Buffalo Urban League 2016 Gala Awardees Announced

he Buffalo Urban League, Inc. will celebrate its 2016 Gala on Saturday, November 19, at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. Since 1927, the Buffalo Urban League has served the Buffalo Niagara community by empowering disadvantaged individuals and families through securing economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights. “This is our largest friend and fundraiser of the year, and we pause each year to acknowledge the important community contributions and professional achievements of individuals and organizations that have had a lasting positive impact on our community,” said Mrs. Brenda W. McDuffie, President & CEO of the Buffalo Urban League. This year, Mary Ann Coulson, a highly regarded community volunteer and Senior Vice President of Morgan Stanley, will receive the Buffalo Urban League’s highest individual honor – the William L. Evans & Whitney M. Young, Jr. Humanitarian Award. Family Life Awards are being presented to two families: Mr. Charley & Mrs. Janice Ferguson and Mr. Alphonso & Mrs. Marcia O’Neill-White. The African-American Cultural Center and Harmac Medical Products are this year’s Community Service Award recipients; and Sydney Carpenter and Nathaniel D. Queen Charlotte, Britain’s First Black Queen After the overwhelming “hate Meghan Markle” reaction to the rumored Black girlfriend of Prince Harry, following British media’s reports of their love affair, NewsOne pointed out the African ancestry of Britain’s royal family––directly embodied by Queen Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, Britain’s first Black Queen. Here are a few things you may or may not know about Queen Sophia Charlotte: 1. Queen Charlotte, the eighth child of Duke Charles Louis Frederick and Elizabeth Albertine, was born on May 19, 1744, according to PBS Frontline. She descended from Margarita de Castro y Sousa, a Black branch of the Portuguese Royal House, the report says. Queen Charlotte eventually married King George III and bore 15 children, 13 of whom survived, AfricanAmerican Registry writes. She is the great, great, great-grandmother to Queen Elizabeth II. 2. Artists who depicted the Queen were told to downplay her African features for fear of revealing the monarch’s history of intermixing and inbreeding,

Donald J. Trump has been elected 45th President of the United States
THE DONALD “TRUMPS” THE SYSTEM Outcome of the 2016 Election should serve as a Wake Up Call for Black America. -An Election ReflectionThe nation’s decision to accept the divisive, racist rhetoric of Donald Trump’s campaign should come as no surprise to Black Americans. The hateful fringe element that the 45th President-elect so successfully energized, is unfortunately as “American as apple pie.” And even though Mr. Trump sounded conciliatory - almost humble - during his brief acceptance speech Tuesday morning, calling for unity and pledging to be president for every citizen in America, we can’t allow ourselves to be “hoodwinked or bamboozled.” For Black Americans this election should serve as a wake up call. A reminder that the struggle is far from over. A “get woke” alert. A time for serious reflection and positive, progressive, action; a time to come together and build and heal ourselves and our communities for the sake of the next generation. It is definitely no time to be afraid. “The majority of Black people are figuratively sleep; as in unconscious” writes Kendrik Payne in the online blog, Melanoid Nation “ Unconscious to the oppression of systematic White supremacy. This unconsciousness (and White supremacy, for that matter) is the reason that Blacks own only one half of one percent of all the wealth in America. A fact that has remained since…1863. In fact there are more Black people incarcerated, on probation, and on parole today than there were slaves in…1863. “We (Black people) love to pretend that we live in a post-racial America in-between televised shootings of unarmed Black males. This is…obviously not the case. ..This election overall, should just be the wake-up call for all sleepy Negros with individual power to use it, while encouraging those without individual power, to come together collectively.” Writes blackagendareport columnist Margaret Kimberley, “The demands that began under Obama… must continue.” During the election campaign, she said, Clinton … may have brought the mothers of police murder victims on to the stage “but she has said nothing about ending the death toll,” adding that millions of Americans struggle financially and are displaced by gentrification or fear the police or want to keep their public schools open. “After the election is over, she continued, “ that is the moment when the fight must begin in earnest.. .. Frederick Douglass’ advice to ‘Agitate, agitate, agitate,’ must still be followed.”-a.b.
107-Year-Old Daughter of a Slave Casts Her Vote for Clinton Donella Wilson, at 107 years old, has never missed a local or national election since she cast her first vote in the 1940s. Wilson was born in 1909 and made a commitment to vote as long as she was able to. Wilson was born in 1909 in South Carolina to parents who were former slaves, and made a commitment to vote as long as she was able to. On Tuesday cast her vote one more time for Hillary Clinton. “She speaks for the masses,” she told WISTV.com “Voting is more important to me than life.” “I never thought I would live to see a day like this,” she said.“I’m over 100 years old!” Wilson has had to struggle some recently to retain her right to vote. She had to secure a new ID and registration card, but was ready and prepared for her opportunity to say something as she headed to the polls, not just to back up her beliefs, but to remember those who came before who fought for the right she currently has. “We couldn’t spell vote,” Wilson told the news station. “We didn’t know what the word meant other than we had an opportunity to say something and cast a vote, praying as we go along, that the vote could count to help us as a Negro race.” Wilson said she remembers President Barack Obama’s historic election, expressing how “proud and thankful” she was to witness it. And on Tuesday, she hoped to witness history once again, by casting her vote for Mrs. Clinton. “I’m looking for her to be our first female president,” she said. “I think it’s an honor, a precious gift from God.”

Dr. Hicks On A Mission to Impact Racial Disparities in Rising Death Rates from Oral Cancers
E
rie County has a significantly higher mortality rate compared to New York state and the United States, according to Centers for Disease Control and National Institutes of Health statistics. Most shocking, however, is the fact that the mortality rate for AfricanAmericans in Erie County is 1.7 times higher than that of whites in New York state, 1.6 times higher than whites in the United States and 1.3 times higher than whites in Erie County. Interestingly, the disparity is consistent when compared to other African-Americans. African-Americans in Erie County have a 1.6 higher mortality rate than AfricanAmericans in New York state and 1.3 times higher than African-Americans in the United States. Dr. Wesley L. Hicks Jr. has worked for years through his clinical practice to improve clinical outcomes in head and neck cancers (mouth, throat, voice box, thyroid, salivary gland) and mortality in Western New York. Hicks, chair of the Roswell Park Cancer Institute Department of Head & Neck/Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, has focused his efforts on Erie County in the urban and rural communities he serves. Hicks has made reversing this trend his mission and that of his department. His passion stems from working with

his father, Dr. Wesley Hicks Sr., at his dental office at 556 Michigan Ave., just blocks from Roswell Park Cancer Institute. There, he was challenged at a young age to make a difference in the health care of the Buffalo community. He realized that is a not an easy task and takes a unique team of physicians, researchers and staff working in a collective manner to make any headway. “In order to begin to address the serious problem with oral cavity and pharynx cancers in Erie County and to have a prayer of impacting the aforementioned racial disparities, we must develop a comprehensive strategy that brings head and neck, plastic and dental surgery on the delivery side together with the insurance carriers on the payer side and members of the community on the patient side,” Hicks said. Hicks took over leadership of the department in 2010 and rebuilt it by recruiting top talent
from across the United States to ensure that Roswell Park patients continue to receive top-notch cancer care. On Oct. 18, 2014, the department hosted the first Partners in Practice Symposium Series on Oral Cancer Early Detection, Management and Rehabilitation. At this event, experts from Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, Meharry Medical College, University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine and Roswell Park Cancer Institute came together to discuss the state of oral cancer care and research in the United States and the Erie County area. This year’s symposium will be held at Johns Hopkins Medical Center and returns to Buffalo in 2018. Hicks began to develop an oral cancer strategy, and in 2015, the department received research funding from the National Cancer Institute for the first time to develop a comprehensive multi-institutional oral cancer project.

Start-Studded Cast of Local Entertainers to Perform at All White Memorial Concert for Chauncey “Mr. R&B” Northington Last November, one day before the Thanksgiving Holiday, Buffalo lost one of its most promising vocal talents, Chauncey ”MR. R & B” Northington, in a tragic automobile accident, leaving many in this community stunned and saddened. Next Saturday, on November 19, Chauncey’s parents Alvin and Diane Northington, in conjunction with PDT, will present an All White Memorial Concert at the Tralf. in his memory. Hosted by sax great Will Holton, musical guests will include Ms. Erinn, Ms. Nikki Hicks, C.S. Glover BBKS, Old School B-Boys, Teddy “Sonny Boy” Turpin, Kenny Woo, Mr. Anthony Anderson, Mr. Joey Diggs & Poet Ms. Margo B., Band: Carl “Flute” Johnson, Toney Rhodes, Jerry Livingston and Brandon Sherman Josey. DJ Corey Entertainment will provide the music. Persons attending are asked to wear white, although it’s not mandatory. White, pointed out his mom Diane, was Chauncey’s favorite color. He grew up on Johnson St. with his mother Diane, father Alvin and baby sister Shavone. He attended #39 grammar school, then went on to Bennett High School. “Chauncey was sweet, smart, talented and kind to everyone he “Mr. R&B” met. He was every girl's first model of a gentlemen; always giving respectful and thoughtful compliments to the young ladies. He was the model of a perfect brother and friend: caring, understanding, compassionate, and appropriately protective. “Growing up in the church under the direction of his grandfather, Pearlie Northington (The Fantastic Northington Singers) and his father Alvin (affectionately known as Abby), he was an amazing singer, blessed with golden pipes and the gift of song. Everyone knew he'd make something of himself in music. “Chauncey was offered his first record contract in New York City in 1995 as a part of the R&B group "True Indeed" with members Teddy Turpin, Terrell Carter, Davon Dinkins, LaMont J., & Grammy Award winning producer Stevie J. He was dubbed "Baby Boy" back then. True Indeed opened up for Bobby Brown's Humpin’ Around Tour, worked with Cherelle, and was given the chance to write for Dave Hollister, Tevin Campbell, Deborah Cox, Simply Red, and sing background vocals for these artists as well. “Chauncey went overseas touring, as a result of working with local producer "Juice" in early 2001, singing in Oman every night for about three months from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.! He has graced the stages of Club Etcetera, The Metropolitan, Ujima, The Groove Lounge, The Tralf and countless others in Buffalo, NY, New York City and Los Angeles. “Artistic, family oriented, God-fearing and a perfectionist are just some of the words used to describe ‘Mr. R&B’ by his family and close friends. Remembering African American Veterans Eleven panel exhibit listing the names of area Veterans will be housed at the Frank E. Merriweather, Jr. Library, The courageous spirit of these Veterans will now have lasting recognition. The unveiling of a special exhibit honoring deceased African American Veterans of Western New York took place Tuesday, November 1 in the Auditorium of the Frank E. Merriweather, Jr. Library. Harry Bradshaw Matthews, Founding President of the United States Colored Troops Institute for Local History and Family Research at Hartwick College, was the Keynote speaker at the launching of this historic event, which is opening a new chapter of this community’s military history. As a grandson of the formerly enslaved African, Richard Parler, Jr., of Denmark. SC, Matthews has devoted much of his research to placing African American ancestors within the historical context of United States history. -Filing a VoidThe exhibit at the Merriweather Library was created to fill a void present in local history. It was created in partnership by The Links, Incorporated – Erie County (NY) Chapter, VA Western New York Healthcare System- Minority Veterans Program Committee, Remembering Our Veterans (ROV) interest group and McKinley Vocational High School. The eleven panel exhibit listing the names of Veterans collected over the past three years from family members, friends, faith based and community organizations will be housed at the Frank E. Merriweather, Jr. branch of the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, designated curator. The courageous spirit of these Veterans will now have lasting recognition. The names represent men and women who have served in all five branches of the military (Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Coast Guard) and participated in every United States military conflict whether they enlisted voluntarily or were drafted. They represent those who may have endured disparity and social injustice, as well as those who were able to advance through their military careers. In addition to Veterans’ names, the exhibit also highlights some historic moments. The co-chairpersons of this event, Fern E. Beavers and Madeline O. Scott provided the driving force for this project that will provide opportunity for the community to recognize and honor those who have served in a unique and lasting way. It is hoped that the exhibit will serve as an educational resource, inspiring those who see it to create additional history projects, encourage educators, students and others, to add to the memory of these local Veterans. “This is a historic day for Buffalo and Western New York and the partners involved,” said Janet E. Barnes, Chapter President. “The Links Incorporated – Erie County (NY) chapter, is proud to partner with so many groups, including the youth at McKinley High school, to recognize deceased African American Veterans and their contributions to this Nation.”

Pardoning Political Prisoners In The United States Dear Editor: During his presidency Barack Obama has pardon some of the following; Wall Street bankers and Drug dealers. During this same period, he has yet to pardon any of the large number of political prisoners, Black, White or Native American in Federal prisons all over this country. This is the same president who received the Nobel Peace prize after coming into office. During his period in office he has continued the wars started by the Bushes before him. He has enlarged the global scope of Drones and their use all over the world. He has deported more people than any other president before him. He has allowed, whistle blowers, like Chelsea Manning, Julian Assange and most famously Edward Snowden, to be imprisoned or exiled to silence them. He has covertly allowed more spying on not only US citizen but so-called Allies as well. Other than Obama care, for too many people of color, things have not vastly improved.

During both of his administrations, he’s had to fight an openly racist Senate and Congress tooth and nail to even get a few positive things accomplished. Now in the last months of his term he has a chance to make a lasting long term effect, in regards to the freeing of some of the world’s longest held political prisoners in this country. The question is why hasn’t he even remotely addressed this long standing issue? While he has spoken about human rights all over the world, it appears he’s gone deaf, dumb and blind to our political prisoners; examples, Leonard Peltier, Mumia Abu Jamal, Assata, Shakur, David Gilbert, Mutulu Shakur, Russell Maroon Shoats, Jalil Muntaqim, Jamil Abdullah Al-Amin[Formally known as H. Rap Brown], Sundiata Acoli, Veronza Bowers, Oscar Lopez Rivera, Avelino Gonzalez Claudio, Atty Lynne Stewart, The MOVE 8, Sekou Odinga, to name a few. At this late hour with the stroke of a pen, he could make history by as Spike Lee eloquently put it,”DO THE RIGHT THING”. For too long Obama has been a cautious figure, who appears to be trying to walk a tightrope between the two parties. Well its check out time and he can do what we know he should have done a long time ago, address this issue NOW. If he needs examples, Bill Clinton pardoned some Puerto Rican political prisoners, who were from NY, so his wife Hillary could win the election there. Even John Hinckley, the clown who almost killed, President Reagan has been released from the mental hospital St. Elizabeth’s in D.C. Under the Bush administration’s, criminals Like Oliver North, who was responsible for trafficking and bring large shipments of Cocaine into the country for the Iran Contra wars, was pardoned without even going to prison. To those who say, so how can we get him to even consider the idea, I say just like the stupid ICE BUCKET challenges that went viral, we must do the same. Also make sure that everyone we know posts this letter or better still write your own and post it. Make short videos and post them challenging, Obama to ...FREE’M ALL! Of course I expect to see a lot of naysayers, who will find any excuse to do nothing while claiming to support our FREEDOM FIGHTERS. As my mother use to say, “either get busy or get gone.” I’m especially aiming this message at the younger generation of activists, BLACK LIVES MATTER and others who are now continuing the struggle, which the political prisoners started. For too long only a very small group of Black folks and our White, Asian allies have been carrying the burden for these changes. Sadly, too many Black folks my age, either never cared or only pay lip service to the idea of freeing political prisoners. If there ever was a good time for this to happen it is now. Enough talk about racial harmony, its SHOW AND TELL time. As someone who spent time in Federal prisons all across this country for, what now would now be called terrorist activities; theft of military weapons and attempting to burn down the Walter Reed arsenal in Washington D.C. , I know close up and personal what life for those who dare fight against this facist nation means.
