening in the NCAA East Region Championship Match. The Chargers advance to the Elite Eight for the 12th time in program history. New Haven won the match by set scores of 25-16, 20-25, 25-13, 20-25 and 18-16. New Haven, which returns to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2008, improves the nation’s best record to 30-1 with its 27th consecutive victory. The Northeast-10 Conference Champion and top-seeded Chargers reach the 30-win plateau for the 20th time in the program’s 37-year history. Second-seeded Bridgeport – the East Coast Conference Champions – ends its season at 27-5. The Purple Knights responded it set two, breaking a 20-20 deadlock by winning the final five points to take a 25-20 decision and knot the match at 1-1. In the third set, the Chargers once again never trailed. New Haven fought off four early ties but, following a 9-9 stalemate, finished the frame on a 16-4 run to earn a 25-13 win and pull within one set of the East Region Championship. Set four was much like the previous frame, though this time it was Bridgeport that claimed the advantage out of an early tie. The Purple Knights put together seven consecutive points in the middle of the frame and never looked back en route to a 25-20 win that pushed the match to a deciding fifth set. For the second straight match, the Chargers found themselves trailing 5-1 in set five and cut the deficit to 8-6 at the turn. New Haven continued the rally to take a 12-11 lead before the Purple Knights won three consecutive points to earn the first match point.
obligation and financial issues. The audience is presented a storyline; after the scene ends, audience members must choose which character whose personality they would like to change the most. After the character is “changed,” the scenario is replayed with the applied changes to see how the situation can be mediated. Before the scene took place, however, the DramaWorks members had the audience stand and do warm up exercises to get everyone more comfortable with each other. The first exercise was called “tune in;” during this exercise, students and faculty had to breathe in deeply. Upon exhaling, they had to release noises relating to how they felt that day. Several individuals expressed sighs of relaxation while others grumbled with frustration. This was a way for participants to set aside their emotions and really become observant of what was going on around them. On the second breath, audience members were
told to try matching their vocals everyone else. By the third and final breath, most voices were in unison and melodically complimented one another. The second exercise was associometric; this required participants to take a stand on a particular issue. The topic involved whether the audience believed big changes would take place in the next few years, and if those changes would drastically alter people’s way of life within the country. Two DramaWorks members stood on either side of the Alumni Lounge, one of them representing “no change” and the other “complete change.” Participants were then asked to stand somewhere on the invisible line separating the two opinions; this reflected their position on the level of change they expected in the near future. Many audience members shifted toward the middle of the line, agreeing that some change would occur but not on such a drastic scale.

As part of the University of New Haven’s 30 Days of Wellness program, the Center for Family Business put on the event titled “How Resilient Are You?” on Tuesday, Nov. 27. Chairs were arranged in a circle around the Alumni Lounge, with four additional chairs at the center of the set up. A videographer documented the presentation. Paul Sessions, the director of the Center for Family Business came forward to introduce DramaWorks Interactive, a company whose members go into organizations and communities to “make the invisible visible.” “We wanted to give something back to the university,” Sessions said. DramaWorks Interactive consists of improvisational actors and actresses who act out a variety of scenes on topics most people do not normally think about, including family

UNH has been awarded a $600,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to boost engineering student retention rates. The five-year grant permits the University’s Tagliatela College of Engineering to participate in A Scholarship Program to Increase Retention in Engineering (ASPIRE), an NSF initiative to increase the retention rate of engineering students, especially those from underrepresented groups and with financial needs. The program will permit the University to provide scholarships to sophomore- and junior-level students who have both financial need and have demonstrated merit. UNH will also award scholarships to community-college transfer students, and provide support services including engineering tutors and mentors to guide the students. “One of the benefits of awarding scholarships to these students is that they will gain confidence and more time to participate in the extracurricular programs, including service, internships and other activities that the college has to offer, reducing the need to work to support their studies,” said Ronald Harichandran, dean of the Tagliatela College. “Our data shows that 85 percent of UNH students need financial aid. However, the university cannot fully meet all of their needs. The average gap between financial aid and what is still needed for engineering students enrolled in 2010-11 was $7,400, which makes it very difficult for students with families – particularly women – to complete their degrees on time.” Many students in the UNH engineering program must work at least part time, the dean noted, and each year more than 20 percent reduce their course load to part time so they can work more hours. Benefits of the program will include allowing some of those students to remain as full time, improving academic performance, allowing students to graduate in a shorter amount of time, and helping students focus more on academics during their sophomore and junior years. “The scholarship program also will encourage students to complete the engineering internship requirement of the college during the summer while they are not taking a full course load,” said Jean NocitoGobel, professor of civil and environmental engineering at UNH and principal investigator on the grant.

USGA President’s Corner
Finals are right around the corner, but so is winter break! December is here and another week of classes has come and gone. This past weekend has proved to be an immensely successful one for our women’s volleyball team. After seizing the Northeast 10 Conference title and winning the NCAA East Region Championship Saturday night, the team has moved on to the Elite Eight. Congratulations to all of the ladies on the volleyball team as they have had a great season. The men’s football team also had a very successful season, clenched the Northeast 10 Conference title and performed greatly in the playoffs. Congratulations to them for a great season that kept fans at the edge of their seats many a game. As finals are creeping up on us faster and faster, be sure you have begun to prepare. A semester of hard work can be altered by a lousy final test grade, so be sure to study hard. If you have any questions for your professors, consult them in their office hours or send them an e-mail. Course evaluations have also been sent out, so ensure you complete these in the most professional manner—they really do count. As for USGA, next semester our meetings will be held on Wednesday afternoons at 1:45 p.m., so if you’ve ever been curious about what it is we actually do, stop by then to let your voice be heard! Is it appropriate for the girl to ask the guy on a date, even though it’s customary that it be done the other way around? -Anonymous I definitely think I should preface this answer with saying that I am extremely oldfashioned when it comes to the world of relationships and all of their technicalities. I believe that it is a great for a girl to know what she wants, and to go after that. However, getting a summer job or an A on a physics test sure differs from confronting a guy and asking him on a date. There are things in life that I feel are better suited for the opposite sex to handle, and I think asking someone out on a date is one of those things. I hardly think that women are incapable of asking men out, or that it’s wrong in anyway. I feel that in most circumstances, it would be fine if a girl asked a guy on a date (my stance has nothing to do with the fact that it’s a woman asking something that has been so quickly associated with men). My point of view, however, deals with men of this generation. Guys today are too often given the easy way out when it comes to most things in life. They grow up being babied by the women in their lives, and they go on to be babied by their girlfriends, who one day baby them so much they are sure they will never meet anyone else like that. Then those women become their wives. Granted, this is not true of every man today, and I know there is a large majority of men out there who work hard to take care of the women in their lives. But then again, if you were talking to one of them, they probably would have asked you out already. I am going to take a stance here, and I am going to say don’t give the guy an easy way out. It is fine to show him that you are interested; in fact, you probably should (because if you haven’t already, maybe that’s why no date has been mentioned), but do not let him get the satisfaction of not even having to ask. You want the relationship to start off on a good foot; dating is something that has sort of diminished over the years, but is so nice. So let it happen. If it never does work out with the guy you’re crushing on right now, wait for the one who can’t wait to take you out, then you’ll know you’ve found something special.

The audience was finally asked, “What is resilience?” Responses ranged everywhere from strong-willed, to confidence and bravery. While these answers all described resilience, DramaWorks revealed that the true meaning of the term was “bouncing back.” In other words, difficult situations arise in life, and a person’s ability to cope with these challenges and “bounce back” from hardships indicates resiliency. To exemplify resiliency, DramaWorks presented a scene involving a college student named Olivia, played by Olivia Holcomb, who was very excited about a permaculture class she was taking at the University of New Haven. When she explains this to her parents (played by Timothy Holcomb and Christine Stevens), they immediately attempt to refocus her attention toward her business degree and taking care of the family’s paper-making business. They cannot seem to fathom how a business major could financially support themselves through farming and agriculture. An argument ensues, and Olivia leaves in a rage. She calls her Uncle Erik and Aunt Susan (played by Erik
Muten and Susan Daniels, respectively) to vent about her parents and their lack of understanding. Her aunt and uncle show compassion toward Olivia and advise her to calmly address the situation again with her parents. The second confrontation does not end well either, and at this point the scene ends. Audience members were then separated into groups and provided with a sheet identifying characteristics of a “victim” and a “navigator.” They were asked to select a character from the aforementioned scene that they would like to change, and give suggestions as to how this could be achieved using the characteristics listed on the sheet. The “changed” scene involved Olivia bringing her father to the university and showing him the garden used by the permaculture class in developing new ways of sustainability. After experiencing this with Olivia, her father appears to be more accepting of her involvement with permaculture in conjunction with business. Fast forward to a year later, and the family’s business is on the verge of collapse. Olivia’s mother and father may have to sell the house, but Olivia wants to have a college
graduation party. This second scene again ends in argument and the audience is left to determine which character they would like to change. In the end, the parents and daughter come to a compromise; Uncle Erik and Aunt Susan host the graduation party. Meanwhile, Olivia uses her knowledge in sustainability and permaculture to bring new ideas to her family’s paper-making company, preventing it from going bankrupt. The changes and obstacles that the family faced show the importance of resiliency in life, and how being able to adapt to change is necessary to move forward and experience new things. Attendees were exposed to real-life situations that they normally would not think about, and the overall performance made these topics relatable to the average student and their families. The message resonating from this presentation was made clear as Muten said, “We’re all authors of the stories of our lives.”
UNH and Yale University will be working with the U.S. attorney general on a project to reduce gang and gun violence in Connecticut’s cities. The program, announced by Attorney General Eric Holder, U.S. Attorney David Fein and Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy last Tuesday, will initially focus on New Haven, Bridgeport and Hartford. Dubbed Project Longevity, the program will be funded with federal, state and local funds and is based on a model that has been successful in reducing gun violence in multiple neighborhoods across the country. This will be the first time the strategy is being implemented statewide. Project Longevity uses a strategy that has shown violence can be reduced dramatically when community members and law enforcement join together to directly engage with these groups and clearly communicate a community message against violence, a law enforcement message about the consequences of further violence and an offer of help for those who want it. To accomplish this, law enforcement, social service providers and community members are recruited, assembled and trained to engage in a sustained relationship with violent groups. “Project Longevity will send a powerful message to those who would commit violent crimes targeting their fellow citizens that such acts will not be tolerated and that help is available for all those who wish to break the cycle of violence and gang activity,” said Holder.
“On the state level, I have directed my administration to focus our criminal justice resources on urban violence,” Malloy said. “We agree that no strategy will be effective without the support of the community. This means parents, clergy, neighborhood leaders, grandmothers, grandfathers, aunts, uncles – everyone working toward one goal. We are working to regain the trust of the African American and Latino communities. We need their help. The lives of these young people are too valuable not to act.” “After more than a year of hard work and preparation by so many public and private partners, I am pleased to announce Project Longevity, our statewide anti-violence initiative,” said U.S. Attorney Fein. “Many dedicated people and organizations have come together to support this proven strategy to reduce gang and gun violence through focused deterrence.” Project Longevity is based on the Group Violence Reduction Strategy developed by the Center for Crime Prevention and Control at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York. The research behind the strategy, first implemented in Boston as “Operation Ceasefire” in the mid-1990s, has found that violence in troubled neighborhoods is caused predominantly by a small number of people who are members of street gangs, drug crews and other identified groups. These groups, whose members typically constitute less than a half a percent of a city’s population, often have little organization, hierarchy or common purpose, and commit violent acts primarily for personal reasons, not to achieve any economic
gain or other advantage. The Group Violence Reduction Strategy, which also has been deployed in areas of Chicago, Cincinnati, Providence, R.I., and elsewhere, has resulted in a 40 to 60 percent reduction in group-related homicides in certain neighborhoods. The Rev. William Mathis, a UNH adjunct professor, has been appointed as Project Longevity’s New Haven program manager. Mathis is the pastor of Springs of Life-Giving Water Church in New Haven, an attorney and a former prosecutor. As program manager, he is responsible for developing effective and sustainable working relationships between law enforcement, service providers and community members to insure Project Longevity’s success. UNH and Yale will work with law enforcement to collect and analyze crime data and provide research support to identify the groups and individuals that will be contacted through Project Longevity said John DeCarlo, associate professor of criminal justice at UNH. Many of these individuals are already known to law enforcement and/ or are under the supervision of probation or parole officers. Other participating Justice Department agencies in Project Longevity include the FBI; Drug Enforcement Administration; the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; and the U.S. Marshals Service. News of the partnership appeared in the Houston Chronicle, Seattle Post Intelligencer, New Haven Register and Hartford Courant, among other regional and national media outlets.

The $100,000 donated by Yale will fund books of all genres, from non-fiction to poetry. Now that West Haven public schools will have access to a whole new variety of books, this will be the chance to improve their students’ reading abilities. In 2007, Yale University purchased the Bayer Healthcare Complex and founded West Campus. Since then, Yale has invested more than $1 million in the city of West Haven, with the determination to reach
out and improve the West Haven community. Neil Cavallaro commented, “Yale administrators have been very generous to us. When they purchased West Campus, they made it clear that they wanted to be a part of our community. We hope it continues for a long, long time.” It was said that Yale’s donation will fund programs such as the Daily 5, which is a West Haven elementary school program in which students rotate positions throughout five different reading activity stations, such as “read to self” and “listen to reading.” Daily 5 allows teachers to work with individuals or small groups, showing the students that they are not learning alone, which will benefit and help them in the long run.

Yale University in New Haven, Conn., made the decision that they want to help contribute to nearby schools to improve local education. They announced on Tuesday that they would invest $100,000 in West Haven public schools. West Haven school administrators are very grateful for the University’s investment. This $100,000 will mainly fund reading materials for elementary school students. A smaller portion of the funding will go toward purchasing computer and Smart Board software. West Haven Public Schools Superintendent Neil Cavallaro stated, “Improving early literacy is one of the most important items on the district’s agenda. It is very difficult for thirdgrade students behind their appropriate reading

He liked the fact that students work on “real world” research projects often involving their own companies, to apply what they are learning in the classroom directly to the business world. “For me, at this stage of my career, a traditional approach of stand-alone courses was not appealing to me,” he said. And, Bethel notes, he likes that the “classroom” is actually a corporatestyle board room located at 900 Chapel Street in downtown New Haven overlooking the Green. “As odd as it seems, I am very familiar with being in board rooms, so this setting breeds familiarity. It also facilitates an interactive learning style much more than what I remem-
ber from the traditional campus-based classroom setting.” For Susan Marino, a 25-year employee of Hartford Hospital, the Executive MBA program was a logical next step in a career that began with direct patient care, progressed to patient care management and now involves, as the hospital’s director of clinical informatics, working to use technology to transform all documentation at the hospital into electronic records for everything from patient records to radiology testing to time keeping records for employees. Her life, however, is jam-packed. “I also support the central staffing office with a float pool of 160 RNs,” she says. And she has a husband and two daughters, a 19-year old
in her first year of college in Boston and a 13-year old eighth grader. Marino also helps take care of her parents, which has lately been time consuming since her mother has been ill. UNH’s Executive MBA schedule is one of the key factors that appealed to her, she says. The class schedule is Friday afternoon and all day Saturday once every three weeks. “The way the whole program is set up is absolutely a bonus for me,” Marino says. “I don’t lose a whole day of work and I can be in the classes and really focus.”

There are also many rules regarding mirrors, and how they can create both positive and negative ch’i. “Never place a mirror directly in front of your bed,” warns DeRobertis. “You never want to see yourself when you’re sleeping,” and create a double of you. However, if your desk faces a wall, she strongly suggests placing a mirror on the wall in front of it to double what you see and remedy the fact that your back is facing the door. Cardinal directions play an essential role in determining good Feng Shui, some directions being bet-
ter than others for certain pieces of furniture. The magnetic compass was originally invented for Feng Shui and has been used ever since; the north is attributed with change, the south with fame, the east with the future and the west with youth. With respect to these facts, it may be helpful to place powerful objects in the south corner of your room, a study section in the east sector, or even a bed in the southeast, which is attributed with romance. The placement of the bed in a room is a key; you want this to be as far away from the door as possible. There should also be much space around your bed, meaning it should not be placed against any walls. You should also be able to see the door from your line of sight while lying in bed without having to turn around. If your back does happen to face the door, a mirror can be placed to counter that. Feng Shui is to some an art form for good health, and to others just a vague process based on inventive ideas. Either way, it never hurts to freshen up a space, especially for the spring semester.

Most college students fill their rooms to the max with mementos in the form of pictures, posters, notes and ticket stubs from movies or concerts. However, furniture and decoration is never thought to have a deeper meaning beside its arrangement. Too many people, however, the position of furniture is thought to create positive or negative effects on one’s life, and is interpreted through the Chinese art of “Feng Shui.” This term translates to “wind-water” and originated from Chinese astronomy. On Tuesday, Nov. 27, as part of November’s 30 Days of Wellness Program, Lynne DeRobertis and her sister Susan Federico put together a program on this ancient art rooted in mysticism for UNH students. How to destress one’s life through room arrangements was one of the first topics discussed. Jar Jar. Prequels. MidiChlorians. All of these phrases are triggers to incite a riot from a hardcore Star Wars fan. Now, a new word has been added to the list: Disney. For those of you not caught up, George Lucas sold all of Lucasfilms operating business, including Industrial Light and Magic and Skywalker Sound, to Disney. What does this mean? Disney now owns the rights to Star Wars. As a result, Disney has announced the arrival of the 7th installment to the franchise to be released in 2015. While this move has made many happy, some Star Wars fans are infuriated by the deal. Here’s why Disney buying Lucasfilms is good news for the Star Wars franchise. Fun fact: what do Pixar, Star Wars, and Marvel Comics all have in common? They are all owned by Disney. While many fans are taking the route of saying Disney will make the films childish and dumbed down, did
you see Mickey Mouse fighting alongside the Avengers this summer? Did Donald Duck show up in Toy Story 3? No, that’s ridiculous. Just because Disney is infamous for their appeal to children, it doesn’t mean that’s all the company is interested in. If anything, it seems that it’s the opposite, as in the past few years we have seen more films that stray from a stereotypical “Disney” film. Disney respects their creators and doesn’t interfere with their projects. If that was the case, the Avengers would have been a completely different film. But it wasn’t, because Disney sat back and supported Joss Whedon instead of meddling with his vision. The bottom line: whoever ends up directing Episode VII will be able to create a film that appeals to all ages, and make it the way they envision it. Now here’s the reason to be excited: Star Wars is a legendary franchise, and directors would fight for the ability to direct it. Being able to direct Episode VII would be a dream come true for any director, and Disney will have
no trouble assembling a dream team to make this film. In fact, they have already hired Michael Arndt to write the screenplay (Arndt has also written Toy Story 3 and Little Miss Sunshine). Actors, directors and anyone else in Hollywood will all be fighting for a chance to be involved in Episode VII. Lastly, let’s not kid ourselves folks; Lucas hasn’t exactly done the franchise justice recently. Why, even the best of the saga (Episode V) wasn’t directed by him. Yes, Lucas created Star Wars. However, he is not solely responsible for its success and whether it will be good. With the lukewarm quality of the prequels, a new director and story may be exactly what the franchise needs to feel fresh and re-kindle the Star Wars love. So sit down geeks, take a few chill pills, and take some deep breaths. The Star Wars franchise is in good hands, and you have nothing to worry about. Calm down; keep telling yourself that Mickey won’t be in the new movie, and that Disney will make everything alright.

In contrast, I found two of the songs quite creepy. “Over Again” and “Little Things” are described by three words: eerie, dreary, and creepy. The anonymous male put it best when he said, “I don’t like this song.” I could not agree more. “Over Again” is a breakup song, while “Little Things” seems to have the exact same lyrics and message as “What Makes You Beautiful.” Apparently, to get some with this boy band you need to have incredibly horrendous confidence. One Direction’s new album has a bit of everything. I found some great songs, some horrible songs, and a wide variety of mediocre songs. Regardless of how I feel about each song, they all will be stuck in my head for a very long time.

Addiction: a nine-letter word that can mean a whole lot more. People joke about “needing” a certain fix, but some addictions shouldn’t be taken lightly. The recent and ever so popular Twilight Saga came to a close this month with the release of the final movie, much to the same remorse as when the Harry Potter series ended. Lives were changed. Granted, this addiction to a fictional series is not as bad as an addiction to drugs or alcohol, but personally, I’d rather be addicted to Nutella. I was never much of a Twilight fan, but I am still, a Harry Potter fiend. I mean who didn’t want to go to Hogwarts? I would much rather date a wizard than a vampire, but that fantasy faded and I remain outside Hogwarts looking in and accepting of the fact I will never cast a spell. People live vicariously through the characters
they watch in movies and television shows or read in books, so when the characters’ lives end, do theirs? For some, yes. There is a line between fandom and obsession. Yes, books, shows and movies are a method of escapism, and it’s okay to indulge yourself in a fantasy, but it is not healthy to develop a certain dependence on the fictional worlds. Women in general tend to get attached to the male figures in these movies or books because they are created to be the “perfect” gentleman that any women would die to have. When they can’t find that man in the real world, or their man just isn’t living to their unrealistic standards, they fall in love with the characters instead. This may sound ridiculous, but yes all of us have fallen (or thrown ourselves) at fictional characters that make it impossible to find the perfect, real significant other. You wait for the final chapter in a book and the closing scene of a movie that gives the aloof rep-
resentation that everyone will finally end up happily ever after. So in comparison to your own life, you expect everything will work out and that you too will end happily ever after. However, there is a life after Cinderella rides off into the sunset with her new prince. You read faster to get to the end sooner, but why race to the end, when you always are wanting of more? On the positive side, all the curiosity the audience had about how the Twilight saga would end can now be settled since their questions have been answered. But that is not the case for Lost fans who will forever be held emotionally frustrated in a lurch. For some to ease this pain, they will find another series to obsess over, perhaps Fifty Shades of Grey or The Mortal Instruments. For others, they will have to face reality and live the life they were given.

How can you not love that bromance? These two were from different worlds, but they came together by a bond of friendship and the wrath of Mr. Feeny. Oh yes, who couldn’t forget Mr. Feeny and his words of wisdom? Also, who couldn’t forget Mr. Feeny’s love and hate relationship with the young Matthews brothers, Eric and Cory. He was the best neighbor, teacher, principal and professor anyone could have. Or he could have just been a very creepy old man who followed the kids throughout their lives. I’ll go with the first. The Nathan Ward Band: Classics Are Revived
Matthews in the original series is being brought back. Also, his lovely wife Topanga Matthews, play by Danielle Fishel, is on board for being in the sequel. No other cast members from the original series have been asked yet, but Rider Strong, who played Cory’s best friend Shawn Hunter, has stated that he has not been asked yet. He also said that he wishes not to be a part of it, because the television show should focus on Cory and Topanga’s daughter rather than the return of all original cast members. So let’s hope that he’ll at least make a guest appearance along with the original cast members, especially Mr. Feeny. Another person returning to the new series, who was also in the original series, is Michael Jacobs, the co-creator and producer of the original show. He will serve as executive producer in the new series and show runner as well. Disney is expected to film its first pilot in February 2013. Casting has been sent out to find 13-year-old Riley Matthews, her older brother Elliot Matthews, and her best friend Maya who has a troubled past.

A Message from the Editor... It’s been an interesting year here at the Charger Bulletin! As you may have noticed, many changes have been instituted in the last few issues, the most important being the creation of new editor positions which have been taken up by four dedicated members of our staff. I think the most noticeable difference has been the makeover of our sports page (and I promise you this has nothing to do with Liana or I.) It sure has helped having someone who actually understands sports dictate the page, and Tyler D’amore has taken it to another level. I couldn’t be more pleased to see a page with sports jargon I don’t understand, although it makes it very
difficult for us to edit. Did you know there is such a thing as a field goal in basketball? Don’t judge me. Furthermore, there are some very noticeable changes in other sections of this issue. This has been hailed as “The Entertainment Issue” for no other reason than that Entertainment Editors Cameron Hines and Katerina Sperl have created so much valuable content this week that we had no choice but to expand to four pages! This week you may also notice an absence of editorial content by Liana and I. Nadine Northway, our Opinions Editor has worked around the clock to get the UNH student voice represented in the
paper. I sincerly hope that you enjoy the interesting stories and opinions on this page and others, but moreso I hope that you recognize the hardwork and dedication of the Charger Bulletin staff who are working harder than ever, despite us inching closer and closer to finals, in order to create news and entertainment for your enjoyment. College Boys and Their Feelings

I am tired of boys telling me they do not want to date but then I am not allowed to talk to anyone else. If you are going to tell me you do not want a relationship with me at all, then you cannot get mad when I dance with other guys at the club, or cuddle with other guys or even talk to anyone else. Exhibit A: This one kid I was talking to told me he wanted nothing to do with a relationship. I thought we were just hooking up but he would always say “come cuddle, it’s cold” or “I can’t sleep without cuddling with you first”. About a week later he went crazy. He started making it so that I could not talk to friends of mine that were also his friends whenever he was around. I talked to them eventually and they all told me it was because he thought I had too many feelings for him. My friend and I found this incredibly funny because the entire time we were assuming he had feelings for me. After we explained to his friends that he was being crazy, they talked to him and he decided that we could be friends again and start hooking up again. I just went with it
and then he started being weird again for no reason. He started completely ignoring me, and blocked me on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. I do not know why he was ever mad but basically he is just crazy and needs a chill pill. Exhibit B: Another kid I was talking to also told me he did not want a relationship either. Again I thought it was safe to assume we were just hooking up. One day while sitting on his bed with him I got a text from my cousin Mike. A few minutes later my phone vibrated again and he handed it to me and said “Who is it, Mike”? I checked and it was my friend Jake instead. When I told him this he told me I had too many guys in my life. Thinking he was kidding I only responded that I did not and moved on. The next day he was not talking to me as much as usual and as a joke I told him he should sleep with my roommate because she seemed uptight and had not hooked up with anyone since she had gotten here. He did not take it as a joke, and he got really mad at me. He then proceeded to tell my roommate I had STDs. The sad thing is I am tested for that monthly be-
cause of a health issue. I had just been tested a few days prior and was clearly clean. After his incredibly elaborate story about it to my roommate she told me that I should be worried about having an STD and get it checked out. When I told her I was just tested, she texted him and he decided to tell her it was all very obviously a joke. However, obviously you do not go into that much detail with a joke. A few days later when he decided he wanted to talk to me again I told him I was angry about the situation. He told me he was mad at my roommate for even telling me when he was clearly joking. He still tries now to be friends after that, but I am not okay with people starting rumors that I have STDs. Basically, guys are stupid and need to make up their minds. If you want to talk to me, do not be dumb or annoying. If you like me, that is fine. If you do not, that is fine too. Just be clear and do not stop me from talking to other people if you do not tell me it is not okay to talk to them.

Life of a UNH Party Girl

I am one of those girls who go out every night of every weekend. Sleep until five p.m., have some dinner, and go back out. I am here to share the stupid things that people do at the clubs from the fights to the awkward dancing and everything in between. My friend is one of those people who cannot dance. We have all seen them. The boys who just move their hips from side to side like they are hip popping a friend of theirs next to them. But my favorite is when you are dancing with someone who you really did not care to be dancing with in the first place and they decide it would be a nice idea to start daggering. That is when I step away and get another drink. The fights are always
fun too. These guys just casually stroll into the club and literally just as they get through the door past the guy who collects the money, they start wailing on someone. They basically start a mosh pit right near the exit and I am just standing there like uhhhhhhh…….. So I decide to back up to the wall, but do not worry someone spilled my drink anyway. The security guards all run over authoritatively and try to pull the three or so guys apart. Then they really freak out and start punching security. Always a good way to not to get kicked out. It took about two minutes to break up the fight and one of my favorite security guards lost his hat and is now in a cast. I still do not know how the fight started. The clothing some people wear to the clubs makes my night. Last
Friday night a girl showed up wearing a long flowing dress that I would have worn when I was ten. Any guy who danced with her just looked confused because she was trying to salsa and they were trying to get laid. Finally this guy’s friend saves him but then starts dancing with the girl and they both were dancing all fancy and I just sat on the couch confused and staring. I hate to laugh at other people’s misfortune but… This one girl had no neck. It went face, then chest. I could not help myself. Because of its length, this touching piece will occur in two installments, followed by commentary from a UNH student.
As a combat veteran wounded in one of America’s wars, I offer to speak for those who cannot. Were the mouths of my fallen front-line friends not stopped with dust, they would testify that life revolves around honor. In war, it is understood that you give your word of honor to do your duty – that is – stand and fight instead of running away and deserting your friends. When you keep your word despite desperately desiring to flee the screaming hell all around, you earn honor. Earning honor under fire changes who you are. The blast furnace of battle burns away impurities encrusting your soul. The white-hot forge of combat hammers you into a hardened, purified warrior willing to die rather than break your work to friends – your honor. Combat is scary but exciting. You never feel so alive as when being shot at without result. You never feel so triumphant as when shooting back – with result. You never feel love so pure as that burned into your heart by friends willing to die to keep their word to you. And they do. The biggest sadness if your life is to see friends falling. The biggest surprise of your life is to survive the war. Although still alive on the outside, you are dead inside – shot thru the heart with nonsensical guilt for living while friends died. The biggest lie of your life torments you that you could have done something more, different, to save them. Their faces are the tombstones in your
weeping eyes, their souls shine the true camaraderie you search for the rest of your life but never find. You live a different world now. You always will. Your world is about waking up night after night silently screaming, back in battle. Your world is about your best friend bleeding to death in your arms, howling in pain for you to kill him. Your world is about shooting so many enemies the gun turns red and jams, letting the enemy grab you. Your world is about struggling hand-to-hand for one more breath of life. You never speak of your world. Those who have seen combat do not talk about it. Those who talk about it have not seen combat. You come home but a grim ghost of he who so lightheartedly went off to war. But home no longer exists. That world shattered like a mirror the first time you were shot at. The splintering glass of everything you knew fell at your feet, revealing what was standing behind it – grinning death – and you are face-to-face, nose-to-nose with it! The shock was so great that the boy you were died of fright. He was replaced by a stranger who slipped into your body, a MAN from the Warrior’s World. In that savage place, you give your word of honor to dance. This suicidal waltz is known as: “doing your duty.” You did your duty, survived the dance, and returned home. Nut not all of you came back to the civilian world. Your heart and mind are still in
the Warrior’s World, far beyond the Sun. They will always be in the Warrior’s World/ they will never leave, they are buried there. In that hallowed home of honor, life is about keeping your word. People in the civilian world, however, have no idea that life is about keeping your word. They think life is about ballgames, backyards, barbecues, babies and business. The distance between the two worlds is as far as Mars from earth. As a combat veteran wounded in one of America’s wars, I offer to speak for those who cannot. “Face-lickers” or Something Along Those Lines

I never thought there was not enough security on campus but then it slowly became clear to me that I did not feel completely safe. When you open the door and someone’s waiting to get let in or is right behind you, you are obviously not going to close the door in their face because that would be rude. When does it become unsafe to be letting people into the building? I first started being a bit weary of the security when my dad was let into the building. I was taking a nap and ended up sleeping through my alarm for an appointment I had. So he gets let into the building and comes to knock on my door to wake me. He says to me, “Why do people let some strange middle aged man into the building? I obviously do not live in a college dorm. That cannot be safe.” I understood where he was coming from but I was not necessarily alarmed. About two weeks ago, I was coming home from downtown around midnight or 1 a.m. and my friend and I were some of the only few people on the shuttle. Other than us, there were three boys and one of them was really drunk and did not seem to understand personal space. He kept trying to touch my leg and talk to me and I was not okay with that. I stood up on the bus and jumped over the seats to get away from him and he seemed to get the message after that. Once we got off the bus we ran to our building to avoid him talking to us again. We got in, closed the door, made sure we heard it lock, and went up the elevator and ran to my room. I do not know how he knew we went to my building or how he knew what floor we were on but somehow he got into the building and found us on the third floor. He started opening random doors in our hallway and looking for us. He did not knock, he just kept attempting to open them and if they were locked he
continued to another door. He got to my suitemate’s door and opened it and I heard a commotion so I ran into her room and saw him trying to make out with her. Since she was not interested in kissing him, her mouth was closed, so he just proceeded to lick her face. She was shaking her head no, pushing him off, and he told her “No, no, it’s sweet!” When I got in there I pulled him off of her and tried to get him out of our room but he tried to tell me kissing her against her will was sweet and went to go back to it. At that point I was much more angry than before so I pushed him out the door and locked it and told him to get out of the building a few hundred times. I checked out the peephole and saw him standing there trying to open more doors so I went to my room to find my mace and lock my bedroom door before he could wake up my roommate. As soon as I got to the door he was already trying to open it so I screamed no and slammed it in his face. I stood staring out the peephole for a good minute or two to make sure he was leaving and he was not. Much to my dismay, my mace was missing. I opened the door, walked outside and told him to leave before I called the police. He proceeded to tell me he was just looking for his friend and I said “Your friend doesn’t live here, he isn’t in this building. Leave or I’m calling the police right now.” He decided it might be a good idea to leave so he walked into the common room. I had a strange feeling he was not actually leaving. I walked into the common room and looked through the window to the other hallway and he, of course, was in there trying to open their doors as well. I found him and was shouting that he had to leave and he ended up doing so. The next day when I was talking to people about it, he apparently went down the hall, asked to use someone’s bathroom, and left their room

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) scored all 20 of her points in the first half as the University of New Haven women’s basketball team built a lead at Le Moyne on Saturday, and Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) added 11 of her team-high 21 points in the second frame as the Chargers held off the host Dolphins to claim an 8072 victory. With the win, New Haven improves to 4-3 overall with a 3-1 Northeast-10 tally. Le Moyne falls to 2-4 on the season and 1-1 in conference action. Moore’s 21 points came on 8-for-14 shooting with a pair of three-pointers. Bradford went 8-for-12 with three treys to net 20 for the second time in her career. Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, Mass./Holy Name) added 15 points, and Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) fell one point shy of her third consecutive double-double with nine points and a game-high
12 rebounds. Rykema Stone (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) scored eight, Nikita Reddy (Germantown, Md./Germantown) had three and Ashley LeBlanc (Methuen, Mass./ Methuen) and Elizabeth Cruso (Westerly, R.I./ Westerly) netted two points apiece. The Chargers shot a season-high 47.1 percent from the field (32-for-68) with seven three-pointers (7-for-21, 33.3 percent) and a 9-for12 (75 percent) showing at the free throw line. Bradford and Reddy each distributed five assists. Hayes blocked two shots and had four of the Chargers’ seven steals. New Haven won the battle under the boards with a 42-39 rebounding edge, and the Dolphins held a 15-12 advantage in turnovers. Le Moyne’s Maggie Brown led all players with 22 points. The Chargers never trailed in the game; Tran scored the first bucket of the contest and, after a Brown jumper, Moore converted the layup that ultimately gave New Haven the lead for good at 4-2 just 89 seconds into play. Moore’s basket also started a 12-2 run that
spotted the Chargers’ a double-digit advantage, and New Haven finished the half on another run – ceding just two field goals over the final 7:09 to head into the locker room with a 54-32 lead. The lead grew as large as 24 points, and stood at 23 – 67-44 – with 14:43 remaining in the second half before the home team started to rally. Le Moyne poured in the next 18 points over a span of 8:02, trimming the margin to five points before Tran ended the drought with a jumper. The margin briefly shrank to a single possession at 69-66 with just over six minutes to go, but the New Haven offense would not lose its stroke again and held off the Dolphins to leave Syracuse with an 80-72 victory. The Rams pulled off a stunner against a good 49ers team. Nobody should count out the Rams just yet. Look for them to defeat an up-and-down Bills team in a close game.

The season keeps getting worse for the Eagles. They have lost eight straight games, many key players are injured and they sit in last place of the NFC. Meanwhile, the Bucs have been playing decent football and should win this matchup. They sit one game out of a playoff spot.
Atlanta Falcons @ Carolina Panthers
The Falcons continue to show they are one of the best, if not the best, team in the NFL. They avenged their only loss of the season against the Saints and clinched the NFC South. The Panthers continue to struggle in all aspects. Expect a blowout by the Falcons in Charlotte.
Kansas City Chiefs @ Cleveland Browns
The Chiefs are coming off an emotional win over the Panthers. Despite that win, the Chiefs are playing a Browns team that has been playing well the entire season. This game may be close, but the Browns should come out on top.
San Diego Chargers @ Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers picked up a much needed win last week against the Ravens. If Charlie Batch can repeat his performance, or if Big Ben comes back, then the Steelers should roll over a Chargers team that hasn’t gotten anything going all season.
Tennessee Titans @ Indianapolis Colts
Andrew Luck proved again Sunday that he is a top-notch rookie. He led the Colts to a last second touchdown in their win over the Lions. The Titans haven’t played well the last two weeks, but should challenge Luck and the Colts.
New York Jets @ Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jets have some new life after beating Arizona last week. Mark Sanchez was benched in the win. The team could use the momentum from the win and build a winning streak. The Jags look improved, but they still have a lot of work to do on both sides of the ball.

WORCESTER, Mass. – The University of New Haven women’s basketball team took its first NE10 loss of the season on Wednesday, falling at No. 24 Assumption, 84-66. Aquillin Hayes (Harlem, N.Y./Wings Academy) posted her second consecutive double-double for the Chargers. The loss evens the Chargers’ overall record at 3-3 with a 2-1 Northeast-10 mark. The nationally-ranked Greyhounds remain perfect at 6-0 on the season and 4-0 in conference action. Hayes, who has recorded a double-double in both games in which she has played this season, netted 14 points with a game-high 10 rebounds. Anh-Dao Tran (Webster, Mass./Holy Name) led the Chargers with 15 points and reigning Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week Briana Bradford (Waterbury, Conn./Holy Cross) had 12. Ashley LeBlanc (Methuen, Mass./ Methuen) also reached double figures with 10 of New Haven’s 23 bench points. Rounding out the offensive effort were Nikita Reddy (Germantown,
Md./Germantown) with five points, Lauren Hebert (North Reading, Mass./ North Reading) with four and two points apiece from Rykema Stone (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy), Elizabeth Cruso (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) and Ayana Duncanson (Elmont, N.Y./Francis Lewis). Cruso and Duncanson were both making their season debuts. Bria Moore (West Haven, Conn./Hill Regional Career) dished out a teamhigh four assists. New Haven was bested on the boards, 48-40, and lost the turnover battle by a 17-15 margin. The Chargers made more field goals than the Greyhounds, shooting 24-of-69 (34.8 percent) to Assumption’s 23-of-63 (36.5 percent) clip. But the home team held a clear advantage at the free throw line, going 32-for-39 (82.1 percent) compared to New Haven’s 14-of-18 (77.8 percent) day at the stripe. Assumption got a game-high 26 points off the bench from Gabrielle Gibson, while Tafanie Roye neared a doubledouble with 13 points and a team-best nine rebounds. The Greyhounds built an early six-point lead at 11-5 and the margin held to a 15-9 score at
the 13:15 mark in the first half. But a pair of free throws and a layup from Hayes followed by a Stone bucket knotted the score, and Hebert sank one-of-two at the stripe to give New Haven what proved to be its only lead of the evening at 16-15. Following an 18-18 deadlock, Assumption went on the lone extended run of the period. The home team netted the next 15 points as the Chargers were scoreless for a span of 5:20 en route to falling behind, 33-18. A Tran jumper ended the drought and New Haven chiseled the deficit back below double figures with the final six tallies of the period, heading into the intermission trailing, 3324. The Chargers started the second with 10 of the first 15 points, capped by a Reddy three-pointer that cut the Assumption lead to 38-34 with 17:40 to go. But the Greyhounds scored the next five points, and New Haven was never closer than three possessions for the remainder of the game. When the buzzer sounded, the margin was its largest at 18 points in an 84-66 decision.
Chicago Bears @ Minnesota Vikings
The Bears were upset last week by the Seahawks. They should bounce back nicely against a Vikings team that looked like a playoff caliber team two weeks ago, but has since lacked effort. Back-to-back losses by the Vikings make this game a mustwin. The Bears won their matchup two weeks ago and should easily win again.
Miami Dolphins @ San Francisco 49ers
The 49ers were taken down by the feisty Rams last week and need to rebound in order to gain momentum heading into the playoffs. Miami has lost four of five, but played the Patriots to a good game. Look for Miami to do the same against the 49ers; however, expect the 49ers to win.
Arizona Cardinals @ Seattle Seahawks

The Lions lost a heartbreaker to the Colts in the final minute last Sunday. This game should be close as the Packers jockey for a playoff position and the Lions try and play spoiler. This should be an entertaining game on Sunday Night Football.

and Kelley Reilly as a fellow substance abuser. But the actor who shines most is John Goodman who plays Whitaker’s drug dealer. Though his time on screen is brief, Goodman steals the entire movie with his drug-induced antics. While the acting is there though, the writing is where this movie stumbles. We are being constantly submitted to Whitaker’s drinking, but they never explore why he is an alcoholic. It simply shows him as having a problem and needing to change it. It would have been nice if the movie
had more story to it, but it really just focuses on his present situation and nothing else. It has one central conflict, but it never grows besides that. However, while the movie does stumble, it is overall a solid bit of filmmaking, and it’s nice to see Zemeckis leaving behind his motion-capture days of filmmaking. While I can’t strongly recommend the movie, it is still an enjoyable movie flick that won’t leave you dissatisfied that you saw it.

This is the core of this movie: these two characters and their interactions with each other as they both try and get their lives back on track. Bradley Cooper is excellent, as we really see his fragility and wildness in his mood swings. However, the real star is Lawrence, as she shines as the struggling girl trying to recover from the death of her husband. Lawrence is absolutely mesmerizing, believable, vulnerable and funny. She’s everything her character should be and more. They both have so much chemistry, and it’s tantalizing to see them on the screen together.

Director David O. Russell was inspired to make this movie because his son also suffers from bipolar disorder, and he has truly created a film that explores how the disorder affects not only the afflicted, but also those around the person trying to help. It’s not often that a movie comes out of Hollywood that feels as fresh and unique as Silver Linings Playbook. But that’s exactly what this movie is: it’s original, it’s emotional, delicate and overall one of the best movies of the year. It’s so ambitious in its design that it completely breaks conventions of other movies of its genre and creates an emotional ride. You truly do not know where it will go. I can’t recently recall a movie-going experience where I was as engrossed and moved as this one, and it’s a film that will resonate in my mind for a while.

Walking Sideways By Shannon Livewell

My pick of the week has to be Walking Sideways, a four-piece rock band from Long Island, N.Y. Fellow classmate Deanna Devivo, who works for PopCore Entertainment and represents artists such as Walking Sideways, Charlie Dane and many more, brought this band to my attention. I took one listen to their tracks and was immediately hooked. Their music resembles a mix between Daughtry, Stone Temple Pilots and the Goo Goo Dolls. The main way to make a name for yourself in today’s industry is to develop a strong fan base. Walking Sideways has been playing many local shows in New York and developing loyal fans along the way. It is clear that they are striving to find a nitch in the world of alternative, hard rock.
Their songs focus on a mix of grungy verses with mainstream hooks, which leave them with a dynamic sound in all of the tracks they record. They are a band full of strong musicians; Erik Hagedorn (the main vocalist and guitar player) has a pure sounding voice and puts so much emotion in each song. Joe Brown on guitar plays amazing progressions that follow the main melody set by Hagedorn. Justin Cellini on bass compliments the song structure by adding depth with every note he plays, and Chris Ciccone helps turn every piece from an acoustic ballad to an edgy rock song with his solid drum skills. ingsideways. If you are into mainstream alternative rock, then this band is for you. Their songs are not representing your typical rock track. They back their powerful lyrics with catchy melodies, which are full of emotion. It says a lot when a band sets out to make music that makes a listener feel emotion, rather than just something that people play to pass the time while driving. This band is definitely going places, and is full of potential. With their solid chord progressions, meaningful lyrics and loyal fan base, there is no doubt in my mind that they will be huge by next year. If I were you, I’d go see a show or two before they start getting sold out!
CB: “Lady Madonna” is extremely catchy, and you hold out the end notes a bit longer than in the original. Do you have any formal voice training? NW: I actually copy how Paul does it live now. I don’t, no. CB: In the slight changes that you do make in your versions of the songs, are the changes an easy decision to make or a long process? NW: It’s not a long process. We rarely try to change it. Usually it would be just adding harmony to the vocals. CB: In the future, what song do you want to perform? NW: The one I really want to do right now is “A World Without Love” written by McCartney and Lenon and performed by Peter and Gordon. CB: Are rehearsals a long. hard process? NW: Not really. Everyone is a good musician, harmonist, and vocalist. We email it out, practice it during the week, and come to rehearsals. We have no problem with the music. We have problems with putting the harmonics together. CB: Where do you want to be in the near future? NW: We are just going to continue to play… maybe a new record. You never know.
