T
he NSSSAA (North Shore Secondary Schools Athletic Association) Championships were held recently in Wawa and both the Chapleau High School Junior Boys Volleyball team, and the Junior Girls Basketball teams earned the right to represent the East Division by finishing first and second overall respectively. It was an early start to the day with the bus departing for Wawa at 6 am and both teams on the court for their Long Term first match by 8:15 am. Forecast The girls met their first Thursday opponent Marathon and High 6 although the game was Low -1 close throughout the Friday entire contest the girls High -1 Low -4 were narrowly defeated Saturday High 6 Low -2 Sunday High 0 Low -6 Monday High -3 Low -7 Tuesday High -3 Low -4
by a score of 31-27. Had there been even a couple more minutes left on the clock the Raiders would have pulled ahead, they were starting to dominate the game and become more confident, but it was not to be. The Junior Boys played first as well at the other venue and were also matched up against Marathon. Despite leading for most of the first set, service errors prevented the boys from clinching a first-set victory with a final score of 25-23, and the letdown saw them lose the second set as well. Both teams were destined for the Consolation Final at 4 pm – a very long wait. The athletes took advantage of the break and watched some excellent senior action before taking to the court again for their final games. The boys played Michipicoten, a team they beat twice in the regular season, but were
unable to control the unforced errors and fell in straight sets. The girls stepped onto the court against Lake Superior and for the first three quarters it was all Stingers, the score a dismal 12-2 at the end of the third. The Raiders rallied however, and it was a determined team that began the 4th quarter with nothing to lose. The effort was incredible! With the junior boys and Miss McKnight cheering them on loudly from the sidelines, the girls scored eight unanswered baskets to bring them to victory and the bronze medals that were placed around their necks at the end of the game were well-earned. Both teams represent a lot of hope for the future of athletics at Chapleau High School, and Mr. Searle and Miss McKnight were both very proud of their teams. Go Raiders, see you on the court next season!!
