PRESIDENT'S LETTER
a reflection on a challenging year Each May, as I reflect on the school year, I am always filled with gratitude for the Chaminade Family. This year has taken my appreciation to a whole new level! The pandemic affected every single aspect of Chaminade. Yet, instead of being a victim to the restrictions, protocols, and uncertainties, we thrived! Never before have we lived the Marianist characteristic of adaptation and change more vividly. We were able to offer an in-person education to our students for the entire school year. We celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2021 and the transition to high school for our 8th graders. Every single varsity sports team was able to compete successfully, with many reaching post-season play. We prayed as a school community regularly with masses and prayer services. The House System coordinated house meetings and the well-loved Red Devil Relay to close out the House Cup competition. We learned that being together was worth the work. Ultimately, Chaminade was a LIVING example of Esto Vir! I am so proud of our students for their tenacity and willingness to follow the protocols necessary to keep us together in the building, learning and praying together. It's not fun to wear masks, to have to maintain distance from one another, or to complete health screenings daily, yet our students showed us that we could still laugh, learn, and succeed regardless of the circumstances. A special thank you to the Class of 2021. This year was likely not exactly what you expected of your senior year. Yet, your leadership was a large part of our success. As I said at graduation, I feel as though each of you exhibited the characteristics worthy of the coveted Esto Vir award; integrity, loyalty, generosity, leadership, and maturity. Your experience will serve you well as you continue your Esto Vir journey and become the men the world needs you to be. I am honored to work with a faculty and staff that was willing to get the job done, whatever it took. But they were not happy with just getting by, they went over and above to ensure that students had a quality education and experience whether they were on campus, learning from home down the street, or learning from another country. I even heard accounts of teachers getting online after hours to work with students living in a time zone 12 or more hours different than their own. My gratitude for our families is immense. I am grateful for your support in ensuring your sons were healthy when they came to school, your reinforcement at home of the mitigation strategies that kept all of us safe, your kindness with words of support (and some amazing treats), and most importantly, your prayers for a safe and successful year. None of what we accomplished this year would have been possible without you. We don't yet know what next year will look like, but, I for one, am not worried about how we will manage. We have proven that the Chaminade Family, when working together, can overcome even the most difficult circumstances and continue to thrive. ESTO VIR! Lastly, in January, I announced that I will be retiring at the close of the 2021-22 school year and that Dr. Todd Guidry, current middle school principal, was named as the next President of Chaminade College Preparatory School. I look forward to this next year of transition as Dr. Guidry and I work together to ensure continued growth for our school. I have every confidence that, with the support of our Chaminade Family, the best is yet to come!

CLASS OF 2021
It was a year like no other. How many times have we said that when referring to the 2020-21 school year? The pandemic certainly impacted everything and everyone. But the Gentlemen of the Class of 2021 persevered! They showed up every day, they supported each other every day, they were the leaders of the school every day. They chose to view the pandemic as a circumstance and not let it define them nor their experience.
On Sunday, May 16, we had the honor of celebrating this amazing class and their accomplishments. It was a blessing that we were able to celebrate in the Skip, our traditional location, with the full Class of 2021 together. They may have had masks on and attendance may have been limited but, once again, these Chaminade Gentlemen chose to look past these circumstances and make the most of this pivotal moment in their Esto Vir Journey.

PRINCIPAL'S LETTER
Formation in Faith: Fr. Chaminade and St. Joseph Last December, Pope Francis designated 2021 as a year dedicated to St. Joseph in honor of the 150th Anniversary of Pope Pius IX identifying St. Joseph as Patron of the Universal Church (Patris Corde). A designated year in the Church is chosen to emphasize a particular aspect of our faith or to inspire a particular devotion to assist the faithful on their spiritual journey (Pope Francis has previously called for a year dedicated to consecrated religious life and one dedicated to God's Mercy).
Chaminade since I was a student at the University of Dayton over thirty years ago. However, with the emphasis on this year dedicated to St. Joseph, I have discovered the deep and rich devotion Fr. Chaminade had to St. Joseph as well. Fr. Chaminade took St. Joseph as his Confirmation name and began signing his name as G. Joseph, relegating his given name to an initial. He mentioned Joseph regularly in his writings and composed a meditation on the Solemnity of the Feast of St. Joseph that people still find relevant. One of the unique traits of the Society of Mary is the concept of discipleship of equals, where priests, teaching brothers and working brothers share equally in the life of the community, a concept Fr. Chaminade developed out of his devotion to St. Joseph the worker.
St. Joseph has a unique role in the life of Jesus - as husband to his Mother Mary and as his foster Father - but he is presumed to have died before Jesus began his public ministry. What little we know of him comes from a handful of references in the Gospels, none of which include any of the words that he said. Yet those few passages paint a clear picture of his character and holiness.
In looking at St. Joseph, Fr. Chaminade sees the greatest saint who ever trod the earth: whatever virtue is to be found in any other saint is also to be found in abundance in St. Joseph. In Fr. Chaminade's words: Joseph was the savior of his Savior. Of all the prophets, martyrs and saints of the faith, it was only St. Joseph who protected and saved Jesus from those who sought him harm. Fr. Chaminade saw St. Joseph as the protector and guardian of Jesus and of Mary, and thus able to do the same for us.
The Gospels tell us that Joseph was a carpenter: a skilled craftsman, a worker. He was betrothed to Mary: a just man who was open and ready to carry out the Will of God as revealed to him in several dreams. As a result of these dreams, he marries Mary rather than divorcing her quietly and agrees to raise Jesus as his own son (Matt 1:19-20); he travels to Bethlehem but has to witness the birth of his son in a stable, for there was no room in the inn (Luke 2:7); he takes Mary and the newborn Jesus to the foreign country of Egypt to escape the wrath of Herod (Matt 2:13-14); and when he returns he relocates to Nazareth, again to avoid threats to his son (Matt 2:19-21).
As the foster Father of Jesus, St. Joseph was given the task of forming Jesus as he grew (Luke 2:51-52). Though Jesus was fully divine and thus unable to sin, his human nature was still in need of learning how to be virtuous in this world. St. Joseph (along with Mary) provided that example for him. Just as he did this for Jesus, he can do this for us. His example of faithfulness, commitment, generosity, self-sacrifice, industriousness, patience and love were not only for Jesus then, but also for us now. And not only example, but also intercession that we might receive the grace to be more virtuous and become more like his son.
Pope Francis identifies some of the specific qualities of St. Joseph. He is a beloved Father whose intercession has been sought by Christian people throughout the history of the Church. He is an obedient Father who followed the promptings of God despite the difficulties of traveling and relocating. He is an accepting Father embracing the mystery of God's plan for his life, doing so in a courageous and proactive manner. He is a working Father who taught his son the dignity and joy that come from one's own work. He is a Father in the shadows who finds happiness in being a gift to the Holy Family and playing his unique role in salvation history.
St. Joseph has been declared the Patron Saint of Workers and Patron of the Catholic Church and is frequently invoked as the patron of a happy death, because it is believed that he left his earthly life with both Mary and Jesus by his side. His intercession is powerful and we are reminded during this holy year that we have recourse to that intercession.
Fr. Chaminade's devotion to Mary is well-known: his prayerful vision at Our Lady of the Pillar, his naming of the religious order he founded as the Society of Mary, his prayers calling upon Mary's intercession, even his Doxology which honors God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit through the mission of Mary. Personally, I have been familiar with this aspect of Fr.

In the words of Fr. Chaminade: O faithful guardian of the Mother of God, keep those who honor you amid the trials and joys of this life. Lovable tutor of Jesus, help your servants in the dangers and difficulties of their exile; may they feel the effects of your love. Obtain for them devotion to your spouse, fidelity to your Son, unfailing respect for the Eternal Father who reigns with the Holy Spirit through endless ages. Amen. St. Joseph, pray for us. Mrs. Jessica Young Receives Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award! Congratulations to Mrs. Jessica Young on receiving the Emerson Excellence in Education Award! Mrs. Young is a Project Lead The Way engineering teacher for eighth- through 12th-graders at Chaminade College Preparatory School where her classroom overflows with spirit, challenge and support. Brett Desnoyer, associate principal for instruction and mission, said Young encourages her students to tinker, to experiment, even to make mistakes. She creates a true learning environment where students learn from trial and error, from feedback, from having fun. “Mrs. Young is among the most innovative teachers I have ever seen,” Desnoyer said. “She is a brilliant teacher, a true reflective practitioner, a tireless inventor of lessons and learning challenges. Mrs. Young gives her students what great teachers give — a classroom filled with joy, with support, and with kindness and affirmation.”

convention! The students spent 8+ hours on Zoom on both a Thursday and Friday, and 4+ hours on Saturday, either presenting bills in the legislative track, or acting as judges and trial attorneys in the judicial track. Despite the format challenges of Zoom, this was our most successful year to date. Only 4% of Scouts earn this rank. Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges. The Eagle Scout must demonstrate an ideal attitude based upon the Scout Oath and Law, service, and leadership. This includes an extensive service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages. Aidan's Eagle Scout Project was to build a GaGa Ball Pit at the grade school where he attended K-8, St. Stephen Protomartyr. Photos of his build and his assistant (his Dad) above!

Johnson '21 Named National Merit Finalist Congratulations to Chaminade Senior Kyle Johnson for being name a National Merit Finalist! Kyle scored in the top 1% on the PSAT nationally.
Mock Trial Advances to State! The Mock Trial Team known as “The Legislative Branch Managers” advanced to the state competition on April 9-11, 2021. For those of you who may not know, Mock Trial is a competition where students receive a detailed case packet for either a criminal or civil case, and they become the identities of both the attorneys and witnesses for the case. This year, all of the competitions were held virtually to ensure Covid-19 safety. In “The Legislative Branch Managers” first competition on January 26th, they faced Cor Jesu, and they won two out of three ballots. On February 18, they competed against John Burroughs, and they, again, won two out of three ballots. In order to win the competition, it is a combination of winning ballots and performance. This team proved formidable in both respects, and they ended their preliminary season in the Top 16 teams in the entire state of Missouri.
Chaminade Supports Birthright Chaminade participated in the 50/50/50 Challenge with Birthright this year. We met our goal through the generosity of our students families and were recognized by Birthright for our support.

Schroyer '23 Work Selected for Exhibit Congratulations to Holden Schroyer '23, whose ceramic vase was juried into the SIUE High School Art Exhibit. This show had over 200 entries and his was one of the few ceramic pieces selected. The warmth and simplicity of this piece speaks of his own humility as a person.
Cunneen '24 Competes in 2021 Jr. Open Water National Championship Chaminade freshman Trey Cunneen placed 9th in the 2021 Jr. Open Water 5K National Championships held April 17th in Ft. Myers, FL. In a fun twist, the Official who placed his timing/GPS wristbands discovered he and Trey shared a St. Louis Marianist connection - the Official was a Vianney alum and Trey a Chaminade student.
Class of 2027 Supports Our Little Haven A big thank you to our 6th Graders! They learned about the agency, Our Little Haven (Scott Hummel '81, CEO) and decided they wanted to donate their “alms” to this worthy cause. They raised more than $3000!

These recordings were judged along with other schools throughout the country who chose to submit recordings during the month of April.
Isaac led a project to install a GaGa Ball Pit at Whole Kids Outreach in Ellington, Missouri. Whole Kids Outreach is a faithbased, nonprofit service organization committed to the unmet health and developmental needs of children, youth, and pregnant women with their family structure. They serve the poorest counties in rural Missouri. Ryan made a storage area for athletes to store their belongings for the Disabled Athletes Sports Association (DASA). Ryan is an amputee and has been a part of the organization for over 9 years. DASA empowers people with physical disabilities to reach their goals for rehabilitation or athletic purposes.

Basketball Places 3rd at State In what was a challenging year, the Varsity Basketball Team made yet another final four appearance. After falling to a tough (and later named State Champion) Kickapoo team, they easily defeated Fort Zumwalt North for the 3rd place title. The Society of Mary recognizes that, as 1 Corinthians 12 teaches, the Body of Christ must value each of its parts equally because of what each uniquely contributes, so must the Marianist Family equally value everyone's gifts because we are Christ's body in the world.
Since the beginnings of the Judeo-Christian tradition, people of faith have sought to understand the diverse and equal nature of God's finest creation, humanity. The authors of Genesis, inspired by the Holy Spirit, included in the first story in the Sacred Scriptures the truth that God created all people in the divine image. Continuing through the recent November 2020 publication of Pope Francis' third encyclical letter Fratelli Tutti: On Fraternity and Social Friendship, Pope Francis reaffirmed “God … has created all human beings equal in rights, duties and dignity, and … has called them to live together as brothers and sisters, to fill the earth and make known the values of goodness, love, and peace”. Today, Chaminade College Prep persists in proclaiming the Catholic, Marianist ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusion that the Marianist Family has always embraced.
Chaminade College Prep continues educating our students in this Catholic, Marianist charism today as we continue to cherish diversity, equity, and inclusion. Our five houses are named after five people who represent the diversity of the Marianist Family. Bro. Vincent Gray was a teaching brother and the first AfricanAmerican brother in the United States. Venerable Marie-Therese de Lamourous was a lay woman recognized as a co-founder of the Marianist Family (alongside Blessed Chaminade and Blessed Adele) for her work in establishing the sodality movement. Fr. Francis Mauclerc and Fr. Leo Meyer, both born in Europe, were two of the first Marianist priests to serve in the United States. Finally, Bro. John O'Donnell was a working brother who spent nearly forty years of his life serving on our campus before his death in 1973. Together, these five people exemplify the diversity that Blessed Chaminade so valued.
MARIANIST HISTORY OF INCLUSION Blessed William Joseph Chaminade was unique among founders of Catholic religious orders in that the 'sodality' faith sharing groups that he founded in 1801 were populated primarily by lay people. Then, in 1816, he and Blessed Adele de Batz de Trenquelleon founded the Daughters of Mary Immaculate for Marianist nuns, and, only after those two branches were already established, Blessed Chaminade formed the Society of Mary for Marianist religious brothers and priests in 1817. This unusual example of the equal positioning of lay people, and female and male consecrated religious demonstrated that over two hundred years ago the Marianist Family valued inclusivity—in fact, inclusivity is among the five pillars of the Marianist charism. The sodality groups welcomed people from all social classes and all types of work to participate equally. In Our Marianist Heritage, Fr. Joseph Stefanelli, SM, wrote that Blessed Chaminade said “very clearly about the sodality [that] it was to embrace all classes of people, both genders, and all conditions; the sodality was to represent within itself the fullness of diversity of the Church.” Because all people were called to Jesus, the new Marianist Family needed to include people of all social classes so that all could be reached and welcomed as the Family grew in their mission to bring Christ to the world. Then, once the Society of Mary was established for the brothers and priests, Blessed Chaminade insisted that the constitution of the society include people of diverse talents and vocations and that all members be treated with equal standing. In the Marianist Family today, we call this the “discipleship of equals” in that the Society of Mary does not value clerics more than non-ordained brothers. Instead, there are three categories of members of

CHAMINADE'S WORK TO DATE Our school opened in 1910 as a strictly residential school, primarily for domestic, rural students. However, Chaminade has always welcomed people of all nationalities, particularly in the early 1900's when many American citizens related more to the cultures of the countries from which their families emmigrated. 2021 actually marks the centennial anniversary of the graduation of our first international resident student, Angel F. Arechederra from Tehuacan, Mexico, who graduated in 1921. Since his enrollment, we have had a steady stream of students from Central and South America, thanks in part to our Catholic identity. Our school's Asian population grew dramatically in the 1980's when we began attracting international resident students from Thailand and Korea, with our Chinese population growing in the early 2000's. In 1996 the Society of Mary published the Characteristics of Marianist Education, which has become the primary philosophical guiding document for all Marianist schools. One of those characteristics is “to educate for service, justice, peace, and the integrity of creation”. Just two years after the publication of the CME's, Chaminade created our Office of Diversity and hired Mr. Dietrich Smith to serve as our Diversity Director. Mr. Smith has visited hundreds of classrooms over the years, and his lessons about diversity have become an invaluable component of our curriculum and our students' Esto Vir Journeys. The Office of Diversity also has helped us to welcome an even more ethnically diverse population to the Chaminade Family, maintaining Blessed Chaminade's appreciation of diversity. Other departments at Chaminade have made a concerted effort to educate about and celebrate our diversity. Through Global
REACH, our sophomores for a decade have been taking our Road to Freedom experiential education trip to learn the history of the underground railroad and the United States' Civil Rights Movement. Our band program has hosted the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Jazz Festival every year since we opened the Skip, welcoming jazz professionals who have taught about both classic forms of jazz and Dr. King's vision, while also inviting students from a diverse group of schools to join the festival. Our house system and campus ministry routinely celebrate the many cultures on our campus, creating programming around such international events as the Lunar New Year, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and Mexican Independence Day. Our Social Studies Department has created an elective course called “Pluralism in American History” that pays particular attention to the contributions to our nation's democracy, culture and economic development from minority groups such as African-Americans, indigenous peoples, immigrants, the socioeconomically disadvantaged, women, Catholics and other minority groups. In 2020, the Alumni Board unanimously named Dr. Stephanie Kralemann as Chaminade's first female honorary alumnus. The inclusion of our international students in our athletic programs is at an all-time high, which highlights our continued commitment to the Characteristics of Marianist Education of an integral, quality education and education in family spirit. Chaminade has also improved our facilities dramatically to ensure that all people can participate in the totality of our offerings. Accessibility is at an all-time high with improvements having been made to our elevators, our building access, and our access to the athletic fields. Chaminade also celebrates diversity by recognizing our students' diverse learning needs and implementing differentiated instruction. We continue to advocate for and to implement methods of instruction which promote strategies which are student-centered, active, and permit students to explain their reasoning, demonstrate their thought process, and discover how they learn best. Whether our instruction is differentiated (offering students greater choice and autonomy in learning) or performance based (providing students opportunity to show their work, demonstrate their ideas, and to solve genuine problems) our instructional vision centers on recognizing and developing each student's God given talents and gifts. These methods of instruction allow every student to develop a sense of their inherent worth and dignity and an understanding of their value to the Chaminade community and to the world.
Catholic, Marianist mission to celebrate the diversity of the Body of Christ such that we can evangelize all young men, as we always have. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and Pope Francis have charged us to continue our work in their pastoral letter “Open Wide our Hearts” and in his papal encyclical Fratelli Tutti respectively. To meet this call, we have formed seven committees, each addressing the themes of this letter and this encyclical. Our Images and Icons Committee is looking into how the art on our campus reflects the diversity of the Chaminade Community, the Marianist Family, and the Catholic Church. Our Marianist Formation Committee will promote dialogue among our faculty and staff on methods of instruction designed to provide the best learning experience for all students and to deepen our atmosphere of family spirit. Curriculum Review will continue to examine our curriculum in an effort to acknowledge the experiences of all people and their contributions to the development of human knowledge while maintaining the integrity of the tradition of scholarship of the academic disciplines. Student Enrollment and Retention will focus on retaining and increasing enrollment of students of color and addressing obstacles to their full participation in the Chaminade experience. Talent and Recruitment will focus on strategies to recruit the best possible employees to express and fulfill our curriculum and mission. Community Outreach will build opportunities for the Chaminade Family to work with underserved communities in St. Louis. And finally, Student Engagement will build upon and develop the programs that celebrate diversity in our school, our Church, and our world. We do this DEI work so that we can celebrate all of our students, educating them to use their God-given talents to build the Kingdom of God. This DEI initiative will be a slowly evolving one because it is important to our school's future and our students' development that we get it right.

ULTIMATE FRISBEE Pictured Above, Right The Ultimate team has opened its 14th season with another promising group of young players, including Robert Thompson, a transfer student from California, as well as 8th grader Chase Kendall, younger brother of team captain, Peyton Kendall '21. Also leading the team are co-captains, Stephen Wheadon '21 and Ashton Kautzner '22. The team looks to reestablish its dominance in the league from two years ago, rather than simply rebuild. One move has been adding Ben Reimler, a 2019 graduate, to the coaching staff. FOOTBALL Pictured Above, Middle Due to its position as the earliest practicing sport, our football program was put in the position of pioneering many of our Covid protocols this season. More uncertainty was added to the team that already had a lot of questions to answer after graduating a strong senior class that led the 2020 Red Devils to the State Quarterfinals. Additionally, the team was kept from competing due to County Guidelines until early October, but the strength the football team found through overcoming adversity led them to a 2-1 regular season record with wins over Trinity and Vianney before capturing their second consecutive District Championship and a trip back to the State Quarterfinals. The Red Devils ultimately ran into a juggernaut, falling to the eventual undefeated State Champions from Jackson, finishing with a 6-2 record when some thought they wouldn't play at all. All-State Honors were earned by RB Amar Johnson (1st Team), DB Cam Epps (1st Team), DE Grant Finley (2nd Team), and OL Jimmy Lansing Jr. (2nd Team). The Red Devils look to return almost all contributing players next year as they attempt to finally attain their goal of a State Championship. WATER POLO The successful campaign of this season's Water Polo team is the result of the hard work and dedication of six Seniors: Kyle Korando, James Lynn, Jake Feise, Owen Boyette, Shane Bolle, and Alex Miller. Contributing to this success were also Junior, Matthew Murawski, Sophomore, Holden Schroyer, and Freshmen, Jake Wedding. This season had many highlights. Jake Wedding led the team with over 65 goals and was also named a Post-Dispatch Athlete of the Week on May 6th. James Lynn was a rock in goal earning 9 wins and leading the conference in multiple statistical categories.

The team finished with a 9-5 record and in first place in the White Conference. A respectable seven seed was earned for the playoffs and a 9-5 sectional victory over Parkway South advanced the team into the state quarterfinals against Kirkwood. BASKETBALL Pictured Above, Left In a season impacted by COVID-19, the Chaminade basketball team experienced success. For this academic school year, student-athletes were required to play with masks, seats on the bench were staggered and crowds were drastically limited all to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Despite these factors, the Chaminade basketball team finished with a record of 22-2, were crowned MCC Champions and captured third place in the state tournament. This is the sixth time in seven years Chaminade finished made it to the final four. VOLLEYBALL Without a spring 2020 volleyball season, the program's 2021 season was a one of rebuilding. With 31 players, we were able to carry three teams for the first time in our program's history. The 2019 State Championship placed the varsity team in a higher class, which raised the level of competition. Senior captains Nick Bagatti '21 and RJ Jackson '21 worked to instill a culture of hard work and success in the practice gym and in game. Junior captain Jake Sudduth '22 was named first team all-district, and both Jake and Nick received recognitions on the All MCC teams. The JV and Freshmen teams were quite successful, and they competed well against many of the best teams in the area. The middle school program, created and run by Coach Laura Griese, had its first class join the high school program this year. The varsity team showed great strides in the late season, and the underclassmen were very impressive. The future of Chaminade Volleyball is bright! SWIMMING AND DIVING Covid placed several challenges on the team this year including many early morning practices to ensure social distancing. The team finished the season with a 4-6 dual meet record and a 16th place finish at the Class 1 State Meet in November. Top finishers at state included Joseph Donlin '21 who placed third in 1m Diving and freshman Matthew Judkins who finished 8th
in 100 Butterfly and 14th in 100 backstroke. Donlin was awarded the “Great at State” award for his diving performance. Donlin will dive at the University of Indianapolis next year. Other top contributors on the state team included Matthew Noonan '21, Jake Feise '21, Anthony Etzel '21, and Ethan Figert '22. GOLF Pictured Above, Left STATE CHAMPIONS! TRACK & FIELD The 2021 Track & Field team is one of the best overall squads in recent memory with gold medal caliber athletes in nearly every event. The middle distance and distance crew was a great combination of youth (9th graders Alex Cattoor and Mitch Hardemann and 10th grader Ryan Wolak, among others) and experience (seniors Casey Cavlovich, Kenneth Hammell and Conrad Hogenkamp) that carried them far into the playoff series of meets. The talent on the team extended into the field events as well with standouts in the long jump (Jonathan Lee), triple jump (Charlie O'Bryan) and high jump (Charlie O'Bryan, Jason Rea). David Kruse and Hank Proost earned points in the pole vault while Kyle Riffel and Sean Cavanaugh medaled in nearly every meet in the javelin. Not to be outdone, our throwers in the shot and discus consistently earned top honors including Simon Peistrup, Alex Todt, Zach Feise, Kyle Russell and Brady Noonan. WRESTLING After having a long run of five straight years with at least one State Medalist or State Champion, the Chaminade Wrestling team entered a season of growth and rebuilding. Due to the difficulties of Covid, our wrestlers were forced to compete in an already grueling sport with masks on, even when some of our opponents were unmasked, which led to some difficult matches this season. Luckily, with the resilience of a lot of new and talented wrestlers, the team finished with 7 sectional qualifiers: Aeden Stewart, Dan Smith, Jack Lake, Terrell Saddler, Joe Corrigan, Max Mattina, and Jake Ortiz.
Most of these wrestlers finished just one win shy of qualifying for state, but with only two seniors graduating, the future of the Red Devil Wrestlers is extremely bright. CROSS COUNTRY Pictured Above, Right This past fall, the Chaminade Cross Country program enjoyed its best season in two decades. An outstanding Varsity team, led by senior Conrad Hogenkamp and junior Henry Hardeman, won districts and finished fourth in the Class 4 State Championship Meet. At the State Meet, Hogenkamp placed third overall and Hardeman placed tenth, marking the first time in team history that two runners finished in the top ten. More than just a strong Varsity team, over fifty students ran Cross Country with a promising group of freshmen ready to extend the program's success. BASEBALL First of all, it was great to be back on the field after missing the entire season in 2020. We finished the season 15-13 winning 9 of last 12 games but unfortunately hitting a bump in the road in district play losing in extra innings 3-2. The strength of the year was our pitching with an overall team ERA of 2.73 striking out 143 batters. Senior Jack Weber (Saint Louis University signee) was the anchor of the staff along with his brother Junior Charlie Weber. Key contributors were Senior Will Higgins, Senior Sam Chiburis, Sophomore Chris Pelligreen (until an injury derailed his season), and Freshman Dalton Hosack. The team has a bright future with super sophomores Aiden Houseworth (shortstop), Will Bacich (3B/1B), catchers Charlie Burt and Aiden Koutroubis, Aaron Carey (P/OF), and freshman Carter Mercer (OF/3B/P) making vital contributions all year. We look forward to more success in the 2022 season and will miss the leadership of Jack Weber and all the other seniors. VARSITY SOCCER The varsity soccer team had another successful season capturing a district and sectional championship before losing to the eventual state champion in the quarterfinals. While the team had many veteran players with a great deal of varsity experience, we were able to gain quality game experience with some underclassmen. Senior Sean Green was selected as an All-American and will be representing Chaminade in the AllAmerican game. Special congrats are extended to Sean and all of our seniors as they begin the next chapter of their lives, we thank them for the commitment to the program.

ALUMNI NOTES
As we conclude another school year, there is much of which to be proud. As you may know, Chaminade was open for in-person learning since the first day of school on August 18 and our school was a great model of "what went right" during Covid. It almost seemed as though our alumni fed off the energy from the students, faculty, and staff to host some remarkably successful events. Despite the challenges related to Covid, the Alumni Golf Classic was very well received and attended. With 120 golfers, great weather, and even greater comradery, we could not have asked for a better day. Additionally, we hosted our first-ever Virtual Trivia Night. The event drew 110 registered guests and it was a great evening using the Zoom and Crowdpurr platforms. The event would not have been possible if not for Jack Benage and Brandon Carter, both of the Class of 2008. I sincerely thank them for their leadership, as well as their MC and IT skills, that made the event possible. We already have people asking for the date for next year's event, which is Saturday, March 5, 2022. As you know, the Chaminade Alumni Awards are very special and prestigious within the Chaminade family. Fritz Clifford '75 and Patrick Hyde '04 have been named as the 2021 Alumnus of the Year and Humanitarian Alumnus, respectively. These awards are typically presented and celebrated at Blessed Chaminade Day in January, but have been postponed until the First Friday Mass on October 1, which will serve as our official kickoff to Celebrate Chaminade Weekend. We are optimistic that Chaminade will be able, once again, to allow inperson gatherings and have family/friends in attendance and we look forward to celebrating with everyone in October. Scored 25+ points in 17 consecutive games to begin the season, which eclipsed Michael Jordan for the longest such streak since the NBA/ABA merger. Bradley also became the second Wizard ever to score 12,000 points, joining Elvin Hayes.

Jakobi Buchanan '18 capped an 80-yard drive with his sixth touchdown of the season with less than a minute and a half to play Saturday to put Army ahead of the Air Force and captured the 2020 Commander-In-Chief's trophy. Jakobi was also a finalist for the 2020 Lowman Trophy Award, which annually recognizes the outstanding fullback in college football.

Justin Cook '17 recently graduated from NYU with a degree in film and television and will pursue his dream to write, direct and film projects in multiple areas of interest. Justin also continues to pursue his musical interests with former Chaminade student, Jack Deubner. They just released their second album on GarageBand.

Ben Jackson '17 was honored with the Men's Division II Yeardley Reynolds Love Unsung Hero Award. 2021 ESTO VIR AUCTION Chaminade's 47th Annual, but first ever virtual, Esto Vir Auction was a great success. For the second year in a row, we broke school records raising over $525,000. Our dedicated donors, sponsors, students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends are what make our community so special. A 100-YEAR-OLD DEBT PAID Past President Father Alfred H. Rabe, whose term spanned from 1921-1927, can be credited with making a very beneficial financial decision for Chaminade. In August 1922, Mr. and Mrs. T.C. Pinkley notified Fr. Rabe that they were unable to send their second son, Faherty, back to Chaminade in the fall due to the cost. Fr. Rabe responded with this financial arrangement: “I have consulted with the members of the Board at Chaminade, and they all feel in this matter the way I do, that we can afford to do something ourselves to help you along in his case. I propose to take Faherty for this year at least without worrying you about his Board and Tuition. We can let it to you or to the boys to do something for us later on, after once they are earning a living. If you will permit us to make this offer to you, and if you accept, we would ask you to pay only for the extras – Music, Stationery, etc., and we would forget about the $350 and trust Faherty to pay it off in later years, with no time limit at all.”

All three of the Pinkley boys (James Carroll Pinkley '23, Leonard Faherty Pinkley '24 and Talbert “T.C.” Pinkley '29) continued their attendance and graduated from Chaminade. It was the oldest of the Pinkley boys who repayed the tuition assistance debt that the family had incurred almost 100 years ago! Faherty's children, Dr. Len Pinkley and Deedee McGhee (Len's sister), visited Chaminade in April to present us with a check for $339,000 from their uncle's trust. Fittingly, the Pinkley family is establishing an endowed scholarship with the gift. “Pivot! Pivot!” For the Admissions Office, it has been a year of pivoting and learning to 'smile with our eyes'. Our traditional methods of attracting families to Chaminade through shadow visits, on campus events and in person tours had to shift – pushing us to find new and creative ways to showcase Chaminade to prospective families.

The fall started with much uncertainty as we questioned whether visiting families would be authorized to physically set foot on campus. Utilizing our student ambassadors and teachers, we instead offered virtual chat sessions. These allowed for more casual conversation combined with a question and answer format. Archdiocese High School Nights were also converted to a virtual format and our ambassadors did a stellar job presenting Chaminade in an authentic way to prospective students through a screen. With Zoom fatigue setting in, we designed a plan (with safety protocols in place) to host individual family tours after school and on select Saturdays with our student ambassadors assisting. As the fall progressed, we received feedback that, while prospective families enjoyed the personal tours in the off hours, they wanted to see our students and classrooms 'in action'. With approval from the Medical Task Force, we were able to provide individual campus tours during the school day, host Open House and eventually host prospective students in class for a hybrid type of “shadow visit” opportunity for newly accepted students. Although our annual Open House required changes in planning, including limiting the event to 80 families, the overall feedback from visitors was extremely positive and we were happy to discover many new strategies to implement for future years. While it took much effort to follow protocols and gain approval for these things, our efforts in getting visitors to campus safely during this time proved fruitful. We are happy to report that our biggest and most important entry point, 6th grade, is trending to top 80 students by August, a level not seen since the '08-'09 school year. There are also discussions of putting in place a “wait pool” status for the class of 2026, the rising 8th grade, so as not to jeopardize our small, tight-knit community. Knowing the importance of keeping the 'family spirit' of Chaminade alive and well, we are conscious of class sizes growing too large. On another note, we would like to share a fun fact about the incoming 6th grade and their legacy ties to Chaminade. Over 60% of the incoming 6th graders have a connection to Chaminade with either a brother currently attending, or other legacy roots of a father, brother, cousin, and/or grandpa as an alumnus. Welcome to the family, gentlemen!
