Three hundred young chess masters will participate in the 10th Franco-North-West Chess Tournament in Wawa

n Wednesday, May 20, 2026, no less than 300 young chess masters will gather in Wawa to participate in the 10th Franco North-West Chess Tournament. This competition, presented by Saint-Joseph School (Wawa), will bring together Francophone students from the following elementary and secondary schools: Ste-Marie (Azilda), Saint-Joseph (Blind River), Sacré-Cœur (Chapleau), É S C Trillium (Chapleau), Alliance St-Joseph (Chelmsford), St-Joseph (Dubreuilville), Georges Vanier (Elliot Lake), St-Augustin (Garson), St-Paul (Lively), Franco-Manitou (Manitouwadge), Notre-Dame-du-Sault (Sault Ste. Marie), Écho-
des- Rapides (Sault Ste. Marie), ÉS NotreDame-du-Sault (Sault Ste. Marie), Sainte-Anne (Spanish), St-Denis (Sudbury), Notre-Place (Val Thérèse), l'Escalade (Wawa), Saint-Joseph (Wawa), and ÉS Saint-Joseph. (Wawa) . The tournament will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Wawa Community Centre (3 Chris Simon Road, Wawa). Each participant will have the opportunity to play five games. The tournament features four categories: grades 3 and 4, grades 5 and 6 , grades 7 and 8, and grades 9 through 12. Prizes will be awarded in each category to the winning teams and the topperforming students.
Saint-Joseph Elementary and Secondary School (Wawa) is renowned for its students' passion for chess. This discipline allows students to develop their strategic thinking, memory, and problem-solving skills. The organizers of this friendly Francophone chess competition hope to encourage more students from northwestern Ontario and beyond to discover chess and to participate in events that bring them together to develop their skills in this game. Le tournoi se déroulera de 9 h à 15 h 30 au Centre communautaire de Wawa (3, chemin Chris Simon, Wawa). Chaque participant aura la chance de jouer à cinq parties. Le tournoi propose quatre catégories, soit : 3e et 4e année, 5e et 6e année, 7e et 8e année ainsi que 9e à la 12e année. Il y aura des prix dans chacune des catégories pour les équipes gagnantes et les élèves les plus performants. L'école élémentaire et secondaire Saint-
Joseph (Wawa) est réputée pour la passion de ses élèves envers le jeu d'échecs. Cette discipline permet aux élèves de faire appel à leur finesse stratégique, à leur mémoire et à leur capacité en résolution de problèmes. Les organisateurs de cette compétition francophone amicale souhaitent encourager un plus grand nombre d'élèves du nord-ouest de l'Ontario et d'ailleurs, à découvrir le jeu d'échecs et à favoriser leur participation à des événements leur permettant de se rassembler pour développer leurs habiletés dans ce domaine.
