Premiere of Critically Acclaimed James Baldwin Film at the Little Theatre Kicks off RABJ Black Cinema Series February 10

he Little Theatre is proud to announce The Black Cinema Series, presented in partnership with the Rochester Association of Black Journalists (RABJ). The series celebrates both documentary and narrative expressions in black cinema with a curated film choice every month. To complement each film, The Little will host discussions led by RABJ members, local experts, community leaders, and filmmakers after each series screening. The series will begin during Black History Month with the critically acclaimed I Am Not Your Negro. The debut screening will be 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb 10, with a panel discussion after the film. t was an exciting opening night at Super Bowl LI in Houston, TX. The Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots players both seemed relaxed and ready for Media Day. You could feel the excitement in the air and fans being in the building added to the event, and gave it a lot more energy. I spoke with Atlanta Falcons Linebacker Coach Brian Cox ( yes the former Miami Dolphins player who gave Bills fans a double barrel salute back in the day). “Patriots are good because they do not beat themselves and everyone know their assignments,” said Cox. “You must know their playbook inside out or you will not be with the team for long.” GEORGE Atlanta Falcons rookie inside linebacker RADNEY De Vondre Campbell a former basketball player, has turned himself into a pretty good football player. “ It’s hard to get on the field as a rookie but to start most of the season and now Super Bowl is a dream come true.,” De Vonte said,” I have been gaining confidence all season and with the help of my fellow teammates the speed of game has slowed down. It’s a lot of preparation with film work and meetings. I did not think I would get drafted, but I did and owe a lot to Falcons organization for having so much confidence in me. I’m giving it my all to be the best player possible.” The Falcons will start four rookies on defense which is almost unheard of from a Super Bowl team. They have 21 undrafted free agents on the active roster, which means their General Manager and scouting department did an outstanding job of player evaluations. So, Yes Buffalo Bills fan, there is hope in General Manager Doug Whaley and his scouting department to find diamonds in the rough just like Atlanta. He’s done it before and now must do it again! Super Bowl LI will be a very entertaining game with both teams putting points on the board. I think in the end a young Atlanta Falcons team will make enough mistakes for a steady and resilient New England Patriot team to win 38-28. Brady will throw for at least four touchdowns to put the final stamp on his personal MVP season.

his Thursday February 2 at 7pm, Michaela Angela Davis will speak at the SUNY Buffalo State College Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration at the Burchfield Penny Art Center. As an image activist, writer, conversationalist, editorial director, feminist and community servant, Michaela cares about culture, style , community, identity and positive progress. She strongly believes this is the time for a critical community conversation about who we are and where we go from here. “We need to talk about radical strategies to transform our lives,” says Ms. Davis. “Martin Luther King was a radical, a revolutionary and visionary. I plan to tap that energy because our young people should be aware that we support them and inspire them to be active because this is their time, their country and their work to do”. She is the creator of “MADFREE: Liberating Conversations About Image Beauty and Power,” a multi-platform conversation project with revolutionary women, and her latest project Hair Tales. Frequently seen with Anderson Cooper on CNN where she is a regular contributor, her activism began in 2005 when she co-created with Essence the Take Back The Music Campaign, a national conversation about misogyny and misrepresentation of Michaela Angela Davis women of color in mainstream hip-hop music videos. She has appeared on MSNBC, Fox, MTV, VH1, BBC, NBC, and ABC, among others. Davis is most passionate, however, when she is appearing live, having “creative and critical community conversations.” She has led conversations for student audiences on campuses around the country, including Howard University, Yale University, Spelman College, Middlebury College, New York University, and Dillard University, as well as in cultural institutions, community centers, and intimate salons. Policy Panel on Gun Violence, Community Involvement The St. Joseph University Social Justice Committee Gun Violence Awareness Sub-Committee will present a Policy Panel on Gun Violence and Community Involvement featuring Stop the Violence Coalition (STVC) at St. Joseph University R.C. This effort by Friendship Baptist Church is supported by neighboring community clergy and churches such as Rev. Darius Pridgen of True Bethel. It calls for all churches to come together and stand up during a time where there have already been multiple homicides involving members of our community. This has left people afraid to come out and enjoy their home, and our children are being robbed of the opportunity to live in peace and harmony in their own backyard. Pastor Jackson goes on to state, “God has strategically placed all of our churches in this neighborhood, and we have a mandate to impact those around us. Now more than ever, it is time for us to move out of the comforts of our various facilitates, and do the work to restore our prophetic voice in the neighborhood.” The walk, slated for this Saturday at 12 noon, invites all those in community to meet at Friendship Baptist Church parking lot on the corner of Clinton St. and Hickory St. at 11:30am. The event will start with prayer followed by a walk down Clinton to Jefferson to William to Pine and then concluding at Hickory. s early as the Middle Ages, “Moors were commonly viewed as being mostly Black or very swarthy. Black soldiers, specifically identified as Moors, were actively recruited by Rome, and served in Britain, France, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary, Poland, and Romania. St. Maurice, patron saint of medieval Europe, was only one of many Black soldiers and officers under the employ of the Roman Empire. The Moors flourished in Al-Andalus for more than 700 years – from 711 AD until 1492. The Moorish advances in mathematics, astronomy, art, and agriculture helped propel Europe out of the Dark Ages and into the Renaissance. The Moors brought enormous learning to Spain that over centuries would gradually spread through the rest of Europe.The intellectual achievements of the Moors in Spain had a lasting effect; education was universal in Moorish Spain, while in Christian Europe, 99 percent of the population was illiterate, and even kings could neither read nor write. At a time when Europe had only two universities, the Moors had seventeen. In the 10th and 11th centuries, public libraries in Europe were non-existent, while Moorish Spain could boast of more than 70, including one in Cordova that housed hundreds of thousands of manuscripts.

America, Canada and Anti-Muslim Sentiment: A Tale of Two Governments U.S. President Donald Trump’s divisive, nationalist presidency is a sharp contrast to the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ‘s current embrace of inclusiveness and multiculturalism . weekend of chaos in North America ended in tragedy. As President Trump faced a storm of protest against his executive order banning travelers and immigrants from a number of Muslim-majority countries, a mosque in Quebec City was attacked by a White nationalist gunman on Sunday night. At least six people were killed and 18 were wounded. On both sides of the border, it seemed, anti-Muslim sentiment was driving the news. But the Canadian and American governments struck very different notes the next day. And as long as Trump is in the White House, the contrasts between his divisive, nationalist presidency and Canada's current embrace of inclusiveness and multiculturalism seem likely to grow even more stark. Addressing the House of Commons, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the assault on the mosque a terrorist attack. "To the more than one million Canadians who profess the Muslim faith, I want to say directly, we are with you," said Trudeau. He received a standing ovation from the assembled legislators, including his opponents. In Washington, meanwhile, the Trump administration staunchly defended its executive order, which critics deemed "unAmerican" and a boon to jihadist recruitment. White House press secretary Sean Spicer dismissed the numerous tales of lives interrupted — or shattered — as a minor "inconvenience" in the quest to keep Americans safe. When asked about a 5-yearold held by authorities on Saturday, he showed little sympathy. Aside from the public backlash and huge fallout, Trump’s new immigration ban proves to be a bit problematic in other ways. For one, it excludes Muslim-majority nations like Turkey and the United Arab Emirates, which Trump has significant business ties to. Bloomberg News reported that Trump has a $5 million licensing deal to use his name on two currently operating luxury towers over in Istanbul and a management deal in Dubai with Damac Properties Dubai Corporation for a golf course and luxury villas that are currently being built. Most notably, the immigration ban excludes Saudi Arabia, the nation from which a majority of the 9/11 terrorists hailed. Trump currently has business dealings there, too, according to Bloomberg News. Trump has asserted that his newly imposed executive order isn’t a ban on Muslims per se, as there are a number of other Muslim-majority nations that aren’t on his list. But the fact that the president promised priority admittance into the U.S. for Christians and other persecuted religious minorities from the seven countries poked a gaping hole in his argument.

BLACK LIVES MATTER... The number of unarmed people fatally shot by police in the U.S. declined last year, according to data compiled by The Guardian newspaper, but young Black men remain far more likely than Whites to die at the hands of cops. Recent moves to keep better track of lethal police use of force could be undermined by president Donald Trump, who has balked at withholding funds from local departments that fail to report killings.

The revelation came amidst new reports that Steve Bannon will be a member of the National Security Council, a role previously held only by military generals. This unprecedented move occurred after Trump removed the director of National Intelligence and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff as regular attendees from the council. “Steve Bannon, who is the leader of alt-right remember, he runs the alt-right media arm, which is the White supremacist, neo-Nazi arm of the conservative movement,” Nance said. “He is a believer in what is called Duginism. There’s a guy, Alexander Dugin … He is a Russian that is sort of the Rasputin of the anti-democratic movement in eastern Europe that hates the liberal elite.” The analyst believes Bannon is setting the strategy for the White House. said that Bannon was ultimately attempting to push for Eurasianism, which would “align the United States and Russia together in a Christian war against Islam.” Nance insisted that Bannon’s new position on the National Security Council will only give him more leverage, power and influence to make sure the alignment comes to fruition.

On Reparations, It’s Not a Question of “If,” but “How”

There’s been a substantive change in H.R. 40, the Reparations legislation Rep. John Conyers has introduced every year since 1989. Originally, the bill called for a study of whether Black Americans had been injured by slavery and Jim Crow. But now, according to Kamm Howard, chairman of the legislative committee of N’COBRA, the National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America, the bill “begins with the focus that reparations are due, and how does this government engage in reparative initiatives.” He said the 2001 United Nations World Conference on Racism, in Durban, South Africa, made clear the enslaving nations’ “obligation to make repairs” to descendants of the victims. Howard helped Rep. Conyers’ staff reframe the legislation.-BAR

NBLCA of Buffalo Hosts Observation of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

he National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS (NBLACA) of Buffalo will observe National Black HIV/ AIDS Awareness Day on Tuesday, February 7 at 5:30 p.m. at Lincoln Memorial United Methodist Church, 641 Masten Avenue with a community meeting and panel discussion on the troubling rise in HIV and sexually transmitted diseases in Erie County. According to the New York State Department of Health, new diagnoses of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection in residents of Erie County increased nearly 20% in 2015 . The number of reported new diagnoses in 2016 are on pace to match 2015. Additionally, Erie County has an 89% increase I syphilis cases; a 49% increase in Gonorrhea cases and 864 diagnoses of Chlamydia cases in zip code 14215 alone! The panel, moderated by Rev. Kinzer M. n part one of the Get Your Pantry Popping series we discussed the salty and now I would like to talk about the sweet. White sugar and sugar substitutes are a staple in all our homes. While we keep the cardinal rule of clean eating in mind, which is to eat foods as close to its natural state as possible, we must take a thoughtful look at sugar and sugar substitutes and consider making some changes. White Sugar Half of all the sugar produced and consumed in the US comes from the sugar beet plant. The sugar beet is a plant whose root contains a high concentration of sucrose. About eight years ago, nearly all farmers who grew sugar beets started growing genetically modified versions of the sugar beet. A gene from a soil bacteria was inserted into the DNA of the sugar beet. Weeds pose a big problem when the sugar beet is planted and with the alteration of the gene, the genetically modified sugar beet can withstand large applications of pesticides without any impact to the sugar beet. The main ingredient in the pesticide is glyphosate. Dr. Seneff, (Senior Research Scientist at the MIT Computer Science and Artifical Intelligence Laboratory) explains that glyphosate is “the most important factor in the development of multiple chronic diseases Kathleen and conditions, including autism, allerRICHARDSON gies, cancer, Parkinson’s disease, gastrointestinal diseases, cardiovascular diseases, infertility, obesity, depression, Alzheimer’s and more”. So, does this mean you should stop eating and buying sugar? Not at all. Switch from the conventional white sugar to pure cane sugar. Pure cane sugar has not been genetically modified and altered. It is sugar in its purest, most natural form and can be purchased at all grocery stores. Artificial sweeteners like Splenda, Equal, and Sweet’ N Low were offered as an alternative to sugar; a great way to satisfy the sweet tooth without packing on the pounds or further aggravating type 2 diabetes. You do avoid calories with artificial sweeteners, but at what cost? There is evidence to suggest that those who consume artificial sweeteners may be at an increased risk of weight gain, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Artificial sweeteners are made by chemically changing the structure of sugar and adding toxic chemicals. Artificial sweeteners and sugar substitutes are as far away from the natural state of sugar as one can get. Honey, pure maple syrup and date sugar are safe pantry swaps for artificial sweeteners. Remember, the goal is to eat foods as close to its natural state as possible, avoiding foods that have been chemically and genetically altered and modified. You can keep it sweet, but keep it natural with pure cane sugar and natural sweeteners. Bishop Pridgen said he called the gathering because he feels that too often “we as adults are concerned about adult interests and neglect our children.” He made it clear that the call for conversation to seek solutions was not “a Pridgen thing or a True Bethel thing,” and encouraged community churches and mosques to have conversations with youth throughout the city and “to focus on these young people we’re burying so we bury less and see more success!” A planned “Stop the Madness Basketball Tournament” is in the works he said, details to be made available soon. 1917-2017 Colored Musicians Club Centennial

100 Years of Musical, Political, Economic and Cultural Striving in America: The Story of Musicians Union Local 533 As Told by Raymond E. Jackson, Lloyd Plummer and Albert “Eggie” Riding

his year, on February 3 the Colored Musicians Club of Buffalo, the African-American Heritage Corridor, the City of Buffalo and others worldwide, will proudly observe the Centennial of the establishment of Local 533 of the American Federation of Musicians in Buffalo, New York. To tell the history of what is actually more than 100 years of artistic, cultural and organizational history in an authentic way is always a daunting challenge but we have endeavored here to present a brief snapshot of that history as it was told by three of its early officers and barnstormers, Raymond E. Jackson, Lloyd Plummer and Albert Riding. In the years before the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, the presence of few African-

Americans in Erie County was miniscule and even less in Buffalo. After the end of the Civil war, families began moving northward from the agricultural South to the urban North seeking a better way of life in a process that came to be known as “The Great Migration”... Buffalo was one of the cities that attracted them because of its industrial and steel production plant and especially 1890 onwards the African-American population grew rapidly and they became firmly established not only as laborers but also bringing skills and talents, not the least of which was the gift of music. In 1979, the late Dr. Monroe Fordham, founder of the Afro-American Historical Association and former professor in the Department of History and Social Studies at Buffalo State College wrote the following about the presence and impact of the “Great Migration” :

Prior to the “Great Migration of Blacks from the south during the post World-War I era, the majority of Buffalo’s AfricanAmerican community lived in the area east of Main Street bounded by Northampton Street and South Division. Here were located the institutions that were founded by Blacks to provide services to the community. The numerous families and other Black community structures stood as historic testaments to the generations of strong, community minded citizens that had resided in that area....The Colored Musicians Club at 145 Broadway Street is one of a small number of still existing landmarks pertaining to the African-American heritage in Buffalo.”

In 1901 the Metropolitan Orchestra was formed under the direction of William “Bill” Butler. This was the same year of the Pan-American exposition that was held in Buffalo which featured Ragtime music, which was the craze of the day. In 1910 Milton Hardon, in an effort to refine the talents of youth and also to give them direction in life, formed a 25 piece boy’s band which performed in the largest parades of the time. This is in the same period when the cornerstone was laid for St Joseph’s Cathedral at Delaware and Utica. There were other large musical organizations such as the Metropolitan Orchestra as well Drum and Bugle Corps in addition to many accomplished instrumentalists, vocalist and composers but the most popular musicians were those who performed music for critical listening and dancing. These very talented musicians, in spite of being in de-

mand, were not able to avail themselves of organized labor union benefits so after years of being denied, they decided to form their own union under the auspices of the American Federation of Musicians. Raymond E. Jackson became one of the longest surviving early members of Local 533, AFM having been elected to the Board in 1919, serving as its Secretary for a total of 12 years (1920, 1923-1929, 1931-1936) and also seven consecutive terms as President (1937-1943). He also served as Booking Agent for Local 533 which, prior to him, had been non-existent. In addition, he was a representative of the national AFM which required him to travel extensively on

AFM business affairs. He also was the conductor of Local 533’s concert band and drum major for its marching unit. Lloyd Plummer was another early Local 533 member who joined as a member in 1920. He was a reed player and flautist who served seven terms as its President (1930-1936) and more than twenty consecutive years as Secretary (1936-

1965) and Secretary-treasurer (1965-1968). He recalled his beginnings in music as a flute student because that was the only instrument that his family could afford at the time. He later became proficient in reed instruments such as clarinet and saxophones.

THE SCORES OF A MAN: A REVIVAL OF JULIUS EASTMAN

Burchfield Penney pays tribute to the enigmatic composer, whose brazen and brilliant music was all but forgotten by Renata Toney

n May 28, 1990, the classical composer-performer Julius Eastman passed away at age 49 in Millard Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo, New York. Nine months later, his obituary appeared in The Village Voice; none of his friends and colleagues knew until then. Eastman was an enigma, both comfortable and uncomfortable in the many worlds he inhabited: black, white, gay, straight, classical music, disco, academia, Buffalo and downtown New York. In keeping with its commitment to recognize Buffalo’s significance in the development of the avant- garde art scene, the Burchfield Penney Art Center at SUNY Buffalo State will pay tribute to the ground-breaking composer America almost forgot Friday, February 10 with a series of performances. Part of The Center’s M&T Second Friday celebrations, this event is free thanks to M&T Bank and the Cullen Foundation. There is a renewed interest in Eastman, his work and significant impact. “His music, insistent and straight forward, seethes with a tension that resonates with musicians, scholars, and audiences today,” writes Renee Levine Packer, coeditor of Gay Guerilla, who will present a talk and book signing during the tribute to the notable American artist. “Eastman’s provocative titles, including Gay Guerrilla, Evil Nigger, Crazy Nigger, and others assault us with his pain and obsessions.” These purposely confrontational titles caused immediate discomfort. For Julius Eastman, they were a pungent socioeconomic statement on America. He described the significance of these titles at Northwestern University at the opening of his June 1980 performance. Born in Harlem Hospital in New York City, he trained as a pianist and choirboy while growing up in Ithaca, N.Y. After a year of piano study at Ithaca College, he was accepted at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia in 1959. In 1968 he moved to Buffalo, N.Y., where he was a member of the Center of the Creative and Performing Arts (A.K.A the Creative Associates), a SUNY Buffalo music fellowship founded in 1964 by Lukas Foss and Alan Sapp. Eastman was one of approximately 120 musicians that participated in Creative Associates until the program’s close in 1980. While in Buffalo, Eastman performed and toured in works by many of the most prominent contemporary composers in the nation, as well as performing his own pieces. Eastman also wrote compositions for ensembles and/or instruments that he didn’t play. Making bold social statements through composition, he embodied the environment of Western New York’s vital experimental and multi-disciplinary art scene. His usage of provocative words and performances, notably his 1975 participation in a John Cage piece during the inaugural June in Buffalo Festival in which he made sexual comments about his male and female assistants on stage, was not only to rile audience members, but also make important comments on America’s conservative social and economic stance during an era of non-inclusion and bigotry that plagued the African American and LGBTQ communities. “He was a composer of visionary power, a singer with a cavernous bass voice, a collaborator with the diverse likes of Meredith Monk and Pierre Boulez,” according to a recent New York Times article. “Once Julius Eastman left Buffalo for Manhattan in 1976, the tone of the titles of his pieces started to change, from The Moon’s Silent Modulation (1970) to If You’re So Smart, Why Aren’t You Rich (1977), Evil Nigger(1979), etc.,” notes author/composer/performer Mary Jane Leach in The Julius Eastman Project. “Not only had Julius left the protective and nurturing environment of Buffalo, but in New York the divisions between the Uptown and Downtown music scene were more evident, and Julius was caught between both worlds. He had a foot in both camps.” “Julius Eastman was a lost Minimalist and a lost soul. He was a composer of blinding, brilliant talent who died in 1990 at age 49, homeless and forgotten, in Buffalo, N.Y.,” according to the Los Angeles Times. “Eastman was a composer ahead of his time, which is what mainly led to his self-destructiveness and subsequent neglect. But attention is now being paid.”

Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor Celebrates 100 Years and More of African American History and Culture in Buffalo

very year The Association for the Study of African American Life and History identifies a theme for the annual celebration of Black History. The ASALH was founded on September 9, 1915 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, who established Negro History week in 1926. This year’s theme is “The Crisis in Black Education.” In 1933 Dr. Woodson authored The Mis-education of theNegro, which called for a re-examination and restructuring of the institutions created to educate “the Negro.” One of the most famous quotes from his book illustrates the power of education, “If you control a man’s thinking you do not have to worry about his GAIL V. actions. When you determine what a man shall think you do not have to conWELLS cern yourself about what he will do. If you make a man feel that he is inferior, you do not have to compel him to accept an inferior status, for he will seek it himself. If you make a man think that he is justly an outcast, you do not have to order him to the back door. He will go without being told; and if there is no back door, his very nature will de-mand one.” Carter believed that “if you teach the Negro that he has accomplished as much good as any other race he will aspire to equality and justice without regard to race.” The Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor (MSAAHC) was declared one of twenty Heritage Areas in the state of New York. The MSAAHC Commission was established to create a NYS Heritage Area Management Plan that preserves, promotes and protects the precious assets that still exist on Michigan Street. This historic Corridor views itself as a vital partner in the education of students, tourists and Western NY residents as it relates to Buffalo’s rich African American history, heritage and culture. The Corridor is celebrating this year’s African America History theme by highlighting the 100th Anniversary of the Colored Musician’s Club, looking at The Great Migration of Blacks from the South to the North, honoring the activism of Mary Talbert and Frances Nash and investigating how parents, students, teachers and community based organizations can address the crisis in public education.
