Chapleau Elementary & Secondary School will open its new Outdoor Learning Space on the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation
I
n the spring of 2023, member of our Northern Indigenous Youth Council of Chapleau High School, Lacey Pilon, Paradise Saunders and Keenan Domingue submitted a proposal to Indigenous Youth Roots formerly known as Canadian Roots Exchange for an Outdoor Learning Space to be built at Chapleau Elementary & Secondary School. The students worked on creating the proposal and drawings for an Outdoor Learning Space, where our K-12 students along with community partners and community members could unite and culturally reconnect through Indigenous teachings. The student leaders were thrilled when their proposal to build an Outdoor Learning Space was approved by Indigenous Youth Roots and they were awarded $150,000.00 to make their dream a reality. The tender for the project was awarded to Missinaibi Headwaters Incorporated, a local company owned by the Bignucolo family. The project build started in mid-July of 2024, and we are happy to report that the work will be completed by the end of September. The Outdoor Learning Space at Chapleau Elementary & Secondary School far exceeds the expectations of the students and staff alike. The creation of an Outdoor Learning Space has been a goal of the Long Term NIYC since 2017 and Forecast through the dedication Thursday of student leadership and High 22 recognizing student Low 9 voice, we are excited to Friday High 23 announce this goal is Low 10 now a reality.
