Dear Reader,
When Mr. Koolman first told us we were starting a poetry unit, I honestly wanted to groan. Writing poems sounded so boring and kind of embarrassing. The first thing we learned about were poetic devices like simile, hyperbole, personification, alliteration, and sensory diction. At first, all those fancy words just made my head spin. I didn’t really get why it mattered if something was a “simile” or just a regular comparison. But we kept practicing, and slowly it started to click.
The drafting process was probably the most frustrating part. We didn’t just write one poem and call it done, we wrote many, many, drafts. My first attempts were pretty rough. Every revision felt like starting over. There were moments where I seriously did not want to write anything anymore. But each draft did get a little better, and I started to actually see what made a poem feel meaningful.
By the end of the unit, something had changed. When I read my final poem out loud, I felt genuinely proud of it. It didn’t even feel like work anymore, it felt like I had made something that was mine. I never thought I’d say this, but free verse poetry kind of grew on me. All those drafts and confusing lessons were totally worth it, because in the end I learned that I actually have something to say and now I know how to say it.

Relaxing times
The water goes in and out, Making the same sound repeatedly. The soft ground under my feet, The salty wind hitting my face, Kids playing, Adults swimming.
Good relaxing times.
Beach Times
Running back and fourth on the sand, Building castles, cities, caves by the seaside that were destroyed by the small waves. Kids laughing And running as the water comes close.

Bruna Iannuzzi
Clever. Beautiful. Determined.

Perfect Holiday
Perfect holiday at the beach The soft hot sand Covering my feet
The sticky suncream Protects me from the sun As I jump into to have some fun
Cool salty waver Swallow me entirely Then I leave the water quickly Since I just spotted some ice cream

Snow has come
Go somewhere new Just for the snow
None of it in Brazil Just north of the world
The flakes on my tongue And on my hair as well Snow has come

Daniel Shitara Inglesi Student. Hard-working. Creative.

Hungry puppy
At the dinner table, The smell runs. The puppy begs food from the big ones. Maybe a mouthful of melon? A wonderful watermelon? Or an amazing apple? Either was tonight’s a food buffet! Wagging her tail, “Can’t wait for a gourmet meal!”
Blobs of absolute cuteness!
Flapping their fluffy flaps, Observing with their boba tea eyes, Laying peacefully on their bubbly bellies, They rest under the blue sky above, Plop plop plop, They hop around!
In the dark-blue, freezing sea, They kill their meal with a thrill! Swimming around like bubbles in a sparkling water drink! Aren’t they just so adorable?

Eduardo Fazzio
Soccer. Soccer. Soccer.
The moment of the Goal
(Cristiano Ronaldo)
The stadium is loud before the play begins.
Fans wave flags and shout his name.
The ball rolls slowly across the green grass.
I hold my breath.
Ronaldo watches it, focused and calm.
Then he starts running. Faster and faster.
His steps beat the ground like drums in the stadium.
He swings his leg and the ball flies forward.
For a second Everything feels quiet. We wait. He wait. Boom the net moves.
The crowd explodes.

The heart of morumbi
(São Paulo FC)
Red, white, and black fill the stands.
Flags wave high above the crowd.
Fans sing together loud and proud. We shout. We shout again. Drums echo through the stadium walls.
Morumbi feels alive on game day.
Every pass makes people stand.
Every shot makes hearts race.
When São Paulo scores, the stadium shakes with celebration.

Essence of the art
Some films flop, Some films sore Some films get ignored Then come back to score
Some films fail
To show passion or a soul While others prove The beauty of art
Some films are terrifying Others are romantic
But none get forgotten And they all leave a mark
Every film is someone’s favourite Doesn’t matter if its good. Films tell a story And the viewers tell one too
Rise and loss
I lost it all, But I might win the game It’s all a thing of luck
But I might double my salary again!
The last hand never comes. And I could win a home Or be forced to ask for a loan
Yet I never stop,
My mother is worried My children are scared. I do this for the glory And I bet on double pair
I just hit the jackpot! But I lost it all again My wife and children left me Even the dealer knows my name

Dungeon ahead, where shadows spin, Goblins fall and spiders thin. Gold in hand, to town I ride, Armed for DragonsI fought… I died
Score it… Win it
Soccer is the best Some players suck Score the goal And win the cup

Happy. Energetic. Talkative.

The
Prince
Neymar
The prince Who couldn’t be a king
Playing next to legends
Like Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo
It was difficult to stand out And difficult to play
Even then nobody could take the ball from him
Any other way

Ninety Minutes
Sample poetry of The game starts The ball rolls fast
People run around the grass
Number 9
Misses a goal from inside The crowd gets mad He gets really sad
The clock is running “Tick, tock, tick, tock”
Even though he missed a goal The crowd is cheering Because they are winning

Comporta
Comporta
A day by the sea
A sentimental sent in the air
Let the sun touch your skin
And let it kiss your skin with care
Waves crashing
Sand slipping through my toes
Waves rising once more
The wind whispering secrets
In the fabulous shore
One step closer to the sea
Cold water…
Only for a few to love I dive in all at once
To feel that chill again
Waves dancing
Sun shining
Whispers of the wind
Promises of the air
Since the day I began to love
The beauty of the sea
Especially Comporta
That takes you where you’re meant to be.
Winter in New York
NY
Glimmering lights
Everything white
A city that never sleeps
Even in -23 degrees
The city is a person… With never ending…
Feelings and memories. It comes to life, And marks each and every… One of our lives.
Times Square, Magic in the air. Sunset in the Summit, All cold and golden. Fifth Avenue, Frozen and fabulous.
Swaying, Sparkling, Skiline.
Where the lights…
Inspire you, And there’s nothing… You can’t do.

Julia D’Angelo

Chocolate
It sits in my hand simple but tempting wrapped in foil smells sweet like something baking
Melts in my hand making it very messy feels smooth and soft it’s gone fast but makes it all worth it
The chocolate melts in my tongue spreading the taste all over my mouth

She’s like sunshine in my day and I love her in every way

Swish and score
Basketball is a super fast game, Where teams try hard to win. Players dribble down the court, Then pass the ball again.
They shoot the ball into the hoop, And always try their best. They play defense and guard their man, With almost no time to rest.
The crowd gets loud, the clock runs low, The game is full of action. Basketball takes a lot of skill, And teamwork helps it happen.
Minecraft world
In a blocky world of endless land, Millions of players build by hand. They laugh with friends and spend their time
In a game of adventure, craft, and climb. Across the servers, far and wide, Some fight for power, side by side. Some farm for food and work all day, While others build huge worlds to play. A game where anyone can play
Alone or with friends, That world of blocks, both old and grand, Minecraft’s bright and creative land.

Sleepy. Surf. Calm.

Best session
Riding the waves, a surfer’s thrill, The ocean’s force, my heart to fill. The rain comes down, but I don’t care, For surfing’s my escape, my air. I paddle out
The waves are crashing I had the best sesion of my life

A gentle art
Its not a fight is a conversation
A physical chess
Deep motivation carries you the way Strengths meets leverage
And ego meets the floor
A gentle art where technique beats strength

Madeleine Iwarson
Cheerful. Kind. Supportive.

Books
I opened a book to escape for a while, to live in pages that weren’t mine. The story felt close— too close, almost, like it knew the things I never said. Line after line, it followed my thoughts, turning them into something I could finally read. And at the very end, I realized— the book was this poem.
Secrets
Not all secrets are dark— some are soft, almost gentle. Things we protect instead of reveal, afraid they might change once spoken out loud. I kept mine hidden, safe behind silence, where no one could reach it. But when I finally said it— nothing changed.
Except me.

Manuela Gurgel
Persistente. Deterimined. Kind.
Friendship stays
Inside jokes
Loud laughs
Messy, magical moments
No need to pretend
We all need a friend
Late night talks
Endless walks
You know my thoughts
Side by side
Through every season
We don’t need a reason
You are my safe space
We stick together like stars in the sky
In messy days
In quiet ways
In tears and smiles
That’s when friendship stays.

Midnight wsihes
Gifts, wraps, and ribbons
Bright, birthday gifts
Candles light
It’s almost midnight
Laughter everywhere
Best friends are there
Frosting on my fingers
Sweet on my lips
The night feels like magic
Time is a doorway calling my name
Soft, shining moments
wishes in whispers
Dreams come alive
BeautifuNo other day to compare 1,2,3
Happy birthday to me!

Confident. Beautiful. Persistent.

The Beach
Slat in my hair
Sand in my feet, Sunburned nose
But it still feels sweet, Waves crashing, i dont care, THE BEST KIND OF DAY
Just the beach, sun, and air.
Tanning Day
Golden sum upon my skin, Summer warmth slowly sinks in, A softer glow from deep within

Maria Valenttina Damaa

Winter Joy
Stay or Fly
Two birds on a wire
But one of them is tired
Should he fly and have fun
Or stay and save for a run
Two birds on a wire
I don’t believe that one of them is tired All I want is to have fun What couldn’t he make for the run?

Falling from the sky I see a snowflake the way I like! Cold is in my skin I am so ready to dig in Oh how I love snow A way that no one else could ever know!

Athletic. Nice. Friendly.

A simple beach day
The sun is warm, it feels just right
We sit around in golden light
We tan a bit, im next to you
We talk about stuff, not much just a few
Sand gets stuck on our feat
Its kinda rough, kinda neat
We jump in the pool, then out again
Then sit a laugh like its nothing big then
The sky is blue at least I think
Close our eyes dont even blink
The we head home at the end of the day
A successful beach day, simple in a way
Warm sand slipping through my hands, Waves whisper secrets to the land, Salt in the air, sun on my face, The ocean feels like my safe place.
The departure
The airport hums before the sun With rolling bags and people on the run Bright screens flicker, names and times
A thousand stories in silent lines
Boarding calls ring though the air
Hope and nerves are everywhere
My tucked clutched, window seat Racing heart, a steady beat
Suitcase packed, a world to see, New skies calling out to me, Every road a story to tell, In every place, a piece of myself. Though the glass, the planes align Wings stretched out on painted lines
Ready to chase the fading night
Or carry dreams to morning light

Rafaela Rodarte
Beautiful. Smart. Kind

When the sun meets the sea
when sun lays on water like a yellow ball on the ground
The warm sand between my toes
The cold breeze hits my face I hear the waves crashing into rocks
Kids laughing and playing The ocean is filled with people
Soon the sun touches the water
Like paradise

A plate full
A world full of flavors in a bite
Delicious well made food
There’s no denying that
With one big bite i’m half way through Chomp
Im as fast as a race car
Before you blink i ate the whole thing
And maybe even the plate
