NEW 7TH AND 8TH GRADE PARENT AND STUDENT ORIENTATION
Student Orientation, New 7th and 8th grade students
Monday, August 11, 8:30 a.m.-12:35 p.m.
Students must come dressed in full uniform, ready for their first day as a Chaminade student. Students will be introduced to technology programs, meet classmates and teachers, and learn general information that will help make their transition easier. They will also receive their tablets and locker assignments on this day. After school, parents may get into student lockers to set them up with their child.

LOCKER SET-UP FOR NEW STUDENTS
New 7th and 8th grade students will receive locker assignments and can set-up their lockers after orientation on Monday, August 11 from 12:30pm-6:00pm. Sixth graders will receive locker assignments and combinations during orientation. Students may set up lockers on Tuesday, August 12 after their orientation from 12:30pm- 6:00pm
NEW FAMILY VIRTUAL INFORMATION NIGHT
Wednesday, August 20, 6:00 p.m.-7:15 p.m.
We know the beginning of the school year is both exciting and can be challenging. Please join us for our Virtual New Family Information Night, to help ease your transition and make it as seamless as possible.
At this event, you will learn how to support your child in how to:
• Upload and track Apostolic Works hours
• Access school information and navigate Schoology, our learning management system
• Utilize the counseling service and get tips and strategies to help with a smooth middle school transition
• Navigate the athletic program regarding tryout processes, online registration for sports, and program philosophy
• Get involved in student activities such as clubs, performing arts, and the House System

Textbooks
Chaminade uses MBS Direct as the official online bookstore for purchasing all course textbooks. The MBS Online Bookstore will open on July 15th. Returning families should log in as an existing customer. New families can find information for creating an MBS Direct at this link. We are moving forward with a book fee style textbook purchasing. On MBS you will be charged a one-time fee for each of your student(s). This book fee will cover all the required digital licenses and hardcopy textbooks for the 2025-2026 school year. This will not cover any optional textbooks that you or your child(ren) might want. Class Schedules
An email from Chaminade News will notify you when student schedules are available on the Family Portal by mid-July. Directions for accessing the schedule will be sent at this time as well. Please be advised that schedules cannot be changed to accommodate individual preferences. Changes to schedules will only be made in the case of an error or to balance class sizes. If you have difficulty accessing the Family Portal please contact the front office at (818) 363-8127.
Summer Reading & Supply Lists
In addition to textbooks, students will need school supplies and summer reading books. All students are REQUIRED to read during the summer and upon returning in August, participate in learning activities that correspond to the summer reading. You may purchase summer reading books at your local independent bookstore, bookshop.org, Amazon, or for 6th grade, at MBS Direct Online Bookstore. Immunizations Records
The State of California requires all schools to confirm student immunizations records to meet minimum State requirements for school attendance. As such, Parents must provide their student’s Immunization Record as proof of required immunizations upon a student’s initial enrollment at Chaminade and for any student advancing to the 7th grade. If your student is new to Chaminade or advancing into 7th grade, please login to Finalsite HERE and upload a copy of their current immunization record into the enrollment checklist.

BUS REGISTRATION
Registration for the bus ended on June 1st. There are still spots available on some buses. If interested, please email Ryan Smith at transportation@chaminade.org. For those families who have already registered for the bus, please expect detailed information on your route to be sent in early August.
HEALTHY HABITS FOR LIFE: A YEARLONG CAREGIVER SERIES
This fall, we invite parents and caregivers to join us for a new yearlong workshop series: Healthy Habits for Life: Forming Resilient, Balanced, and Joyful Students.
Building on last year’s series on executive functioning, this series will explore how to cultivate sustainable success through routines that build resilience, independence, and healthy and ethical use of technology and media. Anchored in themes from Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation, we’ll reflect together on how shifts in technology, media, and social connection are impacting middle schoolers—and how we can partner to raise grounded, adaptable, and hopeful young people.
Each gathering will offer opportunities to learn and talk with other caregivers, educators, and counselors about research-based insights and practical strategies for home. We hope you’ll join us as we support students in forming healthy habits that will prepare them for lives of purpose and joy. Our first gathering will be in September right after drop-off in our school library. More details to come in August in our Chaminade This Week (CTW) weekly newsletter! STAR TESTING
Schools in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles (ADLA) administer STAR Assessments in reading and math during three test windows throughout the year. The school uses STAR data, along with other academic data, to make curricular and instructional decisions that support student learning. STAR math scores, along with other criteria, are used to determine math placement the following year. As with any test, many factors can affect a student’s scores. Therefore, it is important to remind students to do their best. By the end of each semester, STAR scores are posted on student transcripts, which parents can access in the Parent Portal on Blackbaud. For detailed score reports, contact your child’s counselor. Math and English teachers will post on Schoology when they are administering STAR in their class during the following windows: Window 1: Aug. 26Sept. 15; Window 2: Jan. 12-Feb. 2; Window 3: April 17-May 8
SUMMER MATH IN ALEKS
The ALEKS pie will be available to all current Chaminade students this summer. Rising 6th and 7th graders will have a new summer pie to work on, while 8th graders will work on their existing pie. Research shows that practicing math over the summer will help students’ math performance in the next school year.
CHAMINADE THIS WEEK (CTW)
Our weekly newsletter, CTW (Chaminade This Week), will be emailed to the primary contact address provided at the time of enrollment. Students will also receive a copy of the CTW to their chaminet.org email address every Friday at 3:00pm.
In the CTW, students and families can read Mr. Halverson’s weekly message, view schedule updates and obtain information regarding administrative announcements, academics, counseling, athletics, campus ministry, cafeteria, student engagement, and volunteering by viewing the landing page. SEMESTER EXAMS
At the end of each semester, students will complete two exams each day for their core classes. The schedule on exam days is 8:30am11:15am.
First semester exams- Dec, 15, 16, and 17 (All grades)

Second semester exams– May 26, 27, 28 (Grades 6-7)

ABSENTEEISM
It is the parent’s obligation to inform the Health/Attendance office of an absence between 7:45am and 9:00am each day the student is absent. This is mandatory. (Emailing a teacher is NOT considered notifying the Health/ Attendance office). Students who have been absent from school must have a note from a parent upon their return. Student’s absences due to illness lasting 5 or more consecutive days will need a doctor’s note of clearance to be admitted back to school.
TARDIES
All students arriving late to school must check into Health/Attendance office with their school ID to sign in and receive a late slip. All tardies are unexcused unless a student brings in a note from a medical or dental office.
EARLY DISMISSALS
Students needing to leave school early must bring a note to the Health/Attendance office before 8:00am to receive an EARLY-OUT slip, which is needed to leave a classroom. It is advised that parents not just “show-up” to pick up their children, but instead notify the Health/Attendance office as soon as possible to give time to find your student. Students leaving early will meet their parent in the Health/Attendance office to be signed out for the day. It is also important to notify the Health/Attendance office if parents leave the student in someone else’s care while they are away.
**Only those people who are on the student’s emergency contact list can pick up a student. Parents please make sure you are listed as your student’s emergency contacts as well as anyone you give permission to pick up your child. Additions to a student’s contact list can be made by contacting the Registrar’s office. If in an emergency, someone other than a parent needs to pick up a student, the attendance office will need the request in writing stating who is picking up and their contact number.
HEALTH OFFICE –
Medication Policy
All medication must be submitted in the original container with the student’s name clearly written on it. Medication sent to school in plastic bags, envelopes, etc., will not be accepted. Students may not carry any medication, inhaler, epi-pen, etc., unless authorized by the Dean’s office. Written authorization from a parent must accompany medication. Request for Medication to be taken During School available in the Health/ Attendance office. This policy applies to “over-the counter” as well as prescription medications. The Heath Room attendant does not administer medicine, all medication must be self-administered by the student. Further information about Chaminade’s Health/Attendance Policy and Procedure can be found in the Parent/Student Handbook.

Noah Franchi– President
I am Noah Franchi the 2025-2026 Eagle Council President here at Chaminade College Preparatory. I am a member of the Mussack-Rohrs House. I play baseball and have a passion for surfing. I also have a younger sister, Lucy, whom I love to annoy. I am so excited for all that awaits!
Mr. Halverson, what draws you to wanting to be the principal at Chaminade Middle School?
“I have worked in education since 2005 and have spent the majority of my career working in a junior high setting as either a teacher, coach, or principal. I have always enjoyed working with this age group because I really enjoy seeing the personal growth that happens between 6th and 8th grade. I also enjoy being part of that journey and being a positive influence on student development. In my previous job as an assistant superintendent, I did not have the chance to work directly with students and it was something that I missed tremendously, which it what drew my interest to Chaminade. In addition, I have been familiar with Chaminade for a long time, as my wife works at the high school and my nephew attended all 4 years at the high school.”
Benjamin Yi– Vice President
I am Benjamin Yi, the 2025-2026 Eagle Council Vice President and member of Hunter-Valentine House. I believe that my fellow Executive Board members and I will make the 2025-26 school year the best one yet. My hopes for the next school year are for all the events, activities, and fun masses to stay organized and be prepared for the unexpected. For example, if there is a conflict, we will be quick to adapt and make sure it stays organized.
Mr. Halverson, how do you plan to keep school events and expenses organized?
“I have an amazing team of Marianist educators around me to help support school events and making sure that they are fun, engaging, and on budget. Mrs. Damien, as our Director of Student Engagement, does tremendous work to partner with students, faculty, and parents for all of our activities. We work together on calendaring, event approvals, and pitching new ideas.”
Crosby Sall– Treasurer
My name is Crosby Sall, a member of Mussack-Rohrs House, and I will be next year's Eagle Council Treasurer. I plan to make next year extremely fun, introducing new ideas for our events and making sure everyone feels included/comfortable in this group!
Mr. Halverson, what activities do you like doing outside of school?
“I am an avid baseball fan. In addition to watching both of my boys play baseball year-round, I also have a group of friends that I travel around the country with to see all of the baseball stadiums. I am actually visiting my final two stadiums this summer! I also love to travel in general, enjoy hiking, camping, and learning about history whenever I can. I also REALLY love planning trips (I am famous for my lengthy trip itineraries).”
Liam Lustyan– Secretary
I'm Liam Lustyan, part of the Executive Board at Chaminade as Secretary and member of the AdamsDeLong House. My main goal for next year would be to make Chaminade more organized.
Mr. Halverson, reflecting on your first two years as principal, what has been the most rewarding aspect of leading our school, and what challenges have been the most difficult to overcome?
“I have truly enjoyed working with students, not only as the principal, but as a coach and moderator as well. I have been incredibly blessed to work with such a talented and caring faculty and staff, easily the best group of educators I have worked with in my career. My challenge is always patience. When I get excited about new ideas or would like to see something changed, I always want to see it get done quickly. However, an important lesson for me (and for our students) is that change is a process and requires consultation, partnership, and thoroughness if you want it to be successful.”
Jade Flores– Leader of the House Reps
My name is Jade Flores and I will be your Leader of House Representatives for the 2025-2206 school year. I'm in the Johnson-Apablasa House! Here at Chaminade, I have been actively involved in leadership groups and I have also been on the golf team. One thing I want to bring to the Eagle Council is more interactive activities between the houses.
Mr. Halverson, are there any improvements or additions you would like to bring to Chaminade? “There are already many exciting new things happening at Chaminade already. This summer we will finish installing a brand new gym floor. Next year we will start (and hopefully finish) the creation of two new STEM classrooms behind the library. In the future, I would love to see additional seating for students on campus, a dedicated 8th grade area, and the expansion of our newly installed Peace Garden. Programming-wise, I would like to continue to explore the expansion of our trip offerings, explore a culinary program, and expand our arts/drama/dance/visual arts offerings.”

Blessed William Joseph Chaminade said, “We are all missionaries and we consider ourselves on a permanent mission” witnessing the Good News of Jesus Christ. We carry out this mission not only in the classroom, but equally in our Apostolic Works. The word Apostolic is derived from the root word Apostle, meaning “to be commissioned”. We continue the works of the Apostles by bringing the “good news to the poor and marginalized” as our missionary spirit leads us to give a direct service to them through various methods of outreach. The service projects to both the local and global community will provide our students with the opportunity to reflect upon their call to service through the utilization of their own gifts and talents. As a reminder, collection drives do NOT count toward Apostolic Works, only DIRECT SERVICE experiences count towards the requirement.
Summer Apostolic Works
All 7th and 8th graders for the 2025-2026 school year may complete ½ of their hours during the Summer months. Students who complete hours must follow the guidelines stated on our Apostolic Works information page found HERE All hours should be done at a non-profit organization under supervision. After completing the service, students should log their hours into X2vol. Hours will be approved at the start of the school year by Campus Ministry. New students to Chaminade (any grade) cannot begin their hours until the start of the school year.

Light the Night
October 18– 20th Anniversary
As we celebrate our 20th anniversary of walking at Light the Night, we look forward to raising awareness and money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. More details will be released this August, but make sure to put it on your calendar. You do not want to miss this special evening of service!
The Justice Fair will now be in October. This three-day event on campus gives students an opportunity to create a small business and sell craft items or game experiences. All the money raised during the week is donated to various charities. Stay tuned for more information in Religion classes and the CTW with the application process.

Tackle Football
Practices begin August 2. Information for tackle football will be available on the new Chaminade Middle School Athletics Web-page via the Parent Portal with links to the 2025 Tackle Football Calendar, Tackle Football General Information and the Tackle Football Release and Medical Information & Physical Exam Certification Form. Additional registration information will be sent to families that have expressed interest in participating in mid-July. A Medical Physical Exam, dated no earlier than November 15, 2024 is required to play Tackle Football at Chaminade Middle School. Physical Exams are not required for any other sport at Chaminade Middle School.
Fall Sports and Year-Round Sports
All other Fall and Year-Round Sport Tryouts and Practices will not begin until after the start of school, August 13. The Tryouts Schedule will be posted in early August on the Chaminade Middle School Athletics Web-page and the Middle School Athletic Calendar. All students interested in playing a sport will need to signup and submit a Middle School Athletics Participation & Release form prior to the tryout. A link to sign up and to the consent form will be posted on the Tryouts Schedule and CTW in August, just prior to the start of the tryouts. Students may not participate in tryouts without submitting the 2025-26 Athletic Participation & Release Form. Registration and team information will be provided once teams have been selected.
Tryouts for Winter Season Sports will take place in November and tryouts for Spring Season Sports will begin in late February. There are no pre-season practices or trainings for any sports.

The goal the office of Student Engagement is to provide opportunities for students to embrace leadership roles and develop positive character traits, explore their gifts and talents, and create lasting memories and friendships. Whether it be an all-student assembly or a specific club, there is something for everyone to enjoy. We offer more than 40 different clubs in the areas of leadership, special interest, and performing arts. Students will be introduced to a variety of programs on Friday, September 12 at our annual Club Fair. Groups that begin prior to September 12 will be advertised in the CTW.
Marianist Family Spirit is alive within our eight houses as part of our House System. Each student will be a part of a mixed-grade house working towards a common goal throughout the school year, to win the house cup! Students participate in friendly competitions, spirit assemblies, and a spring semester Field Day event. For more information, click on the Student Engagement quick-link in the CTW.
MIXED-GRADE LEVEL ADVISORY
The goal of our Marianist House System is to build community across our campus, between grade levels while allowing students to connect with faculty mentors. Houses meet to begin the week and receive campus communications. At the end of the week, advisory groups participate in character building, life skills development and community bonding activities with members of their house. The advisory period is a required part of the school day on Mondays and Fridays.

New students will be introduced to their houses at your August orientation events. You will also meet your WEB leaders who will mentor you throughout your first year.
MOCK TRIAL
This year’s Mock Trial applications will be made available in the CTW (Chaminade This Week) on August 15th. Completed applications must be returned by Tuesday, August 19th. Auditions will take place August 20th – 22nd from 3:00pm – 5:00pm. The team roster will be posted Friday, August 22nd by 7:00pm.
Team practices will begin the week of August 25th. A parent meeting will be scheduled during the week to deliver more information about the Mock Trial season. The case we will be working on will be released in early September.
Audition Requirement:
Research, write, and memorize a 2-minute (minimum) constructive speech. You should take the position of being FOR or AGAINST the topic of choice. Include a hook, two topic points with evidence and citations of sources, and a conclusion. This speech must be memorized and delivered as a speech in-person. Your topic choices are: “Children under 14 should not be allowed on social media” or “The voting age should be lowered”. Sign & submit the parent information and permission Google form after reading with parents/ guardians. The form will be included in the application placket.
ROBOTICS– Team 83
Eagle Engineering Team 83, our middle school Robotics, is recruiting students and parents to get involved early for the new Vex Robotics Competition and this season’s game, Push Back. No experience is necessary. Just curious? Check our FAQ Page
We need to gather information on both our returning students and potential new team members so we can communicate our plans for the coming year and provide information about optional workshops and build sessions going on this summer at the high school. The deadline to join the team is September 15 but by getting involved early, you can get a valuable head start on learning and creating a great robot for 2025-26.

EAGLE DANCE TEAM TRY-OUTS
It’s almost audition time for the Eagle Dance Team! All 6th, 7th or 8th grade boys or girls with Intermediate to Advanced level dance experience are welcome to audition for the team. We will be learning the routine on Tuesday, August 19 and Wednesday, August 20 from 3:15pm-5:00pm in the Gym.
