Education for the whole person: Preparing students of character and distinction for future success For 90 years, Chaminade High School has provided young men of New York with a rigorous, well-rounded education. The Long Island Catholic school for boys not only prepares students for the most demanding of college curricula, but also equips them to be successful in all stages and aspects of life. Chaminade’s commitment is to “achieve an education for the whole person.” The school advances the mission of a contemporary Catholic education — combining a classic liberal-arts curriculum and deep respect for the Marianist educational tradition with modern pedagogical advances and state-of-the-art technologies. That balance of tradition and innovation is highly unique. It requires Chaminade’s leaders to continually integrate new tools and programs that both complement its proven approach and empower its students with future-ready knowledge and skills. And it’s working: Each year, 100 percent of Chaminade graduates go on to attend colleges, universities, prep schools, or service academies. Preparing students for a lifetime of informed financial decisions is a key component of Chaminade’s commitment to holistic education and academic excellence across disciplines. Since 2014, a unique partnership with Bloomberg has helped Chaminade empower its graduates with financial knowledge that positions them for future success.
“ When parents see the lab during open houses and tours, they are blown away that a high school can provide this type of resource for their children.” Bro. Thomas J. Cleary, S.M., Chaminade’s President

Integrating finance education into a storied institutional tradition Chaminade’s program launched in 2014 with 16 Bloomberg Terminals. A state-of the art Financial Literacy Lab on campus — known as the Bloomberg Business Center — now houses 20 Terminals used by students daily. The class — taken by every junior and senior — covers a wide range of financial and business topics, including equity and fixed income markets, interest rates, and currencies. (It also addresses college costs and basic financial tools like credit cards, mortgages and retirement accounts.) Terminals inform the course’s ongoing discussions of stocks and bonds, world equity markets, and financial news. “We are fortunate to have an active and committed alumni association and a robust advancement strategy to utilize in building support for our programs and initiatives,” says Bro. Thomas J. Cleary, S.M., Chaminade’s President. “As many of our alumni have moved on to positions in the financial industry, the Bloomberg Terminal initiative was a natural fit for philanthropy.” While many Chaminade graduates pursue careers in business and finance, the financial literacy course serves students of all interests. Developing an understanding of personal finance and financial markets is useful for all students in their daily lives — especially as they go on to navigate life decisions as future homeowners, parents, and leaders of their communities.

Using the Bloomberg Terminal to empower students with hands-on financial learning.
Balancing contemporary and classical approaches in a state-of-the-art learning environment Chaminade is blazing a path for other institutions to follow. Chaminade is the only high school in the United States to have 20 Bloomberg Terminals and is the first to house them in a facility the size of their Bloomberg Business Center. Migrating from a single classroom at launch to the larger, more spacious lab has helped Chaminade craft a hands-on, individualized instructional experience for students. Tina Carlstrom, a financial industry veteran and the teacher who started the program, says that with the four additional Terminals and other new technologies, instructors are now “able to toggle from PowerPoints to Bloomberg screens to the internet, all while referencing our live stock ticker showing the S&P 100.” “Each lesson is brought back to the Terminal, so that we’re effectively utilizing this incredible source of information literally at our fingertips,” says Carlstrom. “It brings the curriculum and lessons to a different level, making them current and ‘real.’” Some students reach even higher levels of knowledge. After the program, many choose to work toward the Bloomberg Market Concepts Certification, which supplements classroom teaching. During summers, students can also elect to take fiveday Bloomberg Financial Workshops sponsored by Chaminade, which feature intensive courses on topics like business and portfolio management or marketing and finance research. Chaminade has incorporated the Bloomberg technology into its mathematics curriculum on the junior year and senior year levels, as well. Taken all together, the Bloomberg Business Center and financial literacy program have become huge differentiators for Chaminade among its peers.
“No other high school in the area, or perhaps in the country, has a financial lab like that at Chaminade,” says Bro. Thomas. “When parents see the lab during open houses and tours, they are blown away that a high school can provide this type of resource for their children.” The lab serves a resource for more than just students. Chaminade alumni — who are highly supportive of the finance education project — can use the Bloomberg Terminals on an availability basis. And though Chaminade has continued to solicit financial support for the program from those alums and other private and institutional sources, the project is firmly in place. Bro. Thomas says the initiative has been baselined into Chaminade’s budget as part of the school’s “complete commitment” to the program’s success and firm belief in the tangible benefits it provides to students both during and after high school. “While it is clearly a significant investment, it is well worth it. We are preparing the students for a lifetime of informed financial decisions,” says Bro. Thomas. He advises other school leaders who pursue financial literacy projects and labs to make clear plans for integrating Bloomberg technology into the school’s curriculum. The key is operating with “a total commitment to making this initiative work.” “The value that the Terminal and the programs to support them bring and how they enhance a school’s curriculum — even a curriculum as traditional as Chaminade’s — is incalculable,” says Kevin St. Pierre, an alumnus and experienced Wall Street veteran who has returned to the school as a full-time teacher of the financial literacy program.
