Sex, Playboy & HIV: A Lecture Unlike Any Other

Last Monday a handful of UNH students gathered in Dodds Theatre to hear a lecture that was not only humorous at times, but one that could save their lives. You can ask any college student these days if they have had the sex talk, and most will tell you, “yeah, I know. Wear condoms. Blah. Blah. Blah. Blah.” Last Monday, however, the talk about sex was from a very scary point of view: a talk that will make anyone think twice about what they do between the sheets. Rebekka Armstrong, a former playboy playmate, shared with the audience the terrifying life she has had to face since being diagnosed HIV positive. Rebekka started off with a very dramatic video giving the students a direct look into her life. She then lectured about this terrible disease and how it affected her. HIV affects everyone differently and Armstrong’s direct approach brought a human aspect to a disease we rarely hear about outside of textbooks. She didn’t sugarcoat it by any means, and we all had a very up close and personal look into the lives of those affected by HIV and AIDS. Rebekka, unlike most, has beaten the odds. She had to deal with a lot of hardship in her life. She has fought with many new drugs. She has lost a ton of her friends. Her life has been torn upside down. See HIV page 5

Fugitive Wanted for Thanksgiving Day Massacre

If anyone thought that all Thanksgiving dinner parties bring togetherness and hospitality, think again. For a family in Jupiter, Florida all it took was a family day massacre to bring everyone together for all the wrong reasons. Since last Thursday, Paul Michael Merhige has been wanted for the family slaying at a Thanksgiving dinner party, leaving four dead and two injured.

Merhige, 35, was at a dinner party for seventeen relatives when he left that night, only to return later with a handgun. He opened fire on his family, killing his aunt Raymonde Joseph, 76, twin sisters Carla and Lisa Merhige, 33, and cousin McKayla Sitton, 6 and injuring brother-in-law Patrick Knight, 37, and cousin Clifford Gebara, 52.

Although authorities are uncertain about a particular motive, reports claim that the shooter did have “ongoing resentment” toward several family members. After the murders, Merhige, who has had a history of mental illness coupled with suicide attempts, escaped and has not been spotted since. He is allegedly driving a 4 door blue

The turkey has been eaten, the belts have been loosened, and the football game is almost done. Is it off to bed? Are you kidding? It’s off to wait in front of stores so we can be the first ones inside when they open early Friday morning. Welcome to Black Friday. Thousands of savvy shoppers and bargain hunters prepare themselves long in advance to the day that officially launches the beginning of the holiday shopping season. People line up outside as early as 2 or 3 a.m. waiting for doors to open, usually at 5 a.m. It is then that the race begins, a race to grab all of the select items with prices that have been slashed drastically. Think of it as a military invasion. Armies line up preparing for battle, with lists and strategies, they are ready to attack. The objective is to get everything for the holidays at half the price all before the sun come up. Don’t stand in the way of parents who are rushing to get the latest toys of the season for their children. It could get ugly. So where did the actual term “Black Friday” come from? Historically, if a day is deemed “black” it is most likely a day that had something terrible happen. Black Tuesday was the day the stock market crashed in 1929 and Black Friday is also a name given to the day in September when the US went under great financial crisis. However, in 1975, the day following Thanksgiving became known as Black Friday, referring to the large hectic crowds and the horrendous traffic. Despite the terrible economy, shoppers still came out and the tradition began. Oddly enough, Black Friday is not the day of the year that rings in the most profits. That day belongs to the day before Christmas. But it is safe to say that the traffic in the stores and on the roads will never compare to any day other than Black Friday. What De Skunk!?

A while back, I was walking with two of my boys, Lamar and Major (Sorry to put you guys on the spotmy bad Dawgs), and upon leaving the dorm room, we were struck with a death defying odor. I highly doubt that this smell on campus is strange to us for it has been recurring more frequently lately, and we all know who the little culprit is- we know it’s that little furry black and white striped creature. That little Pepe Le Pew!! Now I’m not writing to discuss the stanky smell of a skunk, on the contrary, I’m here to talk about the inspiration provided by a skunk (and maybe some student club goers as well). On our journey to the C-Store,

the idea came up of having a skunk perfume (tell me that’s not a brilliant idea). Some possible names were, “Le funk for de hunk!!” or “De funk from de skunk” or “Skunk de la skunk”. We also tried “Hey where are you going? Try my new perfume! De skunk” but we figured that was too long to fit on the bottle. More products are in the works. We have ideas for some Bubble Gum, “SkunkiFresh!”; Shampoo, “Skunk de la poo-poo!”; Body Wash, “Don’t axe de Skunk!” or “Skunky Spice!”; and even Soda, “Dr. Skunk!”. Hopefully, with the right amount of funds and support, these products can come to a store near you, and you will be able to enjoy the natural benefits of the skunk. So I ask everyone, “Let’s Skunk de world!!”

WINONA, Minn. – A man used a hammer to leave a path of destruction at a Target store in Winona. Police said the 39-yearold man smashed big-screen televisions and destroyed other electronics Saturday evening before taking a swing at an officer. The Winona Daily News reported customers ran from

You’re going to graduate from UNH pretty soon, the years fly by pretty quick, and then it’s goodbye to your cozy dorm room, hanging with your roommates and late night runs to Sandellas and New Hall. It could take about six months (maybe longer) for you to find full-time work and earn enough money to get an apartment or pay rent. Luckily, the process can be expedited.

It has been proven that students who graduate with internships on their résumés find jobs faster. An article from the U.S. News and World Report says “The educational (and often unpaid) experience is recommended for careers from fashion designer to investment banker.” Plus, most interns earn credit toward a degree (minus the lab fees). Drill the idea of getting an internship into your head before graduation day. You can start by registering for the Internship

Boot Camp scheduled for December 5, 2009 in the Internship Office in Kaplan 205. The bootcamp, adapted from “Avoid Graduation Agony” by Jaime Winston, is a fantastic opportunity to learn new skills. After being infected with HIV, Rebekka has become a very big activist in getting awareness out about HIV and AIDS. She uses her story to touch people on a personal level. She is a very optimistic person that uses her experience to properly educate students and young adults all over the country about safe sex practices. Her talk definitely gets the message across that safe sex can save your

life. Rebekka Armstrong ended her discussion at UNH in a very interesting way. She proved to the entire audience that, no matter what, to always use a condom. She went on to say how guys always throw you dumb lines about how they can’t use condoms because they’re “too big” for them or because they “can’t feel anything with them on.” Well… Rebekka took out a condom, stretched it

over her hand, and up to her elbow. Proof is in the visual: condoms fit all sizes. Save your life and your partner’s: if you have sex, make it safe. It is much easier taking the time and money to spend on condoms than it does paying doctors to fight for your life. The group is examining ticks from Bethel, Newtown, Redding and Ridgefield, focusing on those carrying the bacteria which cause Lyme disease and babesiosis, a parasitic disease similar to malaria. Several sites were tested in each town, with many sites in close proximity to public areas including school playgrounds, parks and ball fields. With Lyme disease on the rise in Connecticut, Sapi’s study will help towns understand how to better protect their residents from infection and will reinforce the need for vigilance in preventing tick bites. The

study will also serve as a baseline for future studies of changes in tick populations. Sapi is an associate professor and research scholar coordinator of the Cellular and Molecular Biology Graduate Program Department of Biology and Environmental Sciences at UNH. She has over 19 years of experience in molecular biology and specializes in Lyme-disease related research. In addition to researching the tick population in Fairfield County, Sapi is studying the cystic form of borrelia, the bacterium that causes Lyme disease.

Welcome back from Thanksgiving break! I hope everyone had a great holiday full of turkey, great football games (the Giants lost yay!), and Black Friday shopping. Welcome back to campus and to the final push before the holiday break. Get ready for the presentations, projects, exams, and papers that are sure to fill the next 19 days. Oh yeah, and don’t forget those finals! With Dec. 10 looming around the corner, everyone on campus has started studying, reading, and finally catching up on the work that has been put off all semester

to a service that gets me news before any of the national media broadcasts it. I found out about Michael Jackson’s death about 45 minutes before CNN even announced it. This said, there’s a certain responsibility to covering news that many media organizations do not possess. This past Friday, as we all know by now, famed golfer Tiger Woods was in a car accident. Not even an hour after this news broke there were reports of Woods being killed, being drunk at

the wheel, and cheating on his wife. Wow! Imagine that! Someone gets in a car accident, and some psychic idiot says he was cheating on his wife! Amazing. Hey, I stubbed my toe this morning. Am I gonna win a freakin’ laptop later? But hold on: as often as it is their fault, it’s not ALWAYS the media who you have to blame. Sure, all of the media is guilty of publishing incorrect news at least once. The fact that Tiger Woods has refused multiple police in-

terviews, however, begs the question of whether he’s to blame a bit for the crazy rumors going around the news media this past weekend. According to the statement released this past Sunday, Woods “would also ask for some understanding that my family and I deserve some privacy no matter how intrusive some people can be.” Okay, T-Bone, I’ll give you that. You DO deserve some privacy. Everyone does. But you know, as a celebrity, that is something

which is incredibly close to impossible. It’s kind of an unsigned contract you make when you become famous. If you drive into a tree at 2:30 in the morning, questions WILL be asked. Heck, if any of the rest of us “normal” people got in an accident and rammed a tree, we’d be questioned within an hour. So quit complaining; if you don’t want your life questioned, analyzed, and attacked, just go and talk with the police. You don’t have to talk with

the media, but you should speak with law enforcement. If for no other reason, it just makes you look sketchy if you ignore them and refuse to answer any of their questions. But for some of us, these are the last 17 days of December we’ll ever have at the University of New Haven. Yes that’s right, for me (and the rest of the media heads of the USGA); this is the end of our last fall semester. Since 2006, we have taken part in this end of the year tradition: we take our Erin Ennis finals, say our goodAssistant Editor byes, and wish everygoodbye for a month one the usual “Happy to some of your dear- Holidays.” We’ve exest (and most hated) perienced three long

The senior class has had a lot of memories and we are on the brink of experiencing yet another: that last undergraduate holiday break. I know, personally, I am scared to death of graduating. I have come to love my home here at the University of New Haven and, as much as I hate to admit it, I have become as much a Connecticut girl as I am a Jersey girl. I know Editor-In-Chief Zack Rosen is equally unexcited about the

prospect of leaving. It’s crazy how fast the time has gone. So seniors: congratulations! We’ve made it halfway through the insanity that is the 2009-2010 school year. Spend the next 17 days reflecting on your time here at UNH. Yes, of course, be unhappy about your workload for the remainder of the semester. I know mine is going to be terrible. But it is officially the last time you’ll ever be sitting up in your room on a December night, watching the snow fall without being able to go outside and play. It is the last time you’ll get to take

fall finals. It is the last time for holiday cheer and gift giving at our home-away-fromhome. Embrace it, and enjoy it! I know when we get back from break in January; time will fly even faster towards our impending graduation. Underclassmen: make sure to value the time you still have here on campus. Never Too Late to Cross the Finish Line

As humans living in the twenty-first century, we are often corrupted by the need for instant gratification. We refuse to spend more than three days working on a term project, three hours reading a book, three minutes microwaving something for dinner, or three seconds downloading a new song. And in this vicious cycle of immediate attainment, we often give up on

our dreams simply because they take too long to accomplish. I am a woman dictated by deadlines. I make lists for almost every aspect of my life: homework I have to complete, gifts I need to buy, items that must be crammed into my suitcase, and even movies I want to see. For anyone who shares in my list-making obsession, I do not need to convey the amount of satisfaction I experience when I finally get to cross an item off. However, the

more abstract goals I have for myself never quite make it onto a list. And as these little goals get put off longer and longer, they somehow seem further and further from being reached. As an avid (and slightlypsychotic) planner, my friends and family are often urging me to “live in the moment,” and “take advantage of today because you never know what tomorrow holds.” And although I know these sayings are derived from the truth, I’d like

to encourage all of you to accept a different mentality: if your dreams do not come true today, there is nothing wrong with trying again tomorrow. My great uncle, Bernie Frydenberg, is a Holocaust survivor. As a young boy, he was working in a concentration camp instead of playing with friends. He was torn from his parents, rather than being raised by them. Growing up, I had the privilege of hearing his story

first-hand. And even though he told about all of the hardships he endured, he considered himself lucky compared to other individuals subject to the same situation. This past weekend, at the age of 84, my uncle was bar-mitzvahed. Seventy-one years after turning 13, he decided it was time for him to take part in a ritual that signified his passage into manhood. He never had the opportunity to celebrate his bar-mitzvah as a boy because of

the war that encompassed him. For him, however, seven decades later was just as satisfying. Even more so, perhaps, because of the new suit and platters of food he would have never had years ago. Tasks have deadlines, but dreams do not. The passage of time should not be an excuse to give up, but rather, an opportunity to practice – a chance to comprehend the importance of what you will eventually achieve.

In an e-mailed statement Monday, publicist Mahogany Jones said the allegations are false and demanded that "this adverse, inaccurate information cease immediately."

Jones said Michaele and Tareq Salahi are not making any formal comments or arrangements to speak with the media. An appearance previously scheduled for Monday night on CNN's Larry King Live has been canceled. A television executive who spoke on condition of anonymity to publicly discuss bookings had told The Associated Press that the couple's representatives had urged networks to "get their bids in" for an upcoming television interview.

one-third of American TV households now equipped with DVRs like TiVo, the 10 p.m. hour is emerging as a popular time for people to catch up on what they missed earlier in the evening, or earlier in the week. Here's some math: NBC has lost an average of 1.8 household ratings points at the 10 p.m. hour compared to fall 2008, according to the Nielsen Co. At the same time, DVR usage — which is also measured by Nielsen — is up by 1.4 points in that hour. "The DVR phenomenon is a little bit higher than we thought," said David Poltrack, CBS' chief research executive. For example, many people watch CBS' CSI: Crime Scene Investigation Thursdays at 9, tape ABC's Grey's Anatomy at the same time, then watch the medical soap an hour later, he said. They may tape The Mentalist (Thursday at 10) for later viewing. One casualty of growing DVR usage is that Friday nights, home of Medium" and Ugly Betty, are becoming a TV wasteland because so many people are catching up on programs they missed during the week. NBC will settle for any new viewers it can get for Leno. Here's how rough the neighborhood is in prime-time: Leno was the universally hailed king of late-night TV this spring and is now a punching bag, with roughly the same number of people

watching him. But the standards are higher earlier in the night. Leno has been deluged with stories judging NBC's grand experiment a failure, and questioning when the network will pull the plug. Some NBC affiliates are concerned that NBC's 28 percent drop in viewership at 10 p.m. is depressing the ratings for the local newscasts that follow Leno on the schedule, and are key to those stations' budgets. Bob Prather, president of Gray Television, which owns 10 NBC stations, said in a call with analysts that the Leno experiment was a failure that NBC isn't ready to admit. "They gambled," Marc Berman, analyst for Media Week Online, said. "This was the biggest risk I've ever seen a network take in television history. They gambled and they lost." NBC has said publicly that it needs Leno to achieve a 1.5 audience rating among its target audience of 18-to-49year-old viewers for the network to make a profit. During Leno's first 40 shows, the ratings dipped below that number 10 times, and equaled it five times. Leno surprised many people in the industry recently by saying in a Broadcasting & Cable interview that he would have preferred to stay in his late-night Tonight show slot, now occupied by Conan O'Brien. He also said he enjoyed being an underdog. "Emotionally, I can

take body shots all day long and that doesn't really bother me," he told the magazine. And he has defenders. Glenn Abel, a critic for the Web site The Wrap, wrote that he'd seen every one of Leno's shows and it's better than most people think. "Overall, The Jay Leno Show is consistently funnier than Saturday Night Live and is often the most entertaining show in its time slot," Abel wrote. Over the past week or so, there are indications that Leno may have hit bottom in the ratings and is stabilizing. The show is also gathering some small momentum on Tuesday nights, when a lead-in from "The Biggest Loser" leaves more potential viewers. NBC has given no indication that it is ready to pull the plug, the way it might for a single night's show. (Network executives weren't made available to The Associated Press to discuss Leno's show.) Downsizing to one or two nights a week would be an admission of failure. There are so many complications: Does NBC pay Leno to go away? Does it pull the rug out from under O'Brien after paying him millions and moving his show to the West Coast? "I think they have to (ride it out) because I don't think they have a backup plan," said Shari Anne Brill, an analyst for media buyer Carat USA. "What else do they have to go in its place?"

Gobble Gobble. I hope everyone had good turkey times this past weekend! Most of my Thanksgiving was spent similar to a high speed car chase between myself and my fellow hectic travelers as I zipped to and from THREE different Thanksgiving events in a 5 hour period. FUN. I am a fan of the turkey though! HELLO! DID ANYONE ELSE NOTICE by Sam Drotar THERE IS 3 WEEKS LEFT UNTIL THE END A weekly recap of the positives & negatives at UNH OF THE SEMESTER!?! I DID! :D Although the break was nice, it is good to be back. Honestly I don’t know how I am going to come back sane from around 6 solid weeks of living with the ‘rents! Eek! LET IT SNOW! The weather forecast this morning said that we should be expecting snow next week! …Which means that our first snowfall should be approximately in late April. Ba dum psh. I like snow! Snow, although at times EXTREMELY inconvenient and slightly dangerous, can be mother nature’s way of saying, “Hey, I’m pretty.” Or something. I say, that on the first snow we should have an all-day, campus-wide, last-man-standing snowball fight. EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF!

Negatives I HATE PARKING AT UNH! So, last Tuesday, ya know, the day when everyone is loading their cars to leave for the holiday, guess who’s car got booted? MINE! As the rest of my fellow students were packing up their cars…also parked illegally I’ll add, I was sitting next to the big orange obtrusion on my wheel. $150 LATER I was able to drive away. I mean, ha, that wasn’t RIDICULOUS or anything. I mean, it wasn’t the day that EVERY SINGLE STUDENT had parked their vehicles in a loading zone, had other non-UNH cars to pick them up, or parked in a random spot for a few minutes to load their car! NO! Is anyone else extremely annoyed that the water fountains, or as I have recently discovered what the oddballs from the unfortunate state of Massachusetts call ‘bubblers,’ are not working in Maxcy? I am! But it was this happening that made me discover that UNH has their own water bottles! Get ‘Re-chagred!’ We also have our own soda’s! Check ‘em out at the Hazelnut Café in Maxcy. I feel like Scrooge. It’s not even December as I am writing this, but yet I have an intense fiery drive to rip out my car stereo and set it on fire as I run over it with a steem-roller every time a Christmas song comes on. Intense? Maybe! But listen up Christmas! Can you just hold on a second?! I’m just not ready! That, and I’m broke as a joke! :/ Finals. ‘nuff said.

I had to work this evening, so I wasn’t able to go out and celebrate my roommate’s 21st birthday when everyone else did. My plan was still seemingly flawless though, simply involving a shuttle bus to catch up with them downtown. Problem is, the shuttle didn’t show up. Twice. JFG Now even when I try to go to class in Kaplan I have to worry about getting held up at gunpoint...JGF I entered the elevator, and just as it’s about to close, a girl walks in talking on the phone and says “yea I just had to send my teacher emails about not being able to come to class because of flu like symptoms...” And I’m stuck on the elevator with you! Food and drink (including water) are only permitted in the Library Café located on the main level of the library. Food and drink in any other part of the library is not permitted. It is possible to both study and enjoy your food and drink in the library by charging out a laptop computer at the circulation desk and bringing it to the café area where eating and drinking are permitted. The reason that the library needs this policy is to protect our computers and library materials. In addition, ants, roaches, and mice like to come into the library to eat the food crumbs left behind. Yuck! Let’s not give these creatures a reason to come into the library. Help them stay outside where they belong!

Pick up a blank CD in Bartels from December 2 through December 9. Fill it up with your favorite songs and drop it back off during that week. It will be sent to soldiers overseas!
