Talented Theatrical Artist To Direct Several Plays At The Keybank Rochester Fringe Festival [ROCHESTER, N.Y.] Laura A. Thomas, a playwright as well as a director and actor, will take part at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 in the KeyBank Rochester Fringe Festival in the city's eclectic Neighborhood of the Arts.

Thomas joined the project in June after Word on the Street Theater producer Cassandra Kelly asked if she would lend her expertise to this inaugural event aimed at reaching out to and involving neighborhood residents who might not otherwise attend the more than 500 shows and other activities dur-

ing the Sept. 10 to 21 Rochester Fringe. Thomas is directing Summer of 1961 by Cynthia Rogers-Harrison; Sidewalks of Rochester by Barbara Murphy; and Hipster Hop Over Yourself by Justin Reilly. Many of the playwrights Thomas and others worked with had never written a play before, according to organizers of Word on the Street Theater. A multi-talented theatrical artist in her own right, Thomas most recently had a short piece in 2018 Festival of New Theatre's Bake-Off at Geva Theatre Center in downtown Rochester. Her other credits include acting, directing and writing plays for MMB Theatre Project 1’s Sankofa Theatre Festival, as well as for the Bronze Collective Theatre Fest.

Thomas is now developing Kinfolk, an evening of her oneact plays on relationships, as well as other full-length works.

Word on the Street Theater Word on the Street Theater begins at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21 with the Intersection Intervention Dance Party followed by a series of short plays in which spectators might win a walk-on role. Then the Exercise Express Flag Dance Team “ushers in peace, love, and unity” for the finale. Merriman Street, between Atlantic and University Avenues, is the venue for the 2-hour event. Community Responds To Hate Crime Charges Against Lockport Man In Racially Charged Assault On Sister Jeanneie Muhammad

eanneie Muhammad was viciously attacked after a slight fender bender in July by a 62-year old White man armed with a gun in North Buffalo. The man, Jeffery Calhoun, snatched the keys out of the ignition of her car, tried to take her purse and in a struggle that followed, threw her to the ground three times and used the “n” word. In addition to the emotional trauma, Sister Jeanneie, the wife of Minister Dahveed Muhammad who heads the local Nation of Islam’s Mosque #23, suffered damage to her knee and a concussion. There is a video of the attack thanks to the quick thinking and bravery of Precious Sanatiaga who saw it from her apartment nearby. The community packed the courtroom in a strong show of support for Sister Jeanneie when Calhoun was arraigned. He was set free on $75,000 bail and ordered to return to court September 10. Everyone marked that date on their calendar as they prepared to return in even greater numbers. Chants of “Black Lives Matter” filled the halls of City Court after his attorney held a brief press conference. Organizers then went to work to keep the urgency of the case on the front burner, and not allow the powers that be to sweep it under the rug. They made it clear to District Attorney John Flynn that that they expected Calhoun to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Last week the District Attorney’s office charged Calhoun with one count of Unlawful Imprisonment in the First Degree as a Hate Crime, a Class “D” felony; one count of Menacing in the Second Degree as a Hate Crime, a Class “E” felony; one count of Criminal Impersonation in the First Degree, a Class “E” felony; and one count of Assault in the Third Degree a Class “A” misdemeanor. Sister Jeanneie and the community held a press conference on Saturday in front of the Delavan Grider Community Center to respond to the DA’s decision to charge Calhoun with a hate crime. “We thank District Attorney Flynn,” said her husband Minister Dahveed, “but we don’t intend to go away quietly…we will keep up the pressure and continue to mobilize.” He said it is important that this community send a very strong message of deterrence; that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated, and must be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law. Sister Jeanneie thanked the community and said it was “very healing” to have so much love and strong support. “We’re going to wrap our arms and go forward,” she said. And although her desire is to see Calhoun behind bars, she expressed “mixed feelings about the Hate Crime Charge” because that was no guarantee that justice would be served, citing national racially charged cases as proof. Community activist Sam Radford said they were first seeking justice in Sister Jeanneie’s case. However, they were equally concerned, he said, about the police reaction to shouts of “he has a gun” when they arrived on the scene. “They didn’t say stop or freeze" drop the gun or any other warning, Radford said and he (Calhoun) was allowed to walk all the way up to the police and place the gun on the car. “We can’t even imagine doing that as Black people,” he said. A complaint has been filed with the Common Council to discuss whether or not a public safety issue was properly addressed he noted. “As a community we will continue to mobilize and deal with Jeffrey Calhoun first!” “We know that White supremacy is on the rise,” said community organizer Duncan Kirkwood, "and we’re going to fight it!” Jeffrey Calhoun is scheduled to return to court on Wednesday, October 2 at 9:30 a.m. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of 7 years in prison.

Edmond Dédé

The Negro Philharmonic Society was founded in New Orleans well before the Civil War. The orchestra at one point had more than 100 performers, including a few White members. Its director, Constantin Debergue, was a Black violinist. Racial hostility put an end to the Society prior to the Civil War. Two of its former members, Edmond Dede (1827-1903) and Charles Lucien Lambert, Sr. (c.1828-1896) fled New Orleans in the 1850s and made successful careers in France and Brazil. Dede graduated from the Paris Conservatory and worked as a conductor in Bordeaux, France for 27 years. Edmond Dédé returned to New Orleans only once, in 1893. He came ashore in Texas after the wreck of the steamer Marseille, But weary of the increasing inconveniences and indignities of racial segregation, Dédé returned to France and became a full member of the Society of Dramatic Authors and Composers in 1894. Edmond Dédé died in Paris, where many of his compositions have been preserved at the Bibliotheque Nationale (National Library). Francis “Frank” B. Johnson (1792-1844), a Philadelphia bugler and band leader, was the most popular Black composer in the pre-Civil War United States. He published his first work, “A ColContinued Page13

Men and women who move around throughout the day, even if they just stroll or clean the kitchen and do not formally exercise, are less likely to die prematurely than people who almost never leave their chairs, according to a heartening new study of physical activity and mortality. The, new study, which was published in August in the British Medical Journal, and the largest of its kind to date, finds that any activity, no matter how modest, can reduce mortality risks, with some of the greatest gains seen when people shift from being almost completely sedentary toward rising and ambling for even an extra hour each day.

lmost 5,000 Bahamians have left their country so far after Hurricane Dorian blasted through Grand Bahama and Abaco islands. But Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis promised that the country would start rebuilding the residents' communities so they could return home. Some 70,000 have been left homeless and the death toll continues to rise. There's still controversy brewing after 119 people hoping to evacuate Grand Bahama on a ferry from Freeport to Florida were told to get off if they didn't have visas to enter the US. The ferry's operator apologized for the incident. When asked about the incident on Monday, President Trump said the U.S. needs to be careful about allowing Bahamians into the country following Hurricane Dorian. “I don’t want to allow people that weren’t supposed to be [in the Bahamas],” he said, adding that among the refugees could be “very bad people and some very bad gang members and some very very bad drug dealers.” A US Customs and Border Protection official stressed that people from the Bahamas would be processed in an expedited manner if they came here because of the disaster. Meantime, survivors are telling harrowing stories of destruction and devastation To help Hurricane Dorian victims in the Bahamas and the United States you can donate to the Red Cross or the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. Mercy Corps and The Salvation Army are also accepting donations to provide hurricane relief in the Bahamas. Catholic Relief Services is raising funds to help church partners providing aid in the Bahamas.

Congresswoman Leads Delegation Letter Urging White House to Waive Bahamian Visa Requirements NNPA NEWSWIRE — Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson from Florida is leading a bipartisan letter signed by members of the Florida delegation urging President Donald Trump to waive or suspend certain visa requirements for Bahamians seeking to join relatives in the United States. In a letter addressed to President Trump the delegation wrote: “In light of the unprecedented devastation Hurricane Dorian has wrought on the Commonwealth of the Bahamas and the ensuing humanitarian crisis, we write to respectfully request that your administration provide additional assistance by waiving or suspending certain visa requirements to facilitate the reunification of Bahamians with U.S. relatives.For two days, beginning on September 1, the Category 5 hurricane pummeled northern Bahamas with sustained winds of up to 185 miles per hour, torrential rain, and a storm surge that reached as high as 23 feet. As a result, entire communities have been leveled. More than 13,000 homes on the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama were either severely damaged or destroyed."

obert Mugabe, a prominent Pan African and hero of African independence, died on Friday, September 6 in Singapore. He was 95. It was reported earlier that he is scheduled to be laid to rest in Harare at the National Heroes Acre, set aside for Zimbabweans deemed to have made significant sacrifices for the nation, which emerged from the end of colonial Rhodesia. Funeral plans, however, were still incomplete at press time. Mugabe is viewed by many as a national hero. He was an ex-guerrilla chief who took power in 1980 when Zimbabwe shook off White minority rule. Bob Marley and the Wailers serenaded the huge crowd at the soccer stadium in Harare, the capital. Prince Charles was on hand to formally give up control of his country’s last African colony. At midnight, Zimbabwe – the former Rhodesia – became Africa’s newest independent state and Robert Mugabe, the clear winner of internationally supervised elections just weeks earlier, was its first prime minister. After ruling for nearly 40 years, Mugabe was forced to relinquish power by a previously loyal military in November 2017. He also said Mugabe was a regular participant in meetings and conferences at U.N. headquarters in New York. Dujarric said “the United Nations remains strongly committed to supporting Zimbabwe in its efforts to promote inclusive stability, sustainable development, democratic governance and human rights.” “Words cannot convey the magnitude of the loss as former President Mugabe was an elder statesman, a freedom

fighter and a Pan-Africanist who played a major role in shaping the interests of the African continent,” President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya said on Friday, who called him “a man of courage.’ Current and former leaders of Ghana have lauded Zimbabwe ex-president Robert Mugabe following his death in Singapore. Former Ghanaian President Jerry John Rawlings tweeted

on Friday that Africa lost “a bold and noble statesman.” Rawlings said Mugabe “lived for the dignity of your fellow Black. Clarence Melvin Thompson Sunrise February 15, 1943 – Sunset August 30, 2019 Clarence Melvin Thompson moved to Buffalo at the age of 5 and accepted Christ into his life at an early age. He received his education in the Buffalo Public School system attending PS #6 and East High School where he met the Love of his life Mary Jo Corpening whom he married at the young age of 18. He served his country in the United States Army until his honorable discharge. He was a partner of the Quick Chic Restaurant on Fillmore Ave and worked for General Motors for 25 years.

He was a fun loving, kind and thoughtful family man who was always welcoming to anyone who needed an ear or a bit of advice. He enjoyed entertaining family and friends, loved animals and nature, jazz music and a was diehard Buffalo Bills Fan. An avid reader, Clarence never failed to inspire, inform, and encourage everyone he met with not only facts but more so positive words of wisdom and love.

He was preceded in death by his father Clarence Thompson and best friend Jackson Bradley and leaves to mourn his passing, wife Mary Jo Thompson, sons, Gregory Thompson and Rodney (Carrie) Thompson, daughter Lisa (Cedric) Holloway, seven grandchildren, as well as a host of uncles aunts nephews nieces, cousins and many friends. He will be missed and remembered as a great husband, father and friend to many. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude for the outpouring of love received in this difficult time. Local Artist and Arts Advocate Receives National Underground Railroad Training Event At Niagara U. National Grant For Visionary Arts Project The theme is Crossings: Bridging the Authentic Underground Railroad Past to the Present

oet, writer and arts advocate, Celeste Lawson is one of 42 artists selected from among a pool of more than 1,000 applicants from across the United States to produce her proposed live multi-arts performance, “Typography Of Woman: I Am Not Invisible.”

When the Multi-Arts Production Fund, a national arts funding organization based in New York City, announced the winners of their 2019 grants, Lawson was one of only two honorees from the Western New York region, the other awardee is the GeVa Theater located in Rochester, New York. “I am deeply honored to be chosen for this grant that includes such prestigious organizations as Lincoln Center and artist, Meshell Ndegeocello,” said Lawson. “It is also very humbling because it’s a call to action, to step up your creative game and exploit your imagination. It demands that a high degree of truth as well as artistry represent the subject matter and embrace the audience at the same time.”

Typography Of Woman: I Am Not Invisible will be a live performance designed to leverage the power and universal language of the arts to bring attention to one of the world's most heinous and Celeste Lawson hidden crimes: Human Trafficking. Using a range of arts media, “Typography” will present selections of original works written or visually created by human trafficking survivors and interpreted by local professional artists through music, poetry, and dance. The project will also have a visual arts component that showcases original art of various media themed around human trafficking that is planned to run during the month of March 2020 as a tribute to National Women’s History Month.

Underground Railroad training event will be held September 11-14, 2019 at Niagara University in Niagara Falls, New York. The program is hosted by The National Park Service; National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom (NTF) Program; the Underground Railroad Consortium of New York State; the Niagara Falls National Heritage Area; the Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center; Niagara University; and Association for the Study of African American Life and History. The theme for this training is Crossings: Bridging the Authentic Underground Railroad Past to the Present. The Underground Railroad can be viewed as a migration story of enslaved people who self-liberated and claimed their freedom. Niagara Falls is an internationally-

known destination known for the natural phenomenon of one of the greatest waterfalls in the world. Lesser known, but equally as powerful, are the stories of the Underground Railroad in Niagara Falls and throughout New York State. Some of the most significant crossing points for persons escaping slavery in the South were in New York State along the border with Canada. The training will take place over two days and include workshops on four different tracks, each a half day in length. Thursday, September 12 the morning sessions will address the history of the Underground Railroad. September 13 the present and future of community economic development, and actualizing heritage tourism potential and

community-driven approaches to provide sustainability to sites and their communities will be explored. Field experiences are arranged for Wednesday, September 11 and Saturday, September 14.

The artists participating in Typography of Woman are also survivors of life challenges, not trafficking, but powerful enough to give them empathy and deep compassion for the trafficking survivors and their work. The performance is also to help raise awareness about Project Mona’s House, a local nonprofit organization that helps women victims of trafficking reclaim and restore their lives. Regarding the grant Lawson states, “I was introduced to the true tragedy of human trafficking when I attended the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China in 1995 as a member of one of the delegate groups from Western New York. It was a terrifying eye-opener and for years I have been hoping to find a way to effectively raise awareness on this travesty, and bring attention to the reality that Buffalo, and the Niagara region are robust pipelines in the human commerce trade.” After several rounds of false starts over the years to launch her idea, Lawson says she has finally landed on a solid mechanism to bring the project to fruition. She has also found the perfect artistic collaborators to work with. Last January, at the invitation of musician and composer, Drea d’Nur, Celeste attended a fundraising concert given by d’Nur to support Project Mona’s House. “Immediately after that concert, I knew it was time to try and pull the project together one more time,” Lawson states. "It was an opportunity to do something positive to help this cause that has stayed with me for over 20 years, and simultaneously work with members of my own community and support the efforts of young Black women who are striving to make a positive mark on society. " Robin Hibbert, dancer/choreographer is also a collaborator. A recent recipient of a Western New York Dance and Choreographer’s Project grant, Hibbert will choreograph the dance segments of the performance, and Drea d’Nur will develop and create the soundtrack for the production. “It’s really rewarding,” comments Lawson, “to work with these younger artists who are succeeding in bringing new energy to historical moments in time such as Drea is doing with her Spirit of Nina program, and Robin creating her own technique and dance form based on her knowledge and experience with traditional African dance and modern dance from her training with the Alvin Ailey school. And certainly with Kelly Galloway, the executive director of Project Mona’s House, a young woman passionate about bringing hope and help to the women who have come to Mona’s House seeking shelter from the storm of human trafficking.” The live performance of Typography of Woman: I Am Not Invisible is scheduled for Saturday, March 20, 2020 in Rockwell Hall Performing Arts Center, and on Sunday, March 21st a panel discussion and Q&A session will be held in the Burchfield Penney Art Museum and includes excerpts from the Saturday night production. Tickets for the Rockwell Hall performance will go on sale January 2020 and the Burchfield Penney event is free and open to the public. Young ladies in grades 9-12 and their families are invited to attend an information session for Jabberwock 2020 “Stepping Into the Garden of Womanhood.” The informational will be held on Sunday, September 15. NY-Urban Arts Collective, its community partners Jefferson Art Festival, Jefferson Avenue Businessmen's Association and Fifty Women with a Vision have collaborated to present a community beatification project through art. This first project is Buffalo Renaissance. WNY-Urban Arts Collective will introduce many new community inspired murals with its partners in their community series tilted EASTSIDE CHRONICLE. On Jefferson & Woodland a mural titled Buffalo Renaissance featuring Rick James (John Baker, artist), Grover Washington (James Cooper III, artist), Aretha Franklin (Ari Moore, artist) and Dyke and the Blazers (Kobie Baberartist ) was unveiled during the Jefferson Avenue Arts Festival. Landscaping was done by Constance Strothers, a member of the Eastside Grassroots Garden Club. Further up Jefferson Avenue on the side of Jim Bells Cleaners, artists are refurbishing the figures Malcolm X, Sojourner Truth and Martin Luther King Jr., originally commissioned by Jim Bell and created by artist William Y. Cooper (artists Jay Hawkins Sr. and Gerald Seals are refurbishing the work). On Winslow and Wohlers for the Winslow Block Club #2, president Mama Charlene, Memorial Garden murals will be rendered by artists William Petty, Byron Brown II, Jay Hawkins and John Baker. Funding is provided by Mayor Brown and the City of Buffalo, Division of Citizen Services as part 2019 Love Your Block mini-grant application. This new cycle is called Love Your Block - Powered by Cities RISE. Small scale grants, available to neighborhood associations, block clubs and community-based organization projects for the category of community Space Revitalization (repair, modifications or replacement of murals and landscaping) Additional funding was provided from a generous donation from Legislator April Baskin. Also congratulations to Edreys Wajed, Tyshaun Tyson and Imani Williamson for the great work they're doing on the mural project in Niagara Falls. While the artists are grateful for the opportunity and financial support of this project, it only covered materials. Love of community and creative passion inspired these artists to contribute their talent without compensation. This body of artwork is evidence that what our local African American artists lack is opportunity, not TALENT. Respect needs to be given for their ideals and connection relative to the community vision. They deserve to benefit financially from community art projects paid for with tax dollars. The Albright Knox Art Gallery has chosen for its first project on Northland Avenue, in our community / neighborhood to bring in an artist from New York who will be in charge of hiring our local African American artists for her project. Something is wrong with this picture: Albright Knox director from Finland, deputy director from Texas, public art curator from Chicago and artist from New York. They're offering us pennies while they make dollars exploiting our community /neighborhood. Nothing against the artist but as far as the Albright Knox is concerned I personally will not be supporting or participating. Our local African American artists and community deserve better than this. I can’t speak for all artists but I find this insensitive and insulting regardless of the color of the exhibiting artist. Recently I was offered an exhibition opportunity for WNYUrban Arts Collective in 2020, but the only date they had available was February, I refused. There are 11 other months in the year and the only spot you have available is Black History Month…...? Thanks but no THANKS.

n 1967, John Coltrane’s unexpected and tragic death rattled the music community. He was one of the greatest saxophone players of all time. He wrote jazz music. He recorded new versions of popular songs. And, he helped make modern jazz popular. Coltrane’s gift echoes onward. Impulse Records recently announced that they will release a previously unheard collection of recordings. The album titled, Blue World, will be available on September 27th. Born on September 23, 1926, each year the Burchfield Penney Art Center at SUNY Buffalo State in collaboration with the Pappy Martin Legacy Jazz Collective present a three-day Coltrane birthday celebration. Curtis Lundy is a double bass player, composer, producer, choir director and arranger. Lundy is best known for his work with the jazz vocalist Betty Carter's band. He has played on recordings by John Hicks, Bobby Watson, the Steve Nelson Quintet and Johnny Griffin. He also serves as International Music Director of the Pappy Martin Legacy Jazz Collective. LeNard Rutledge, born and raised in Miami, Florida, where there are only a handful of truly great jazz vocalists, is usually compared, aptly, to the legendary Lou Rawls. LeNard has shared the stage with several highly respectable jazz artist such as Wycliffe Gordon, Kenny Drew Jr., Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kirk Whalum, Marion Meadows and the late George Duke. he Paul Robeson Theatre at the African American Cultural Center opens its 52nd season on Friday, September 20, at 350 Masten Avenue with Ladies Swing The Blues: A Jazz Opus Folklore in the Key of Swing, Four jazz icons, Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee gather in the jazz club Birdland in 1953 to sing, swing, & riff, about the death of Charlie Parker. Ladies Swing The Blues premieres at 8p.m.. on Friday, September 20 as part of Buffalo’s annual Curtain Up! event. Curtain time for the remainder of the run – through Sunday, October 13 – is 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and Sunday Matinee’s at 4pm. The production cast features Brittany M. The Beast Elite Ducks Lost More than a Game…

Last Saturday Morning a sea of little boys in matching white tee shirts bearing the image of their beloved coach Norzelle “Nore” Aldridge, lined up at Jefferson and Genesee Street - not for a game or fun filled event – but for their coaches funeral. The 9 and 10 year old boys, members of the Beast Elite Ducks youth football team, were accompanied by other teams, coaches, supporters and friends, as they walked in front of the long funeral procession carrying the team banner to the church where services were held just several blocks away. Aldridge, just 36, was the victim of senseless gun violence not far from where his team had played only hours earlier. According to news reports he was trying to break up a fight after the game (but not related to the game), when he was fatally shot. On that day, their first game of the season, the Ducks lost. But they lost so much more than a football game…..Our deepest condolences... Challenger Photos

In Boys Basketball The 716ers Elite Announce 2019 Fall Youth AAU Tryouts for the Fall session of their youth basketball program in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). Pan American Games Athletes Given 12 Months of Probation for Protests Against Racism, Gun Control WASHINGTON INFORMER — American Pan American Games athletes Race Imboden and Gwen Berry both protested on stage in Lima, Peru, and were sentenced to 12 months of probation for their actions. The head of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee warned of harsher punishments in the future to any athletes who might protest onstage, The Washington Post reported. Imboden, a 26-year old fencer, took a knee on the podium after he helped the U.S. men’s team win gold and Berry, 30, raised a fist and bowed her head as a rendition of “The StarSpangled Banner” neared its close. Imboden said that while he was “honored to represent Team USA at the Pan Am Games,” he felt compelled to present a call for change.“My pride … has been cut short by the multiple shortcomings of the country I hold so dear to my heart.” Among the issues Imboden said he was protesting were “Racism, Gun Control, mistreatment of immigrants, and a president who spreads hate.” Berry told NBC Sports that “A lot of things need to be done and changed…I just know America can do better.”

Justin Holland (1819-1887), was a classical guitarist who composed and arranged hundreds of works which were widely played in the 19th Century. After two periods at the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio, he became Cleveland’s first black professional classical musician and music teacher. José Silvestre White (1835-1918) was an Afro-Cuban violinist who excelled at the Paris Conservatory and later served as a professor there for many years. During the 1875-1876 season White performed twice with the New York Philharmonic under Conductor Theodore Thomas Thomas “Blind Tom” Wiggins (1849-1908) was a blind and autistic enslaved African who was a classical pianist and a composer of popular songs. Owners and managers kept control of Wiggins and his huge income all his life prompting Geneva Handy Southall, his biographer, to subtitle her account of him, “Continually Enslaved.” Scott Joplin (1868-1917) was known as the “King of Ragtime,” but he also composed classical works. His opera “Treemonisha” has been performed by the Gunther Schuller and the Houston Grand Opera. Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875-1912) was an Afro-British composer who wrote Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast in 1898. His composition was performed in concert over 200 times and made his name a household word on both sides of the Atlantic. William Grant Still (1895-1978) was an oboist, arranger and composer of jazz and popular music themes. He incorporated the Blues and jazz in his “Afro-American Symphony” which premiered in 1931 and is still one of the most recognized classical works by Black composer.

Bills shock Jets With 17-16 Comeback Win The Buffalo Bills 2019 Season will once again hinge on Defensive play and how healthy they can stay throughout the season. The Bills offense will need QB Josh Allen to improve off last season and be more constant in completions and moving the team down the field. The Bills offense once again starts the season very sluggish and Allen had 4 turnovers in the first half. The Bills have a Super Bowl type defense that can carry the team to greatness but will be in big trouble if left on the field too long during games like Jets contest. The “No Huddle” offense is good if you are getting first downs and controlling the clock, but if you are three and punting the ball your defense will Devin Singletary /Photo Jerome eventually wear down. Davis Bills rookie defense tackle Ed Oliver was very impressive with his aggressive style of play and he seemed to get stronger as the game went on. Ed, said: “I really feel good after my first NFL game. The carryover of how I was trained playing 90 plays a game in high school helped prepare me for the NFL. It’s been my life dream to play in the NFL and I could play another game right now!” Oliver seems to be a very nice down home hard working young man from Houston, Texas who will bring energy throughout his career. Bills fans will enjoy his bull rushing skills by over powering offensive linemen and allowing our defensive end like Jerry Hughes, Trent Murphy and Shaq Lawson to make plays in the backfield. It’s going to be another fun season of watching Bills defense dominate many opponents. The Bills first half of season is very winnable before a stretch of second half games that will let us know the true quality of this year’s team. Bills running back Frank Gore said, “Our defense played hard and kept us in the game. We wanted to start fast with no huddle offense and make first downs. The Jets have a tough defense but we kept punching, and punching until we finally had some success running the ball.” That changed when Jets star linebacker C.J. Mosley left the game with a pulled groin which allowed the Bills running game to have success with Devin Singletary and Frank Gore breaking off huge runs in the 4th quarter. These successful running plays allowed Bills QB Josh Allen to settle down and make plays down the field. Bills players asked local media in locker room if we thought they were going to lose, being down 16 in 4th quarter. The answer a resounding and YES! I did not see the Bills coming back from that deficit. Bills Center Mitch Morse had a very good game especially in the 4th quarter (most of team did as well) and must stay concussion free in order to benefit the team. The Bills will have to keep their fingers crossed that Mitch Morse can make it through the season concussion free! The Bills return to MetLife Stadium again on Sunday facing the downward spiraling New York Giants in an inter-conference game. I see the Bills defense dominating once again and offense doing just enough to survive and come away with another hard fought win 24 – 20. Recently the MEN of the East Delavan community sponsored the 6th annual E.D.P day. It was a totally free event. The men raised close to $2000 in 19 days. The MEN spent EVERY DAM PENNY (EDP) for purpose over profit. The MEN provided hamburgers, hotdogs, sausages, huggies, pop, and waters throughout the entire day. At 3 p.m. the MEN handed out 120 full book bags to the community youth from kindergarten to college. We thought it was important to not just hand these young people a book bag and they walk away. We also chose ten children we are going to track for this entire upcoming school year. If they have perfect attendance and no trouble, they will get a generous present every marking period. There will be random phone calls to check in with the children. We thought it was important for us to bring each child to the microphone and talk about the upcoming school year. We set the entire day up for MEN to serve the food, MEN to hand each child a book bag, MEN to speak to each child at the microphone about the upcoming school year. The MEN also served full fried chicken dinners at 4 p.m. Nothing against our community women. But we thought it was important for MEN to take their place and show the children the importance of MEN being the provider, MEN providing direction, MEN on one accord, and MEN making them feel safe at the park. We ended the evening with fireworks to pay tribute to the brothers and sisters we lost along the way. In order for my readers to understand why this event was so importan, take a walk with me. As a child I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s on Schuele Street in the East Delavan community. At that time we had White neighbors on both sides of our home and across the street. A mixed community full of family and homeowners. Every household had the same last name. The Doyle’s, the Walker’s, the Martins, the Lott’s, the Ivey’s, the Green’s, the Jackson’s, etc. It was a time businesses were thriving. We had Wilson Farms, Scotties, the rec, Woodys, JVs, the Mini Mall, Mike’s records, drug stores, Avon’s, Churches Chicken, School 23, etc. Then the late 80’s, early 90’s came. Boom! Crack hit like someone dropped a small bomb in an entire community. Crack hit every household in my community. Either you were buying or selling. Strong families were left in the rubble. Fist fights became murder. Childhood friends were meeting in prison. The word neighborhood was destroyed and now we just go with "the hood." The businesses mysteriously were burning down one at a time. Men left their households desiring more than one woman and one family. BUT through it all a crew from the community rose up from the ashes. A crew standing strong, living for purpose over profit. A crew that meets every year to revive a community and laugh with old friends. A crew that’s focused on our young people. That crew is the mighty EDP! We're just getting started. Republicans Use Gerrymandering To Gain A Political Advantage Voting is on the minds of many people these days. We see the histrionics and we know our vote is going to make a difference. Our apathy of yesterday must turn into our assertiveness today. Sitting back and thinking these times will get better is only wishful thinking. Today, there are hard-hearted men and women in public office so we cannot drop our guard. They are ruthless and relentless and will not stop until long standing traditions are decimated and destroyed. Just a few weeks ago, approximately 680 undocumented workers, mainly Latino immigrants were taken from their jobs by federal agents in Mississippi. Families were torn apart and futures were dismantled. The immigration authorities have become mean-spirited and insensitive. Is our country still a country of a second chance?

first sentence of the piece written by Brent Kendall and Jess Bravin says, “A panel of state-court judges struck down North Carolina’s legislative districts Tuesday, ruling that Republicans improperly gerrymandered state voting lines to provide an enduring political majority for the GOP”. The North Carolina Republican Party should be embarrassed because of their unethical actions. The National GOP should put them on probation until after the 2020 elections. Will the party that features Mitch McConnell and Ted Cruz do something? You know and I know they won’t. North Carolina State Senator, Phil Berger said, “Republicans wouldn’t appeal and instead comply and move forward with the adoption of a nonpartisan map”. Maybe we should applaud him for wanting to be fair and impartial. Being fair and impartial are two qualities that are in short supply in today’s Republican Party.

We have lost our moral compass in a sea of discontent. No longer do we give our brothers and sisters the benefit of the doubt. We give them the cold shoulder. Those in this camp of ill repute have lost their humanity. Mr. T and his band of incorrigibles will continue in 2020 if we don’t vote.

In my opinion, Republicans of good will who have a conscious have been swallowed up by this extreme faction of their party. The voices of Susan Collins from Maine and Tim Scott from South Carolina have become almost muted and silenced. They are ashamed of what is happening to the Grand Old Party. You can’t make wrong right and you can’t make evil good.

Gerrymandering has taken a new position of prominence in the GOP. Republican leadership see this as a strategy to gain more control of legislative bodies. Their power and disregard for the rules have led them to try to redraw voting districts.

It is important for we the people to speak up and to speak out against this voter tyranny because that is what gerrymandering is. We must use our legislators to our benefit. We must be heard!

Democrats and Independents must wake up and fight this illconceived activity. We can no longer reason with insanity. Our patience has run out. It is time to march, to protest and to bring this malpractice to a screeching halt.

Forces that perpetuate evil have become more a part of our political process than ever before in our history. We can’t allow dishonest people to create dishonest systems that leave people without a vote and without a voice. Our right to vote is being compromised. We are being hoodwinked at the ballot box.

How Imperialism Undermined Zimbabwe By Monica Moorhead

The Berlin Conference in 1884-85 — the “Scramble for Africa” conference — is where the European capitalist countries met to carve up virtually the entire African continent in order to expand their markets for profits by super-exploiting African labor and plundering its super-rich mineral resources. In the case of Zimbabwe, it was Cecil Rhodes who became the British colonizer of what was called Rhodesia in the late 1800s. Rhodes established the DeBeers Mining Company, known for its stolen diamonds from Zimbabwe. He treated the entire country as his private slave plantation, with the backing of state brutality. By 1914, white settlers, numbering just 23,730, owned slightly more than 19 million acres of land in Rhodesia, while an estimated 752,000 Africans occupied a total of 21,390,080 acres of land. (“A brief history of land in Zimbabwe: 1890-today,” focusonland.com) Eventually thousands of white farmers (colonizers) carried out a systematic campaign of wars and massacres to uproot the Indigenous African population from their lands. Ian Smith was proclaimed prime minister of Rhodesia in 1964 and confiscated 6,000 acres for himself. His apartheid policies codified white farmers’ use of the land for commercial farming

of crops like tobacco to be sold as commodities on the world capitalist market. So while these farmers were enriching themselves, the people of Zimbabwe faced starvation and were reduced to being “tenants” on their own lands. Carrying forth the legacy of the first two phases of the liberation struggle, the Third Chimurenga (liberation struggle) created two fronts which arose in the late 1960s — one was ZANU (Zimbabwe African National Union) led by Robert Mugabe and the other was ZAPU (Zimbabwe African People’s Union) led by Joshua Nkomo. These two guerrilla factions joined forces as the Patriotic Front to force the Smith government to the negotiating table in Britain and to sign the 1980 Lancaster House Accords, which was a compromise that supposedly held the British government accountable for financially compensating white farmers so that Black farmers could reclaim their lands. A large sector of those who fought for the liberation of Zimbabwe were landless Black farmers or war veterans. Twenty years later, these same war veterans pressured the Mugabe government to remove the commercial farmers, by force if necessary, because the British government had reneged on the Lancaster accord.

Phase One of Campaign to Replace Statue of Dr. King IN MLK Park Complete Dear Editor: We the people of the City of Buffalo, County of Erie and State of New York, residents in proximity of Buffalo's Martin Luther King. Jr. Park, have suffered dismay and embarrassment by the display of an altered image purporting to represent the Honorable Rev. Martin Luther King. Jr. Our very legitimate criticism of the distorted image on exhibit arises out of the fact that it not only fails to exhibit any of the physical features of Dr. King, but it is so distantly remote from his actual appearance that it suggests an insulting stereotyping. Most visitors and those who pass by have no idea as to who or what the huge black head represents, unlike others across the country who are able to take great pride in the statues of other American heroes ; sculpture that serves an accurate depictions of their idol. We the people of Buffalo and Western New York have been robbed of the opportunity to experience the exhilaration and pride that a display of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., should engender.

The sculpture is the property of the City of Buffalo. It was unveiled in November 1983. On January 15, 2018 on Martin Luther King’s national holiday, we the Coalition to Save MLK Park kicked off the " We the People Petition campaign.” Our petition pleads for the removal of the image on exhibit in MLK Park that negligently alters the image of this great American, and we hereby petition the City of Buffalo for its immediate removal and replacement to correct that wrong and replace it with a larger than life size replica identical to the likeness of Dr. King . Please join us this Saturday September 14 from 10 to 11:15 a.m. rain or shine for a press conference in front of the sculpture in MLK Park. When we started circulating the petition our goal was to collect 10,000 names on paper. Come and stand with others who signed our petition, as we bring an end to Phase #1 (the petition process). Mugabe then established a radical land redistribution program, allowing war veterans to take back their stolen lands, including by force. Tony Blair and George W. Bush imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe starting in 2002 as an act of war against the population. These sanctions [that still exist today] slashed fuel and food subsidies with the aim of turning the masses against Mugabe by making him the scapegoat for any economic hardships imposed by imperialism. Why have U.S. and British imperialism hated Mugabe? Mugabe is a former leader of a national liberation movement that helped to bring an end to a racist, apartheid-like regime. He backed the war veterans taking back their land from the white colonizers and was unapologetic about doing so. With all his political contradictions, Mugabe was willing to stand up against U.S. and British imperialists. This article which originally appeared in Workers World, was excerpted from a talk given by Monica Moorehead at a Dec. 21, 2017, forum, “How imperialism undermined Zimbabwe,” following Mugabe’s resignation from the presidency.
