Before & Afterschool Enrichment

SUPPORTING SCHOOLS, CHILDREN, FAMILIES

AND OUR COMMUNITY

As a thoughtful leader and best-in-class provider of education, wellness, youth development, and community building, the Channel Islands YMCA is one of the oldest, most nimble, and essential nonprofits in the Central Coast region. The history of our organization has been one of adapting to community needs and supporting our communities when they need us most.

As a parent, you know that the hours before, and after school are critical times for a child’s development. Before and after school care at the Y provides you peace of mind, knowing your children are safe and in an environment where the learning taking place at home and school, will continue. The Y partners with families to offer homework support, healthy snacks, physical activity such as games and sports, as well as arts, science and plenty of opportunities to try new things and make great friends. We do all of this while also making safety our number one priority.

Our enrichment programs provide a space for transformative learning experiences in a caring setting during critical after school hours. Our staff are carefully screening using standards set by the State of California, completing extensive training, and participating in ongoing education. We also understand the role that YMCA staff play in exposing youth to positive role models who build their self-esteem and sense of community. Located on school campuses, we provided age-appropriate and active learning environments using SCALED LEARNING™ curriculum.

After and Before School Enrichment Overview

YMCA child care provides opportunities for children to learn, grow, and thrive as they make their way from K-8th grade. We provide daily physical and educational activities like sports & recreation, homework and distance learning support to assist students in meeting teacher-assigned requirements; all while socializing with friends in a safe and healthy environment.

OUR PHILOSOPHY: The YMCA child care program goals are to provide an environment of safety, support, caring and fun. The program is there to develop the inner strength and character of the children involved. We want to help increase your child’s physical fitness and self-awareness. We want to demonstrate the importance of the 4 Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility. The Y childcare program will foster an appreciation for diversity and complement the child’s educational experience with a well-rounded curriculum. At the Y, we believe building strong kids and strong families will strengthen the foundation of our communities.

OVERSIGHT: Our programs are either licensed by the Community Care Licensing Division of the State of California, Department of Social Services or are governed by Extended Learning Opportunities Program by the California Department of Education in conjunction with local school districts. Our programs must comply with outlined regulations in the areas of the physical environment and safety, staff qualifications, supervision and staff/child ratios, administrative record keep requirements, programs and activities, food and nutrition, and more.

EVIDENCE-BASED CURRICULUM: SCALED Learning™, the Y’s holistic before and after-school curriculum, presents kids with new challenges as they reach each stage of development. It is designed to help kids grow in the classroom and out in the world through engaging in STEM, hands-on arts, literacy, career-connected learning, diversity and global education, social development, and fun!

QUALITY STAFF: Each location is supervised by a Site Director who is responsible for the overall operations of the program and is supported by additional staff based on the needs and size of the program. All staff meet or exceed education and experience requirements outlined by their governing body (i.e. Community Care Licensing). Each staff has completed background screening, including fingerprints and has over 40 hours of specific health and safety training (i.e. CPR, Child Abuse Prevention, and Supervision) at their time of hire.

ENROLLMENT & REGISTRATION: After registration at the YMCA or online, enrollment forms are completed on ePACT Network, a digital platform for collecting children’s emergency and medical information. Fees are based on enrollment rather than attendance. All payments are due weekly and made through electronic funds transfer on Fridays for the upcoming week.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: Annually, we receive support from hundreds of members, community leaders, and businesses who believe in our purpose and contribute generously to our Annual Campaign, investing in youth and families. Funds are distributed to families with a financial need in our community.

SCHOOL PARTNERSHIPS: Each of our locations are on school campuses or in connection with a partner school. We provide safe, supervised learning spaces in collaboration with our school partners. This ensures that families, schools, and the Y are all on the same page to best support kids.

SCALED LearningTM

The SCALED Learning™ Framework provides the structure for delivering high-quality enrichment across the school year. Each framework element includes developmentally aligned lesson plans, recommended dosage, and educator supports.

AT OUR BEFORE & AFTERSCHOOL ENRICHMENT LOCATIONS WE USE SCALED LEARNING™ DAILY.

The pillars of SCALED LEARNING™ are:

STEM: STEM lesson plans spark curiosity and encourage investigation, inquiry, and discovery while strengthening core academic skills. By experimenting, testing ideas, and solving real-world challenges, participants build critical-thinking skills and a love of learning that extends beyond the classroom.

CAREER-CONNECTED LEARNING: Activities highlight a wide variety of careers and the real-life skills they require, while encouraging youth to imagine their future selves. Through goal-setting, problem-solving, and reflection, participants connect their interests to potential career paths and develop the confidence to dream big.

ARTS EXPLORATION: Arts Exploration lesson plans invite youth to experiment with diverse art forms, materials, and media while building specific artistic skills. Projects may focus on exploring an art technique, studying an artist, or developing a particular skill. Emphasizing creativity and the artistic process over the final product, activities encourage self-expression, critical thinking, and an appreciation for the arts.

LITERACY ENRICHMENT: Literacy Enrichment lesson plans build on skills learned during the school day through engaging, hands-on activities that make reading and writing fun. Youth strengthen their skills by exploring stories, playing word games, and creating their own written or artistic works. With a focus on creativity and discovery, these activities keep learners motivated and confident.

ENRICHMENT ADD-INS: Enrichment Add-Ins extend the SCALED Learning™ Framework through optional siteplanned enhancements such as Nutrition, Service Learning, and Community Clubs. These activities promote healthy habits, leadership, and community connection while empowering youth to explore interests, collaborate with peers, and take ownership of their learning — creating a well-rounded, engaging, and youth-driven enrichment experience.

DIVERSITY & GLOBAL LEARNING: Diversity and Global Learning lesson plans invite youth to explore cultures, traditions, and celebrations from around the world while honoring the rich diversity within their own community. Activities highlight a variety of perspectives, ideas, beliefs, and customs through art, storytelling, games, and hands-on projects.

In addition to SCALED LEARNING™ we focus on the Y’s Four Values of Character. We stress the high importance of these values every day in all of our programs through formal lessons and teachable moments.

• HONESTY: Being truthful, fair and sincere.

• RESPECT: Respecting yourself, others, and the environment.

• RESPONSIBILITY: Being accountable and doing your best.

• CARING: Showing compassion and understanding toward others.

What families are saying...

“Our son has really enjoyed doing “Clubs” on Thursdays and he’s always excited for club presentation days. I love that he’s engaged, trying different things, but most importantly, I think it has been giving him a foundation for communication and public speaking. He’s so quick to get stage fright, but watching him participate with speeches, it is clear that this feels like a safe space for him”

“I needed to enroll my son in the YMCA after a big life change and shift in working hours. I was nervous to do so as I had been his primary caregiver. I need not have worried, it’s his second year and I am so thrilled and thankful for the program but mostly the staff who are warm, thoughtful and caring.”

“My son doesn’t want to go to school sometimes but when I remind him about going to the Y after school, he changes his mind about going to school!”
