Dear Friends,
Music connects us beyond cultural, geographical, and political borders. It invites us to honor our differences while also learning from one another. Our 2026 festival, Confluence: Our Shared Voices, is a celebration of musical ideas from around the world that come together to shape the music we love.
We begin with Sounds of America, commemorating America at 250 years, from Bernstein’s West Side Story and Copland’s Appalachian Spring to spirituals, jigs, and American Indian folklore. Songs from Home is filled with melodies by Reena Esmail, Lembit Beecher, Kodály, and Dvořák that lovingly evoke their cultural roots.
Musical Postcards explores composers inspired by other lands—from Brahms and Tchaikovsky to two world premieres that pay tribute to Rilke’s Sonnets to Orpheus and Nina Simone. The festival concludes joyfully with Unity, featuring beloved classics by some of the most enduring voices in music. Join us for a summer of music that transcends boundaries and brings together our shared voices!

CMNW presents OREGON BACH FESTIVAL Celebratory Cantatas
Monday, July 6 @ 8 PM | Kaul Auditorium, Reed College
One of the great masters of celebratory music is Bach who composed many of his most spirited secular works—including these cantatas—for university ceremonies honoring exceptional professors and scholars who helped the arts, scholarship, and curiosity flourish. These jubilant works—of delightful wit, virtuosity, and musical pageantry—remind us that universities have long been gathering places for ideas, creativity, and community.
Maestro Jos van Veldhoven leads the Oregon Bach Festival’s esteemed soloists with the Berwick Academy Orchestra for this joyous evening of music!

NEW@NIGHT Lost Freedom: A Memory
Wednesday, July 8 @ 7 PM | Alberta Rose Theatre
Following its sold-out performance at Portland Japanese Garden last year, CMNW is thrilled to share Oregon composer/violist Kenji Bunch and George Takei’s Lost Freedom: A Memory again. Inspired by autobiographical accounts of the incarceration of Japanese American citizens in World War II, Lost Freedom weaves together music and spoken word in a profound exploration of a chilling time in American history. Classical and Broadway star Christòpheren Nomura narrates Takei’s story in this special evening of new music that also includes recent works by Steven Banks, Paul Wiancko, and Giovanni Sollima.

Friday, July 10 @ 8 PM | Kaul Auditorium, Reed College
Grammy Award-winning mandolinist, singer, songwriter, composer, and MacArthur Genius Grant Fellow, Chris Thile, returns to CMNW for the first time since his sold-out 2017 performance! Acclaimed as a multifaceted musical talent, The Guardian describes this master mandolinist as "that rare being: an all-round musician,” and NPR has hailed him a "genre-defying musical genius." Thile is a founding member of string bands Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek, and has collaborated with countless luminaries from Yo-Yo Ma to Fiona Apple to Edgar Meyer. For four years, Thile hosted public radio favorite Live from Here with Chris Thile (formerly known as A Prairie Home Companion).

Jazz Notes: Gershwin Piano Concerto
Thursday, July 2 @ 8 PM | Kaul Auditorium, Reed College
Whether first or 10th-generation Americans, virtually all of us come from someplace else, carrying the heartbeat and soul of our ancestry—as do America’s greatest composers. The rhythm and harmony of Samuel Barber’s string quartet (encompassing the powerfully moving “Adagio for Strings”) and Lembit Beecher’s heartfelt Stories From My Grandmother contain threads anchored in the past but driven by a new energy. Likewise, Gershwin’s Piano Concerto fuses Jewish and Eastern-European folk (Klezmer) traditions with African and Caribbean influences in a full-fledged celebration of America’s truly new music: jazz!

Folk Voices: Dvořák "Dumky" Trio
Sunday, July 5 @ 4 PM

Music is a vital connection to one’s culture and heritage, and few composers have harnessed its power of memory quite like those featured in this concert. Dvořák’s epic “Dumky” Piano Trio captures the essence and thrill of Dumka—Slavic and Ukrainian historical epics—while Leoš Janáček’s Pohádka and Zoltán Kodály’s Adagio embrace their unique Czech and Hungarian musical traditions. We will also celebrate the world premiere of a CMNW-commissioned string quartet by Indian American composer Reena Esmail, whose music bridges the worlds of Indian and Western classical music.

Crossing Borders: Brahms Piano Quartet
Thursday, July 9 @ 7:30 PM | Patricia Reser Center for the Arts
Saturday, July 11 @ 8 PM | Kaul Auditorium, Reed College
Few things in our fractured world bring us together quite like music, connecting us with our shared humanity across borders and time. Premiered by Clara Schumann in 1861 and famous for its fiery "Rondo alla Zingarese" finale, Brahms’s youthful and exuberant Piano Quartet in G Minor transports us to both Brahms’s youth (he was just 23) and to Hungary with its folk inspiration. Two soaring solo works by Austrian American composer Fritz Kreisler magically take us to Vienna in the hands of virtuoso violinist and CMNW Protégé Alumnus Claire Wells. This program even spans the mightiest oceans with a new CMNW-commissioned premiere by Donghoon Shin, whose music encompasses influences of both his Korean heritage and his London home.

Souvenir: Tchaikovsky Sextet
Sunday, July 12 @ 4 PM | Lincoln Performance Hall, PSU
Monday, July 13 @ 8 PM | Kaul Auditorium, Reed College
Music can transport us through both time and space, and great composers continually draw on this miraculous sound-memory to create “musical postcards” that express their memories, and inspire ours. Adventure awaits with Maurice Ravel’s Chansons madécasses, inspired by the African tropical isles and set to evocative French poetry. We’ll also travel in time to an exciting era of music in America with the world premiere of Steven Banks’s homage to one of our nation’s most influential musicians, Nina Simone. And finally, Tchaikovsky’s famous Souvenir de Florence, a musical postcard, captures the warmth and vibrancy of his escapes to Italy from Russian winters.

Echoes of Home
Wednesday, July 1 @ 7 PM | The Old Church
Some of the most innovative composers draw inspiration from their own national heritage. From Ligeti’s combination of Hungarian folk and modernism and Glimpses of Muqam Chebiyat highlighting traditions of Uyghur Muqam from China's Xinjiang region, to Portland’s own Kirsten Volness’s Shima Enaga and Kit Armstrong’s Études de dessin, inspired by Chinese ink painting and calligraphy, these are the echoes of many places called home. Plus, hear Ligeti’s seventh Musica Ricercata on The Old Church’s incredible pipe organ.
With music by Portland’s Kenji Bunch and narrated by Christòpheren Nomura, this special event brings George Takei’s script to life. Inspired by autobiographical accounts of the incarceration of Japanese American citizens in World War II, Lost Freedom: A Memory weaves together music and spoken word in a profound exploration of a chilling time in American history.
