“Can you imagine arriving in Luang Prabang like an old-world explorer on the Mekong? You’d hardly know a town was here at all—the trees hide everything,”

- said a fellow passenger aboard The Continental Cruise by Souphattra Hotels. As we gaze at the town from the water, the setting sun glints across the river in long copper strokes, and he’s right—the city seems to melt into its lush surroundings, much like the elegant cruise vessel we are standing on.

T he Continental Cruise is actually a pair of restored river barges—the Lao Brise Montagneuse and the Lao Riviere—each over 40 meters long and renovated with a soft palette of whites, greys, woven textiles, and warm wood accents. Their interiors feel like floating extensions of Souphattra’s boutique hotels: understated, comfortable, and crafted to complement rather than compete with the scenery. As the river breeze moves through the open decks, the boats feel airy and timeless, embodying the slow beauty of Luang Prabang.

Passengers can join one of two signature itineraries. The first—a two-hour sunset dinner cruise— invites guests to unwind as the sky shifts from orange to rose to deep violet. A glass of sparkling wine is offered upon embarkation, followed by a choice of Lao or Western set dinner. On deck, surrounded by handcrafted décor and the rhythm of the river, even a simple toast feels elevated. For those looking for a longer excursion, the five-hour Pak Ou Cave sightseeing cruise presents a deeper journey along the Mekong. The Pak Ou Caves, filled with thousands of Buddha images left by devotees over centuries, are set dramatically into the limestone cliffs. A Lao set lunch bursting with local flavors is served on the return trip, allowing travelers to enjoy both river and heritage at an unhurried pace.

As the sun lowers and the Mekong turns gold, the river takes on that same dreamy quality it had when we first set off. From the water, the city still appears half-hidden, tucked behind trees and softened by the evening light. And aboard this quiet, graceful vessel, it’s easy to feel like a traveler from another era, too, drifting toward a place that reveals itself slowly.

Sacrifice and Spirit

THE STORY OF LUANG PRABANG’S GUARDIAN ANCESTORS

In Luang Prabang, a pair of unusual figures with strange red faces, large mouths, and long, string-like hair is a common sight in shops, temples, and even on T-shirts. These eye-catching figures, known as Pou Yer and Ya Yer (Grandma and Grandpa Yer), are beloved by locals and hold deep cultural and spiritual

significance. Standing tall and covered in raffia, the figures are eye-catching and unique. Thick eyebrows line their foreheads, discs of silver and gold adorn their ears, and glint in the sun. Even though these figures are unworldly, they are cute and friendly, nothing threatening at all about them.

P ou Yer and Ya Yer are among the most revered figures in the mythos of Luang Prabang. They are believed to be the mythical founders and guardians of the city, and, according to some stories, the ancestors of all Lao people. These figures have their own entourage during the annual Lao New Year celebrations in April, where they are central to many key ceremonies. Alongside their golden lion child, Singkeo Singkham, they take part in a grand parade, and locals eagerly pour water on them, take photographs, and pluck a piece of raffia "hair," which is considered especially auspicious if you can grab one.

Laos’ myths have several versions of the origins of Pou Yer and Ya Yer. One legend tells of angels sent from heaven to save mankind during a flood. Stepping on bubbles, they created land, and their adopted son became the ancestor of the Lane Xang dynasty. Another folktale explains how the couple sacrificed their lives to cut down a giant tree that had kept Luang Prabang in darkness. It took them three months and three days to cut down the tree, which resulted in their deaths. The tree was said to be at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, and Luang Prabang grew from this spot. This act of selflessness solidified their status as the city's protectors. Regardless of the version, they are seen as embodiments of sacrifice, selflessness, and a willingness to help others, values that are celebrated during the New Year.

In Wat Aham, two banyan trees are said to house the spirits of Pou Yer Ya Yer. An outbuilding, known as Hor Thevada Luang (tower of the great spirits), serves as their shrine. The positions of guardianship are hereditary, and certain families living near Wat Aham have been entrusted with the duty of keeping and protecting Pou Yer and Ya Yer for generations. During the festivities, these families act as bodyguards, accompanying the figures and ensuring their safety and respect.

T he Lao New Year celebrations begin with a traditional ceremony in which Pou Yer, Ya Yer, and Singkeo Singkham are taken from their shrine at Wat Aham. The guardians are honored with offerings of alcohol, cooked chickens, and fruit, while prayers are chanted and candles are lit. Adding to the tradition's sacredness, the identities of the individuals who don the Pou Yer and Ya Yer costumes are kept secret. After donning the costumes, they are escorted by drummers and monks to a sacred spring

upstream from the old bridge, where they collect holy water. This water is then poured onto the Prabang Buddha statue, marking the first washing of the Buddha and the start of the New Year festivities.

T he significance of Pou Yer and Ya Yer is evident throughout the celebrations. As they join the parade, they perform dances to bring luck and joy to the people. One such dance takes place at Wat

Xieng Thong on the third day of the Lao New Year, while Wat Aham and its neighbor, the colossal Wat Visoun, also host dances in honor of the guardians. Locals gather to watch, clap, and laugh, creating an atmosphere of joy as Pou Yer and Ya Yer dance in front of the altar.

Pou Yer Ya Yer and their story are a compelling part of the religious and cultural history of Luang Prabang.

Every year, their presence during the Lao New Year festivities brings joy, blessings, and a sense of unity to the people of Luang Prabang. At the end of the celebrations, when everyone is sated from dancing and throwing water, the guardians are quietly returned to their boxes in Wat Aham to rest for another year, awaiting their next annual procession.

关于波耶与雅耶的起源，在老挝流 传着多个版本。一说他们是洪水灭世时 天界派来拯救苍生的天使，踏水成陆，后 其收养之子成为澜沧王朝始祖。另一则 民间传说则讲述这对夫妇为砍倒遮蔽琅 勃拉邦天空的巨树而牺牲性命。历时三 月零三日的砍伐耗尽他们的生命，传说 中巨树就位于湄公河与南康河交汇处， 正是琅勃拉邦城古城发源的起点。这场 无私献祭奠定了他们作为城市守护者的 神圣地位。无论何种传说版本，波耶与雅 耶始终被视为牺牲、无私与助人精神的 化身，在新年庆典中被世代传颂。

在Aham寺内，两棵菩提古树相传 栖息着波耶与雅耶的灵魂。一座被称为" 霍提瓦拉琅"（伟大神灵之阁）的配殿，便 是供奉这对守护神的圣所。守护者的职 位世代相传，Aham寺附近的一些家族 被赋予代代守护波耶与雅耶神像的使 命。节庆期间，这些家族成员便化身护 法卫士，伴随神像巡游，确保其安泰与 尊荣。

波耶与雅耶的重要意义贯穿于整个 节庆活动。当他们加入巡游队伍时，会跳 起赐福之舞为民众带来吉祥与欢愉。其 中一支舞蹈在老挝新年第三日于香通寺 举行，而Aham寺与其毗邻的宏伟寺庙 Visoun寺也会举办敬奉守护神的舞蹈 仪式。当地民众聚集观礼，击掌欢笑，当 波耶与雅耶在神坛前翩然起舞时，现场 洋溢着喜庆祥和的氛围。

波耶与雅耶及其传说，是琅勃拉 邦宗教与文化史中极具魅力的篇章。每 年老挝新年庆典期间，他们的降临都为 琅勃拉邦人民带来欢乐、祝福与凝聚之 力。当庆典尾声来临，众人于舞蹈泼水间 尽兴而归时，守护神像便被悄然被送回 Aham寺的神龛之中，静候来年再度巡 游人间。

THE RITUAL PATH OF POI SANG LONG

Many a travel writer has put pen to paper to wax lyrical about the journey being more important than the destination. But in the case of Mae Hong Son, the two are equally matched. The diminutive provincial capital is perched at the top of a road fabled among motorcyclists, who popularized it as the Mae Hong Son Loop, a 600-kilometer stretch of sinuous tarmac that boasts an incredible 1,864 bends, many of them hairpins.

B ordering Shan State in Myanmar, the area had been settled by the Shan, or Tai Yai as they are also known, long before the present-day borders of Thailand were established. The earliest known mention of a town called Mae Hong Son appears in 1830 transcripts detailing a royal expedition from Chiang Mai to round up wild elephants. A century later, ethnic groups such as the Lisu from eastern Tibet, the Lahu and Yao from China and Myanmar, and the Haw Chinese Muslim traders from China’s Yunnan province migrated into the region.

D espite its small size, the town of just 7,000 inhabitants is still distinctly different from anywhere else in Thailand. This is particularly evident in the temple architecture. Like the Thais, the Shan are predominantly Buddhist, but their temples are distinguished by elaborate tiered roofs. Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu is a fine example. Perched upon a hilltop and offering a fabulous vantage point from which to view the town, the temple

is lavishly decorated. Wat Jong Kham and neighboring Wat Jong Klang, next to a scenic lake, are also fine examples of Shan-style temples. Dating from 1867, Wat Jong Klang is perhaps the most interesting of the two because it houses a collection of wooden dolls and a display of panels painted with tales from Buddhist scriptures. By night, spotlights and shimmering reflections transform both temples into glowing silhouettes on the lake.

Precious Gems

The culture and traditions of the Shan come to the fore in early April during a spectacular festival called Poy Sang Long or Precious Gems. The colorful threeday event is held at temples in the town and in outlying villages to celebrate the ordination of young Shan boys into the monkhood. As many as 40 or 50 boys aged 7 to 14 years old take part in elaborate ceremonies and parades. For each family, it is an important merit-making ritual and a time of great pride. On the first day, close relatives gather in the temple courtyard to shave the heads of the young boys, allowing the hair to fall into a lotus leaf on the boy’s lap. This is the first important step in becoming a novice monk and symbolizes the renunciation of worldly goods and letting go of the ego.

The following day at 4 a.m., each boy gets made up with lipstick, eyeshadow, rouge, and thanaka, a yellow face powder made from the bark of a tree, then dressed like young princes in brightly colored clothes.

For the next three days, wherever they go, they are not allowed to touch the ground, carried on the shoulders of their father or uncle. Mornings start with prayer and religious instruction in the temple, followed by a feast. They are then paraded through the town on the shoulders of relatives and under the shade of golden umbrellas as sang long or precious gems. Back at the temple, boisterous dancing and celebration continue into the night. On the final day, the glittering costumes are exchanged for saffron robes, the boys’ eyebrows are shaved off, and they are welcomed into the monkhood, staying at the temple for two or three weeks before returning home to their families. For many, it becomes a defining memory of the transition into adulthood.

THE LAST DREAMERS STILL WANDER

AFrench colonial doctor’s wife, Marthe Bassene, described Luang Prabang in 1909 as a “delightful paradise,” untouched by the pressures and ambitions of her era. In her journal, she wondered whether it might be “refuge of the last dreamers, the last lovers, the last troubadours.”

More than a century later, it’s unclear whether she ever traveled farther upriver to Nong Khiaw or the even more remote Meuang Ngoi. But had she made the journey, she would have found landscapes that fit her romantic vision even more completely. These villages sit along the emerald waters of the Ou River, framed by soaring limestone karsts that rise abruptly from the valley like ancient guardians.

Life here still moves at a gentler rhythm. Visitors drift into the easy cadence of the river with lazy afternoons in woven hammocks, quiet walks along bamboo-lined footpaths, or swims in the cool, green current. As evening settles, the silhouettes of the mountains fade into violet, and the river mirrors the last light of day.

Visitors today feel that lingering sense of timelessness of places where the world feels untouched enough that dreamers and troubadours might still find their refuge.

Getting there:

Lao Airlines has frequent flights to Luang Prabang from throughout the region. Nong Khiaw is a 4-hour drive north of the city, and Meuang Ngoi is a 1.5-hour boat cruise beyond that.

我 和 老 挝

2012 年，我从阿里巴巴辞职，踏 上老挝这片神秘而原始的土地。那 时，我注意到许多中国游客来老挝， 可以选择的伴手礼很少。而这里原始 森林保存完好，蕴藏着丰富的野生草 药 — —这让我萌生了一个念头：能不 能把这些大自然的宝藏，变成真正改 善健康的产品？

带着这个想法，我走遍了老挝的 高原与丛林，几乎踏遍全国各个省 份，搜集石斛、灵芝、东革阿里、鸡血 藤、土茯苓等草药。我们与村民合作 采集，就近建立粗加工厂，把草药制 成饮片出售。

BBL 工厂外观图 我大学学习的是化学制药专业，最初对这些草药并没有太多期待。 但很快，消费者的反馈让我震惊：有人吃了诺丽果便秘改善了；有人服 用灵芝后血压稳定、睡眠变好；甚至有人说东革阿里缓解了痛风。原本 只是 土特产 的草药，逐渐显现出强大的健康价值。

BBL 创始人龙攀先生 2015 年起，我们成立了专业团队，用野生草药 研发保健品与成药。2017 年，老挝著名草药专家段 萨旺教授加入我们。我们一方面查阅大量国际文献， 另一方面深入调研老挝民间传统用药习惯，结合中 医临床经验，并与老挝卫生部传统草药研究所合作 开展临床研究，不断优化产品。

野生灵芝的故事 我们在老挝原始森林中找到了珍贵的野生灵 芝。最初只是采回来晒干出售，但很快遇到难题：仅 仅一个月，许多灵芝就被虫蛀空。我们尝试过蒸汽杀 虫，却损失有效成分；改用 90℃烘烤，虽然好一些， 但仍易生虫。因为坚持不用熏硫，损耗巨大，不少灵 芝只好用来泡酒。至今，我们还留有 100 多坛 2016 年泡制的灵芝酒。后来，我们逐渐摸索出更科学的保 存方法。

BBL 团队到原始森林寻找灵芝 随着产品推向市场，消费者反馈让我们 深受鼓舞：有人睡眠改善了，有人免疫力提 高了，感冒恢复得快了；还有长期服用的客 人，血压下降，用药量减少。事实上，灵芝对 三高 辅助调理和修复西药导致的肝损伤， 都有明显益处。

后来，不少化疗患者尝试服用灵芝胶 囊，反馈三四天后便不再恶心呕吐，睡眠改 善，检查甚至显示化疗效果更好。老挝一位 宫颈癌患者，因化疗导致血细胞数值长期 偏低，服用灵芝胶囊十天后，在泰国检测结 果显示红细胞和白细胞接近正常。查阅文 献后，我们确认灵芝确实有促进骨髓造血、 减轻放化疗副作用的功效。甚至还有客人反 馈，长期服用灵芝破壁粉后，甲状腺结节消 失了，这与灵芝的免疫平衡作用高度一致。

原始森林中正在生长的野生灵芝 2014 年昆明南博会，我们带回的一批灵 芝未售完，正好送给一位癌症晚期的湖北同 事婶婶。她本已放弃治疗，却在服用灵芝后 状态明显改善。虽然一年后因复发离世，但 她的村子很多人因此开始服用灵芝。还有一 位肺癌晚期患者，至今服用已近八年，仍保 持良好状态。

正是这些真实案例，让我们更加坚定要 把灵芝做好。一方面，不断改进剂型，让灵芝 更易吸收和坚持服用；另一方面，广泛收集 老挝各地赤芝、紫芝、桑黄等三十多种灵芝， 送至权威检测中心分析，筛选出有效成分含 量最高的品种。我们还发现，带虫眼的野生 灵芝往往品质更佳。为了确保品质，我们坚 持 就近采集、立即干燥、防止霉变 ，只选用 成熟健壮的灵芝，仓储采用低温真空保存。

北京大学林志彬教授主编的《灵芝的现代研 究》为我们提供了很多指导。总体来说，野生灵芝 子实体是国人千年来信赖的中草药，能有效调节 免疫，无论是免疫过激还是免疫不足，都有良好 作用，且长期服用副作用小。我们的灵芝产品推 出已十年，身边很多中老年亲友都在坚持服用。 这是老挝原始森林给予我们的珍贵馈赠。

东革阿里的故事

2012 年，我们和一位马来西亚朋友在老挝 森林中发现了野生东革阿里。最初，我们只是把 树根挖出来切片销售。按照传统，这种草药被认 为能壮阳，用来泡水饮用，但味道极苦，能坚持喝 的人并不多。

直到有一次，几个客人找到我们，说喝了三四天虽然没 有感受到壮阳的效果，却意外发现痛风症状缓解了。这让我 们意识到，东革阿里可能不仅仅是传统认知中的 壮阳草药 。

我们查阅大量国际研究文献，发现它确实兼具降尿酸和抗炎 活性，于是决定沿着这一方向深入研究

然而，很快我们也遭遇了挑战。两位客人反馈，长期饮用 东革阿里切片泡水后出现肚子疼，去医院检查发现肝脏转氨 酶升高了十几倍。这提醒我们：未经炮制的水提物长期服用 存在安全隐患。

为了破解这一问题，我们专门成立团队，改进炮制工艺 和剂型。在东革阿里基础上，配伍辅助草药，最终研发出更安 全的胶囊剂型。经过追踪检测，服用一段时间后，所有客人的 肝功能指标都保持正常，再没有出现类似情况。

东革阿里胶囊上市后，很快得到了 广泛认可。不仅痛风和高尿酸患者受益， 还有客人反馈：原本夜间要起床四五次 上厕所，坚持服用一周后，基本只需一 次；更令人惊讶的是，有客人前列腺钙化 点居然消失了。我们特地邀请部分客人 做对照检测，结果证实：在同一家医院、 同一台设备上，一个月后钙化点真的消 失了。

The meeting was chaired by Mr. S aleum Tayarath, Acting Managing Director, and brought

together representatives of Lao Airlines and its authorized ticket agents nationwide to review sales operations and strengthen cooperation for the year ahead.
