This week, SCOPE finalized the contract to add K Flay to the Spring Concert. K Flay, who plays guitar, composes music, and DJ’s, will be added to the concert as a DJ and MC to keep the crowd pumped up in-between bands. K Flay describes her mixes as hiphop, indie rock, and electronic music in a blender, and she will certainly be a performer who is sure to entertain. The Spring Concert line-up is now K Flay, Travie McCoy, Jay Sean, Cobra Starship, and 3OH!3. Make sure you come on out on Apr. 30 for a fantastic time! Hagfish The Hagfish or the “slime eel” is probably one of the oddest sea creatures that you will ever encounter due to the

History of Baseball & Opening Day
The origins of baseball have been the subject of debate for more than a century. The sport, as well as the modern bat, ball and running games, and cricket and rounders were developed from earlier folk games. The roots of baseball are English, but similar games have also been played in other parts of the world. Americans played a version of the English game rounders in the early 1800’s which they called “Town Ball.” Early forms of baseball had a variety of names, including “Base Ball,” “Goal Ball,” “Round Ball,” and “Base.” One version of the game involved teams pitching to themselves and runners went around the bases in the opposite direction of today’s game play. A batter was called out after three strikes as it is today. Evolution of the game that became modern baseball is unknown before 1845. The Knickerbocker Rules describe a
game that they had been playing for some time. In 1845, the Knickerbocker Club of New York City began using Elysian Fields in Hoboken to play baseball due to the lack of soft grounds on Manhattan. In 1846, the Knickerbockers played the New York Nine on these grounds in the first organized game between two clubs. A plaque and baseball diamond street paving’s at 11th and Washington Streets commemorate the event. By the 1850s, several Manhattan-based members of the National Association of Base Ball Players were using the grounds as their home field. In 1865 the grounds hosted a championship match between the Mutual Club of New York and the Atlantic Club of Brooklyn that was attended by an estimated 20,000 fans and captured in the Currier & Ives lithograph “The American National Game of Base Ball.” In 1857, sixteen clubs from modern New York
City sent delegates to a convention that standardized the rules, essentially by agreeing to revise the Knickerbocker rules. In 1858, twenty-five including one from New Jersey founded the first official association, but the National Association of Base Ball Players is conventionally dated to have formed in 1857. It governed through 1870 but it scheduled and sanctioned no games. In 1869 the first openly professional baseball team formed. Earlier players were nominally amateurs. The Cincinnati Red Stockings recruited nationally and effectively, toured nationally, and no one beat them until June 1870. Opening Day is the beginning of a new Major League Baseball season. Busy Weeks at the Beckerman

April is a big month for banquets, formals, and of course the Alumni Scholarship Ball. This year the Scholarship Ball will be held in the Beckerman Recreation Center on Saturday, Apr. 17. Therefore, the Rec center will be closed on Apr. 17. All courts will be offline on Apr. 15 and Apr. 16 as well in order to set-up for the ball. We apologize for any inconvenience. The facility and courts will all re-open on Sunday, Apr. 18 at regular hours. In other news, the Spring Get Fit Charger Challenge is coming to a close with the final weighin this Friday, Apr. 16 from 8 am to 5 pm. To all those who participated, I hope you reached your fitness goals. Good effort and keep up the healthy lifestyles. As a reminder, Group X classes on Wednesdays have changed dramatically. Each week there will be Cardio Box at noon, Spinning at 4:30 pm, and a different schedule of any evening/night classes that may be going on. So stay
up-to-date by checking out the website weekly. In REC Sports news, season 4 is comfortably underway. The competition is enthused, even energetic in the various indoor soccer leagues. If you are looking for a good sporting event to watch come check out any nighttime intramural indoor soccer game at the Beckerman Recreation Center. Perhaps all the positive intensity and interest is a sign of the soccer fever that is beginning to sweep the globe as the 2010 World Cup in South Africa approaches. Whatever the reason, the indoor soccer leagues put soccer as a contender for most popular sport of the season. Of course the softball, 6v6 volleyball, and roller hockey leagues are just as strong. As the weather blossoms, softball is becoming a favorite past time in the sun. The 6v6 volleyball leagues are as vibrant as ever. Even roller hockey has a solid following in this, its debut season. All in all, April is a busy month for the Beckerman Recreation Center, so don’t miss out on all the action!

In turn, the pitchers who start on Opening Day are usually recognized throughout the baseball world as their teams’ best starting pitchers. Here are some baseball opening day fun facts. On Opening Day in 1907, the New York Giants faced off against the Phillies at New York City’s Polo Grounds after a heavy snowstorm. When the Giants fell behind, disgruntled fans began flinging snowballs onto the field, forcing the umpire to call a forfeit in the Phillies’ favor. On the first day of the 1910 season, William Howard Taft became the first president to throw the ceremonial first pitch. Since then, every president besides Jimmy Carter has thrown at least one ceremonial first ball for Opening Day, the All-Star Game, or the World Series. There has only been one no-hitter in Opening Day history. Cleveland pitcher Bob Feller, then just 21 years old, threw it
against the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park on April 16, 1940. Boston Braves fans sat down to an unpleasant surprise on Opening Day in 1946. The outfield stands had recently received a fresh coat of red paint, but cold, damp weather had prevented it from drying. Hundreds of angry, paintstained spectators marched to the Braves’ offices. The team agreed to pay their cleaning bills and made a public apology in a newspaper advertisement. Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier on Opening Day in 1947, becoming the first African American to play for a Major League team. The 28-year-old made his debut at Ebbets Field, playing first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers. Hall of Famer Tom Seaver has started the most Opening Day games in history—11 for the Mets, three for the Reds and two for the White Sox. I hope that everyone enjoys this year’s baseball season and now that you all know a little bit about the history of this American pastime, you can fully enjoy each and every game these coming weeks.

On Tuesday, Apr. 6, Barry Drake came to UNH to give a lecture, “60’s Rock: When the Music Mattered.” Barry Drake has often been called a walking encyclopedia of Rock and Roll. The lecture was very informational with many pictures, video clips, and songs from the 1960’s. Barry Drake went through then ten years that span the 1960’s in the hour and twenty minute lecture. Of course Barry could have gone on for longer, but he gave everyone the basics.
Barry talked about when the Beatles invaded American music for the first time and how American music retaliated with some interesting choices of singers. Also, how the Beatles invaded American music for the second time during the start of the hippy era towards the end of the 60’s. After the lecture was over most people went back to their rooms and played a bunch of music from the 60’s because they didn’t realize how much they actually knew from the era. Barry Drake’s 60’s lecture was amazing and SCOPE did a great job planning this event.

Chinese Coal Carrier Leaking Oil Near Great Barrier Reef

On Apr. 4 the Shen Neng 1, a Chinese coal carrier, ran aground near the Great Barrier Reef. At the time of the incident, the ship had veered nearly fifteen kilometers off course. This resulted in a spill of three kilometers by one hundred meters, and while this is considered small scale, there is still the potential for the entire 950 tons of fuel and 65,000 tons of coal to spill if the ship experiences any massive structural failure. In an effort to clean up the spill as quickly as possible to prevent any effects on the reef itself, planes have been spray-
ing chemical dispersants on the oil slick. Currently, authorities do not know whether the spill will have any ill effects on the reef and the overall ecology, but everyone agrees that any pollution of the Great Barrier Reef is too much. Human impact on the reef is already apparent due to climate change and toxic farm chemicals, and that is partly why authorities now take dangers to the Great Barrier Reef so seriously. The Great Barrier Reef covers 133,000 square miles along Australia's northeastern coast, and in addition to being the world's largest living organism, it is also an important tourism generator for Australia. These factors made this spill a huge
issue to Maritime Safety Queensland, who are now considering requiring pilots throughout the entire shipping channel near the Great Barrier Reef. This is an effort to eliminate future spills. Conservationists warn that there will be more spills, citing that last year there was a spill near Moreton Island and Sunshine Coast beaches, and with newly tapped natural gas and coal resources, more ships will be in this area than ever before. This will be putting this great natural wonder at higher risk. The Australian government will continue to monitor the oil slick and determine the best methods for safe removal, both for the ship and the Great Barrier Reef it endangers.

Apple Sells Thousands of iPads

Few outside of Apple have seen an iPad in person, but that hasn't stopped a rush of preorders for the touch-screen tablet device. Sources have told The Wall Street Journal that Apple has sold 300,000 iPads since Mar.12 – iPad launch day – alone. Apple could end up selling more iPads in the first three months than original iPhones sold the first three months after its debut, according to those sources. Launch day sales num-
bers are a big indicator of just how successful the product launch proved to be. That’s part of the reason analysts like Gene Munster clamor to be the first to guesstimate initial sales figures. Munster estimated that up to 700,000 iPads had been sold on the iPad launch day. That turned out to be wrong. Apple says that 300,000 iPads were sold through their online pre-orders, Apple stores, and partner sales. Apple is coming down to the wire on striking content deals for the iPad. Negotiations are ongoing
between Apple and media companies for discounted TV shows via iTunes, according to sources. Partnerships between Apple and newspapers, magazines, and textbook publishers are also still yet to be cemented, and have "been put on the backburner" in favor of other types of content. Besides content, some accessories for the touchscreen device are also a little behind schedule. Both the keyboard dock/charging station and the 10W USB power adapter won't be available until May.

tional Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association, has won the Reds Bagnell Award from the Maxwell Football Club of Philadelphia, the Pat Summerall Award for excellence in football broadcasting, and five CableACE awards as cable’s best sports host. He was voted “Best Cable Sportscaster” three times by “The Cable Guide” and has received 10 Emmy nominations as best sports host. Prior to ESPN, Berman worked in radio for WERI in Westerly, R.I., and WNVR in Waterbury, Conn. He graduated from Brown University in 1977 with a B.A. in history, and has since been inducted into the Brown University Athletics Hall of Fame, and received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from his alma mater in 2007. Since Craig Mortali’s
internship at ESPN in 1983, and his graduation from UNH in 1984 with a B.S. in communication, the award-winning producer has spent his entire professional career at the world-renowned sports network, participating in the company’s development from a niche channel in the infancy of cable television to a media giant and one of the nation’s preeminent sports brands. While his specialty lies in documentary and longform production, Mortali also has experience in live studio and field-production for shows including SportsCenter, NFL Gameday, NFL Primetime” and Outside the Lines. He has won six Emmy Awards while at ESPN, and his recent documentary, Triumph and Tragedy: The Ray Mancini Story, won the 2008 CableFAX Program Award for “Best
Sports Show.” As an undergraduate at UNH, Mortali worked for WNHU-FM as a sportscaster, talk-show host and disc jockey. Mortali also served as the radio station’s public relations director and sports director during his junior and senior years, respectively. When the UNH football program was reinstated in 2009, Mortali was invited to return as the play-byplay voice of the UNH Chargers. He was recognized with the UNH Distinguished Alumni Award in 2002 and named Executive in Residence by the UNH Management of Sports Industries Program, where he serves on the advisory board. The talk is sure to be an exciting and educational event for all who come; it will be held on Thursday, Apr. 15 at 7:00pm in the Charger Gymnasium.
Woman Attacked at Southern By ERIN ENNIS

Students at Southern Connecticut State University were caught off guard Friday morning when an email reported the sexual assault of a female on the university’s campus. The crime scene, a supposed parking garage which is normally empty late at nights, had always been considered safe by both students and campus security. "I don't really like to walk by myself, but I've never really had a problem with it," explained freshman Melissa Gorman. "But usually I walk with friends." The woman, who was not a student of the university, was attacked last Thursday night. Ham-
den police have arrested a suspect and are investigating evidence in the crime. "Once you're on campus I feel like you're pretty safe, it's a rough area, so we don't really leave much unless we go downtown," said sophomore Brett Lamotta. Like the University of New Haven, Southern Connecticut State University has large, blue emergency posts with red buttons for immediate police contact. "My mom told me just to be safe and everything and don't walk around at night because New Haven is a pretty bad town," added Lamotta. Most students that spoke on the issue said they would still continue to feel relatively safe on campus, but they would remain cautious. Authorities and students
do not see completely eyeto-eye on the actual events of the attack. Authorities are still reporting that the attack occurred in a parking lot while students, faculty, and most university officials are reporting the attack to have happened in the parking garage. The parking garage and the parking lots are equally well lit at night, although police suspect the emptiness was probably a contributing factor in the attack. No information has been released about the identity of the attacker or any possible relationship between the suspect and the victim has not been mentioned. Hamden police, SCSU campus police, and other officials are continuing to gather information about the nature of the sexual assault.

the night went well with lots of great student performers, some doing well known songs and others their own original music. Thursday was the annual Battle of the Bands, sponsored by MEISA. Eight bands took part in the competition: Sounds Like Spring, Ja Mustache Eddie’s, Casting Call, The Day Spring, Robbing the Vatican, Speak In Verse, Peter Pann, and As It Unfolds. It was a great event displaying some of the great student talent found at UNH. As part of the competition, each band performed a cover of a Lady Gaga song, to the great amusement of the audience. It was a close contest, but the winner was As It Unfolds. On Friday, SCOPE brought in Dancing Heads, another opportunity for students to make their own
videos. This time, students were placed in front of a green screen and wore green smocks so that only their head was visible to the camera. They then bobbed along to the music as their head was placed on an animated body. Once again students left with a DVD to commemorate the evening. When Saturday arrived it was time for the annual Rock’N’Roll Week Concert, held in the bookstore parking lot. The opening group was As It Unfolds, the winners of Battle of the Bands. The band is a local metal/alternative group with two members who are students at UNH. In total, the group has five members; Aaron Fife(Lead Vocals/Guitar), Frank Rodriguez(Scream Vocals), Jesse Morin(Guitar), Brennan DiLernia(Bass), and Ryan Weil(Drums/ Vocals). The group was
followed by the headliner, Addison Station, a pop/ rock group out of Manchester, CT. The band and its four members, Trent Gerbers, Jeff Kenniston, Jon Coates, and Kyle Dunnack, have been gaining notoriety as they tour the northeast. It was a great show that filled the campus with music for one night. Students who attended the event were given free Rock’N’Roll Week t-shirts and a ticket for a prize drawing at the end of the night. Given away were numerous movies, an Xbox 360, and an electric guitar. In all, Rock’N’Roll week continued to prove itself to be a great tradition at the University of New Haven. Credit should be given to the SCOPE Special Events Committee and all of the students who helped make this week a success.

Head over to good ol' Springfield, Vermont, where a Massachusetts man drove himself to a Vermont prison to serve a two-day sentence for driving under the influence of alcohol. Funny… every seat was empty. So I went and got my breakfast. The lines were incredibly long, but the food was way above par. There was a full sandwich bar, plenty of hot eggs and pancakes, and prime rib. That’s right, prime rib. I didn’t have to ask a single employee for cream cheese (my usual Sunday
morning question) and there was plenty of fresh fruit and yogurt. Employees were outstandingly polite and there were tons of them working…the usu-

Frankly, even as a senior, I’m sick and tired of seeing “prospective students and parents” treated better than the students already here. I’ve never had prime rib on a Sunday before, let alone a piping hot breakfast. I’ve never been told that I “have” to sit somewhere so parents can sit in the better section… and then been pushed and squeezed into seats because the people in question aren’t even informed. Ignoring a few select employees (Willie, for example) I have never been treated with an enthusiastic “good afternoon” when I entered the cafeteria. It
seems as if the cafeteria only wants to make itself SEEM better than it normally is, plastering this gigantic façade over the face of Bartels and our campus dining. Instead, maybe the focus should be put back on the students that are already here and that already love campus. We can be the voice to the students. I want my non-supershowy brunch back. Besides, if a parent decides to keep their child from the University of New Haven over cold pancakes… well…that would be pathetic at best. College education is about classes and academics, not prime seating. Stop catering to the next generation of UNH students when there is still 2 months left for ours.

Sunday morning I woke up late (a HUGE change for me) and struggled to get ready for brunch at noon. I had work for The Charger Bulletin at 2 and I really needed something big for breakfast. Now, I am normally a big fan of brunch on campus: the food is never as bad as during the week, it’s never crowded, and I have a pretty nice selection…so why should I have expected something different? I walked downstairs on Sunday to find the entirety of Bartels swarming with parents. I had completely forgotten about the freshmen early registration event and grimaced at the

Experiential Education: Golden Boy or Spoiled Brat?

The University of New Haven prides itself on being a leader in experiential education; so much so that it has both a department and a club dedicated to furthering this idea. Both of these organizations hold wonderful programs that aid students in developing their careers. That said, it seems like not a day goes by that I don’t hear a student complaining about either organization. But why, exactly, is this? It’s because experiential education is the UNH equivalent of the high school football player who gets passing grades. Not because he deserves them, but so that he can play in the big game. Experiential Education holds the coveted “fa-
vorite child” spot. Every organization on campus must have their design approved if they want to get t-shirts made, and one of the requirements is that the shirt says “University of New Haven” on it. That is, unless you want to make LIFE shirts for the XE Club. Want to publicize your event? That’s fine, just get it approved and you can put it on any of the bulletin boards on campus. Oh, but if you’re part of EE, don’t bother getting it approved…and feel free to put it on the walls, doors, and windows. The university also has a strict policy against sidewalk chalk because it can become sunbaked into the cement. Strict, that is, for everyone but EE. Need some setup time for an event? Take an hour or two. Heck, if you’re EE take the afternoon and evening the day
before too. And if you want to reserve a room for your event, it’s first come first serve. Although as we all know, the Board of Governors can kick you out. Seems EE acquired that power too. See a pattern? I don’t mean to hark on experiential education, but the administration needs to realize that students notice when they play favorites. I’ve lost track of the number of times I’ve heard a student ask, “how come they can do that but we can’t?” If policies are going to be enforced then they need to be enforced all of the time for everyone. Otherwise, sooner or later, the kids that keep getting slapped on the wrist are going to get together and jump the teacher’s pet at recess.

Fast Food Cut from Afghan Military Bases

Soldiers looking for a comforting snack from home may have to wait until they get back in the states. The U.S. Military is taking steps to remove fast food chains from its bases in Afghanistan. Military officials feel that these restaurant outlets are consuming valuable resources like water, flight, power, and convoy space. Axing extras is part of the plan to run a more efficient military campaign. “This is a war-zone – not an amusement park,” Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Hall wrote in a blog entry earlier this year.
Large bases like Bagram and Kandahar are home to several U.S. chains including Burker King, Pizza Hut, T.G.I. Fridays, Orange Julius, and Dairy Queen. According to Hall, these luxuries make it more difficult to transport essential supplies to combat outposts and forwarding operating bases. Other proposed cuts include fewer canned and bottled items coming into Afghanistan, as well as fewer entertainment programs. The fast food restaurants continue to attract winding lines of U.S. soldiers, but their contracts are not expected to be renewed when they expire.

Ultimate Frisbee Tournament to Benefit Breast Cancer

Students in the MG 475 Event Management class will be putting on an Ultimate Frisbee Tournament on Saturday, Apr. 17 at 3:30pm on Kayo Field. The tournament is being held to benefit the Connecticut Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. All net proceeds will be donated to Komen Connecticut.
The Ultimate Frisbee Tournament will be made up of 10 teams of 5 to 7 players on each team. It will be a double elimination tournament, guaranteeing every team two games. The winning team will score the big prize of the day, a catered backyard BBQ provided by Texas Road House. Texas Road House jumped on board with the Ultimate Frisbee Tournament to become the presenting sponsor. Road
House will be setting up a tent and providing the food all afternoon for participants and spectators. They will also be bringing their mascot Andy the Armadillo to provide some entertainment for everyone. Besides the Road House food, spectators at the event can look forward to a slew of great door prizes, including an iPod Touch. The tournament is coming up quickly and is looking to be a great time for both participants and spec-
tators. Anyone from the UNH community who is looking for a fun day of Frisbee, some great food, and amazing prizes should come to Kayo Field at 3:30 on Apr.17. An information table will be set up in Bartels Hall from Monday Apr. 12 to Thursday Apr. 15, 2 to 4 p.m. on each day. Registration to play in the tournament can be done by visiting the table. The Discovery Space Shuttle launched last week to complete one of the final missions for NASA’s shuttle program. In a pre-dawn liftoff on Apr. 5, seven astronauts departed from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Two days later, they arrived at the International Space Station to drop off thousands of pounds of equipment, including science experiments, an extra sleeping compartment, and a darkroom to improve photography. The launch happened with only a few minor problems. Pieces of insulating foam flew off the fuel tank, and the main antenna failed after takeoff, but NASA officials said

Scheibel proceeded to settle on the fact that the suicide was “the culmination of a nearly threemonth campaign of verbally abusive, assaultive behavior and threats of physical harm toward Phoebe on school grounds by several South Hadley
students.” Sources say that the bullying went on for months, and Phoebe’s mother allegedly reported the behavior to school officials. However, South Hadley School Superintendent Gus Sayer tells People magazine that school officials were not aware of the bullying situation until a week before Prince committed suicide. Along with Mulveyhill and Narey, charges have been brought against Austin Renaud, 18, Ashley Longe, 16, Flannery Mullins, 16, and Sharon Chanon Velazquez, 16. These three minors’ indictments consist of statutory rape, stalking, criminal harassment, assault by means of a dangerous weapon, violation of civil rights with bodily harm, and disturbance of school assembly. Additional charges are pending, and arraignment proceedings will occur later this week. The Prince Family, who had moved to South Hadley from Ireland just last summer, has since moved out of the area and could not be reached for comment.

Bullying Causes Massachusetts Teen to Commit Suicide

Now, just as the previous news features have all made headline commotion, the word bullying is not mentioned without “Phoebe Prince” at the center of horrific discussion. Of course, this is not the way her parents had wanted to remember her; nonetheless Prince now joins the cluster of bullying statistics resulting in suicidal tragedies, coining the term “bullycide.” On Jan. 14, the fifteen year-old hanged herself after enduring months of bullying and harassment from classmates who tormented her in person, online, and via cell phone text messages. According to sources, Prince had been dating South Hadley High School football captain Sean Mulveyhill, 17, who unbeknownst to Prince, was simultaneously dating Kayla Narey, 17. Branded as an “Irish whore” and “Irish slut,” Prince was

I have to say I am absolutely freakin’ lovin’ this weather out lately: sunny, warm, and the quad is abuzz with activity. It seems like as soon as the weather gets nice the student population triples like squirrels coming out of hibernation: it’s a rather interesting phenomenon. You know I have to say, kudos to you SCOPE, I just want to give you a big ol’ thank you for all the work you do on the campus! Glenn and Lindsey, you are the wind beneath my wings and we sure will miss you next year. I don’t think students really realize how much work you do for the student body. Well, I do and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for it. <3
Negatives
You know what I would really like to see? Bananas in the morning at Bartels. They seem to have them at any and all other times during the day…but not breakfast…peculiar. Sometimes when I wake up I just get that urge to have a nice long juicy banana in my mouth, if ya know what I mean? Okay people, I’m tired of everyone’s bitching and whining and moaning. I get it, you don’t like all the decisions that the university makes. Hell, and I’m all with you that they sometimes implement them in really boneheaded ways. That being said I feel as if people would pull their heads out of their own self righteous asses they would realize there is stuff they can do about it.

Okay bad implementation on the new housing policy, that being said a lot of people could have avoided hassle by having their deposits turned in on time. Also, finding a place off campus is not as hard as you make it out to be and I’m sure if you go to ORL they could give you some friendly suggestions. Maybe not the most popular decision with the new lunch trays but a simple solution is found: buy some cheap Tupperware and use that instead of the trays. Good Tupperware is like a good suit in my opinion; it is very useful, lasts for years, and impresses the ladies. Last but not least and this one is all on you guys, surprise!! We are adults now so start acting it: an argument or discussion should not just consist of you saying “this sucks, everything’s bad, they just want to screw us over,” I don’t know, maybe making suggestions how to improve it? Or maybe give actual specifics so things can be fixed? Or maybe (and I know this one is really weird) go to talk to someone in administration about it? HOLLYWOOD -- Thankfully, the awards season is on the wane. Everyone is getting more than a bit sated over the “same old, same old.” However, with the summer season almost upon us, production is slowing down and news is harder to find (except, of course, when Paris, Lindsay and Britney are around). One piece of news about the awards: It looks like Oscar may be in February come next go-round. Don’t ask me why. Perhaps the powers that be feel they should be delivered earlier. Much news lately about the late Orson Welles. I had the pleasure, or I might say the displeasure, of working with him on some of his radio presentations. He wasn’t easy. And oh boy! When Orson got hungry, work stopped and the great Welles ate. We sat and watched. And oh how he did love to eat. Aside to Peter D. of Palm Beach, Fla.: Yes, that Keir Dullea now starring in the Castle series is the same Keir Dullea who played Lana Turner’s son in Madame X. And yes, I was the policewoman in that same pic. So, I came to know Keir well, and a nicer, more polite young man could not be found. I’m sure he has remained that way today. You also might remember Keir from 2001: A Space Odyssey and the cult film Bunny Lake Is Missing. I wish him all the best! Filmtown is mourning the passing of Fess Parker. He is being called King of the Wild Frontier, a Television Icon and a Gentleman. And that he was. I had the pleasure of knowing him when he came to New Orleans and I had a TV show there. He was a guest. So polite. So nice. But I might add with all that leather in all that hot weather, sometimes when he made an appearance it didn’t always smell like roses. Showbiz also mourning the death of June Haver, younger sister of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee. June had a nice career, but never as big as her sister’s. I met them both when I was just starting out, and young enough to be very impressed knowing STRIPPERS! Gypsy even showed me how to do it. She would say, “It’s all in the way you take it off.” Then she would take it off! Aside to Martina F. of Denver: You ask, “Who would I say is the bigger star, Sandra Bullock or Julia Roberts?” That isn’t easy. They both are excellent actresses, they both are beautiful women, they both are big at the box office. So I will let my readers decide whom they like best -- Julia or Sandra. “Duke it out, girls!” A younger generation will get a taste of Private Benjamin, and a new star, Anna Faris, will shine. The film was a big hit years ago when Goldie Hawn starred in the title role, and now viewers await the new version -and the new private. More about this when we get it. BITS ‘N’ PIECES: Kaley Cuoco. Remember the name. You’ll be seeing a lot of her soon. On the tube and on the big screen. ... Russell Crowe got his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, with all the brouhaha that could only come from Crowe. Interesting sidelight on this man: Every time you see him, he looks different.

On a related note, she also starred on the series Cavemen, which was based on the cavemen characters in the Geico Insurance commercials. Apparently Progressive didn’t mind her association with its c o m p e t i t o r, as they cast her in their most successful series of commercials to date. Q: I was sad to hear of the passing of actor John Forsythe, who seemed the consummate professional in every role he played. How are his Hollywood friends responding to his death? -- Patti T., via e-mail A : John’s former Dynasty co-star Joan Collins called him the “last of the true gentlemen of the acting profession. He will be greatly missed.” Kate Jackson, who worked with him on Charlie’s Angels, said: “He had a grace about him that was incredibly awesome. He was wonderful.” Heather Locklear, who also worked with him on Dynasty, said: “John was a gentleman in every sense of the word. He was a gifted actor who knew the true meaning of being gracious and kind.” John passed away on April 1 from complications of pneumonia after a four-year battle with cancer. He was 92. A: I’m sorry to be the one to tell you that the rumors are true. Merkerson recently told EW.com that she did indeed plan to leave the hit crime drama after 16 years on the show. She revealed: “It’s the end of my contract this year, and the story line has been so perfect. I’ve given it my best for 16 years. It’s time to move on. I’m doing other things, and this will be a great way to leave what has been an extraordinary gig.” Q: Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott seem to be fighting a lot this season on Oxygen’s Tori & Dean: Home Sweet Hollywood. The Yankees Win Series in Boston, Head to Tampa Bay

The New York Yankees, getting off to a fast 2-1 start against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, look to be a team that can pick up where they left off if the starting pitching and the bullpen hold up their end of the bargain. Some new faces in the Yankee lineup are Curtis Granderson, who had two homers and two RBI’s in the first series against Boston. A great signing by the Yankess to begin the 2010 regular season, Granderson is sure to show more of his talent in his primary position, centerfield. Nick Johnson for the most part being their DH and num-
ber two hitter doesn’t have a hit, but he has four walks and an on base percentage of .500. He has performed well thus far and set up Yankee hitters like Mark Teixeria, A-Rod, and Robison Cano. Marcus Thames is mostly a DH, but not a fundamentally sound left fielder for the Yankees and having Randy Winn is an extra piece for the Yankees skipper, Joe Girardi. However, if the Yankees want to be successful, it’s going to have to come through the starting rotation and the bullpen. Phil Hughes is the current fifth starter, but he’s better served in the seventh inning in the Yankee bullpen. Mariano Rivera’s looking like himself with two outstanding saves to
start off the season and Chamberlain could be the new Yankees closer, but it remains to be seen. Heading to St. Petersburg Florida, the Yankees will have their work cut out for them against the Rays, who focus on their speed first, pitching second. Evan Longoria, Joe Madden’s franchise third baseman and an enormous hitter who brings in tons of RBI’s, is hitting .417 and will be fundamental in the game. Jason Bartlett, hitting .385, is also a pretty solid player in the infield. It’s early, but this could be Carols Pena and Carl Crawford’s last year in St. Peter. Regardless, the Yankees will have to step up their game to topple the Rays.
The Mets Start Season Off Slow

An imperative for the Mets started off with them going (1-2) against the Florida Marlins, a team who made 103 errors last season and 254 over the past two. The Mets need to have Jose Reyes in the line-up, and thankfully he has started his workouts. The Mets and skipper Jerry Manuel have to have everything fall in place to have a productive season and make a postseason run. Hopefully with Jose Reyes coming back some of the weight, can be lifted off the Mets’
shoulders. The platoon at first base with Mike Jacobs and Fernando Tatis is still up in the air because the Mets are still waiting on the return of Daniel Murphy, but the team could use Ike Davis from the minor leagues to get some at-bats before the return of Carlos Beltran in the beginning of May. In this upcoming matchup against the Washington Nationals, skipper Jim Rigglemann doesn’t have a number one ace in his pitching staff. Steven Strassburg, the Nationals top pitching prospect, has been reported that he won’t pitch until June. The offense is ok with Adam
Dunn, Christian Guzman, and Ryan Zimmerman, which can cause big problems for the Mets. For the Mets to be successful, a helpful starting pitching staff is needed. So much is on the line for John Maine, Jonathan Niese, Mike Pelfrey, and Oliver Perez. Dan Warthen, the Mets pitching coach, has to develop these guys more to succeed in the big leagues. The Washington Nationals will be a very good test for the Mets to bounce back and it needs to start with the pitching and getting the ball to K-Rod in the late innings.

The Owls scored the first goal Thursday, but the Chargers answered back with nine consecutive goals through the first half. Laura McLean scored the first two for UNH, while Sarah Magnone scored

Over the next 15 minutes the Chargers went on a 6-0 run to take a 16-2 lead. The Owls added their third with five minutes left, before the Chargers scored the game's final three goals. Carolina Marrero, Magnone and Lieberman each scored to give the Chargers a 19-3 final score. Magnone led the Chargers with five goals
and two assists. She also grabbed three draw controls and two ground balls. Curry scored four goals and also grabbed three ground balls. Lieberman and McLean each scored three goals and handed out one assist, while Lieberman led the team with two ground balls and four draw controls. Maureen Spellman faced eight shots in the net for UNH. She recorded five saves and three goals against. Softball Overpowers UMass Lowell in NE-10 Doubleheader

WEST HAVEN - The No. 14 University of New Haven softball team added two more wins to their record on Saturday afternoon. The Chargers took two from NE-10 foe UMass Lowell to extend their winning streak to 18 and remain perfect in the Northeast-10 Conference. UNH rolled to a 10-0 win in game one. In game two, impressive defensive plays for the Chargers defined their 2-1 defeat over the River Hawks. New Haven improves to 22-2 overall and 12-0 in the conference, while the River Hawks slip to 12-16 overall and an even 5-5 in the NE-10. Game One The Chargers got a run in the first inning and kept the momentum in their favor as they picked up their first win of the day by a 10-0 margin. With Nicole Downs sitting in scoring position at second, Breanne Gleason knocked her in with a single to right field - the winning run.
Highlights of the shutout included pair of threerun home runs, one from Downs in the bottom of the second and the other produced by Gleason in the bottom of the fourth. Gleason's homer allowed the Chargers to take the necessary lead to end the game in five innings. Gleason was on the mound for the Chargers, allowing just one hit and four runners on base, while striking out six. She also led UNH at the plate, going 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Game Two The River Hawks found more success at the plate in game two, however notable defensive plays by the Chargers kept UMass Lowell off the board for most of the game. UNH jumped out to the early lead with a run in the bottom of the second - this is the 10th time New Ha-
