Ontario Denouncing Harmful Trade Practices Targeting Lumber Exports Duties on softwood lumber hurting forestry industry and workers

OPP make arrest after 'large sum' stolen in Chapleau break-in

Chapleau resident is facing charges after a significant amount of money was stolen from another Chapleau resident's home in a break-in. The Superior East OPP say on July 28, shortly after 8 a.m., officers were notified of a break and enter at a residence on Connaught Street in the community of about 2,000 people northeast of the Sault. During the break-in, "a large sum of money was taken from inside the residence," the OPP said in a news release.
After an investigation, police say they were able to identify and locate a suspect. Michel Cote, 47, of Chapleau, was arrested and charged with: Break, enter a dwelling house Theft over $5,000 The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice on Sept. 18 in Chapleau. None of the allegations have been tested in court and the accused is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
Man facing assault charges after Walmart disturbance

Chapleau man is facing a number of charges after an incident at the Timmins Walmart. man who was a customer at the store was assaulted during the altercation, said police in a news release. A 44-year-old man from Chapleau was arrested at the scene. He is charged with assault - causing bodily harm, mischief, resisting a police officer, two counts of failing to comply with a probation order, and failing to comply with recognizance. The accused was released from police custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 22. None of the charges have been tested in court.

Chapleau Youth facing criminal charges

youth from Superior East is facing criminal charges following a domestic dispute. On July 12, 2023, shortly before 8:00 p.m., members of the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were notified of a threats occurrence on Pine Street in Chapleau. As a result of the investigation, a 15-yearold from Chapleau was arrested and charged with the following: Uttering Threats – Cause Death or Bodily Harm – Spousal – three counts Uttering Threats – Damage Property Sexual Assault on a Person Under 16 Years of Age Failure to Comply with Release Order – two counts Failure to Comply with Probation Order – two counts The youth was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in July 2023 in Chapleau. The identity of the accused is being withheld as it is protected under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA).
