Spike in overdoses triggers alert about ‘extremely potent opioids’ in Chapleau area
A
spike in the number of overdoses in a First Nation community near Chapleau has police issuing a community safety alert. Nishnawbe Aski Police Services (NAPS) says there's been an "apparent high number of overdoses in and around Brunswick House First Nation." "Suspected overdose cases due to extremely potent opioids have been observed in a relatively short period of time," NAPS said. Brunswick House First Nation is on Highway 101 east of Chapleau. Police say that fentanyl and other potent substances are increasingly
present in NAPS communities. "Fentanyl is extremely potent and can be absorbed through the skin. Fentanyl can be various colours in powder form (blue, pink, brown, white), a clear patch or disguised in other ways (tablets, etc)," reads the advisory. "Community members are encouraged to possess naloxone and monitor those suffering from drug addiction. If you require assistance, contact emergency services immediately." The NAPS Brunswick House FN detachment can be reached at 705-8641732 or 1-888-310-1122.
