INSIDE MONDAYS

Behind the Scenes: Our Faculty’s Ongoing Professional Development Journey Ms. Juliana Menezes Superintendent

Inside Mondays:

Faculty Development That Fuels Our Mission

As part of our commitment and partnership with families, this newsletter from the Superintendent offers a window into the meaningful work happening behind the scenes each week. Every Monday, our faculty engages in Professional Development sessions, led by different faculty members, focused on enhancing teaching practices, deepening collaboration, and ultimately supporting student learning and growth. Through these updates, we hope to keep our community informed and connected to the continuous efforts that enrich our students' educational experience.

Committed to Safety: Reviewing Our Lockdown Policy Educational Leadership

Safety is Chapel School's top priority, and preparedness is key. One critical aspect of maintaining a safe learning environment is ensuring that all faculty members are familiar with our school’s lockdown policy. Regularly reviewing the lockdown procedures with staff ensures that everyone knows their roles and responsibilities in the event of an emergency. This review helps clarify steps such as securing classrooms, accounting for students, communicating effectively, and following established safety protocols. When confident and well-prepared faculty members respond calmly and efficiently, reducing risks and protecting our students. Additionally, periodic reviews allow us to review the procedure and make refinements, ensuring our safety measures remain strong and effective. All faculty participate actively in these reviews and drills, reinforcing a culture of vigilance, teamwork, and safety.

ECEC Teachers Deepen Phonics Instruction

ECEC Coordinator and American Program Curriculum Coordinator

Early Childhood Education Centre (ECEC) teachers recently participated in a professional development session focused on strengthening phonics instruction through accurate pronunciation of letter sounds. The training highlighted three key elements of sound production: manner of articulation (how a sound is made), place of articulation (where it is produced), and voicing (whether the vocal cords vibrate). Teachers explored these concepts through demonstrations and videos that clarified differences between voiced and voiceless sounds and continuous versus quick, stopped sounds. They also explored tricky consonants and vowels, addressing common pronunciation challenges. A key focus was eliminating the schwa—the unstressed “uh” sound often added unintentionally (e.g., /buh/ instead of /b/). This hands-on session equipped educators with practical tools to improve phonics instruction, reinforcing the foundational skills students need to become confident readers, spellers, and writers.
