Mayor Warren, Council President Scott Call for City Requirement for New RPD Officers Having Officers Live in the City Will Benefit Neighborhoods say Warren & Scott
Mayor Lovely A. Warren and City Council President Loretta C. Scott have announced their support for a residency requirement for all newly hired Rochester Police Department Officers. To achieve this goal, Mayor Warren and President Scott are calling upon Rochester’s New York State Legislature delegation to introduce and support legislation to allow the City to adopt a local law creating the requirement. The Mayor and Council President have sent a joint letter to the entire delegation asking them to take action. “Having our police officers live in Mayor Warren (left) and Council President Scott the community they protect and serve will build relationships and strengthen our neighborhoods,” said Mayor Warren. “Ultimately, both officers and their neighbors will benefit and, I’m confident, our city will be safer because of connections made. Also, we will keep vital dollars and resources in Rochester rather than see them leave our community.” Only 47 of the Rochester Police Department's 713 sworn officers (6.6%) live in the city, according to the RPD open data portal. Eighty-six of the department's 181 civilian employees (48%) live in the city. “As cities across the country continue to reimagine policing, our neighbors in Buffalo and Syracuse are asking for the same opportunity to implement residency requirements for their police forces,” said Vice President Willie J. Lightfoot, “This policy change has the potential to make a significant impact on our community by enhancing our opportunity to recruit a diverse police force, creating positive economic impacts by keeping money in the City, and making our neighborhoods safer.” Rochester Police Department Chief La'Ron Singletary affirmed Monday that he is a city resident. None of the department's three deputy chiefs live in the city.

Monroe County Executive Adam Bello announced recently that the county is providing personal protective equipment to local public, private and charter schools as they prepare for reopening. Equipment distribution was held this week at Monroe County’s Fleet Center. “Ensuring the continued health, safety and wellbeing of students, teachers, staff and families in our school systems is essential,” said Bello. “The COVID-19 crisis has brought our community together in so many ways we never expected and I’m proud to work with our school communities to make sure they can reopen safely -- with the equipment that they need -and continue to provide our children with the quality education they deserve.” The PPE are part of a supply acquired by Monroe County to address health and safety needs related to the pandemic.

Board of Elections Online Absentee Ballot Portal Open for Nov. 3 Election Ballots Commissioners Ralph Mohr and Jeremy Zellner have announced that the Erie County Board of Elections’ online absentee ballot portal is now accepting requests for the Tuesday, Nov. 3 general election. The portal may be found on the BOE website at www.elections.erie.gov. Under legislation signed by Governor Cuomo last week, every New Yorker is eligible to vote absentee because of the Covid-19 pandemic. This means all 609,000 active voters in Erie County may request and vote by means of a mail-in ballot. Registered voters may also check the status of their request through the portal. In addition to Election Day, there will be nine days of early voting at 37 polling sites in Erie County from Saturday, Oct. 24 to Sunday, Nov. 1. Voters in Erie County may cast ballots at any early voting location regardless of where they live.

Researchers have found that African Americans have a much higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias and in fact, are twice as likely as White Americans to be so impacted. It is the 4th leading cause of death among older African Americans. That is why the Alzheimer’s Association Western New York Chapter’s special fivepart webinar series, “Facing Dementia in the Black/African American Community” is so important. It will not only address these disparities, but offer experts from the national Alzheimer’s Association and the Buffalo area who will speak about the issue, local resources and how to get involved in finding solutions. Among the speakers will be Dr. Carl Hill, the Vice President of Scientific Engagement for the Alzheimer’s Association. “We know that African Americans are disproportionately affected and are twice as likely to develop Alzheimer’s and other dementia than White Americans…so it’s crucial that we understand the many factors that might be involved,“ said Dr. Hill in a recent interview. His presentation will focus on how to overcome health disparities with participation in critical

The Dogon people of West Africa are shrouded in mystery due to their knowledge of astronomy that pre-dates modern technology by thousands of years. About 300,000 members of the Dogon live in Mali, and they have known information about the stars before telescopes were invented. The Dogon say that their knowledge of astronomy involves contact with extraterrestrial life dating back to around 3,200 BC. The Dogon and Sirius A The Dogon are renowned for knowledge about the Sirius star system dating back to 3,200 B.C. The West African people knew specific information about Sirius A, which is the brightest star in Earth’s night sky. The Dogon knew that a much dimmer star, now known as Sirius B, is extremely dense and has a 50-year elliptical orbit around the bright Sirius A star. Long before modern science Western scientists discovered the Sirius system in 1862. The star system is 8.6 light-years away from Earth. In 2005, astronomers were finally able to precisely mark the Sirius B star using the Hubble Space Telescope. Historians and scientists struggle to explain the Dogon’s understanding of that specific star system. Successful Backpack and Food Giveaway This past Saturday, August 29th, Congressman Brian Higgins, Erie County legislator Howard J. Johnson and Fillmore District Councilmember Mitch Nowakowski, hosted a backpack and school supplies giveaway. Unity Coalition (with generous support from “Rooted in Love Inc.”) supplied over 200 boxes of produce and over 400 hot dogs and hamburgers. Hundred of families benefited from this and other services, such as the Board of Elections signing people on the spot to become Elections Inspectors; providing absentee ballot applications; and in conjunction with Unity, registering over 100 people to vote. Over 500 people in all were benefitted in some way along with these and other activities i.e. with Census takers providing their services. “We were pleased to work with Legislator Johnson, Councilmember Nowakowski, The response To Love Center and the Buffalo Central Terminal on this great event,” Congressman Higginssaid. Many of the backpacks were donated by the Teachers Desk and the “Pancho Packs” program provided $130 worth of school supplies for each backpack.

ayla Witherspoon has been a member of the Buffalo Philharmonic Chorus since 2014. She is currently serving her first term as the Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Chorus. Kayla has been a member of Humboldt Parkway Baptist Church since 1997, where Rev. John T. Hilliard is pastor. She has served as the assistant director of the Humboldt Parkway Baptist Church Mass Choir since 2018. She has also served as Junior Usher Board supervisor and as director of the Youth and Young Adult Choir for over a decade. Kayla is currently a member of the Renovation Church of Buffalo, where Rev. Brek Cocktrell is pastor. She serves as a Kayla Witherspoon member of the church’s Dream Team. Kayla is employed by the Erie County Democratic Committee as a Canvass Director and for the Erie County Board of Elections as a Junior Election Clerk. In past roles, she has taken on marketing, internal communications, vendor relations, community outreach, and field training. Those were the opening calls to action from WNY Liberation Collective and WNY Peace Center who organized the Friday August 28 protest march called "The Hertel Hurdle" to simultaneously stand in solidarity with last Friday’s Washington D.C. march demanding racial equality and criminal justice reform. On that day, tens of thousands gathered from across the country at the Lincoln Memorial in the nation's capital on the 57th anniversary of the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The march, organized by the Reverend Al Sharpton and the National Action Network, was called the “Get Your Knee Off Our Necks” Commitment March on Washington, and featured speeches from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial followed by a march to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. -Take Back Your VoiceThe Buffalo protesters assembled peacefully at Main and Hertel where they marched down to Buffalo Police Precinct D – District continuing to raise awareness and make demands for social justice while encouraging protestors to “Take Back Your Voice, Take Back Your City.” Protesters were met with wide-spread support by the surrounding community and spoke on unity amongst all people under the common goal of collective liberation. to the Hertel area they were disrupted by two angry male counter protestors identified as Joseph Noughton and Michael Cremen yelling multiple racial slurs, including the N word. One of the men, Michael Cremen, was wielding a knife. Photographer Cams Banks who captured images and lives in the area said she’s not surprised by what happened, stating, “as protestors, I think it’s a risk that we take, you never know who is going to show their true colors when real problems arise.” The Liberation Collective reported in a Face Book post that the protesters remained calm and blocked the hateful counter protesters attempts to gain access to the larger crowd and that the Buffalo police, who were present, chose to guard the man yelling the racial slurs. (The video went viral on social media that shows the incident). On Monday afternoon, police released an update, saying 47-year-old Cremen (who had the knife) of Franklinville, had been taken into custody and charged with harassment, criminal possession of a weapon, and menacing. The menacing was charged as a hate crime based on the use of racial slurs by Cremen. A police report was filed and an investigation began on Friday. Mayor Byron Brown addressed the incident on his Sunday morning radio show saying the event did not have a permit, but that there were no injuries and no damage to property and that the police department is interviewing the complaint. arent and community leaders are calling out Buffalo Public Schools for late and inadequate planning related to a virtual start for the school year, and a lack of support for working and high-need families. A family/community press conference was held Tuesday September 1st at 11am in front of School #77/PUSH Buffalo, located at 429 Plymouth Ave. The parent leaders also sent a letter to Superintendent Kriner Cash and the Buffalo Board of Education outlining their concerns, which include requests for more robust guidance and support for•Working parents (especially single parents with multiple children) •Students and families with special needs/special education designation •Limited English proficiency/multilingual students and families •Students and families who are living in poverty and in home and community environments that are not ideal for virtual learning at best, and dangerous at worst. Overcrowding/lack of privacy in homes, lead poisoning/environmental hazards, domestic and community violence, mental health and substance abuse, and economic/housing insecurity are pervasive in Buffalo homes. Parent leaders have previously asserted that BPS has failed to have meaningful engagement and timely, accountable and transparent planning with families as re-opening plans have been developed. Multiple requests have been made from parents and other stakeholders for BPS to provide in-person supports and/or provide access to their school buildings for students and families who need childcare and specialized services. “Virtual learning has not worked for the majority of our families, and we have no information about school schedules and expectations for parents and students with the first day of school only a week away,” said Jessica Bauer Walker, President of the BPS CHW Parent Association. “We are here to partner, but we cannot pretend like ‘we are all in this together’ when our requests to help our kids and other families most in need continue to be ignored.”
UB Graduate School of Education to Cancel Classes to Host Teach-in for Racial Equity BUFFALO, N.Y. – To start the academic year, the University at Buffalo Graduate School of Education will temporarily cancel all classes and activities. However, learning will continue, and in its place, the school will hold two days of mandatory instruction on an issue gripping the nation: understanding the factors that have led to the countless murders of Black people. The two-day, virtual event – to be held Sept. 3-4 – “Make Good Trouble” Now: Teach-In for Racial Equity, will employ the teach-in, a form of activism that began during the anti-war movement of the 1960s, to educate faculty, staff and students on the root causes and effects of racial injustice and systemic racism, particularly in education. The discussions are part of a larger national dialogue on structural racism sparked by the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis in May, and reignited by the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Aug. 23. “The Graduate School of Education recognizes that it cannot make good on its mission and vision or on its commitment to equity, diversity, justice and inclusion without ensuring that all faculty, staff and students have a more fundamental understanding of the systematic violence against Black people and the role that education has played and continues to play in perpetuating systems of oppression,” says Suzanne Rosenblith, PhD, dean of the UB Graduate School of Education. The event, which is also open to Graduate School of Education alumni and invited community partners and friends, is scheduled on Thursday, Sept. 3, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and on Friday, Sept. 4, from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Participation is required for Graduate School of Education faculty, staff and students. A graduate of Seneca Vocational High School Mr. Robinson was born November 24, 1953 in Buffalo NY. In addition to his mother, Willa Mae Schultz of Buffalo, NY; Mr. Robinson leaves to cherish his memories his daughters, Terri D Standifer of Chesapeake, Virginia and Jornelle S. Robinson of Fayetteville; one son Calvin A. There are a number of ways parents can learn about Schoology, Ms. Botticelli offered. First there are videos available on the district website made by student tech leaders. Go to buffalochools.org to learn how to log onto Schoology no matter what device you are using. Another way is through virtual training sessions for parents and Facebook Live sessions which will be available to explain Schoology. -What if your Child Doesn’t Have a Device Yet?Devices are currently available for all students in grades 2 through 12. Families can visit the new Center for Innovation, Technology and Training at 1515 South Park Avenue to pick up a device or hotspot. Devices for students in grades PK-1 have been ordered and will be distributed to families as soon as possible. Schools should be communicating with families prior to the re-opening. Because of digital divide in parts of the city and the numbers of homeless or displaced children, the issue of access to a tablet or a computer is a very real. On Transitioning of Buffalo Native Cliff Robinson and Legend John Thompson It seems like yesterday when my friends and I would go to MLK Park (Formerly Humboldt Park), and see Cliff Robinson playing in the Randy Smith summer basketball league. He stood out among many good basketball players in Buffalo. Cliff was always cool calm and collected on the local courts. He played at Riverside HS and went to University of Connecticut and helped put that program on the map. No one in our group had ever heard about UCNN Huskies basketball program until Cliff Robinson went to the school. Cliff helped UCONN win the 1988 NIT Championship. His NBA career was legendary due to his consistent play and that sweet Jumper from the outside which was Cliff Robinson not customary for a big man in those days. The 6’ 10’ power forward played in over 1,300 career games and had an iron man streak of 451 consecutive NBA games. Cliff was the tallest player to score over one thousand three pointers in his career and only Dirk Nowitzki and Rashad Lewis are currently now the other two to join this club. Cliff Robinson was always himself when you saw him in the community; a nice man that donated his time and cared about his people. Hopefully Cliff can get into the Basketball Hall of Fame via the Veteran Committee. He truly deserves it. Rest in POWER! Another basketball legend John Thompson made his transition earlier this week. Coach Thompson is best known for having a successful College Basketball Program at Georgetown University. The Georgetown Hoyas won an NCAA Basketball Championship, but his biggest accomplishment is that 97% of his players stayed all four years and graduated with a Degree. Coach John Thompson not only prepared his kids for playing basketball games, but for winning in LIFE. Coach John Thompson became first Black Head Coach to win a National Championship, but Coach Thompson was so much more to Black People. Coaches John Thompson, Don Chaney, at Temple and Nolan Richardson at Arkansas made sure our kids graduated College, and put themselves in a position to give back to our community and win in life. Toronto Blue Jays Update
The Toronto Blue Jays went on a 6-game winning streak to put them back into the American East race in Major League Baseball. The Jays lost two of their starting pitchers to injuries. Matt Shoemaker and Trent Thornton has a sore shoulder and inflammation of the elbow respectively. Thornton’s elbow problems continue from late last season and must be a major concern for the Jays. The Blue Jays bats are getting hot with Teoscar Hernandez, Travis Shaw, Valdmir Guerrero, Jr., Lourdes Gurriel, Jr., and injured Bo Bichette. The team must find some starting pitchers to go along with ace starter Hyun-jin Ryu. Ryu came over from the LA Dodgers in the winter. Its more amazing that of all the high-quality talent Dodgers have with their organization that they can give up star players like Ryu, Matt Kemp and many more but still have several players to replace them. The Jays probably will call up pitchers Anthony Kay and Jacob Waguespack from Alternative site in Rochester to put into starting rotation. Hopefully they won’t get rocked like they did last time with the big-league team. The Jays will be home to the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles coming to Sahlen Stadium in downtown Buffalo for a series of games. These teams lack good pitching as well and can be an excellent opportunity to win some games. G.O.D. Wins Best Screenplay at the 2020 ABFF! On Sunday August 30 hometown filmmaker Addison Henderson earned the win for Best Screenplay at the 2020 American Black Festival for his NightOwl Republic film G.O.D. (Givers of Death), an apocalyptic urban sci-fi tale he shot in the city of Buffalo about an entire city’s quest for peace amidst the chaos of a pandemic. Henderson not only wrote but also directed and starred in the film. In his virtual acceptance speech he didn’t hesitate to shout out his beloved city. “The whole journey to making this film was a healing process for me, I wrote this movie as meditation for those of us who’ve experienced great loss and question the meaning to our lives…This is for my parents, my father the original story teller in my life and my mom the rock who always and still pushes me to greatness, this is for my homeland my city Buffalo NY...thank you for giving me soul.” Henderson wrote the film during downtime while working with Chadwick Boseman on 21 bridges and brought the production of his film to the City of Buffalo, hiring local cast and crew to complete the project.

New Mural Honoring John Brent at The Buffalo Zoo Truly A Beautiful Work of Art and a Fitting Tribute to an Amazing Man! Plenty of dignitaries, pride and lots of sunshine marked the official unveiling of the John Brent mural at the northeast corner of the zoo, near Parkside Avenue and Amherst Street recently. As part of its Public Art Initiative, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery enlisted artist James Cooper III to create the mural which "celebrates the life and legacy of John Brent, Buffalo’s first African American architect and a notable civic leader." It was done in collaboration with late local historian Christine Parker. Mr. Brent was Buffalo’s first African-American architect. Besides gates three and four at the zoo, Brent also designed the national landmark old Entrance Court which still stands, and where the mural is located. He also designed the now-demolished Michigan Avenue YMCA and was also the first president of the Buffalo-branch NAACP. Melanin: What Makes Black People Black “Black people must ‘know thyself’ and to know yourself is to know melanin”

he general consensus is that there is only one race, the human race. That essentially, we are all the same. Race is deemed to be a social construct used to create division and the illusion of inequality. But the truth is, we are NOT the same. There is a biological and physiological difference in the races. And that difference is melanin. As a black person, you are different. You are a special, unique, and powerful being unlike any other racial group on this planet. It is imperative that Black people know the basics about melanin and how to nourish melanin. This will sustain the physical, mental, and spiritual health necessary to generate the change so desperately needed in our lives and communities. What is Melanin? Dr. Llaila Afrika explains that melanin is the, “biochemical substance that drives physical, mental, emotional and spiritual life”. Melanin is an organic dark carbon chemical substance that is present in every cell, tissue, organ, and system in the body. Melanin is present in our skin, eyes, muscles, nerves, digestive and reproductive systems. Melanin is found in the environment, lakes, soil, plants, the atmosphere, and animals. Melanin regulates all bodily functions, cycles, circadian rhythms, and glands in the body. Melanin is the driving force of all life. The pineal gland located in the middle of the brain is responsible for the secretion of melanin. The Pineal Gland is the master gland, not the Pituitary gland. Shaneequewa Samuels explains that the pineal gland is the “principal seat of our soul, and the place in which all our thoughts are formed”. All races have melanin, but Black people have the highest concentration of melanin out of all the races. Black people have 12 melanin centers in the brain, while our white counterparts only have 2 melanin centers in the brain. Our white counterparts also have 60-80% pineal gland calcification (the inability to secrete melanin). Melanin is most readily visible in our skin, eyes, and hair. Melanin is, as Dr. Afrika states “What makes Black people Black”. Melanin is how we were able to build the pyramids, establish prosperous civilizations, create the disciplines of medicine, astrology, mathematics, and engineering. Melanin is the reason we survived the Middle Passage and chattel slavery. Melanin is how this country was built; with the blood, sweat, tears and power of our ancestors. Melanin is the reason Ossie Davis says, “I find, in being black, a thing of beauty: a joy; a strength; a secret cup of gladness.” Melanin is our power, our intelligence, our ingenuity, and our strength. How to Nourish Melanin When Black people nourish their melanin properly, they are able to heal themselves in half the time as melanin recessive people. When black people nourish their melanin properly, they are more productive, have more mental clarity, improved cognitive function, better health, and an overall improved outlook on life. There are three primary ways to nourish melanin: •Sunlight •Intermittent fasting •Avoid Tap Water The pineal gland’s ability to secrete melanin is sunlight dependent. The more sunlight exposure, the more melanin is secreted. Black people need 2 hours of sun, at least 4 times a week. Those with less melanin only need 15 minutes of sun, 3 times a week. Intermittent fasting allows the body to remove toxins from the body and self-heal. An amazing process called autophagy occurs where the body will recycle defective and diseased parts of cells and proteins and regeneration and healing occurs. This only occurs during fasting. Intermittent fasting also allows for more pineal gland activation to occur. Ideally, we should only eat during the hours of 12pm and 7pm. The fluoride in tap water causes the pineal gland to calcify which prevents the secretion of melanin. Drink bottled water or purchase a water filter that specifically removes fluoride. As Black people we must understand that we are not the same. We cannot eat, think, or live our lives in a way that dishonors who we are. We are a melanin dominant race and we need to live our lives with the knowledge and understanding of the role melanin plays in our lives. We must sever ties with Western modern medicine, the Standard American Diet, and Eurocentric ways of thinking and living that diminish and negate the power of melanin in our lives. Alzheimer's, Dementia and Developing a Strategy for Our People
O
ne of the values that is prominent in our religious and ethnic practice is the necessity to honor our elders. Scripture teaches us: Deuteronomy 5:16 (NIV) “Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you While the wisdom of the African proverbs proclaims: "Those who respect the elderly pave their own road toward success." Sadly, many of our elders suffer from debilitating diseases that infect the august of their years with pain, suffering and mental confusion. One George such disease is Alzheimer’s which is a form of dementia which attacks NICHOLAS the neurological functions of our elders. Like many physical and mental diseases in America, African Americans suffer at a disproportionate rate of Alzheimer’s. African Americans are twice as likely as whites to struggle with Alzheimer’s but less likely to receive a proper diagnosis from their health care provider. Early diagnosis is critical to develop a treatment plan to enhance the quality of life for those living with Alzheimer’s but all too often this is not the experience for our elders. Several key points that are critical in our developing of a strategy to help our people: •Developing Alzheimer's and dementia is not an inevitable part of getting older. •Alzheimer's disease and dementia are not the same. Alzheimer’s is a disease and Dementia is a general term for a decline in mental ability severe enough to interfere with daily life. •It is imperative that we educate the community on what Alzheimer's and related dementias are so that they can seek early guidance from their health care provider, the later you seek support, the more stress and financial burden builds. •While African Americans are about two times more likely than whites to have Alzheimer’s and other dementias, they are only 34% more likely to have a diagnosis. •When they are diagnosed, African Americans are typically diagnosed in the later stages of the disease, when they are more cognitively and physically impaired therefore in need of more medical care. •High blood pressure and diabetes are risk factors for Alzheimer’s and other dementias and are more prevalent in the African American community. •The social determinants of health: including lower levels of education, higher rates of poverty, and greater exposure to adversity and discrimination, may also increase risk in African American communities. Lack of information often combined with poor theological practice often creates a stigma within our community when dealing with mental health disorders. As a result we often either do not have the proper information to identify the early symptoms of Alzheimer’s or ignore what we do know because we do not want to face the reality that there is something wrong with our loved one. We even think the loss of mental functions is somehow attributed to demonic activity or some bad behavior on our part. Stop, we need information so we can care for our seniors. To that end I am so blessed to be partnering with the Alzheimer’s Association to provide much needed information and resources on how we can better care for our elders who are struggling with dementia and/or Alzheimer’s. There are many organizations in our region that have valuable resources that we must access to improve the quality of life for our people. The Alzheimer’s Association is a willing partners that has invested their time and talents to provide information to our community on how we can care for our mothers, fathers, husbands, wives and other seniors who are battling the diminishing mental and physical capacity. While there is no known cure for Alzheimer’s there are research projects that are drawing us closer to a cure. In the meantime, there are things that can be done to improve the quality of life for those living with Alzheimer’s and we need to acquire these tools for our people. To that end I am honored to be part of important conference that specifically addresses this issue. We’ve been dealing with a lot in 2020. But nothing has changed our lives more than Covid-19. This Pandemic has had it’s silver linings though not much. First, it’s provided an opportunity for us to spend more time with our families. Second, while on Quarantine we had a chance to see systemic racism under a different light. Another is because of so many deaths we realized the value of our frontline workers. The doctors and nurses who saved lives everyday while putting their own at risk. Let me take this moment to wish you all great strength and health as we continue to fight this virus. One more displacement in our routines by this virus has been a change in the way concerts, social outings or sporting events are conducted. The NBA was able to find a way to restart their season safely despite all of this turmoil. At this point you’ve heard of the Bubble and you know we’re currently in week two of the playoffs. By the time this article will have reached you the Raptors will be into the second round because they swept the wounded Nets 4-0 in the best of seven series. Toronto’s Nick Nurse wins 2019-2020 Coach of the Year Award The closest game of the series was game two where the Nets lost by five. Brooklyn had been decimated by injuries and by players opting out of play for health reasons. The other three games were blowouts. The Nets were outmanned and outgunned. In between game three and game four another important nurse was recognized for outstanding work. This time it was Coach Nurse of the Toronto Raptors. Kyle Lowry and Fred VanVleet presented the Coach of the Year award to Coach Nurse during TNT’s Inside the NBA. Coach Nurse is in his second year as a NBA head coach. Many people expected the raining World Champions to fall short of the playoffs in their defense of their title because of the loss of Kawhi Leonard and some early injuries this season to significant players. But Toronto fought all season to prove them wrong. Coach Nurse stated “this is an organizational award” and couldn’t have done without his players showing up for him. The Raptors have the Celtics up next. Just what the doctor ordered; some revenge for Raptor’s fans!

Exploring Real Estate and Fair Housing Opportunities: Still Much Work to Be Done Antoine Thompson, former Buffalo Council Member and State Senator, is currently the Director of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) located outside of Washington D.C. Founded in 1947, it is the oldest Black real estate trade association in the country. Mr. Thompson officially started his career in real estate locally as an agent for RealtyUSA. The year 2018 marked the 50th Anniversary of the Fair housing Act. Today Black homeownership rates are near the same level as when race-based housing discrimination was declared with the passing of that Act in 1968. Reflecting on last week's article about the new female realty group MMB, and Buffalo's disparity in Black homeowership, he recalled how in the early 2000’s while on the Buffalo Common Council, he was able to pass the Fair Housing Ordinance for the City of Buffalo, which is one of the most racially segregated cities in America today. It’s also in the top five in the country for the largest gap in home ownership between African Americans and Whites. “Although this was a victory,” stated Thompson, “there is still much work that needs to be done.” Buffalo Home ownership stands at 73.5% White and 32.7% Black (Prosperity Now). In 2019, locally some 19,792 mortgages went to Whites and only 900 mortgages went to African Americans (Compliance Tech).
