Last year, our City experienced a horrible tragedy on Genesee Street, 7 people were shot and 3 died in front of the Boys and Girls Club of Rochester. Those accused of committing this atrocity are currently on trial before Monroe County Court Judge Doug Randall. There have been reports that attempts at intimidation have been made against witnesses in Full Page ‐ $300 this trial. “We know that our judicial system is dependent on the ability of every person to receive a fair trial, free from bias and intimidation,” said City Council President Loretta C. Scott, “Tomorrow, I will attend this trial to support those giving testimony and I encourage our community to join me. When violence happens in our community we are often left wondering what to do, we search for a call to action – this is that call. For those who want to see the scales of justice balanced, I encourage you to attend this trial and show support for those testifying.” President Scott will be attending the trial tomorrow morning, Wednesday, October 26th which begins at 9:15 a.m. in the Hall of Justice located at 99 Exchange Blvd. in Downtown Rochester in Judge Randall’s courtroom.

Farrakhan Speaks on Trump - Clinton & Election 2016

Nation of Islam Minister to deliver major address Oct. 30 focusing on the presidential election, Black America the United States future. THE FINAL CALL NEWS -- CHICAGO— The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan will deliver a powerful, honest, insightful and spiritual assessment of the national presidential election, the plight of Black voters and important choices Black America must make if she wishes to survive the fall of the United States. His address will come with days left before voting. The Minister will be speaking at 10 a. m. CST from the headquarters for the Nation of Islam, Mosque Maryam in Chicago. The title of Min. Farrakhan’s subject is, “If Satan Cast Out Satan, He is Divided Against Himself; how then will his kingdom stand?” His message follows an incredible lecture delivered Oct. 16, on the 21st anniversary of the Million Man March, “Come Out of Her My People: A Declaration of Independence.” The message Oct. 30 will be available via national Mrs. Clinton webcast and viewings at Nation of Islam mosques, Min. Farrakhan Mr. Trump and through NOI.org, YouTube.com and via Min. Farrakhan’s official Twitter page Farrakhan to speak Oct. 30 on Trump, Clinton and election 2016 (follow @LouisFarrakhan) and his official Facebook page. The 2016 presidential election is one of the most acrimonious and most important elections in recent years and perhaps in the history of the country. On Tuesday, November 8, Americans are being told vote for “The Lesser of Two Evils” as part of a recognition of the reality of politics in the United States. “No politics of this world can bring about The Kingdom of Heaven on Earth,” said Min. Farrakhan. Mr. Trump calls Hillary Clinton, “Crooked Hillary,” and from the other side, he is called “Lying Trump,” the Minister observed. It was reported that some fact-checking found over three days Mr. Trump told 87 lies in three days, he noted. The Bible teaches (Matthew 12:26): “If Satan cast out Satan, how then can their kingdom stand?” The Honorable Elijah Muhammad, patriarch of the Nation of Islam, warned in the 1960s, in his book The Fall of America, “The National Election”: “Injustice, crooked politics, and the breeding of corruption under crooked politics have been practiced ever since Adam to the presentday rulers.” Unfortunately, he continues, “there are Black politicians who would like to use their Black people for selfish greed and will throw them behind any crook with money. Black politicians of this type have sold their Black brothers to suffering and shame for self-elevation with the crook.”

Many feel it is time for a sober assessment of Black politics and what the Lesser of Two Evils strategy has produced. Critics say it has gotten evil, and little to no justice despite Blacks voting largely for the Democratic Party while the Republican Party often ignores us and scapegoats the Black community. Mr. Trump has tapped into the vein of the common White man, observed Min. Farrakhan. When Mr. Trump said, “Let’s make America great again,” they say he means “Let’s make America White again,” he added. Meanwhile Mrs. Clinton is a dangerous woman, unpopular, distrusted and a hawk, with more war likely regardless of who wins the White House, Min. Farrakhan added. “We must recognize that we are living under colonial status,” the Minister continued. “What is a ‘colony?’ It’s a separate condition where there is one group of people with similar language, culture, history controlled from the outside. The Black community is controlled from the outside,” he said.

Justice Department Investigating Eric Garner’s Death

It’s been more than two years since Eric Garner’s controversial police-choke-hold death on New York City’s Staten Island, but the federal investigation into the case has been moving at a snail’s pace. The Department of Justice has overhauled the Eric Garner investigative team, replacing the New York team of agents and lawyers looking into his 2014 death, the New York Times reports.The move, which the Times describes as a “highly unusual shake-up,” could put some steam into the longstalled case and possibly put the department back on track in seeking criminal charges.

Fundraiser To Replace Defaced Emmett Till Sign Reaches Goal

A fundraiser launched to replace a bullet-riddled memorial sign marking the location where Emmett Till’s tortured remains were found has reached its goal—and then some. Till, a teen from Chicago visiting family in LeFlore County, Mississippi, who was kidnapped and brutally killed on August 28, 1955, for allegedly whistling at a White woman. His murderers, J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant, were acquitted by an allWhite jury but later confessed to his murder in Money, Miss. The Emmett Till Interpretive Center by Monday morning had raised nearly $19,000 to repair the sign, more than the $15,000 goal, which would replace the sign and keep it safe from further destruction. More than 400 contributors gave funds.

Blacks Disenfranchised by Felonies

A new report by The Sentencing Project shows that six million Americans have been disenfranchised because of felony convictions, with huge consequences for Black America. In four states -- Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia -- one out of every four or five African Americans has lost the right to vote. “These are states with high rates of incarceration and, as is true in every state, the rate of incarceration of African Americans dwarfs that of whites, usually by about a five to one ratio,” said Project executive director Marc Mauer. “The combined effect of high rates of incarceration and the fact that many, if not most, of the people who have completed their sentences are still disenfranchised means that it is a lifetime ban.” Mauer said the U.S. stands alone among industrialized countries in its zeal to disenfranchise ex-felons. “Nothing we know of comes close to this.”-blackagendareport

As a result, the percentage of registered Black voters drops from 44.8 percent in 1986 to 4.0 percent four years later. Mississippi, South Carolina, Alabama, and Virginia follow Louisiana’s lead by enacting their own grandfather clauses. (“Grandfather” clauses were laws passed by Democratic legislatures allowing an individual to vote if his father or grandfather had been registered to vote prior to the passage of the 15th Amendment. Since voting in the South prior to the 15th Amendment was almost completely by Whites, this law ensured that poor and illiterate Whites, but not Blacks, could vote.) •1940: Only 3 percent of eligible African Americans in the South are registered to vote. The Centennial Gala on Friday, November 11th features keynote speaker the Reverend Dr. Otis Moss, Jr., one of the most influential preachers in America. A champion for social justice, having marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in Selma, AL, Dr. Moss led many campaigns against discrimination as a regional director with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) of which Dr. King was president. From 1975-2008, Rev. Dr. Moss pastored the Olivet Institutional Baptist Church of Cleveland, at one time the largest black church in the state of Ohio. The gala will be held at the Adams Mark Hotel, and tickets are $60.

On Saturday, November 12 at 6:00 PM, First Shiloh presents the “100 years – 100 voices” Centennial concert. The choir director is Maestro Edna Gayles Kee, life long member of First Shiloh and distinguished professor at Erie Community College, who will share the conductors’ podium with Melvin Bryant, Jr., a past Shiloh minister of music, now Elder of Worship at Church of the Great Commission, Camp Springs, MD. These two talented composers and musicians have designed a program that is a powerful collection of music from Negro Spirituals to contemporary gospel. There is no admission charge for the concert. Dr. Copeland is the cofounder and Pastor of the New Creation Christian

Fellowship in San Antonio, TX. She is also founder of Claudette Copeland Ministries, a national empowerment group for women. Author of several books including Coming Through Darkness: Cancer and One Woman’s Journey to Wholeness and Stories from Inner Space: Confessions of a Preacher Woman and Other Tales, Dr. Copeland is published in the African American Devotional Bible. THE SPIRIT OF NINA SIMONE

P

icture this. A sold out crowd fills Kleinhans Music Hall to hear Nina Simone, the incomparable “High Priestess of Soul.” It is not in 1964 when Nina, one of the most lyrical and conscientious singers in American musical history came to Buffalo to perform in concert at the Symphony Circle venue. It is February 24, 2017. Fifty-three years later. On that evening, Drea D’Nur, an amazingly talented young vocalist in her own right, will sit down at the piano on that same stage, and bring us, “The Spirit of Nina Simone”, an epic musical and visual homage to a true musical genius. This promises to be an unforgettable experience. Drea created this riveting production to honor Ms. Simone in a sophisticated, high-vibrational performance that encompasses various dimensions of Arts, including Music, Dance, Theatre, and Visuals. “I’ve had this idea…this vision… for two years,” Drea told The Challenger. “I kept seeing this billboard, ‘Kleinhans Music Hall’ Presents… ( The Spirit of Nina Simone). I decided this year to move forward.” When that decision was made, everything seemed to fall into place. The venue and date was secured (February 24 is just three days after Nina’s birthday) , a billboard in place, her team identified, tickets on sale, and a wealth of additional talent, available and on board. The recent release of movies and documentaries about Nina Simone’s life spurred her on; as well as Nina’s “lyrical indictment” of racism in America, which solidly connects her to the current African Americans’ struggle for human/civil rights across the country today. “I have to tell her story here in Buffalo,” said Drea, “Because what she talked about then is happening now…." It has been a journey of the soul for Drea as she spent countless hours researching

Why Now?Drea is careful to point out that this is Nina’s show- her spirit, her genius, her story. “I first heard Nina sing when I was in my 20’s and the song was Strange Fruit (an anti-lynching protest song ),” recalled Drea. “When I heard Nina's version I said, ‘who is this woman? ‘ I felt it in my soul….” “ God has blessed me to sing melodically but my strength is in making people feel something, and Nina definitely makes you feel. When I listen to Nina its soul stirring, and that is what I can relate to,” She can also relate to Nina’s fierce, uncompromising support of the civil rights movement. More than any other artist in that era, she used her art as a weapon against oppression. Drea was doing conscious music long before it was trendy. Her latest video for example, “Break Me Down,” is a powerful statement about a people’s resistance to the tyrannical epidemic of police killings of unarmed African Americans and pays particular homage to Eric Gardner, Mike Brown and Sandra Bland – all unarmed; all killed by police. “I can relate to Nina…I really connect with her as an artist,” commented Drea, adding

that no matter what happened in her life – good or bad, “she kept singing.” -“The Spirit of Nina Simone“This is turning into something way bigger than I had anticipated,” continued Drea. “I will be channeling her on stage…bringing her most famous and favorite images to life… “This is serious to me, I literally eat, sleep, and dream Nina all day…I want it to be in my soul.” Drea said that she is reading Nina’s book again "I Put A Spell on You" and she plans to recreate her look down to the jewelry she wore. “I want to stay as true to her spirit as I possibly can… she was filled with the spirit of our ancestors, such a graceful strength….(when she performed) it was like a powerful force took over her." “I sometimes ask myself why I was not born in that (civil rights) era,” she mused. “But I realized that if all of us who can "see" only existed then, there would be no one to fight and carry the torch into this era". Drea, known for her electrifying live performances, talked at length about things that matter, like unity and respect among Black people; pride and sharing; respect for our ancestors; knowledge of our true history and the importance of teaching our children love for self and one another. And about teaching Nina. Despite her young age she

Comedy Legend Paul Mooney An Interview With Meli’sa Morgan, One of R&B's Most Dynamic to Appear at The Groove Lounge Voices By Matt Bauer

P

aul Mooney is coming to Buffalo on Saturday November 12. He will be performing two shows at 7 and 9:30 p.m. at the Groove Lounge at 1210 Broadway. Mr. Mooney is a Legend when it comes to comedy. He has written for such greats as Richard Pryor, Tim Reid, Marsha Warfield, and Robin Williams. Mooney has also written for the shows “Saturday Night Live,” and “In Living Color.” Paul Mooney grew up in Oakland, California. His comedy career started with the Charles Gody Circus as the first African-American ringmaster. He became known professionally when he wrote for Richard Pryor’s Saturday Night Live appearance, Live On The Sunset Strip, Bicentennial Nigger, and Is It Something I Said albums, as well as Pryor’s film Jo Jo Dancer. Paul Mooney was also the head writer for the Richard Pryor show. He created the characters Homey the Clown, and the brothers Tom and Tom for the hit series, “In Living Color.” He co-starred with Damon Wayans and Jada PinkettSmith in the Spike Lee film Bamboozled. Paul Mooney’s debut album Race & Masterpiece continues to be a success among many circles. His later DVD’s included Analyzing White America, Know Your History, It’s the End of the World and his Show-time release, The Godfather of Comedy, Mr. Paul Mooney. Mooney has also been seen in multiple character roles on the famous Chappelle Show. “I always drop history” he explains “It’s knowledge. There’s always a message in my comedy and you may not get it that night, it’s like a time bomb. It’ll get you a week later. You’ll understand.” The Nov. 12th show will be hosted by Buffalo comedian, Darnell Davis and will also feature comedian Derrick Brooksfrom Virginia, and Mooney’s sons, “The Mooney Twins.” Mr. Mooney states that this will be his last performance in Buffalo. With classics like the Prince-penned “Do Me Baby,” “Do You Still Love Me,” “Fool’s Paradise” (which was sampled by Jay-Z and Mary J. Blige on the 1996 single “Can’t Knock The Hustle” ) and her legendary duet with Kashif “Love Changes,” Meli’sa Morgan has established herself as one of the most dynamic voices in R&B over her now threedecade and counting career. She’ll be performing all of those hits and more when she appears at the Tralf as part of Autumn Wave 3 on October 29. As the lead singer of the Patrick Adams-produced dance project Shades of Love (on the 1982 classic “Keep In Touch (Body To Body) and as a member of the group High Fashion as well as a background singer for Evelyn “Champagne” King, Melba Moore, and Whitney Houston among others, the Queensborn Morgan had established a name for herself in the music industry before signing to a management and production contract with Hush productions and releasing her debut Do Me Baby on Capitol Records in 1986. In a musical period oftremembered for futile crossover aspirations to the pop market, Meli’sa’s unadulterated and powerhouse vocals were definitely welcomed by fans of authentic R&B. “I think I started out listening to the greats,” explains Morgan

of her vocal style. “ I was a big fan of Chaka Khan and the big female funk singers during that time. I loved Tata Vega, I loved anyone that could take the rhythm and make it funky vocally. So that is how I developed my style.” The sultry “Do Me Baby” reached the top spot on the R&B chart. “I got to meet Prince who was very pleased with my version and that made me really, really happy,” recalls Morgan. A number of hits followed throughout the late 1980s, yet her duet with the late-Kashif, a cover of Mother’s Finest’s “Love Changes” remains a career highlight and a landmark of soulful balladry.

“ It was that me and Kashif had worked together so much before with him producing and having me sing background on all of the projects that he worked on,” explains Morgan of their chemistry which ranks among the divine musical unions of Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell and Donny Hathaway and Roberta Flack. Surprisingly, Kashif was going to perform the song solo. “I said you’ve got to have a female in there because that’s what people remember,” continues Meli’sa. “ They remember Joyce Kennedy singing the lead and so he gave me the tape and the rest is history. I’m so sad that he’s gone because I just worked with him in June, we did four sold out shows at the Catalinas and he was really trying to make a comeback as an artist and a singer.” A regime change at Capitol in the early 1990s resulted in her leaving the label and a thirteen year break from recording that ended with 2005’s I Remem-

ber. Having recently signed a new deal with Cleopatra Records, Meli’sa is planning on a new album in 2017 as well as a tour called “Sister’s Experience” which will also feature Miki Howard and Angela Winbush. “I think I’m just more confident and relaxed about who I am,” Meli’sa says of this juncture in her career. “When you first come out, there’s no matter what people say you’re a nervous wreck [laughs]. I guess you would say that at this point my style is well seasoned and developed. I can grow with it and play with it.” Regarding upcoming Autumn Wave 3 which also features Intuition, The Larry Salter Soul Orchestra and The Trinity Band, Morgan says, “The last time I played the Tralf, I played with Najee so this is going to be fun. I’m looking forward to working with some excellent musicians and a smoking band. I’m looking forward giving the audience a great show.”

Where are Blacks spending their $1 trillion buying power?

T

he well-documented rapid growth of Hispanic, Asian and other multicultural segments of the U.S. population has at times overshadowed the noticeable economic growth and influence of African-Americans. Within the past five years, the buying power of African-Americans topped $1 trillion. In its new report African-Americans: Demographic and Consumer Spending Trends, 10th Edition, market research firm Packaged Facts found that between 2010 and 2015 AfricanAmerican buying power grew from $995 billion to $1.3 trillion for cumulative growth of 27 percent. Looking ahead, Packaged Facts forecasts cumulative growth of 16 percent between 20152020.

The rise of affluent households has helped bolster AfricanAmerican buying power. Between 2005 and 2014 the number of African-American households with an income of $100,000 or more jumped 83 percent, from 1.1 million to around two million. Comparatively, the total number of American households in the $100,000+ income bracket grew only 53 percent. Likewise, the number of black households with incomes ranging between $75,000 and $100,000 increased by 25 percent. As the two-tier economy continues to reach into all demo graphic segments, it is likely that the buying power of affluent black households will continue to grow at a relatively rapid pace, finds Packaged Facts. For the U.S. economy overall, the trickledown effect of this swelling prosperity has seen consumer expenditures by the average African-American household grow faster than consumer spending by other households (26 percent vs. 23 percent). Dining out is one area where African-Americans are spending more of their money. Packaged Facts estimates that the amount black households spent in 2015 on food away from home was 14 percent higher than in 2012, while expenditures on food at home increased only 5 percent. Similarly, purchases on apparel, personal care products (especially fragrances), home furnishings, appliances (both major and minor), and home improvement/remodeling also boomed. African-American consumers played a major role in the rush to auto dealers' showrooms that occurred between 2012 and 2015. During this time period, spending by American consumers on automotive vehicles grew by $126 billion, or 36 percent. Higher-income African-Americans outspend the total population on "future-oriented" expenditures such as life, endowment, annuity, and other personal insurance, as well as contributions to pensions and Social Security. Packaged Facts also found that higher-income black consumers present a major opportunity for financial firms. Over the past decade, the percent of higher-income African-American households holding any form of financial investment has trended upward from 36 percent to 44 percent. Young Folks Steppin’ Up! Michigan Street, On Sacred Ground

I

hate labels but I have become more accustomed to a few as I’ve earned some perks because of my age. I am a “Baby Boomer.” Depending on the data you use, we “Boomers” are identified as those individuals between the ages of 51 and 69. Many of us have retired or are close to retiring and we are rapidly being replaced in the workforce by the “Millennials” (ages Karima 18 to 34) and “Generation X” (ages 35-50). As we “Boomers” are graying, more and AMIN more younger people are stepping up to take the reins of government and community leadership. Some say by 2030, the “Millennials will outnumber the “Boomers” by 22 million. The next meeting of Prisoners Are People Too, Inc. will afford us an opportunity to hear from some young people in the community who are working diligently to help other young people avoid the “left turn” that could lead to unwanted involvement with the criminal justice system. What they have to say and what they are doing is beneficial for all, and not just for their peers. Mercedes Wright and Eric Rose are siblings who share the desire to see a brighter future for all of us. In the summer of 2014 they acted on this desire by creating “Young Visionaries.” Starting initially as party promoters, they now mentor children left behind after loved ones have been lost to homicide. Duncan Kirkwood is the Chairperson of the “Black Lives Matter” affiliate in Buffalo. He credits Katrinna Martin-Bordeaux, activist and founder of Young Black Democrats of Western NY, for guiding and supporting him in the local work of a national movement that is designed to increase community understanding. Dave Harder is a man seeking to share his vision of a community where cooperative learning is the norm. He is working to create an environment where we are all stakeholders, learning, building, and growing together. His idea of “knowledge fire” is bolstered by the fact that every individual brings value to the world. Dayatra Hassan is the young woman who serves as coordinator of the Food for Thought Teen Program. This FREE program at the Gloria J. Parks Community Center seeks to build resiliency and self-esteem through a curriculum that is actually shaped by the teens themselves. This should be an interesting meeting. Come out and sit with us in the circle. Learn, discuss, and bring a friend. Our guest speakers this month are young people who understand the power of positive and productive work. Let’s listen to them and network with them to support their community efforts. n sacred grounds there is love, respect and appreciation of life. Truth, freedom, justice, compassion and humility, respected values of humanity are revealed. African Americans, like people throughout the world, have sacred places of life and consciousness meaningful to their culture. These sites of important historical and spiritual value serve us now and into the future as evidence of the tremendous human capacity to act for the greater good, taking unselfish, inspired and courageous actions. Whether physical sites, historical events, or meditations of the heart and soul, what we consider sacred causes us to remember and appreciate the power of the human mind and spirit to take action and overcome inhumane, unjust and destructive behavior of an oppressive culture. Buffalo has its places of sacred meaning and remembrances. The Michigan Street Baptist Church, the pride of Buffalo’s Black community in 1842, is a sacred place of African American history and heritage. It is known to some, yet unknown by many, as generations pass and the courageous and compassionate stories of African American struggles for freedom, justice, peace and wellbeing remain either untold, incomplete or distorted. Built in 1848, by free Blacks led by Rev. Mr. Sharpe, a mason, The Michigan St. Baptist Church congregation demonstrated the courage and organizational ability to resist northern oppression, southern slave catchers, and provide safe haven for those escaping slavery. Frederick Douglas, William Wells Brown and Martin Delaney were speakers at the church well known to the congregation. Throughout the pre-civil war effort, the congregation often took public stands against slavery, publishing resolutions and position papers opposed to slavery and the fugitive slave act which they actively defied in protection of southern Blacks entering the city. The church from its inception was a staunch defender of the dignity and rights of African Americans, a beacon of light to Black folks throughout the northeast.

Often a host for regional meetings such as the national Convention of Colored Citizens in 1842, the tradition of human rights and civil rights advocacy continued under the leadership of Rev. J. Edward Nash, appointed minister in the 1890’s. Himself a great intellect, Rev. Nash found alliance with other great minds such as W.E. B. Dubois, Ida B. Wells, Mary Terrell and Adam Clayton Powell Sr. By the early 1900’s the Michigan Street Baptist Church congregation had established its exemplary character as a leadership organization for human rights. On this The Old Michigan Street Baptist Church. basis, some of the leading African Americans advocates of justice and equality for Blacks gathered in Buffalo and met in Fort Erie to launch the Niagara Movement, precursor to the NAACP. On sacred grounds, by eternal values, we empower ourselves, to wage todays struggle against oppression, and construct the framework for our children’s enlightenment and greater quality of life for future generations. Our actions today will determine the respect that future generations will have of the legacy of Buffalo’s current generation of leaders. We are challenged today as Black Buffalonians were in the 1800’s, to rise up as people of dignity and integrity worthy our ancestor’s dreams and prayers of liberation and justice.

Dear Editor: Recently the Republican Presidential candidate, Donald J. Trump, was caught on tape boasting about groping and kissing women without their consent. Trump surrogates, including Buffalo School Board member Carl P. Paladino have rushed to defend Mr. Trump. They have tried to excuse or dismiss his actions as mere locker room banter – a claim that even athletes decry and find unbelievable. Further Mr. Paladino stated that Mr. Trump did “something that all men do, at least normal ones”, thus trying to normalize unacceptable behavior.

We Need a Wrongful Conviction Unit in Erie County

here is no doubt that our criminal justice system needs to be reformed. The Innocence Project is well-known for the work that it does, working to exonerate the wrongfully convicted through DNA testing, and working in other ways to reform the criminal justice system to prevent future injustices. According to a New York Times article, published in February of this year, it was reported that a record number of false convictions were overturned in 2015. “There were 149 people last year who were either declared innocent or otherwise cleared of the consequences of their convictions or guilty pleas. Many had served some lengthy prison time—the average exoneree had served nearly 15 years—for crimes they did not commit.” In New York State, there is only one wrongful conviction unit. In the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, this unit is sometimes referred to as a “conviction review unit” or “conviction integrity unit.” It only works in New York County. Erie County has nothing comparable. Some of you may recall my son, Terrol Massey, who was convicted of murder in a murder-for-hire scheme in 2005. My son was 16 years old. His co-defendants were all white adults except one, a 14-year old white boy who was murdered on the street, a few years later. after a house party. During the trial, Ter-

rol, a special education student, was victimized by ineffective assistance of counsel and further judged to be the master-mind behind the crime. His sentence, 20 years-to-life, was greater than that of any of his adult co-defendants. A wrongful conviction unit might have worked to reduce his sentence or might have simply proclaimed his innocence. Recently, I invited the public to join me in welcoming the National Association for Equal Justice in America (NAEJA) to Buffalo. Attendees from Buffalo, Niagara Falls, and Rochester shared their views regarding the need for the establishment of a wrongful conviction unit in Erie County. As the Chairperson of the State of New York Community of NAEJA, I have taken the lead in inviting NAEJA’s national representatives to return to Buffalo on Saturday, October 29. The Land Bank Issue:

“Show Us The Money! We Will Not Be Denied A Seat At This Table” Dear Editor, On Friday, October 14, 2016, I attended an emergency community meeting at C.R.U.C.I.A.L., located at 230 Moselle St.. The meeting was organized by Taniqua Simmons, a well-known local community activist that I have a lot of respect for. Over 100 concerned city residents attended this meeting to address the issue that our community was being sold from under us through a city land bank that had been approved by the NYS Assembly and signed into law by the Governor. Several elected officials were present: District Councilman Wingo, Erie County Legislator Betty Jean Grant and Council Member Barbara Miller Williams. Most importantly Mayor Brown attended with his employee Keith Lucas, Director of Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency since 2011. Also present was John Washington, community organizer for PUSH and Indian Walton representing the Fruit Belt community which is organizing its own land bank with the help of John Washington. I reference all these individuals because they are all key players and stakeholders in the future of the inner city communities of Buffalo, but what I have to say regarding this meeting is addressed to my beloved community residents. I am the elected committee-person for Masten 36. In this position which I do not take lightly, I am required to provide the residents with the information and tools when possible that will allow them be productive participants in their community. So, I have researched the land bank issue and I want to share that information, because once again we are late at the table. Not because we don’t care, but because those we elect to office never clearly and completely explain issues and circumstances that may have a serious impact on our lives. I want to explain how we got to a place where an information session became a beat down, disorderly, and a shameful display for residents and those elected to serve us. WHAT IS A LAND BANK? Land Banks are not financial institutions. They are public or community owned entities created for a single purpose: to acquire, manage, maintain, and repurpose vacant, abandoned, and foreclosed properties. They deal with the worst abandoned houses, forgotten buildings, and empty lots. How Did We Get to This Point? On July 9, 2011 Governor Cuomo signed Land Bank legislation. Why? So that municipalities

could create Land Banks to convert vacant properties into uses that support community revitalization. Eight counties formed land banks. Our bank is called Buffalo Erie Niagara Land Improvement Corporation. The NY Land Bank Act defines how the Land Bank should operate: 1.Obtain property at low or no cost through tax foreclosure. 2.The right of first refusal to purchase properties being sold after tax foreclosure. 3.Hold land tax free 4.Clear title and/or forgive back taxes 5.Lease properties for temporary use 6.Negotiate sales based not only on the highest bidder but on the outcome that most closely aligns with community needs. Note: Based on how they should operate we don’t have to push or yell we have a legal right to form a Community Advisory Council and be at the table. What Happened in 2013? In the summer of 2013 NYS Attorney General Eric Schneiderman’s Land Bank Community Revitalization Initiative competitively made available to Land Banks 33 million dollars over two rounds. The funds were part of the first National Mortgage Settlement awarded to NYS. In September 2013 the eight NYS Land Banks split 13 million dollars and Buffalo was one of the eight that received 1.625 million dollars. In the second round 20 million dollars was split by the original 8 and a newly formed Albany county Land Bank corporation. They each received 2.222 million Dollars. So we need to ask where is that 2.847 million dollars. Let’s Look at Some More Recent Activity: There was a grand announcement June 23, 2016. in Albany, NY. The Headlines read, Governor Cuomo Signs Sweeping Legislation to Combat the Blight of Vacant Abandoned Properties. It is to your benefit to read Bill #36 dated 06/13/16 sign by the Senate and the Assembly, because the was to take effect immediately. In brief page 2 lines 3-4…there is a need to establish a program to assist homeowners…line 9-11…who may lose their homes through foreclosure, or abandoned their homes due to economic hardship and may benefit from assistance. So now you know my beloved community and people that municipalities can create Land Banks and so can we, to convert vacant properties into uses that support community revitalization and Land Banks to identify and purchase properties from federal distressed pools. Mayor Brown spoke the truth, now we must make sure the city walks the walk. It our turn now! -Akua Kamau

Community Conversation: The First Step

he Western New York Concerned Clergy Coalition is inviting all citizens to a special community conversation on developing a Strategic Plan for the African-American Community. The historic meeting will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday October 27th at Mount Olive Baptist Church 701 E. Delavan Avenue in the city of Buffalo Specifically we are calling for the development of a plan for the revitalization of the AfricanAmerican community on eastside of Buffalo that will include the zip codes of 14209, 14215, 14211, 14208, 14214, and 14204. This plan will not be developer driven but resident driven. The goals will not just profit for a few, but the dramatic reduction of poverty in our community. For the last 2 years the Concerned Clergy of WNY has been working tirelessly to address the racial disparities in education, law enforcement, health and economic development. As you know this region has been in the midst of economic renaissance. However Pastor George the African-American community is still NICHOLAS struggling with overwhelming poverty. According to an October 1, 2016 article in the Buffalo News (http://buffalonews.com/2016/10/01/half-buffalo-children-livepoverty-new-census-figures-show/ ) Sadly the recent census data indicates things are actually worse for those who live in the African-American community: “The poverty rate for blacks, meanwhile, rose to 41 percent, an increase from 36 percent the prior year.” We know that you agree this is completely unacceptable especially due to the fact that over $12 billion has been invested in this regional renaissance. The economic resurgence for the wealthy required intense planning to fulfill the vision of those with power. The African-American community was neglected because our economic prosperity was not a priority for those who controlled the plan. October 27 can be the start of developing a plan that will address the needs of our people. The focus of the plan will be: •Empower the people to control the destiny of the redevelopment of their neighborhoods •Prevent gentrification •Reduce the level of poverty in the community •Increase the number of contracts awarded to African-American businesses •Increase the number of African-Americans working on major projects •Reduce overall unemployment in the African-American community •Create partnerships between African-American businesses and general contractors on major projects. This would increase capacity for the African-American businesses to obtain business opportunities. •Development of community values in the capturing of the economics of the redevelopment of the African-American community. This would include the creation of a Community Benefits Agreement that will be the criteria for development in the designated area. This CBA would have clear requirements for the number of residents from the designated area that would access to the employment opportunities created through development. In addition the CBA would include a process to create business opportunities for locally owned African-American businesses. It is our intention to develop a broad based coalition of people to help shape the future of our community. In order for this to work we need to come together across every perceived barrier of unity. uffalo’s own “Stitch Doctor” aka Anthony (Tony ) Dennis will be showcasing his upcoming fall collection and unique designs at the 4th annual “ Everywhere He Goes He Sews” tour. First event will take place on October 27 3-5pm at the Delavan Grider Community Center,877 E. Delavan. The second event will take place on October 29 from noon to -5pm at “The Popin” 218 Grant street. Both events are free and open to the public. Growing up in Buffalo, tony has always been known for his own sense of fashion and artistic way of being eclectic and unique. As a little boy, Tony always wanted to grow up to be a designer and finally became one. His big break came in 92’ with his first clothing brand NO NAMES DESIGNS where he sold his artwork on t-shirts and had the nation wearing the tees putting a local artist from Buffalo with local and national celebrities wearing NO NAMES. In 96’ he moved from Buffalo to Atlanta to try a bigger market and opened a t-shirt shop in downtown Atlanta. He developed a new passion for designing, custom clothing and sample making. With the new passion his clientele labeled him “The Stitch Doctor”. Designing for top name clothing brands, video and movie sets and doing alterations for published magazines. His store STITCHES, has become a popular name in and around the Atlanta area where he currently resides. Dolphins run all over Bills to end four game win streak 28-25

T

he Bills started the game with LeSean McCoy as running back after sitting out practice for most of the week.The Bills needed to jump on Dolphins early with a power running attack. The Dolphins secondary are missing key players and the Bills may expose their secondary later in the game. The Bills defensive line was missing - Marcel Dareus in the middle finally got exposed and was torched by Miami Dolphins running back Jay Ajayi. The Dolphin’s running back was very humble after making history against the Bills by running for 200 yards in consecutive games. He joins a short list of running backs O.J. Simpson, ’73,’76, Earl Campbell ’80, Rickey Williams ‘2002, and Jay Ajayi’ 2016. You must take notice that O.J. Simpson is the only running back to achieve this accomplishment twice and gives further prove that O.J. was the greatest player to ever wear a Buffalo Bills George uniform. Ajayi said, “I’m taking it week by week and our offensive line wants RADNEY me to get a 1,000 yards for the season. We now have all our guys healthy and we wanted to set a tone and hit them in the mouth, the Bills are a team that is doing well and I think we achieved our goals for today’s game,” “Some plays were gap schemes or outside plays and key is reading the leverage of our blocking and making guys miss.” He did that today by making a wide variety of Bills defenders look simple and foolish on some plays. The crack back block by Dolphins wide receiver Jarvis Landry was a clean hit and Bills safety Aaron Williams should have seen him coming while pursuing the running back Jay Ajayi. The Dolphins have been running that type of power sweep all season with the wide receiver turning to the inside and hitting a linebacker or safety. Bills defense was out coached by Dolphins Adam Gase and crew. The Bills were not successful in making any adjustments to counter a strong running attack by the Dolphins. The Dolphins seemed to want to win more than Bills on this day. The coaching blunder of the day was allowing injured Bills running back LeSean McCoy to play and not rest him for second half of the season. We have recently seen what a healthy LeSean McCoy looks like, so WHY play him when you can see his hamstring is not right. It’s another stupid mistake by Bills Head Coach Rex Ryan. He continues to show you really how ignorant and short sighted he is by not looking at the entire season. (Oh Yeah!!! I keep forgetting he introduce his friend Donald Trump in Buffalo during his campaign stop) You could have rested McCoy through the bye week and bring him back a healthy and well rested player. Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor must rise to the occasion and make a few more plays while trailing in games. He blew a tremendous opportunity against the Dolphins by not passing the ball to Reggie Bush, who was open for most of second half. The Bills actually had the mis-matches in the second half with Bush working out of a slot receiver position. The moving pocket should have been called upon because Ndamukong Suh was whipping Bills center Eric Woods behind all day long. If you notice, the pressure on Tyrod came from up the middle and our boy Mario Williams did not wake up until late in the game with some impressive sacks. Dolphin’s secondary is terrible and Tyrod should have carved them up with plenty of passes to Reggie Bush along with Justin Hunter and deep balls to Marquise Goodwin. Goodwin is not good on any other route but the deep ball, Bills offensive line is not good enough from the traditional pocket and needs to be moving until SeanTrel Henderson returns at right tackle position. Jordan Mills had a terrible game and was beaten most of the time as well as Eric Wood. The Bills must draft a center in the Spring or replace him with Patrick Lewis who is the practice squad. The level of play coming out of the center position is getting worse and worse. The Bills missed out on a golden opportunity to give themselves a little more of a cushion within the division and the AFC. The Bills face New England Patriots on Sunday at New Era Stadium. Tyrod must start using Reggie Bush more as a receiver and go over the top to Marquise Goodwin. The Patriots are very beatable, just look at highlights of their game against Steelers. Prediction:THe Bills will win this hard fought action packed match up 33-30. Brady will throw for over 300 yards in defeat. The Bills could be the only team to defeat Patriots in 2016 as we approach the half point of the season.
