Rochester Anti-Violence Organization, Stop Kill'n Start Chill'n Celebrates its 9th Anniversary: The founder of Stop Kill'n Start Chill'n, Bishop Britt Pledger, pictured above, hosted the organization’s 9th year Anniversary to acknowledge the officers of the organization and its sponsor, the Office of the Coalition of the Northeast Association C.O.N.E.A and families that have lost loved ones. The service took place January 18 at 76 N. Union Street at The Word of the Cross Church .

The Legacy Project: The Eyes of Our Ancestors A portrait Series by Artist Shawn Dundwoody Honoring the Legacy of Historical Figures was Unveiled Jan. 9 at East High

East High School, in conjunction with the University of Rochester and the Department of African/African American Studies at the Rochester City School District, unveiled a series of panels, approximately 10 x 4 feet in size, each featuring a life-size portrait of a significant individual/leader of color. The project, titled The Legacy Project: The Eyes of Our Ancestors, installed 29 close-up portraits of both local and national/international leaders, all connecting to the Pan-African, Latinx, and Island/ Asian Cultures that are at the heart of East’s school community. The selection of individuals featured and honored throughout this series was based on community input—from the voices of Rochester youth and their families, as leaders they deem important to the Greater Rochester community. This project will be on display in the East High School courtyard, allowing room for future growth and the addition of individuals for years to come. Each portrait includes a brief story and historical facts about the individual featured. Nine local Rochester activists were unveiled and featured, as well as 20 well-known national/international activists, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Barack Obama, Harriet Tubman, Nelson Mandela, and other activists/revolutionary leaders who have inspired countless Rochester families and dedicated their lives to equity. The artwork on display was created off site by local artist Shawn Dunwoody. Among those in attendance at the unveiling was East Superintendent Dr. Shaun Nelms, associate professor at the University of Rochester; Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren; Shawn Dunwoody, local artist; Dr. Jason Willis, director of African & African American Studies, Rochester City Schools; and Tony Award-winning Choreographer Garth Fagan. The Legacy Project: The Eyes of Our Ancestors connects back to the overarching theme of Zora Neale Hurston’s novel Their Eyes Were Watching God, a story that chronicles a woman who finds self-realization through trials and tribulations in her life. This common theme reinforces the legacy of historical leaders, both locally and from around the world, throughout the project. The culturally-responsive project also aligns closely with the English language arts (ELA) curriculum at East with all students having participated in a book study as part of their Family Groups that meet daily.

AREA BRIEFS Thompson Ranked Among Most Powerful in Real Estate Industry Antoine M. Thompson of Buffalo has been ranked on the Swanepoel Power 200 list ranking of the most influential and powerful leaders and executives in the residential real estate brokerage industry. Thompson is currently the Executive Director of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) the largest organization of African-American real estate professionals in the United States. He is a partner with Creative PMO Solutions a consulting firm that focuses on diversity, inclusion and advocacy work. He is also a licensed real estate agent with Howard Hanna. Antoine is a staunch champion of fair-housing and community reinvestment by local and national financial institutions. He has had a significant public service career in his hometown of Buffalo. His Antoine M. Thompson positions have included appointments to the Buffalo Common Council where he authored the Buffalo Fair Housing law and secured over $75 million for community development projects. He was elected to the New York State Senate in 2004 and 2008 and served as the Senate Deputy Majority Whip and Chair of the Senate Standing Committee on Environmental Conversation and Co-Chair of the Senate Minority and Woman Business Enterprise Task Force. He authored the NYS MWBE Mentor/ Protégé Law. Congratulations Antoine!

Harriet Tubman Parade and Program

The annual Harriet Tubman Parade and after-march cultural program will be held from 12 noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 7. The parade route starts at the NFTA's East Utica Street Metro Station, proceeds down Main Street, turns on East Ferry, turns on Jefferson and ends at the Merriweather Library on Jefferson. The after-march program will be held at the library from 2-4 p.m. The entire event is free. This is a march against poverty and for community unity in celebration of Harriet Tubman’s courage. n a show of unity not seen in decades in this city, the Black community rose up as one to demand justice. This time on behalf of our youth. The Coalition for Fair, Free and Equitable Athletics chaired by Dwayne O. Taplin, sprang into action once they learned of the racially biased decision by the Section VI Football Federation to exclude city football teams – notably Bennett, Burgard, Hutch-Tech, McKinley and South Park from competing in league play against suburban and rural teams. Two well attended community gatherings were held by the Committee; the most recent being last Friday at the St. John Family Life Center. The purpose of those meetings was to coordinate community-led efforts to overturn the vote from Section VI and to build support around this critical issue. At the same time there were others at work - elected officials citizens and organizations - to address the issue By the time the press conference was held at Bennett High School on Dr. Martin Luther King's Birthday this past Monday, everybody was on board including Mayor Brown, Assembly Majority Leader Crystal Peoples Stokes, Council President Pridgen, Senator Tim Kennedy, the Coalition for Fair Free and Equitable Athletics, MVP, School Board members, parent and community groups, elected officials, former Bills legends Booker Edgerson and Thurman Thomas, community media groups, coaches, players and parents. Mayor Brown was firm as he admonished the powers that be in the spirit of Dr. King, to do the right thing as he called for a “prompt, equitable solution” to the matter. “The time is always right to do what is right,” he said quoting Dr. King. Majority Leader Peoples-Stokes called the Section V1 controversy “probably one of the most important issues that will impact us this year.” "Now is not the time to step backwards, but to step forward to include people – not exclude" she said addressing Section VI leaders. "Keep it positive and change this decision!” Senator Tim Kennedy referred to the issue as “an unfortunate disparity taking place right before our eyes…this decision is not right and needs to be reversed.” Football Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas, a youth spokesperson, and Council President Darius Pridgen also spoke and called for unity and equity. Former Legislator and We Are Women Warriors founder, Betty Jean Grant, speaking to the Challenger after the press conference, made it plain. “When you exclude Buffalo (from the league) you exclude the majority of African American football players,” said Grant. “Is it racism? Yes it is! Is it discrimination? Yes it is! But for Dr. King Day let’s go forward and restore our youth to Section VI football!” -Just For a Season?The groundswell from this community and its supporters apparently made an impact. Before the day ended the local governing body for Section VI high school sports agreed to delay the changes for next season. But what about the seasons to follow? “A lot of things are at stake…,” community activist Charley Fisher told the challenger Tuesday Continued Page 10

At the height of its power, Mali had at least 400 cities. •The Malian city of Timbuktu had a 14th century population of 115,000 - 5 times larger than medieval London. Mansa Musa built the Djinguerebere Mosque in the fourteenth century. There was the University Mosque in which 25,000 students studied and the Oratory of Sidi Yayia. There were over 150 Koran schools in which 20,000 children were instructed. London, by contrast, had a total 14th century population of 20,000 people.

SBA and SCORE Buffalo Niagara to present Straight Talk 2020 and the Straight Talk Series BUFFALO, NY – Straight Talk 2020 is the 24th annual presentation of this program which over the years has attracted thousands of participants. Straight Talk exposes future and current small business owners on information about starting or growing their business. Invited guests at Straight Talk 2020 include Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, City of Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, SBA Administrator, SBA Region II Regional Administrator Steve Bulger each offering inspiration to the participants. Straight Talk 2020 is a half-day seminar held on Saturday, January 25, 2020. The seminars reflect the ever-changing needs of the Western New York entrepreneurial community. Black-Owned Construction Firm Expects To Collect $37.5 Million In New Revenues From Joint Venture H.J. Russell & Co. has formed a joint venture with construction giant Skanska to expand Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. The two construction firms will build the Center for Advanced Surgical Services (CASS), adjacent to Grady Memorial Hospital’s main campus in Atlanta. The freestanding 576,960-squarefoot structure will cost $151 million. Work on the 10-story project has begun and is expected to be done by the first quarter of 2022. With revenue of just over $178 million, H.J. Russell was No. 25 on the 2019 BE 100s list, an annual ranking of America’s top blackowned businesses. The company reports it will have a 25% stake in the joint venture. That stake is expected to generate more than $37.5 million in new revenues during the life of the project .-BE

'Say YES’ BOYS & MEN OF COLOR YOUTH LEADERSHIP COUNCIL GRADUATE The Breaking Barriers program recently graduated its second cohort of students at the Northland Workforce Training Center. For the past year, nearly 30 young men of color ages 12–24 have worked to identify and develop strategies to remove policies and laws that negatively affect men of color. Through their unified voice, they are advocating for racial equity, social justice and policy change and, over the last year, have worked to address the practices and systems that hold back males of color. “We are proud of this year’s group of young men who have learned that they have the ability to effect positive change in their community and have begun doing so in many ways,” said Tommy McClam, Director of Boys & Men of Color Initiative for Say Yes Buffalo. “We congratulate them as they move forward to being the men that will break barriers and impact lives in our city.” The graduation took place Saturday January 18, 2020 at the Northland Workforce Training Center. nce again Buffalo Bills had an opportunity to see the Quarterback Bills should have drafted a couple of years ago. Yes, many people state that the Kansas City Chief QB would be as effective in Buf-falo as he is in Kansas City. I agree with this train of thought but the real difference is Patrick Mahomes would be playing so much better than what we have in Josh Allen. Josh Allen is mentally incompetent to play the position of QB in the NFL. He does not have the thought process needed in order to make quick decisions at a rapid pace to be successful in the league. That’s not to mention Allen’s poor mechanics; mainly his footwork is totally unacceptable and when he is under pressure he reverts back to his poor skill level of throwing football downfield. The only thing Josh and Patrick Mahomes have in common is a strong arm and athletic ability for running with the football. Mahomes led his team to victory accounting for 4 TDs in a win over Tennessee Titans 35-24. Mahomes usual superb passing game led his team to another important win. Mahomes accuracy and ability to read complex defenses is leading his team to a 14—4 record and first Super Bowl appearance in 50 years. Mahomes said, “I mean, it’s amazing. It really is good to be here, to be a part of Chiefs Kingdom and to be able to do it here at Arrowhead. These people deserve it. And, we’re not done yet.” Mahomes was 23 for 35 for 294 yards and his biggest touchdown pass was a 60 yarder that went to former Buffalo Bill Sammy Watkins. Mahomes also ran for 53 yards including a 27 yard TD run. The moral of the story is Josh Allen can’t be compared to an elite QB like Patrick Mahomes and the very poor drafting decisions made by General Manager Brandon Beane and Head Coach Sean McDermott could go down in NFL Draft History as the worst draft day trade ever made by a team. San Francisco 49’ers defeated the Green Bay Packers 37-20 for the NFC Championship. Raheem Mostert rushed for an amazing 220 yards and four touchdowns. This made 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo’s job much easier and with a revamped defense brought in by recently named NFL Executive of the year John Lynch. We must take a closer look at who’s helping John lynch make these important decisions. It’s former Buffalo Bill defensive back Martin Mayhew. He and former Head Coach Jim Caldwell worked together with the Detroit Lions. They had the Lions on track with two 9-7 seasons and instead of being rewarded with a new contract both were fired. That’s how Black Executives are treated in the NFL. The Detroit Lions have had two losing seasons with a white Head Coach and General Manager 3—12— 1 & 6-10 respectively but was given a vote of confidence by the Ford family (owners) and will return for another season. John Lynch’s best move was hiring Martin Mayhew as Vice President of Player Personnel. Mr. Mayhew has been very instrumental in transforming the 49ers from a losing team to a Super Bowl finalist. The Detroit Lions got what they deserved and more power to the 49ers for bringing on an experienced winning former General Manager. There's a reason why some franchises have a history of winning while others continue to be losers. You must judge a man by his skills and abilities and not by the color of his skin. Earthquake Relief Fund"

WNY Latino Community Mobilizes to Aid Puerto Rico Western New York Latino Leaders have come together, once again, to create the PR Earthquake Relief Fund. The group first united in 2017 as the Puerto Rico Hurricane Maria Relief Fund, and provided disaster relief to Puerto Rico and emergency assistance to 1,238 hurricane survivors in Western New York. The PRERF has also begun coordinating services and resomces locally for earthquake survivors who are evacuating and presenting in WNY. They are in need of new and gently used household supplies, kitchen items, linens, clothing, coats, boots, personal care products and food. Some funds collected may also support this local effort. The earthquakes in Puerto Rico began on December 28, 2019, followed by hundreds of smaller earthquakes and aftershocks. A 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit on January 7, 2020 leaving the residents without power or water. Many of the houses, schools, hospitals and other struct1ues in the southern part of the island were destroyed. They are asking Western New York to come together once again to help Puerto Rico! A TRIBUTE TO WILLIE JUDSON JR.

During a beautiful tribute to Willie Judson Jr. in December at the African American Cultural Center, produced and performed by his family and close friends (photos above), the Willie Judson Jr. Scholarship was announced. The family expressed “heart felt love and gratitude” for the ”shower of support” poured into the Willie Judson Leadership Scholarship, in celebration of the late actor, director, mentor and community leader who transitioned on March 25, 2019. Judson, an amazingly talented actor, was a theatrical powerhouse. He co-founded the People of Drama Acting Ensemble, wrote and produced numerous original Willie Judson plays and formerly served as the Arts Director/ Coordinator for the Friendship House Theatre and Arts Development Center. He also worked as the Drama Director for the New York State Division of Youth at the African American Cultural Center (AACC). Active in the community, he was a graduate of East High school and attended Buffalo State College and Daemen College where he studied drama and history. He and his lovely wife Mae Judson, were married for nearly 46 years. “We will move forward in Power,” a statement from the family declared, “ supporting graduating seniors who share his passion for art and social activism. This scholarship specifically looks to recognize young people whose point of views may challenge or counter normative standards. Such students are often overlooked. This award is not for the students that do ‘everything right,’ but rather ask how can matters be made right? ”

Bobcats Mitchell: 1000 Points and Counting! On Friday, January 17, 2020; Tyrell Mitchell of the Bryant & Stratton Bobcats was able join the 1000 point club as a college basketball player. Mitchell recalls that this was an unreal achievement that he worked very hard for as he stated “I Never got a 1000 points in high school. I only played one year though, I had like 600 points.” Needing 32 points to make the club prior to this game. He was only able to score 12. But with 20 being the lucky number last Friday and going away for the next contest Mitchell wanted to attain this accomplishment in front of family and friends. And that Basket #1,000! When asked how far he wants to take basketball? He said he would like to play professionally overseas and if that doesn’t happen he would like to open a center for kids because that’s what kept him off the streets. Doris 'Dorie' Miller to be Honored by Navy with Aircraft Carrier in His Name World War II hero and Mess Attendant 2nd Class Doris Miller will have a new aircraft carrier named for him according to The Honolulu Star-Advertiser. The announcement was made at Pearl Harbor Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This will actually be the second warship to be named for Miller as he was previously honored when a Knox-class destroyer escort was named the USS Miller (FF 1091). Doris “Dorie” Miller was the first African American to receive the Navy Cross for valor which he earned for manning a machine gun on the USS West Virginia and returning fire against Japanese planes during the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor. The story goes: In 1941, Miller was 22 years old when he was collecting laundry the day an attack alarm sounded. His normal battle station in an antiaircraft battery magazine was destroyed by a torpedo and he went on deck and carried wounded soldiers to safety before receiving orders to aid his captain who had been badly wounded. “He headed for his battle station, the antiaircraft battery magazine amidship, only to discover that torpedo damage had wrecked it, so he went on deck,” the Navy account states. “Because of his physical prowess, he was assigned to carry wounded fellow sailors to places of greater safety. Then an officer ordered him to the bridge to aid the mortally wounded captain of the ship. He subsequently manned a 50-cal. Browning anti-aircraft machine gun until he ran out of ammunition and was ordered to abandon ship.” This was a big deal because, for one, Miller was not trained to operate the gun. “It wasn’t hard. I just pulled the trigger and she worked fine. I had watched the others with these guns. I guess I fired her for about fifteen minutes.” Miller said according to Star-Advertiser. Secondly, and more importantly, black soldiers weren’t allowed to man a gun in the Navy in 1941 according to Doreen Ravenscroft, a team leader for the Doris Miller Memorial. “I think that Doris Miller is an American hero simply because of what he represents as a young man going beyond the call of what’s expected,” said Ravenscroft. “Without him really knowing, he actually was a part of the Civil Rights movement because he changed the thinking in the Navy.” She added, “In the end, the fact that he didn’t think about what could be repercussions — that wasn’t a thought, when, at the time and in war, he did what was needed in his way to defend the United States of America.” Adm. Chester W. Nimitz, the commander in chief of the Pacific Fleet, presented the Navy Cross to Miller in Pearl Harbor in May 1942. The following year, in November, Miller died while serving on a ship that was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine.

"We should have 8 of the 32 memberships and we should have at least 2 of those executive committee memberships." He said the actions of the Section V1 are nothing short of “blatant racism and blatant isolation of our kids.” “On Monday MLK's birthday they did as requested – rescinded the action, but they did not move the goal post. They're not saying they’re not giving this up. ” Strong coalitions made up of parents, coaches, community leaders, elected officials youth and more are critical now and are going to be critical in the future, said Fisher. After Section VI Victory, A Call for Community Coalition to Address School Suspensions In an incredible show of solidarity, a coalition of community leaders united to stand in support Buffalo Public School student athletes. The chorus of voices were made up of NYS Assembly Majority Leaders Crystal Peoples-Stokes, NYS Senator Tim Kennedy, Mayor Byron Brown, Council President Darius Pridgen, a number of parents groups like the DPCC and MVP, the Buffalo Teacher’s Federation, the Buffalo Board of Education, Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash, the NAACP and a number of Buffalo coaches and parents. This powerful coalition was able to get Executive Committee of Section VI to reverse their decision to push Buffalo Schools out of their league. What is even more impressive was the record time that the coalition was able to win this huge victory. Myself, and other parent leaders in coordination with the NY Education Trust Fellows are hosting a “To Suspend or Not to Suspend” (part 2) forum on Jan 30 at 5:30pm at 683 Northland Ave. to continue to build momentum to replace out of school suspensions in BPS. We are asking that the “Section VI” which came together to protect student athletes from having opportunities stripped from them, join our growing coalition of parents and leaders looking to protect students from being fed into the school to prison pipeline. Whereas almost every school district in the state of NY was able to reduce their number of suspensions last year, Buffalo was the only district to increase its numbers. According to Buffalo Public School’s website BPS schools suspended over 2,200 students from Sept 2019 – Nov 2019. Of those students about 1,900 were Black and Hispanic. Parents leaders and faith leaders in Buffalo have been fighting on this issue for years. This year there is finally some traction with state policy. If the “Section VI” coalition can stay together and would use their power and influence on the issue of suspensions, we are confident that we can see lasting change just like we saw with the battle to keep BPS students included in Section VI Athletics.

The Heritage Corridor’s festivals, cultural events and artistic programming draw residents, national and international tourists, scholars and artists, writers, storytellers, poets, dancers, and actors to a thriving, community of historic urban scale. The Corridor contributes to the local and regional economy, the conservation of its cultural resources benefits and unites people and places.” -The Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor Vision Statement

hey called it the “game changer.” But the installation of the archway across Michigan Avenue to mark the African American Heritage Corridor last August – complete with African drumming and dancing was more like the cart before the horse. The corridor has awesome promise both historically and economically. But it has yet to realize even its most basic potential. In reality we have an archway and four historically relevant sites - and not much else. The incompetence has been staggering; marked by missed opportunities and very few gains over the years. The organization is currently in search of a new director. The question is will they bring in a person with the necessary skill set who will know what their product is, develop it, and how to sell it to the world as well as the local communities? Will they be able to provide the critical independent, experienced, visionary leadership that can stop the process of setting the district up for failure? -The Back StoryTwenty-seven years ago I gathered up a few people to begin a preservation movement in the Michigan Avenue Area. It was during a time when I was beginning to see a local preservation movement re-energize itself. As a grants administrator working with New York State Parks Historic Preservation office and the numerous preservations groups applications that came across my desk, I figured my community was a natural as well. At the time, with the limited history that I knew about the area, it was going to be a two for the price of one opportunity : the historic preservation and the history of the Underground Railroad. We had a tangible site and its history. In those days there was very little development going on in the Ellicott district. No commercial slip , Medical Corridor, Larkinville or loft development, no Airbnb, Rideshare, Tourism, Review sites etc. In essence we were ahead of our time; just a bunch of naive, young people with trying to do something positive. Our first project was to stabilize, restore and rehabilitate the historic Michigan Street Baptist Church. I wrote a grant for $100,000 through the Sacred Sites program. On the day Gov. Pataki came to the church to announce the NYS Freedom Trail Commission, the first of its kind in the nation to showcase Underground Rail Road sites across the state (legislation that I worked on with Deputy speaker Eve), we couldn’t announce the award because at the 11th hour the church congregation got cold feet and we had to return the money. There are many stories like this in the 27 year history of Michigan Street Heritage district. Over the years I stayed relevant, riding the tide of the information-age, learning in increments, as innovations came up that would make the whole heritage tourism industry adjust. To say that the Heritage district was not doing anything close to those trends is an understatement. They knew nothing of tourism or selling your product to the world. Case in point - any destination marketing organization or operator interested in bringing their groups into the district, would find it almost impossible to speak with someone in the Michigan Street Corridor. More often than not, they would work through me. The Nash House, for example, is not even on Trip Advisor and announced it would be open 2-3 days a week - something virtually unheard of in the industry! So why are we celebrating the seven principles of Kwanza as this community has done for the past 27 years? One should re-check that one principle called “Coopera-

tive Economics!” Fast forward to the real world the 21st century- we find ourselves in a global economy. Tourism figures in 2018 were $1.1 Trillion and domestically tourists spent $1,089 billion dollars. Every time to you see a Motor Coach that Coach generates over $100,000 in lodging, meals, admissions, shopping etc. The goal as it relates to the Michigan Street Heritage district should be how do we create a product and sell it globally? How do we get those motor coaches to stop and spend their dollars here? Over the 27 year period, my personal heritage tour company Motherland Connextions has figured it out in spite of a district in the dark. However companies like mine are only as good as what we have to offer. Then there is the African American market. Consider these facts: •The economic value of African American travelers has increased in 2018 to $63 billion from $48 billion in 2010. African American “cultural” travelers are the highest spenders, with an average per trip spend of $2,078 versus $1,345 for all African American travelers. •More than half reported that their most recent leisure destination was between 100-500 miles from home with Florida, New York City/New York, and Atlanta being top US destinations and Caribbean/Bahamas (38%) and Mexico (26%) mentioned as leading international destinations •Food and shopping are leading spend categories with nearly half of travelers spending on local and/or regional cuisine on their most recent leisure trip. Shopping continues to be a popular activity for vacationers, most often at malls (41%) and outlet malls (34%), but also downtown (28%). The above facts have not been even remotely considered here as it should have been with 27 years under our belts. I worked with the Greater Buffalo Convention & Visitor’s Bureau and Outside The Box who produced an African-American heritage tour guide for those inbound travelers coming in to spend at our shops, attractions and restaurants, yet none if any such attractions materialized in the Michigan Street Heritage Corridor district. Even back then it was a battle working with then Rich Gieger head of the CVB who stated we had no product and what we did have was too folksy. There are numerous potential employment opportunities in the Heritage Corridor for those in our community who can not only earn a livable wage but a very productive career. It’s happening all over the country and particularly in the South but not here because of our lack of activity, creativity and vision. We could be marketing our products steaming from movies like 12 Years a Slave and Harriet (Tubman); the proposal to put Tubman on the 20-dollar bill, and the 1619 Project - all of which tourists share as a motivation for their travels. And because I have been involved in the Underground Railroad movement nationally since its inception, I can attest to the very real encroachment of gentrification. People from outside of the community are building careers around their research of our historic treasures as evidence here last summer during a National Underground Railroad Conference. Very few African-Americans were present. In fact many local residents were not even aware it was going on. Then up in Niagara Falls the Niagara Falls Underground Heritage Center I worked so hard to establish, appointed a White woman to run the center. How does that happen? For the record the community in Niagara Falls is not the beneficiary. How can they be when the director doesn’t look like you? When I think back to all those years ago, it’s sad to realize that we have been our own worst enemy in regards to reaping the rewards of the positive impact of heritage tourism. I recall getting the contract for the National Baptist Convention in Buffalo. Motherland Connextions was the selected tour operator. I knew

very little then. I went to Rev. Bennett Smith and told him I thought the community needed to be more involved in order to reap the economic benefits of the national Conference. He told me in no uncertain terms that if the community locals wanted to be involved they needed to pay this big fee to be down in the basement of the Buffalo Convention Center. Very few if any did that. Then there were people offering their own personal cars to take people around (before ride sharing). In another instance a lady pulled up in front of the Convention Center and opened up the trunk of her car to show the banana pudding she was selling on Styrofoam plates to the conventioneers in the middle of July. In short, the whole community was forced to hack and it was embarrassing. I felt bad for my community. Suffice it to say, the lady selling banana pudding out of her trunk is where we are some 27-30 years later in Black Buffalo. The staggering incompetence continues. And a fully functional Heritage Corridor is still a dream deferred. Poll:8 In 10 Black Americans Say Trump Is ‘A Racist According to a new Washington Post-Ipsos poll published on Jan. 17, 2020, more than 8 in 10 Black Americans believe that President Donald Trump is a racist. The poll also finds that Black Americans believe the president has made racism a bigger issue in the country. The poll, which was conducted Jan. 2 to Jan. 8, found former Vice President Joe Biden is currently Black Democrats’ candidate of choice with the election 10 months away. Biden had the support of 48% of survey respondents, Bernie Sanders had 20% and Elizabeth Warren had 9%. Nine in 10 Blacks disapprove of the president’s job performance. Trump campaigns on having the lowest unemployment rate for Black Americans in the history of the country, but 77% of respondents of the poll give him “only some” or “hardly any” credit for the 5.5% Black unemployment rate. “I don’t think [Trump] has anything to do with unemployment among African Americans,” said Ethel Smith, a 72-yearold nanny who lives in Lithonia, Georgia, told The Washington Post. “I’ve always been a working poor person. That’s just who I am.” Sixty-five percent of Blacks surveyed said they feel optimistic about their lives “all” or “most of the time” but another 65% say it’s a bad time to be Black in America. Only 16% think that a ̆Black child born in the U.S. today has “a good opportunity to achieve a comfortable standard of living.” Dana Clark, a Black father of 11 in Ontario, California, tells all his children it’s possible to succeed in America.

appy New Year!!! Hope your resolutions are still intact. As “they” say some people had to be left behind and they couldn’t come with us for the rest of the ride. New Year; New Beginnings! So goes the story of the Raptors as well. Which I’m sure you all know by now. But this new season and this new year may bring about a first time All-Star as we’re about a month away from the game. With that being said though we’ll touch base on that at a later time. Now let’s get to the matter at hand. We’re starting the third week in January with the NBA season almost halfway over. Western New York’s NBA team along with that of our Canadian brethren, the Raptors are currently 25-13. A record ranking them fourth in the Eastern Conference and ninth in the NBA. Suffice it to say not many saw this coming. And now come the Spurs as Toronto is trying to nurse many players back to health. If you’re paying attention then you saw what I did there. The game this evening has a dinner start time. In layman’s terms, 6pm. The Spurs have come to town and with them some former Raptors. Most notably DeMar DeRozan. The relationship between Lowry and DeRozan is well chronicled. Best friends playing against each other. Bragging rights are definitely up for grabs. Toronto got off to a fast start leading 23-11 with 5:30 left in the first quarter. Pascal Siakam’s proliferating scoring was a major catalyst for this. At the end of the first quarter the score was 28-21. Siakam had poured in 12 points. Things were looking good. Then the second quarter started. Patty Mills was fouled shooting a three pointer. Which allowed San Antonio to cut into the lead with the clock standing still. For most of the quarter the Raptors held on to about a twelve point lead. But the arena seemed uneasy. As if everyone knew about the Spurs’ allure and DeRozan’s disposition. Surge Ibaka was called for his third foul with about 3:12 left in the quarter. Coach Nurse challenged the call and won. So the Raptors finished the half leading 51-43. At the start of the second half the “Prodigal Son” had 3 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Toronto was starting to pull away even causing Coach Popovich to call back to back timeouts after back to back three pointers that increased the Raptors’ lead to 70-53 with 6:41 left in the 3rd. In the Bible, the Meek Mill....Sorry! Wrong story. Let me try that again. In the Bible, the “Prodigal Son” is welcomed back by his father with open arms. DeMar DeRozan was welcomed back with another video tribute and the “ooouuus and aaas” at the 3:25 mark with a thunderous dunk over Chris Boucher plus the foul. Usually you can’t feel the exact turning point of a game. But even with Boucher returning the favor at other end of court for a dunk of his own. You knew! The intensity in the game had grown. The speed had changed and that dunk by DeRozan had awaken the Spurs team. The missed opportunities by the Raptors were now glaring. Toronto continued to lead at the end of the third though. Within the fourth quarter a bevy of defenses were on display. The Spurs switched to a 2-3 zone defense to slow down the Raptors. While Toronto played a man to man defense while also indulging in a triangle two defense to try to stop DeRozan. Needless to say to an avid sports enthusiast the break from the monotony was a nice treat. But it didn’t work out for the Raptors. Around 5:05 in the fourth quarter DeMar drove to the basket on consecutive possessions earning trips to the free throw line. San Antonio was able to take the lead and didn’t look back. They won the game with a score of 105-104.
