Clean up after your trees By SAMANTHA MATHEWSON

uring fall months it is important to care for your lawn and clean up leaf litter. The University of New Haven Athletics department has been voluntarily raking neighbors of North Campus’ lawns during the fall months for upwards of eight years, this year almost doubling the number of houses they visit. “Our campus is integrated within a community; I think it is very important for our Student Athletes to respect our neighbors living environment and give back from the support that they provide us,” said Laura Duncan, UNH’s Women’s Soccer coach, who heads the community service initiative under the Athletics Department. “Many of our neighbors that ask are elderly and are not able to rake their own leaves.” Duncan has been a member of the UNH community for five years and the program was already set up when she arrived. In regards to how the Athletic Department reaches out to local neighbors, notifying them of this opportunity, Duncan explained, “We place a flyer on the doors of the street that connect the Main campus to North, a group of Student Athletes are assigned to drop them off and another group will pick them up a few days later. The houses can usually pick from a variety of days that work best for them and then I assign teams accordingly.” Leaves were raked by various athletic teams and campus organizations Nov. 13, 14 and 20. Leaves prevent water infiltration into local groundwater systems, which recharge vital freshwater sources. While it is important to remove the leaves from your yard, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation there are three green alternatives to burning them, which also help keep the air clean. “A big pile of leaves will decompose, but very slowly so one option is creating a compost pile. Leaf volume and decomposition time can be greatly reduced by shredding. Rake dry leaves into low piles and mow over them several times with a mulching mower. Up to three fourths of an inch” deep of shredded leaves can be applied to your lawn. You can add shredded leaves to your compost pile, and use the compost in the spring,” stated the New York State DEC. Another green option is using leaves as mulch in your vegetable or flower garden. “Decaying leaves use up soil nitrogen, so add an organic source of slow-release nitrogen, like composted animal manure, before planting,” suggested the New York DEC. “Keep total mulch depth to three inches or less and don’t let mulch touch the base of a tree or its trunk, or shrubs See Clean Up page 2

“Hands up! Don’t shoot!” These were the cries that refrained through Maxcy Quad as student protestors congregated to partake in a nationwide protest against the ruling of the Darren Wilson case Monday, Dec. 1. On Monday, Nov. 24, Officer Darren Wilson was not indicted by a grand jury regarding the fatal shooting of Michael Brown, 17, in Ferguson, Mo. The grand jury’s failure to find probable cause that a criminal act occurred on Aug. 9, 2014, the day Brown was shot, immediately sparked
protests and demonstrations all over the world. Brown’s family released a statement the next day, Tuesday, Nov. 25, addressing the protestors: “We respectfully ask that you please keep your protests peaceful. Answering violence with violence is not the appropriate reaction.” Inspired by the Brown’s press release, Scott X. Esdaile, the President of the Connecticut NAACP, advocated for peaceful protests in Brown’s honor, and University of New Haven students, led by senior Ronald Pierce, UNH’s NAACP president, took part in the national protest. “I got information today about a campus walkout for you to lead your class out at 1:01 p.m., the time Mike Brown was killed, to
show solidarity and protest and show that this was not okay,” said Pierce, 21. “I didn’t initially know about it—I just heard and quickly got something together.” Despite the short notice, Pierce’s protest had over thirty participants, who met in the middle of Maxcy Quad with their hands up, as Pierce simultaneously fielded questions from the media and led the protest. While the participants’ specific reasons for protesting differed, they all could agree on one thing: Mike Brown would not be forgotten. “We, the vocal underprivileged group, wanted to ban together in order to promote justice for all lives affected by gun violence and police brutality,” said senior Antoinette Gardner. The Mic Network has recently ranked the University of New Haven the eleventh most popular college in the country. Mic.com is an online news network that was founded in 2011. The universities were ranked by how many admissions applications they receive every year. Since 2003, the growth in applications received at UNH has increased 236 percent. The number one ranked school is Liberty University, which has landed a 993 percent increase in applications sent in within the past ten years. Data was collected from 2003 to 2013 with the use of the National Center for Education Statistics, which saves on-going surveys and releases the data to the public when finished. The list also included schools that attracted at least 3,000 students. The staff, faculty, and students of UNH are happy to hear how well known the university has become. Karen Isaacs, a UNH Communication professor, is pleased with the news and how it positively reflects the good the university does. “Word is getting out that this is a good place to go,” Isaacs said. Jeffrey Foster, a professor in the English department, said, “This is certainly a testament to the high caliber of the faculty, staff, and students of UNH. This ranking comes as no surprise to me.” Zaamir Ali, a freshman majoring in Engineering, is also happy with the news and hopes that the university strives to get ranked higher within the next few years. The University is proud to receive this honor and aims to charge on with this ranking behind its belt.

winkly lights, heavy music beats, camera flashes and dancing couples filled the dance floor at the first ever Second Chance Prom held in the Alumni Lounge on Saturday, Nov. 22. UNH PRIDE held the event in order to allow students the opportunity to “go with their preferred date” says the mastermind behind the dance, Olivia Carl. She notes that some students did not go to their high school prom because they “may have been afraid of negative reactions; some schools don’t have prom, and some people just flat out hated their prom. I know prom seems like a weird idea in college, but there are no rules for a second chance.” Carl said that she saw the concept of a Second Chance Prom online and the idea just stuck with her. The event meant a lot to both Carl and UNH PRIDE, who supported her fully. The event was held this semester, opposed to being held in the traditional Prom season, because the “E-board knew how much it meant to me.” Carl adds that she will be abroad next semester and the board members wanted for her to be here to see her idea of the Second Chance Prom become a reality. Appearances were made by members of the Communications Club, Alpha Phi Omega, Photography Club and Graphic Design Club. These groups cosponsored the event with UNH PRIDE. Also, music was provided by WNHU.

Carl says that she was very happy with the overall turnout for the Second Chance Prom. As a first time event, they initially handed out over 100 hundred tickets! Also, other people came over the course of the night that did not pick up tickets before hand, so they handed some out at the door. There are hopes to make the Second Chance Prom an annual event. “I think with the turn out we had this year and it being a new event, I don’t see a reason that we can’t make it bigger each year,” Carl said. “So yes, there will be another Second Chance prom next year and there will be a different theme, not sure what it is yet, but it will be different.” She also notes that the student body was very well received on the idea for the event.
“If there were any negatives comments, I never heard them,” she said. “All the members of PRIDE were behind the idea 100 percent. Everyone I talked to thought the idea was pretty great. I think any negativity, if you could call it that, would be from people thinking it’s kind of weird to have a prom in college, but once it was better explained the idea behind it people got on board.” Carl says that the organization has worked out any kinks in the event with the first run through and they now have a better idea on how to run it in years to come. She would also like to send her thanks to everyone that aided in the event’s planning and set-up and to everyone that attended. She hopes everyone enjoyed him or herself and had as much fun as she did.

Leaves are then composted and the compost made available to the public. Ask your local recycling coordinator if this is an option in your community as not all landfills will accept yard waste,” said the New York DEC. It is important to refrain from burning leaves because smoke contains dangerous compounds, which can be harmful to residents in the surrounding area and can spark an accidental, larger, fire. More information can be found at http://www.dec. ny.gov/public/46613.html. “Over the last few years the number of houses has grown, I believe this came from positive feedback,” said Duncan. “I think it is a great activity for our teams to take part in an event off the field and judging by the pictures I receive I think they have a lot of fun doing it. Most teams commit an hour to an hour and half per house.” Senior, and Captain of the Women’s Track and Field team Ivy Watts has participated in the community leaf raking for all of her four years at UNH.

“Each year our team goes out into the community and participates in raking the leaves of the houses in the surrounding area. I really think this is a great experience for both myself and my teammates to give back to the community and help those who may not otherwise be able to do it themselves,” said Watts. “We are going out into the community and showing that we are here and willing to help. I think that no matter how small our efforts are, we are still making a difference in the community and that is what truly matters. When the residents of the home thank us for our efforts, it makes the time spent outside raking worth it. This experience is important for us to build a relationship with the community and take some time out of our busy schedules to give back and help others. That

Social media played a big role in the protest too, as protestors got the word out about the demonstration through Facebook, Twitter, and email, and many wanted to combat the online negativity encircling the Ferguson controversy. “When you see all the ignorant comments posted on social media, it genuinely makes me proud to stand out here and fight for what I believe,” said Es-pranza
Humphrey, Assistant Secretary of UNH’s NAACP. Tyjee Williams, Vice President of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, agreed. “Everyday, you see different videos on social media about police doing their jobs wrong. It upsets everyone that nothing is being done about this subject,” Williams said. “There will not be any peace until something is done.” While some student protestors, such as Bridget

This year a total of 24 houses were raked, in comparison to the 13 houses that were visited last year. All teams in the Athletic Department rake at least one house and some teams with larger rosters took two. “Our coaches and administration spent Friday morning raking three houses as a group and multiple organizations from across campus helped out,” said Duncan. Men’s Rugby Club, Men’s Lax Club, Black Student Union, CJ Club, ALD honors society, Kappa Chapter of Lambda Alpha Upsilon Fraternity Inc. are among the many additional organizations that helped out.

––––––––––––––––––––– Up next is mayonnaise. In this quantity, which makes about ¾ of a cup, I suggest doing it by hand to get a feel for it. This all comes together in no more than three or four minutes and can be stored in an airtight container in the cooler for about a week. Mayonnaise can sometimes be filed under “mysterious and creamy white condiments” next to such things as sour cream or cream cheese. I’ve encountered many people zealous about their food not touching mayo, under any circumstances, otherwise it’s as good as dead to them. However, I’ve always been in love with it, and have never understood such claims. I completely side with the Dutch on this one: mayonnaise all the things! Mayonnaise is simply a thick emulsion (an emulsion being the suspension of a water based substance in a lipid) of egg yolks, vinegar, oil and a touch of water. The technique of drizzling the oil into the yolks, water and vinegar creates a thick and creamy sauce; perfect on a burger, with fries, on a sandwich, or as the base to salad dressing. Mayo on its own is fantastic, but you can dress it up easily by adding any number of spices or fresh herbs. Some of my favorite additions are white anchovies, a ton of lemon zest, parmesan cheese and smoked paprika, which makes the best twist on a Caesar salad I’ve ever had.
Safflower Oil About ¾ cup Egg Yolks 2 each, pasture raised Dijon Mustard 1 tsp White Vinegar 1 Tbs Salt a good pinch Fresh Pepper TT Water as needed Method Begin with both of the yolks and the dijon in the bottom of a large bowl with an almost completely rounded bottom, then whisk them to combine. Very slowly, begin adding the oil, drop by drop; at first, the process is slow. Once four or five tablespoons have been successfully added, begin drizzling the oil and whisking vigorously. At this point, the mixture is thick and fully emulsified. Add the vinegar, salt, and pepper. Whisk to combine. Notice the change in color from a yellow to a pale yellow. Then, thin with water for the consistency you desire. Quick Fix: Add another room temperature yolk to the broken mayo; whisk vigorously, and add small amounts of warm water.

Are RAs really necessary?

ith all the recent changes being made at the University of New Haven, one that should be taken into consideration is the need, or lack thereof, of residential assistants, more commonly known as RAs. RAs are fellow UNH students whose purpose is to monitor our on campus residential halls by enforcing campus policies and restricting access to who goes in and out of the dorms. Although for freshmen, RAs play an important role in their transition to college life, for us upper classmen, they are not all that necessary. For freshmen who are living on their own for the first time, RAs are crucial. They serve as a mentor to freshmen in many ways, doing everything from helping them find their classes to setting them up for registration and answering any questions about campus they might have. They are the one you go to when you’re locked out of
your dorm room at 2 a.m. or who intervene when you’re having problems with your roommate. They are also the one who keeps you safe, even if that means having to write you up when they feel you have crossed the line, with alcohol, drugs or any other threat to your well-being. Freshmen need this, they need some type of authority figure to keep everything under control since they no longer are getting that from their parents. If RAs were strictly implemented into residential halls for freshmen only, no change would be needed, but that is not the case. By sophomore, junior and senior year, we finally get the hang of things. We have figured out college life and are well adjusted. We don’t have questions about campus we once had and we have realized the importance of always making sure you have your key before you leave the room; therefore, we no longer need RAs. As we get older, we are given more responsibility and freedom but having an RA only limits that. To make matters worse, most of the RAs during these years of college are the same age as the students they are given
authority over. It is extremely awkward and a little irritating when your room is inspected or you are being written up by someone who is the same age as you and undoubtedly doing the same things as you in their free time. Some RAs have also been known to abuse their power. This does not go for every single RA because most of them are great and do their job to the best of their abilities, treating students very respectfully. But there are some who use their authority to intimidate residents and make their lives miserable. I had the unfortunate luck of experiencing one of these power hungry RAs in the past, and it was horrible. Whereas some RAs take the time to get to know their residents, the first thing this RA said was, “First off, I am not and never will be your friend.” As a transfer student, her attitude did not give me high hopes of making friends at UNH easily, but thankfully the rest of the campus proved to be much friendlier. This RA also conducted random searches of my room looking for contraband and going through my refrigerator whenever she pleased, hop-
ing to find a reason to write me up. She succeeded a few times, until I finally met with her superior, a residential director, and found out everything she was doing was against the rules. After that, her searches stopped but her attitude worsened, ignoring my existence every chance she got. I came to find out, this RA was so hard on me because she had a problem with someone I had made friends with early on in the year, so she spent the rest of the year trying to make me extremely uncomfortable. RAs such as this one should not be given the privilege of having authority over anyone. The purpose of this is not to prove that RAs are a bad thing, because they are not. It is just to show that they are really only needed for freshmen. Upper classmen are perfectly capable of taking care of themselves without having someone who is the same age as them watching over them, acting as a superior. Also, campus is small and the older we get, the more people we know. It becomes impossible not to mix business with pleasure and as a result, situations like the one I experienced can become a problem.
Christmas movies on Netflix. But I don’t ignore Thanksgiving: in fact I put some things up for Thanksgiving as well. I just think that, as a college student who lives here the majority of my time, I get the short end of the stick when it comes to Christmas cheer, celebration, and the whole holiday season magic. Growing up, I didn’t have those magical holidays with family like you see in movies that have resulted in making me an obsessive Christmas freak. I just think that this time of year is beautiful. You have the leaves falling, the chilly weather and cute hats and scarves that come with it, and then two holidays practically back to back that are meant to bring families together. Add on the snow, the excitement of the end of one year, and the beginning of another, and overall the season is full of joy!
If you live at home or commute, you have the opportunity to see all the lights hung on houses and the trees in the windows; you get to go to the stores and see the Christmas decorations, and you can watch Christmas movies with your family. You get the opportunity to decorate your house in December and other Christmas traditions. However, as a full-time resident of UNH, I go home for Thanksgiving and see all of the Thanksgiving decorations, then I have to come back to school and focus on final exams and papers for all of my classes. By the time I get home for Winter Break, everything to prepare for Christmas at my house is already done. The tree is picked out and decorated by the rest of my family, the lights have been hung outside, and the stockings are ready for Santa to stuff. So I
miss out on all of that magic. Therefore, I make up for it by starting the Christmas season early and trying to bring as much magic to my dorm as possible—which isn’t easy on a college campus. Being away at college ruins the Christmas season. You lose out on vital, quality family time and finals ruin the first half of December, literally cutting out half the Christmas spirit anyone could have even bothered to muster up—because we all know it gets harder not to be a Scrooge as you get older. So I think, instead of hating on people who start celebrating Christmas early, everyone should try to join in, be a kid for a day! Watch the Polar Express and drink hot chocolate with marshmallows while you make some paper snowflakes to hang around your room; don’t let finals ruin your Christmas spirit!

––––––––––––––––––––– It’s that time of year again—the best time if you ask me! Dec. 1 marks the start of ABC Family’s annual 25 Days of Christmas countdown, where each night they play our holiday favorites, building anticipation until Christmas finally arrives. These are the top three
must see Christmas movies this year: 1.The Grinch Who Stole Christmas: This should go without saying, but the Grinch is a Christmas classic! With Jim Carrey playing the Christmas hating Grinch and little Cindy Lou Who doing her absolute best to crown him the King of Christmas, it is hilarious and adorable for every family to watch. While the Grinch continuously tries to ruin Christmas in Whoville, Cindy Lou Who struggles with growing up and losing the Christmas Spirit, something we can all relate too. Have no fear though, the ending completely captures the true meaning of Christmas and you will find yourself wishing you too could be a Who! 2.Christmas Cupid: This is an ABC Family original
movie and is a modern day remake of A Christmas Carol. The gorgeous Christina Milian is career obsessed and losing the Christmas spirit when one of her clients, played by Pretty Little Liar’s Ashley Benson, dies and revisits her as a ghost, showing her the past, present and future. Add in the dreamy Chad Michael Murray as a lead role and, despite a few rather cheesy lines, you will be re-watching this movie for years to come. 3.The Year Without a Santa Clause: This movie will put you in an instant time warp to when you were a child. Filmed in 1974, this movie has stuck around for decades and isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. In case you have forgotten, this movie is about the year Santa didn’t feel there was enough
Christmas spirit so he wanted to take a year off. Santa’s elves, Jingle and Jangle Bell, set out to save Christmas, but after a run in with the Heat Miser and Snow Miser, they find it more difficult than they thought. Although it is a children’s movie, it has some catchy tunes and successfully reminds us of the importance of the Christmas Spirit. This time of year can get extremely stressful with classes winding down and papers and finals coming up. Don’t forget to enjoy the Christmas season and destress with these fun Christmas movies. ABC Family offers 25 days of them, so take a few hours here and there to relax and enjoy the best time of the year!
Great movies to watch with your conservative friends

––––––––––––––––––––– As someone with many conservative friends and family members, I, of all people, know how difficult it can be to get those in your life to watch a movie that they don't find completely and utterly offensive and devoid of all moral character. However, having been surrounded by family and friends who consist primarily of Catholic Republicans for most of my life, I like to think I know a thing or two about finding movies appropriate for a fun movie night in that your conservative friends will never forget. Ted: Frequently referred to as America's answer to The King's Speech, Ted tells the heartwarming story of a boy and his beloved teddy bear. This fictionalized story of the childhood and early adulthood of the late Senator Ted Kennedy will certainly leave your friends speechless. You'll laugh, you'll cry and your friends will certainly never stop talking about it. Magic Mike: Everybody's heard of Harry Houdini, but few have heard of the mastermind behind many of his tricks. Magic Mike tells the story of the magician who lived in Houdini's
shadow for years, acting as a ghost writer of sorts for the tricks that made Houdini a star. With stunts that will take your breath away, it's safe to say that anyone who watches this movie will never be the same. Brokeback Mountain: Everyone is familiar with the Greek myth of Sisyphus, the Greek man condemned by the gods to roll a rock uphill for eternity. It's no wonder it took home three Oscars and has been recognized by several notable Christian organizations over the years. 50 Shades of Grey: Although not yet released, this film is sure to be well-known in the world of prestigious film festivals, such as Cannes and Sundance, and will most certainly generate some commentary from film critics as well. Moviegoers are thrown into the mysterious, private lives of some of the most fascinating people in the world: those who suffer from color blindness. Few people realize the plight of those who see nothing but gray their entire lives, and the struggle to contain oneself while watching such a touching film is sure to be genuinely difficult at times. Give some of these films a try—your friends will not only be impressed with your uncanny ability to choose films of creative and moral substance, but they'll also most likely trust you to make the choice for every movie night in the future. Tis the season to game! The holidays are the best times to be a video game player. Video game companies tend to release their most anticipated games in the fall and early winter because sales increase due to the holidays. With games such as Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Destiny, Halo: The Master Chief Eedition, Far Cry 4, NBA 2K15, FIFA 15, Assassins Creed Unity, Super Smash Bros, and Grand Theft Auto V all being released so closely together, a gamer becomes very indecisive! The top three games that I feel are a must get this season are Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, Destiny and Halo: The Master Chief Edition. Call of Duty is always an anticipated game every year. Gamers like me love the type of games called shooters, meaning the objective is to be basically shoot as many people as you can. Call of Duty is an exceptional shooter game because it offers
story mode and online play, which makes you feel like you are a part of the army, especially with all of the different gun and uniform customizations you can do. Destiny is made by Bungie, the same makers of Halo, and is another shooter game, with the objective to protect the universe from different alien forces. The best thing about this game is that there's always something to do; the makers said that they have enough video game content for the game to run for the next ten years, so I highly recommend this game! Last but not least is the Halo: Master Chief Edition. Halo was one of the first games to gain respect of people who enjoy shooter games. This Halo comes with all of the previous Halos, so if you grew up playing Halo, you’ll love this fully remastered edition for the Xbox One; it's like a blast from your past but even better. Overall, the holiday season is a blessing and a curse with the release of so many video games: you don't know what one to get first. Have no fear, stores will help you figure it out by having special deals like buy one get one free or buy one get one half off!

It’s almost over! But don’t stop planning!
Hello Chargers,
RSOs, the end of the semester is very near and I just wanted to point out a few things in regards to utilization of USGA funds.
I hope everyone had a restful Thanksgiving Break, and are all ready to continue to strive for success in these last few days of the semester.
The last day for organizations to hold events for the semester is Monday Dec. 8, which is less than a week away. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t begin planning for next semester’s events. It is a good idea to consider turning in paperwork for events that are taking place at the beginning of the semester now. Turning in paperwork now provides ample time for event planning and can give your organization a bit more flexibility in terms of your events.
We must also remember to take care of ourselves especially in the stressful times that are soon to come. I encourage you all to attend the final USGA Meeting of the semester this Friday at 11 a.m. in the Alumni Lounge. Warmest Regards, Richard Rotella USGA President Putting you in USGA!

iane Ward is a singer/songwriter whose music and story are more than worth sharing and telling. Staying true to her roots, she is still a resident in the Floridian corner of the world in which she grew up, but her music has always been a virtual escape. “I became interested in music when I was very young,” she shared. “My sister’s husband was in a band and they used to always rehearse in the garage of my parents house. I became infatuated by the drums, and found out much later in life that my mom pawned her wedding ring to get me my first drum kit.” You may have the same question I did though—when did Ward find her powerful voice?
“It was kind of a fluke during college,” Ward admitted. “I went to college for music and began messing around with the keyboard and guitar, you know, just writing for fun. A bass player I knew wanted me to join his band on the drums, and I did. In the beginning I was just singing backup, but one day our lead vocalist didn’t show up – she went off to be with her future husband that night,” Ward joked. I sang the songs from behind the drums and we collectively realized how much more money we could make from gigs with one less member. The vocalist was okay with it since her priorities had changed a bit too, and everything sort of fell into place.” Beautiful Ways, Ward’s fifth and most recent album, was released this year on Oct. 21. When she started working on the album, Ward had no idea the challenges she would face in order to finish it. Halfway through the creative process, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and made the bold and brave
decision to continue working on the album throughout the chemotherapy and radiation process. “There was a little bit of wavering toward either end of the spectrum,” said Ward, when I inquired whether the idea of finishing the album once she was diagnosed was unanimous or not. “There were days that were really hard with my energy level and such. The way you feel physically and emotionally makes it really hard to escape and focus on something else. At the same time, the recording process was a wonderful escape from what was happening at that time,” she revealed. “It took a long time to finish the album however, because I was simultaneously recovering from what my body was going through.” She had many supporters that played a role in the process of creating Beautiful Ways, one of whom is Jack Shawde, a longtime supporter and friend of Ward. Shawde co-produced, recorded, and played multiple instruments on the album. “Sometimes my voice

Just before the Thanksgiving Break, Fall Out Boy took to the airwaves of Zayne Lowe’s BBC One show to release not only a new track, but news about their sixth studio album which is set to be released in the new year. The album will be called American Beauty/American Psycho and will be out worldwide on Jan. 20, just in time for the new semester to start. The title track was played on BBC One and has already been catching mixed reviews from critics and fans alike. Now, fans of Fall Out Boy shouldn’t be shocked by a musical shift in direction as they’ve done this quite often in their career. We can all remember that when Follie a Deux dropped in 2008 many cried out that “they wanted the band to go back to Take This To Your Grave” and some even believed that it was the negative feedback on the album that prompted the hiatus. Even Save Rock and Roll was different, albeit there were elements of previous albums but there seemed to be no fuss over that be-
cause the fans had gotten their boys back. With this new song being released it seems like the fanbase is back to their old FOB shaming ways and to be honest…it frustrates me to no end. Of course a band tries new things and new sounds over the course of their career, that’s exactly what music and art is! If Fall Out Boy released album after album of Take This To Your Grave-esque songs, not only would the fans get bored of hearing it but the band would get tired of playing as well. To be an artist means taking in everything around you, your experiences, and expressing them in song. My favorite artists are those who use their art like a diary; I can tell the experiences they went through or the moods they were in just by the album or song I’m listening to. I will admit that “American Beauty/ American Psycho” is going to take a little time to get used to for me. The chorus is very poppy, and reminds me a little bit of the theme song to the show Code Monkeys but the verses really get back into the dig of Stump’s voice that I love so much. The band wrote of the song throughout their social media sites saying, ““We thought about where this all began but razing it
and starting again, so we reached out to a kindred spirit in Sebastian- from the past he mined some of the future. The mission is the heart pure and simple as it can be- distilled but never fragmented or disguised. Through these experiments, that were sometimes lost in translation, we persevered- ‘they tried to bury us but they didnt realize we were seeds’…” I think that while this song might not be everyone’s cup of tea, the first single off the album, “Centuries” just proves that there is still strength on this album and artfully structured lyrics that we know and love from Pete and Patrick. Anybody who says they’re swearing off the Chicago boys for good are closing themselves out from what has the makings of another amazing release. Preorders will begin Dec. 15 and the single “American Beauty/American Psycho” will be released Dec. 8. Those who purchase the preorder will receive the title track, “Centuries,” and one other song which has not been released yet. I, for one, am excited and ready for anything Fall Out Boy puts out. No matter what direction they choose, I’ll be loyally following behind them.
would disappear at times and it got scary,” Ward admitted. “Jack has been with me from the beginning of my solo career and while he was very gentle and patient during the engineering process, he revealed to me later on just how frightening it was to him as well. He is someone who knew my voice from the very beginning, so to hear me, at times, completely voiceless was just as jarring for him as it was to myself.” After listening through Beautiful Ways for the second time, I wondered what song resonated with Ward the most when all was said and done. “They’re like my children,” she said jokingly, “it’s so hard to pick one. If I had to choose, I’d have to say I really love the title track ‘Beautiful Ways.’ The way that song came together just aesthetically and from a melodic point of view made me very proud. I love that song and Motorcade, which I think has a really nice playfulness to it.” It is easy to understand why those two tracks are the
“favorite children” off of Ward’s new album. They’re the ones that come home from school with all A’s on their report cards. Both tracks are beautifully constructed from strong melodies to poetic lyrical lines, making them seamlessly flow through your speakers and into your heart. After hearing some of her main musical influences, it is easy to see where this melancholy-like sound resonates from. “I gravitate towards artist that write, coupled with a piano. I’m a huge Lennon and McCartney fan, and I love all of the Beatles. Also, artists such as Billy Joel, who write solo with a piano draw me in because I always gravitate towards melodies. Personally though, I am most influenced by my mom and dad as corny as that sounds,” she laughed. “I have a wonderful family, and if I can become half the person each of them are, I’ll be happy.” When listening through some of Ward’s previous work, I picked up on a noticeable difference in her songwriting, as if her music
grew up alongside her. “The songwriting process is really organic for me,” she confessed. “Sometimes I can sit down to write and it will work, but other times it happens when I’m at the grocery store or driving in my car and I have to stop what I’m doing and jot down the idea before it leaves me. It’s like catching fireflies,” said Ward. “You never know where the idea is in the ultimate grand scheme of things, or where it comes from, but when you see it, you need to capture it.” I found Ward’s comparison of songwriting to catching fireflies extremely fitting, as Beautiful Ways is a wonderfully magical creation, just like a mason jar of lightening bugs on a summer night. When you bring a million flickering fireflies to one place, you are left with something mesmerizing. Diane Ward successfully turned a million fleeting thoughts into a collection of stories that captivate the listener, taking them along for the ride, while simultaneously inspiring them.

The Como Brothers Band are a pop/rock/blues band out of Long Island that is growing in influence every day. They have been around music their whole lives and continue to merge their past influences with the songs that they write. Matt Como plays bass and sings vocals while Andrew Como plays lead guitar and also sings. They are known for their extremely catchy lyrics and melodies in every song they write. The Como Brothers Band have opened for acts such as Howie Day, David Cook, Tyler Ward, PJ Morton of Maroon 5, Ryan Beatty and more. They have released 2 EPs, The Speed of Sound and Still Waters and a full-length album titled Baby Steps.

Breaking through the “White Noise” By ASHLEY WINWARD

f you look at where Massachusetts natives PVRIS were a year ago, it’s simply awe-inspiring to see how much they’ve accomplished. Since changing their name from “Paris” to “PVRIS” for what has been rumored to be legal reasons, and signing onto Rise Records, it’s been a whirlwind of excitement. I got the chance to catch lead singer Lynn Gunnulfsen, more commonly known to fans as Lynn Gvnn, in an off moment just before the holiday season to talk about the band’s success and how there is a great deal of style influence in what is PVRIS. The biggest buzz surrounding the group has been the release of White Noise, their debut full length album under Rise Records. Gunnulfsen explained the process of making the album which took place over the course of the past year, especially the heavy influence of VersaEmerge’s Blake Harnage. “He and I had been in touch for a while,” she said. “When I was in high school he taught me how to do electronic stuff on my laptop, and ever since he, I wouldn’t say mentored but we’ve always kept in touch and he’d always give me pointers and stuff here and there with programming stuff. When he found out we were working on a new album he was like ‘Hey let’s do a record together!’ and I was like ‘Hell yeah!’ So we just really hit it off and we kind of just combined our brains together, all our different sounds and made the record

what it is now!” The release was also very significant due to the fact it was their first release on their new label, Rise Records. “We had it in our top picks for a while just because we had known a lot of people that had worked with them and said they were a good label to them. We were actually supposed to sign with a different label and the day we were supposed to sign our contracts our management called and was like ‘Don’t sign anything, we have an offer from Rise on the way’ and we were like ‘Hell yeahhhh!’ So we went with them, it’s just proved to be the right choice because they believe in what we want to do 100 percent and they are so supportive and enthusiastic and just as excited about everything as we are. They’ve gone above and beyond anybody’s expectations including our own for how much they’ve done for us, it just worked out to be an awesome fit.” The release has seen tons of great press, making the
Editor’s Choice list for iTunes alternative, and the band made it on the Huffington Post’s “18 Artists You Need to Know Half Way Through 2014” as well. With vibrancy in both Gunnulfsen’s voice and the popping synth elements of the music, there is one piece of the band that doesn’t seem to be quite as bright; their media. From photos to their music videos, the group presents themselves quite literally with the color drained from them. When I asked about the black and white motif of their appearance I found out it was both preference and purposeful. “I like the look of black and white a lot. But also, I think it’s kind of a cool concept because you think about black and white and there’s obviously something missing to them and that’s colors. That’s kind of up to your interpretation and kind of what I like PVRIS to be. I like it to have a little bit of mystery and a little bit of uncertainty to it so you kind of have to fill in the blanks
The Como Brothers just recently played their first headlining show at Theater Three in Port Jefferson, New York and sold the highest number of tickets they have so far. The band has also reached out and made fans in places like Philadelphia, Rhode Island, Boston, and New York City. A great and unique characteristic about these brothers is that they always put the fans first. They take time af-
ter every single show to talk to fans, even people who have never seen them before, and get to know them. M
ost people are familiar with The Hunger Games scenario. Set in a dystopian future, two teenagers from each district in the country of Panem have to fight each other to the death for the amusement of the Capital, where citizens live a life of splendor and excess contrasting the poor conditions in the districts. The first Hunger Games film focused on the tributes in the games from District 12, Katniss and Peeta. The second film, Catching Fire, follows up on Katniss and Peeta and how they are affected by their time in the games. In a turn of events, the next Hunger Games draws its tributes from past victors, meaning Katniss and Peeta have to fight for their lives again. Throughout Catching Fire, seeds for rebellion are being planted as uprisings occur. Now, in Mockingjay Part 1, there is a full scale revolution against the capital. Spoiler alert for Catching Fire, but Katniss destroys the arena and several tributes escape with her to join the rebellion. The film portrays Katniss aiding uprisings in the districts, while she rouses all the citizens of

Panem in rebellion. First off, Jennifer Lawrence delivers as always as she plays Katniss with conviction and purpose. Supporting characters also deliver solid performances, especially Elizabeth Banks and Woody Harrelson. Phillip Seymour Hoffman plays Plutarch Heavensbee, the idealistic advisor to the rebellion. It is bittersweet to see him in one of his last performances, yet he too delivers a solid performance in one of his last times on screen. The direction is engaging and compelling, as Francis Lawrence never loses sight of the human drama in this large scale story. The visuals of war scenes are state of the art yet the conditions look lived in, creating a distinct environ-
ment of Panem. Even the soundtrack is memorable, especially the “Hanging Tree Song” which will stay stuck in your head long after the movie ends. Mockingjay Part 1 is not just a good young adult movie, it’s a great wartime movie. The horrors of war feel real as does the political allegory. Mockingjay Part 1 raises questions of the role of government and whether or not the ends justify the means. Donald Sutherland plays a calculating President Snow, who will stop at nothing to quell rebellion. He takes a Machiavellian approach to politics, believing that bombing a hospital of wounded is worth it if it will quell rebellion. He is driven by ideals just as much as
Katniss, and the two play off each other very well as the leaders of two sides of a war. Looking back, I really have no complaints about this movie. The stakes are raised from Catching Fire, and the stage is set for an exciting and intense finale. This might very well be the best Hunger Games film to date. The first film set up the world but was limited by poor action and a confused screenplay. Catching Fire improved upon the production value and humanized the characters much more. Mockingjay Part 1 has fully set up a political allegory that is extremely satisfying. Without a doubt, Mockingjay Part 1 is worth full price.
Howard, Jurassic World will delve into genetically crossing different species of dinosaurs. From a critical point of view, this trailer is underwhelming. While it is cool to see the park up and running, the visuals are practically on par with the original film from twenty years ago. The formula to making the first film a masterpiece was the blend of astounding visuals, great characters and an intriguing story. The intriguing story was lost in the sequels, but Jurassic World has had over two decades of distance from the first film
to be refreshing. Hopefully, Chris Pratt can be as prolific as Jeff Goldblum or Sam Neill in the first film. A small unknown title called Star Wars is also coming out with a new installment ten years after Revenge of the Sith, with The Force Awakens set to release Dec. 18, 2015. The much anticipated follow up takes place 22 years after the end of 1983’s Return of the Jedi, with Carrie Fischer, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford all set to return as aged versions of Luke, Leah and Han. The trailer shows very
little in terms of plot, but rather random disjointed shots. Such scenes include an unmasked stormtrooper in the dessert, presumably on Tataouine, a rolling droid, a land speeder, the Millennium Falcon chasing TIE fighters and, most iconic, a Sith drawing a tri-bladed lightsaber. This trailer really is only a compilation of unrelated shots, but that is fine. The Force Awakens is over a year away, and this trailer is only meant to tease audiences and remind the public that Star Wars is coming. The summer movie should bring

Two new major trailers debuted over the Thanksgiving Holiday. First off, the Jurassic World trailer debuted last Tuesday. Set to come out on June 12, 2015, Jurassic World will feature a fully operating park as opposed to the preview park portrayed in the first film. Starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas
The Sundance Award winning movie Whiplash induces an intense cringing reflex that one experiences when hearing nails on a chalk board. Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons are the perfect duo to carry out this emotionally intense drama. Teller plays Andrew, an aspiring percussionist at one of the most prestigious music schools in the country. In his pursuits, he stumbles upon Terrance Fletcher, a well-known musician and head of an elite ensemble in which Andrew becomes a core percussionist. Andrew soon realizes, however, the dark and emotionally traumatizing methods Fletcher uses to push (or in some cases, psychologically impair) his students to propel them past their limitations. If there is no other reason for seeing this movie, watch it for the detrimental chemistry of Teller and Simmons. More times than not, they have the ability to clinch onto your senses of empathy and compassion towards others and agonizingly wear it down to your core. Despite the unethical methods Fletcher
uses to push his students, Andrew lets himself become consumed more and more by Fletcher’s rotten nature and rejects sustaining anything remote of a personal life outside of Fletcher’s ensemble. The tension between these two tears the audience’s heartstrings right out. Writer/Director Damien Chazelle Writ makes the audience question the nature of motivating people to achieve their personal best in their dreams. He definitely challenges the current “everyone gets a trophy” mentality used throughout the country to encourage kids to try their best. Fletcher clearly represents the extreme other end of using anger and emotional venom when pressuring a person whose only choices are breaking down and quitting or exceling further than ever ever imagined. Andrew is supposed to be the red flag that begs the question: Where is the line drawn? Andrew is reminiscent of Natalie Portman’s portrayal of an obsessed ballet dancer in Black Swan. As he slowly becomes more dependent of being in the ensemble, his obsession rises fast and loud with a crescendo towards the exhilarating climax at the end. Whiplash will undoubtedly satisfy the price of ticket.

a proper trailer rather than a teaser. At least this trailer incorporated JJ Abrams signature lens flare, arguably overused in Star Trek. While not overly im-
pressed by this first trailer, this teaser has peaked interest and will leave you hungry for more Star Wars.

Chicago is in need of a revamped offense. The Bears hope to play spoiler. Expect a victory from the Cowboys. Pittsburgh Steelers @ Cincinnati Bengals Neither of these teams have been playing well lately. The Bengals hold a lead in the AFC North and hope to extend their lead with a win. The Steelers defense continues to struggle and needs to win to stay alive in the tight AFC Playoff race. Expect a close game with the Bengals coming away victorious. St. Louis Rams @ Washington Redskins The Rams might be the best team that doesn’t make the playoffs this year. They have pulled off some impressive victories this season. Washington meanwhile has been inconsistent all year. They have tried three different quarterbacks and all have failed. Expect the Rams to continue their improved season with a win in Washington. New York Giants @ Tennessee Titans The Giants went from bad to worse Sunday when they blew a big lead to the lowly Jacksonville Jaguars. Expect this game to be when the Giants finally get over the hump and get a victory. Both teams are on long losing streaks. One team’s losing streak will end; expect it to be the Giants. Carolina Panthers @ New Orleans Saints Carolina has fallen this year after a good 2013 season. They can’t seem to get anything going. New Orleans is still in the hunt for a playoff spot, despite being under .500 on the season. Expect the Saints to make a push toward the playoffs. Anything can happen come playoff time. New York Jets @ Minnesota Vikings This game is sure to be sloppy. The Vikings should win easy in New York with rookie Teddy Bridgewater under center. The Jets are having a bad season and can only wait for it to be over.

Expect the Colts to go into Cleveland and shut down the Browns. Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Detroit Lions Detroit is in the midst of a division battle with the Packers. They trail the Packers by one game. The Lions can’t overlook this game or the Bucs will win. The 2-10 Bucs can only hope and pull off the upset in this game. Houston Texans @ Jacksonville Jaguars The Texans are still very much alive in the AFC Playoff race. They will need to win the rest of their games and jump a few teams to do that though. Expect Houston to go into Jacksonville and take down the Jaguars. Jacksonville has played many teams close this year and could knock out the Texans. Buffalo Bills @ Denver Broncos While Buffalo has been very much improved this season, they don’t have what it takes to keep pace with Denver’s offense. The Broncos have slim lead in the division and for a first round bye in the AFC. Expect the Broncos to win big at home. Kansas City Chiefs @ Arizona Cardinals The Cardinals are the best team in the NFC on paper, but have faltered the last few weeks. Kansas City is coming off two losses and needs a win to hold on to their playoff spot. Arizona is not the same team without injured quarterback Carson Palmer. Expect a close game in Arizona.
Take breaks! Your brain will stop taking information in if you don’t. Self-care is very important. Watch Netflix for a little bit, listen to music, take naps, whatever makes you woo-sah for a little bit of time will work. Get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy meal before your final! Postcards from Prato
T
his past week has been busy with final projects, papers and presentations; this is the last week of school before finals begin so it’s crunch time. To escape the work for a few hours my friend and I went to see The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 in Florence at an English movie theater that played the film with Italian subtitles. We were standing in line outside in the pouring rain waiting for our turn to buy tickets at the box office and we made it into the theater right in time to buy popcorn before the movie. There is one theater inside and it’s huge, seating over 300 people. It was so refreshing to hear other students speaking English, and for a minute it started to feel like home. Within an hour into the movie, the film stopped and everyone began to scream, because the theater obviously has to cut it off right at the good part. This is the first time I ever experienced an intermission at a movie theater. Twenty minutes later the film started back up again

and all of our hopes and dreams reconvened. I’m so excited for the second part of Mockingjay to come out. The Hunger Games is one of my favorite series so I was so happy to be able to see it when it came out in Italy. This past weekend I went on a class trip to the city of Bologna. Bologna has porticoes, which are covered walkways that have been used for over one thousand

years and were definitely beneficial because it was raining. I learned that the porticoes are used for protection from the weather. There are many reasons as to why these were built, one of them being that Bologna was crowded due to the University (the largest university in Italy) and trade businesses; therefore, bigger buildings were needed and with the use of the wooden
or brick beams used by the porticoes, officials were able to add extra space extending he buildings outward onto the street. My favorite part of Bologna is the whispering wall. There’s a section in the city with brick pillars and if one person stands against the wall and talks, another person facing the opposite pillar can hear you! It almost sounds like you’re talking to a person that is stuck in the wall, and you can really freak people out who are just standing by. Christmas is just around the corner, and Italy has begun putting up lights and Christmas trees around the city, making everyone that much more excited! While Italy is getting excited for Christmas, the Americans had our own Thanksgiving feast. The school had a thanksgiving lunch on Thanksgiving Day for all of the students, faculty and the mayor of Prato! It was so nice to have everyone together and be able to share this holiday with people who have never experienced a Thanksgiving lunch before. I’m so thankful for the professors I have, and this experience.

__________________________________ While it’s easy to get hung up on the upcoming finals week and the end of the semester, let’s not forget the wonderful string of holidays that are awaiting us as well! With great company as people travel home and even greater food ready to be devoured, some students have announced to their families that they are bringing a plus one to the festivities. Whether the families expected it and this significant other is already integrated into the family or you’re introducing them to the family for the first time, why not opt for a couple look together? It’s a nice throwback to the moms that always bought you and your siblings matching footy pajamas for Christmas but in a much more fashionable sense because you both choose the outfit. With everything happening
in a rush and there are other things to worry about besides having your significant other asking you what to wear, just tell them to match your outfit and call it a day. There are ways to take the same foundational pieces of an outfit and tailor it to both you and your significant other. It’s a safe option when you’re worried what you’re supposed to wear or what is to be expected to wear at these gatherings. This option is more appealing to the cheesier couples on campus but it’s the holiday season! If there was a designated time during the calendar year to be cheesy it would be from Thanksgiving to New Year’s. It’s a time when you’re surrounded by family you don’t get to see very often and be crazy, and they may already have their own cheesy traditions.
Here are two couple looks for the holiday season for you all to try: 1. Same Pattern, Different Looks: Plaid—who can’t pull out a plaid shirt out of their closet right now? It’s a fall/winter staple and comes in all different colored patterns. Most people are bound to have a variety of colors in their closet so start out with the color scheme of the plaid shirt with your significant other. They don’t have to be in the same exact shirt, just the same colors represented in it. To get over the more casual sense of this look, grab a warm knit sweater to go over it, it adds depth and a little more formal-ness. You can have the same color, but if you’re not about the cheesy level of it, then just opt for the same designed sweater. For the women, wear a nice pair of
khaki or black skinnies and throw on your favorite booties. Add some more feminine touches with an oversized knitted scarf, a simple crossbody bag and some cute earrings. For the men, finish off the look with some nice khakis, nice leather sneakers and a thinner scarf to keep your neck warm. 2. Same Item, Different Styling: Pea Coat—Most likely this cold weather staple is also in both of your closets because it’s popular for both sexes. For the women: Pick out your favorite holiday dinner dress and some-colored stockings underneath. If you are travelling outside, double up on the stockings and/or wear matching knee-high socks on top. Choose loafers or heels, whatever your preference and minimal accessories. For the men: Grab a nice

for some warmth and depth underneath your pea coat. My recommended shoe for this outfit is an ankle-styled shoe with wool fabric. It’s clean and the wool resonates well with the season.
