Theology
Mr. Slattery
rslattery@chaminade-stl.org February is "Matthew Month" in theology class. We'll be reading through the Gospel of Matthew with a particular focus on the parables of Jesus. We'll be illustrating parables and reading through each one found in Matthews Gospel, among other activities.
Social Studies
Mr. Chiburis
cchiburis@chaminade-stl.org We are continuing to learn about Europe. We completed the section on Southern Europe and are now into Central Europe. Please continue to gather information on your family history that is due in April.
English
Mr. Hanock
jhanock@chaminade-stl.org In English we are wrapping up our novella, “The Body.” We have taken literary notes on the story and worked on outlining character details. Throughout this story we have looked at clues and figurative language techniques that the author used to help the reader make predictions for the story. Book Report #3 is due on February 19th. Please check in and see how your son is doing and make sure they are reading or listening to their book every night or so. Lastly, we will be getting into some short stories in the near future, developing a number of short-paragraph essays, and will be starting another novel, “Prisoner B-3087.”
Math
Mrs. Perlow
dperlow@chaminade-stl.org This semester we are going to focus a little more on format and organization. The students are asked to do their problem sets using a certain format and everyone is to keep a binder. We just finished our first chapter for the semester. We are now studying how to solve equations or systems of equations.
Science

tpendleton@chaminade-stl.org We just finished learning about the respiratory system and are now moving on to learning about exercise. I hope to have the boys making a video about exercise before we move on to the digestive system.
Band
Mr. Jones
hjones@chaminade-stl.org This month the Middle School Bands have been working on music from Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean. We’re also working our way through the Essential Elements for Band books; the beginners are on p.12 of Book 1 and the Intermediate Band is on page 5 of Book 2. All band students will participate in our annual Solo and Ensemble Invitational which will take place Wednesday March 31st from 3-5pm. Everyone performs with a small ensemble at the festival; students may also choose to perform a solo for 50 extra credit points. Students who want the optional solo should see Mr. Jones for music.

Chinese

wchien@chaminade-stl.org The January has been reviews, especially focused on how to express date in Chinese. All vocabulary from 1st semester are essential, please make sure that students know how to write them by memorization. If not, I would suggest students start to make flash cards. From now to February is about Herbert. Who is Herbert? What does he want for his birthday? Why are his friends all mad at him? Why can he not get what he wanted? Who is the one who fulfills his birthday wish? Latin
Mr. Makarewicz
jmakarewicz@chaminade-stl.org Students are now finishing chapter 6 in the textbook. Students should be reminded that when they have a quiz over a reading (lectio), they are expected to know the vocabulary and content of the reading. On Canvas there are videos and quizlet flash cards that can help. We are beginning to prepare for the National Latin Exam which students will take in mid-March. Any students interested in doing well on this enrichment test can find online practice at www.nle.org. If students want to re-take quizzes or need any extra help, it is best to come early on Block 3 days. In February, block 8 days are on Thursday 2/4 and Thursday 2/18. I am also available by appointment.
Art
Mr. Anthony
manthony@chaminade-stl.org 7th grade art students have been working diligently on a project inspired by the artist Jacob Lawrence. Jacob saw struggle as universal; something beautiful and necessary for our growth as human beings. Students have taken a liking to his abstract style and are finishing their own explorations inspired by his prolific work. They are cutting out colored paper into shapes that mimic paint. We will be critiquing and reflecting on their completed work next week. Keep up the good work gentlemen!
Theater

slawrence@chaminade-stl.org We are ending our unit on Comedy and Clowning by sharing our Sketch Comedy Film projects with the class. After this, students will read the play "Holes" by Louis Sachar. We will also begin our unit on scenic construction, culminating with a set design project using Minecraft: Education Edition. Audition information for the Middle School play will be sent out mid-late February, stay tuned!
