Petition Seeks Name Change of Rochester Airport to Frederick Douglass International A Change.org petition is seeking to rename the Greater Rochester International Airport to Frederick Douglass International Airport. Richard Glaser, a local financial advisor, started the petition. He said the name change would "deliver a message of hope to the world." Frederick Douglass, born into slavery as Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey in 1818, died February 20, Frederick Douglass 1895. He lived in Rochester from 1847 to 1872 and is buried in Rochester's historic Mount Hope Cemetery. He was a human rights leader, anti-slavery fighter, statesman, author and orator. On July 5, 1852, Douglass delivered his now famous speech at Rochester's Corinthian Hall in which the speaker told his audience in part, "This Fourth of July is yours, not mine… You may rejoice, I must mourn." -Additional TributeIn addition to the petition to rename the city’s airport after him, the state senate is currently considering a bill to rename the 570-mile NYS thruway after Douglass. The bill, known as SO8158, was introduced by State Senator Tim Kennedy, a Democrat from Buffalo. -Statue VandalizedOn a sadder note, a statue of Douglass in Rochester's Maplewood Park was vandalized recently on the anniversary of his famous 4th of July speech. The damaged statue was ripped off its base and dumped by the Genesee River gorge. Police are still investigating. Local leaders of the statue project said the monument, which could not be repaired, would be replaced. The Maplewood Park location includes Kelsey's Landing, where Douglass, Harriet Tubman, and others helped enslaved Africans escape to freedom along the Undergroud Railroad.
Rally to Complete Count” Press Conference Planned for July at MLK Park Influencers And Leaders From Communities Of Color To Advocate For Census Participation The Rochester-Monroe Complete Count Committee will host a socially distant press conference on Wednesday, July 22 at MLK park. A video will be produced documenting the gathering, with the goal of increasing community participation in the 2020 Census. The press conference theme, “Rally to Complete Count,” will reflect the current movement for racial equity in our community and will address why completing the questionnaire is a direct action to strengthen Black and Brown communities in Rochester. Local influencers and leaders in the Black, LatinX, and New Americans community will take the podium to talk about the consequences of their respective communities not completing the questionnaire. Speakers will also encourage the community to use social media to spread awareness about Rochester’s road to a complete count for the 2020 Census.

Meeks Victorious in Upset Primary Win: Kim Smith, In Impressive Race for 61st State Senate District, Loses by Only 141 Votes Desmond Meeks defeated Ernest Flagler in the race for the 137th State Assembly District in the June Primary. The seat was held for four decades by the David Gantt who transitioned July 1. Gantt had endorsed Flagler in the race. Because Meeks will not face a Republican candidate in November, the Primary victory basically determines that he will be the next State Assemblyman. Democrat Kim Smith, former Monroe County Health Department, almost pulled a major upset for the 61st State Senate District. She lost to Jacquie Berger by only 141 votes. Smith worked hard and used her skills in the race as an organizer for VOCAL-NY (Voices of Community Activists and Leaders) in Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse. She did well in places such as Genesee, where she was told she would fail because she is a woman and Black.

Price Courts - a major part of the history of Buffalo's Black community - from demolition during a press conference at the inner city development on June 25. Among those making impassioned pleas and sharing the development's amazing history and significance was (L-R starting 2nd from the left) Buffalo Niagara Executive Director Jessie Fisher, Dr. Henry Taylor, Sam Smith, Alfred Price, and Charley H. Council Panel Grills Police Leaders on Operations Prompted by the national outrage over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and also in response to anger over police treatment of the city’s Black and Brown residents, the Buffalo Common Council Police Oversight Committee held an emergency meeting for roughly three hours (on Zoom as well as posted to Facebook Live) where committee members grilled Police Commissioner Byron Lockwood and his command staff about how the Buffalo Police Department operates. Questions posed included how the internal affairs unit investigates complaints against a police officer, the role the police union has in instituting new policies, and who gives the orders to clear a crowd during a protest. More than 350 people logged on to watch with well over two thousand comments posted. Council Member Rasheed Wyatt said: “Buffalo likes to think of itself as the City of Good Neighbors But now they say we’re a city of racists people.”
Powerful New Legal Team Seeks Justice For Cariol Horne Cariol Horne is a former Buffalo Police Officer who was wrongfully terminated due to her bold action to intervene during a police chokehold delivered by then colleague, Lt. Greg Kwiatkowski, against an unarmed Black man named Neal Mack in 2006. Her actions were met with assault and injury by Lt. Kwiatkowski; in addition to loss of wages, employment, and pension after a 20- year career with the Buffalo Police Department. Through strong community and grassroots efforts, Cariol Horne, her story of injustice, and pursuit of restoration has garnered national coverage. The Justice for Cariol team is proud to announce her official legal representation as we move forward Cariol Horne demanding equity in this grave miscarriage of justice. Through an emerging effort with the Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN), Kirkland & Ellis LLP, and others to provide legal support around criminal justice cases, police accountability, and other social justice issues, Ms. Horne is now represented by Ronald Sullivan and Intisar Rabb of Harvard Law School, and W. Neil Eggleston and Kamran Bajwa, who lead a team from the law firm of Kirkland & Ellis LLP. Mr. Sullivan and his team helped secure victories for the families of Michael Brown and those wrongfully convicted, and Mr. Eggleston served as White House Counsel for President Obama and Associate Counsel for President Clinton. This team is eager to move forward with Ms. Horne’s case and see to it that justice is served.
Coalition Launches Voter Registration Drive

hen The Stop The Violence Coalition, together with the Buffalo Peacemakers, Back to Basics Ministries, FATHERS, MVP’S and the Y.O.U.T.H. (Youth Outreach Urban Talent Haven) organization hosted its 2020 Voter Registration Drive kick off July 1 on Ferry near Grider, it also marked the debut release of a single titled “Wake Up.” Created by Anthony Taylor, a member of the YO.U.T.H. organization, and an artist by the name of J. Script from Atlanta GA, “Wake Up” is designed to encourage and educate young people on the importance of coming together VOTE! If we don’t invest in the responsibility of our own equality of life immediately, what will our future hold?, said Y.O.U.T.H. member Kay Taylor. During the event as well as others to follow, she noted, there will be discussions on the importance of voting and “the encouragement of change and the importance of proper leadership within our communities.” Free black “Vote To Make A Difference” t-shirts were also given out at the opening event. Ms. Taylor pointed out that what most people may not know is that you can register to vote at the age of 16. However you cannot actually cast your ballot until you are 18. Murray Holman, executive Director of the Stop the Violence Coalition, said the registration drive effort was designed to take residents - especially all the young people who ae active in the Black Lives Matter protest movement - beyond the protest. “We Charge Genocide” Petition Submitted to the UN On December 17, 1951, Paul Robeson and William Patterson submitted a petition from the Civil Rights Congress (CRC) to the United Nations. Titled, “We Charge Genocide: The Crime of Government Against the Negro People.” The petition was signed by almost 100 U.S. intellectuals and activists. Robeson led a delegation to present the document at U.N. Headquarters in New York, while CRC Secretary Patterson delivered it to a U.N. meeting in Paris. W. E. B. Du Bois was scheduled to accompany Patterson to Paris, but the U.S. State Department prevented him from leaving the country. The book-length petition documented hundreds of lynching cases and other forms of brutality and discrimination evincing a clear pattern of government inaction and complicity. It charged that in the 85 years since the end of slavery more than 10,000 Blacks were known to have been lynched (an average of more than 100 per year), and that the full number can never be known because the murders are often unreported. The petition cited the UN’s definition of genocide: “Any intent to destroy, in whole or Continued Page 11

Dr. Camille Megna-Acolor National Parent Leader Western New York community mourns the loss of a passionate, young businesswoman in the field of dentistry

r. Camille Nicole Megna-Acolor, daughter of Attorney Ralph C. Megna and Dr. Elaine H. Megna, passed away on June 14, 2020. Dr. Camille Megna-Acolor completed her early education at Nardin Academy followed by City Honors High School. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology and Doctorate of Dental Surgery from Howard University. Dr. Megna-Acolor completed a General Practice Residency at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Washington, DC. Upon completion, she returned to her hometown of Buffalo, New York where she accepted a position with Aspen Dental. Dr. Megna-Acolor had a strong entrepreneurial spirit and followed in her mother’s footsteps by opening a dental office in 2017. Partnering with a fellow classmate from Howard University, New Era Dental was launched. The City of Buffalo declared March 25, 2017 “New Era Day.” A historic milestone in the City of Buffalo, the opening of New Era Dental broke barriers as the youngest, African-American woman owned and operated dental practice. Dr. Camille Megna-Acolor acquired and operated a second office, Bailey Dental, from her mentor, Dr. Edmund Thomas. Her patient base continually expanded and attributed to her reputation for having a gentle touch and performing excellent work. She always made sure to provide dental care for patients who would not otherwise have access. Every patient was greeted with appreciation and her infectious smile. Dr. Camille Megna-Acolor was a founding member of The Future Dentists Mentoring Committee, an organization providing guidance to young African-American and minority students interested in pursuing careers in the field of dentistry. She was a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Dr. Megna-Acolor was passionate about motivating Buffalo’s youth, and her example will live on for many

Discusses School Reopening and Racial Justice in Schools Across the country the debate is raging on about what school reopening should look like in the fall. Unfortunately, authentic parent voices are missing from the conversation. Duncan Kirkwood, who was recently quoted in the NY Times around school reopening, has been organizing parents across the country in an effort to lift parent voices to every level of decision making. After co-leading a statewide parent call in NY with parents, NY state lawmakers and education policymakers, Duncan is looking forward towards a national parent call on July 30 Duncan Kirkwood to lift up parent’s prerequisites for school reopening. Kirkwood has been a long time parent leader and racial justice advocate and has the unique background to be able to discuss educational equity, school reopening and the resilience it is going to take to fix the broken education system. Duncan is available for interviews on school reopening, racial justice and education related matters. An authentic parent’s prospective should be standard for any discussion on school reopening. “Every policy decision at every level of government should be driven by authentic parent voices in regards to school reopening," said Kirkwood. "We as parents refuse to go back to a time where decisions are made that directly affect our children without any significant input.”

Book Alert: "When Half Your Heart Dies" A Mother's Heartbreak and Struggle to Remain Faithful A retired bookkeeper from Buffalo, NY and author of two books, Gloria Clark lived a happy, fruitful life being the mother of two sons and the grandmother of two granddaughters until the summer of 2000 when her youngest son Darian was shot and killed as he and friends were leaving a Social Club in Buffalo. Her son’s death inspired her book entitled When Half of Your Heart Dies and was her first attempt at writing. Tina Washington-Abubeker is Honored, Excited and Ready to Lead
T
he Board of Directors of the AfricanAmerican Cultural Center announced recently that it has selected a new Executive Director and welcomes Tina Washington-Abubeker to the agency. “I am honored and excited to serve an agency that has been an anchor for the Black community and the City of Buffalo for the last 57 years and I envision the African American Cultural Center reaching great heights; carrying on the work and honoring the legacy of ancestors who have come before us and paved the way,” said Ms. Washington-Abubeker. She was referring to the late Agnes Bain, beloved “keeper of the culture” who served as Executive Director for the last 41 years; long time Board member Sis. Gwen “Iyetta” Neal, and arts patron Lorna C. Hill. “I am committed to giving back and making a difference,” she continued. “We were often told by my late father (community worker William H.T. Washington, Jr.), ‘to whom much is given, much is expected.’ " Ms. Washington- Abubeker’s position is effective immediately. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the Syracuse University Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Policy, a Juris Doctorate from the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Law (UB), and she is ABD for a Doctor of Philosophy from the State University of New York at Buffalo in Global Gender Studies. Her academic studies are diverse and include African and African-American history, diaspora, race, economic, and social justice. She has taught at UB as both an adjunct faculty and teaching assistant. Washington-Abubeker is widely travelled and has studied at Addis Ababa University, in Ethiopia. Although her family originates from the Carolinas, she is a daughter of this community with roots

ing it to the Streets, Jazz and Gospel Festivals. Challenger: Speaking of the annual Pine Grill Reunion…. In light of the pandemic, will there be a Reunion this year ? Washington- Abubeker: Yes…we will host our annual Pine Grill Jazz Reunion this year but it will be a virtual Pine Grill Reunion with a live streamed web concert featuring local bands streamed live on Zoom, Facebook, and Instagram. The theme is ‘Coming to You Live with Jazz & Jive.’ Although it will not be held in Martin Luther King Jr. Park, it will still be live jazz and it will still be a reunion - just virtual - on both Sundays August 2 and 9! Challenger : what are your short-range plans for the center? Washington-Abubeker: We are currently working on several projects. Washington-Abubeker: With the expansion in size, we will be able to serve the community at an even greater capacity allowing for more participants in all components. For example, we will have classrooms for teaching, after school, and summer programs. There will be both interactive and display museums with archival facilities for the preservation of Pan African and Diaspora artifacts, relics and historical memorabilia. A larger Paul Roberson Theater can fit more patrons and expand the theatrical experience by having classrooms for teaching acting. The dance & drumming component will have a venue to teach and perform onsite. We can also provide for other kinds of performances and include other genres of the Arts such as an African American visual art gallery. Finally, I envision the AACC campus having facilities to host both indoor and outdoor concerts and a courtyard. By being situated in our current location between Frank Merriweather Library/cultural base of Jefferson Avenue and the historical Michigan Corridor/ Underground Railroad, the African American Cultural Center Campus will be another treasure to complement the historical sites that we already cherish in the City of Buffalo, further solidifying our designation as one of the top venues for African/ African American history and culture. Challenger: How Do You Think Your Background Best Prepares You To Head The Center? Washington-Abubeker: I feel as though I have been
groomed for this position by people who have invested in me. From growing up as an adolescent at Agape AME church on Northland Avenue to participating in the Miss Young, Gifted, and Black pageant. While in college, I volunteered with the North Region Black Political Caucus doing community service with my surrogate grandmother Hazel Franks and working on campaigns for the Honorable Hugh B. Scott, the Honorable Rose H. Sconiers, and the Honorable Barbara Howe who served as my mentors. In my final year at Syracuse University, I had the privilege of serving as a legislative intern in Albany for the former Deputy Speaker of the New York Assembly, Arthur O. Eve. I also volunteered with my mother, Randi Washington-Massey when she worked as a Legislative Assistant to the former Masten District Councilman David A. Collins. As a Court Liaison for Women for Human Rights and Dignity, Inc. I honed organizational abilities. While working as a Community Organizer for Citizen Action and as the Director of the Buffalo Provider Network I also acquired knowledge of the programmatic and financial operations of community organizations. 9-Year Old Nariya White is Buffalo’s Newest Author At just 9 years old Nariya White has written and published her first book, “Slimetastic Day.” Nariya, who is going into the 5th grade this year, attends Buffalo United Charter School. She wanted to write a book to inspire young girls after feeling discouraged at school. Nariya enjoys dancing, reading, spending time with her family and cheerleading. Nariya and her family hope everyone that buys her book feels encouraged. Her book is available on Amazon, which is described as follows: “A Slimetastic Day is a book about encouragement. would like to thank everyone who participated in the motorcade. It was a great surprise. My daughter, Sharon Doyle and my granddaughter Somalia organized it. It was truly amazing! As far as the Honorary Doctorate, I was nominated by a former student who I taught in the second grade, Crystal J. Rodriguez, Esq. who is now the Chief of Staff for the President of Buffalo State College - Dr. Katherine Conway-Turner. I was scheduled to be part of the Commencement for Buffalo State College on May 16, but the graduation was postponed due to COVID-19. So my daughter and granddaughter decided to do something to honor me in the community. And the community turned out in full fore!! I was in my house and I heard the drums with Ras Jomo and company before I saw the Motorcade. It was amazing to see all of my friends coming together to show such love and respect. May 16th was one for the history books. The following are the words from the letter that I received from the office of the president of Buffalo State: "On behalf of the SUNY Board

Stop With The All Lives Matter Rhetoric
I
am tired of hearing “All Lives Matter” in the same sentence with “Black Lives Matter.” Such a statement is proof that many people, including some of my own people, still just don’t get it. My comment is about Black Lives Matter versus All Lives Matter. Why say Black Lives Matter when All Lives should matter? Because historically it has been demonstrated that Black Lives are not considered equal in value to non-Black Lives. White Lives have always mattered when it comes to dispensing justice, the distribution of wealth, opportunity, mobility, healthcare, housing, access to services, serving in the Armed Forces - this list can go on and on. At no time, in the history of this country, have Black lives been held in the same esteem as non-Black lives.
We have constantly been chronicled as a race of people who are inferior to non-Black people (White people). Note the recent lynching of Black Men and authorities falsifying sui-
BLACK HISTORY: "GENOCIDE" continued in part, a national, racial, or religious group is genocide.” The petition concluded therefore, that …the oppressed Negro citizens of the United States, segregated, discriminated against, and long the target of violence, suffer from genocide as the result of the consistent, conscious, unified policies of every branch of government. If the General Assembly acts as the conscience of mankind and therefore acts favorably on our petition, it will have served the cause of peace. With the Cold War raging, the U.S. government maneuvered to prevent the United Nations from formally debating or even considering the charges brought in the petition. Working behind the scenes, they were able to prevent any discussion of the petition by the U.N. Commission on Human Rights. When one of the American delegates to the U.N. criticized William Patterson for “attacking your government,” Patterson replied, “It’s your government. It’s my country. I am fighting to save my country’s democratic principles.” The U.S. corporate media gave scant coverage to the petition or the crimes it documents. The CRC is labeled a “Communist front organization,” and the few Government officials who comment on the petition describe it as “Communist propaganda.” Elsewhere in the world, however, it was well received and extensively covered in the press. In Europe, Africa, and Asia where the U.S. is competing against the Soviet Union and China for political influence, the document weakens American “Free World” claims and its assertion of global moral leadership, particularly among nonwhite peoples struggling against colonial rule. As the Black Freedom Movement gathered strength in the following years, Cold War geo-politics influenced Washington’s reaction to major events like the Sit-ins, Freedom Rides, ‘Ole Miss, and so on. On his return to the U.S, Patterson’s passport was seized by the State Department so he could no longer speak to foreign audiences about the denial of human rights endured by African Americans and other people of color. Robeson too was prevented from leaving the country. They and other CRC leaders were harassed and persecuted by the FBI and other federal agencies for the rest of their lives. Note the constant uncovering and publicizing of crimes against Black people that went unnoticed and un-punished for months and months until now when the Black Lives Matter movement is bearing down on city after city demanding justice for those who suffered and in some case died at the hands of their local law enforcement officers.

This disregard for Black lives is evidenced LAWSON by this nation's obvious inability to acknowledge the long-term and never-ending impact of slavery on our culture and overall society; the on-going and perpetual downplaying or outright omission of the true contributions of Black Americans to the success and economic achievement of this nation as a (now faltering) world power; and the on-going glorification of myths and stereotypes about Black culture - to the extent that some Black folks have fallen into the chasm of that mythology and have begun to believe it about themselves. This treachery perpetrated against Blacks in America is not limited to only Black Americans, but also managed to successfully dismantle an entire nation of Red Americans, the First Nations people, the indigenous communities who lived here in harmony with nature long before European settlers showed up. They have been so displaced and diminished as a people they are now an endangered species. More hard evidence the ideology of All Lives Matter really is not true in the eyes of White America. Black Lives Matter is in response to the chronic assessment by White America that Black Lives only Matter . . . to a point and . . . only if it is convenient . . . and only if it doesn't interfere with White America's value system that positions them at the controlling peak of all things that determine success and achievement. To be clear, the so-called Contract with America was never meant to apply to "Americans" that did not conform with the idealized White American – those who are of Anglo descent, Christian, and heterosexual. Education, gender, and economics is a subset of distinction applied to create a class system. Black, Brown, and Red people were/are absolutely excluded, and likely not even given consideration when the Contract with America was being developed. To get to the place where All Lives Matter, this country needs to acknowledge and accept the truth about White Privilege in other words, White Lives have always mattered, hence the reason why all of our social systems are built around that premise to the exclusion of others - has nothing to do with wealth, education, or geography - just skin color. Black Lives Matter is an effort by a race of people to finally achieve equal recognition in human value and to be respected, regarded, and treated as such. Hurray to the thousands of young people, of every color, who have taken to the streets and are making their voices heard. Remember, our Republic was born out of a revolution! I would like to believe, I hope and I pray, there are enough White Americans who are abolitionists and freedom fighters who understand this and are willing to stand with us in the quest for justice and equality - - at last. Extended Closing of Canadian Border Disappointing But No Surprise
Dear Editor: It is disappointing but no surprise to see the Northern Border remain closed for another 30 days. With no leadership from President Trump to address the pandemic, cases in the United States are spiking and as a result United States citizens are not welcome in several countries around the globe, including many of our allies. The President’s failed management, and frankly complete lack of attention to the science and reality before us, is costing the U.S. more than economic and diplomatic losses. It is costing American lives. The United States has just 4.25% of the world’s population but our citizens, friends, neighbors and family members now represent at 23.6% of the world’s deaths due to COVID. While the Northern Border remains closed, the United States and Canada should be developing a plan that lays out what continued, nuanced management of the border during a prolonged pandemic will look like. They were to lead my generation into the next era of hip hop. I say this to discuss a different scenario that has come about within the college basketball world. Before I continue I want to wish you all good health. We’re in a climate where a lot of different leaders are coming about. The younger generations within our communities have realized their voice and their power as they unite to make changes. Using the tool of social media that can be viewed around the world they have been able to organize to bring these changes to fruition. Making many demands from the arrest of police, new laws and the removal of the Confederate symbol on a state flag are just a few accomplished goals that this youth movement has already attained. Now where I come in is do to this buzz that has begun within the athletes. More specifically a possible future NBA athlete. Possible??? How do I know that? Can I tell the future now? Do I have NBA executives listed in my contact list. No! But this young brother does have a cousin in the NBA. I’m speaking of Makur Maker whose cousin Thon Maker already plays in the NBA. Makur who is a five star basketball athlete is a highly ranked high school player who has committed to play at Howard University. Howard University is what’s known as a HBCU(Historically Black Colleges and Universities). Why is this important? HBCUs are not regarded as landing places for such stars to touch down. Not when they’re being courted by such schools as Memphis, UCLA and Kentucky to name a few. But Maker has chosen to take the lead and possibly change the tide and perception of HBCU’s within athletics. The impact of this move is mind blowing and the boom is being felt throughout the college basketball world as others have vowed to take a good look at HBCU’s before making their decisions. It’s also a good look for mid major college basketball programs. They are hoping that this filters down and higher caliber athletes start to realize that you can have success at smaller schools if you’re willing to put in the work and lead by example.

No More Racist “Redskins” On Monday, under pressure from corporate sponsors, the NFL’s Washington Redskins announced that it would drop its logo and “Redskins” from its name that had long been considered a racial slur. FedEx, for example, which pays about $8 million a year for the naming rights to the Washington team’s stadium in Landover, Md., said this month that it would back out of the deal if the team’s name was not changed. The team has long been in the spotlight, in part because of its checkered racial past.. The team’s founder George Preston Marshall named the team the Redskins, a racist insult to Native Americans, which he considered a nod to bravery. 150 Minneapolis Cops File Disability Claims for PTSD, Which They Attribute to George Floyd Protests The Washington Post reports, 150 police officers from the Minneapolis Police Department have started the process of filing disability claims that will allow them to leave the force and still receive pay, on the basis that they are suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The cause of their newfound disability? The protests against George Floyd’s gruesome killing by Minneapolis police. From The Washington Post: Half of those officers are no longer on the job because they have exhibited symptoms of PTSD, according to Ron Meuser Jr., a Twin Cities personal injury attorney who is representing the officers. The other half likely will quit working in coming days as they formalize disability claims with the city, Meuser said Friday. While law enforcement is a high-stress career, the last two months in Minneapolis have pushed many officers to their breaking point,” Meuser said.

Buffalo Sewer to Recognize Juneteenth as a Paid Holiday Beginning in 2021 The Buffalo Sewer Authority (BSA) Board of Directors unanimously declared June 19th as a paid holiday for Buffalo Sewer Employees. 154 years ago, Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger of the Union Army notified the enslaved Africans of Galveston, Texas of their freedom on June Mr. Bellamy Mr. Foy 19, 1865. It would take almost another year before the passage of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting citizenship and equal protection under the law to all people born or naturalized in the United States. “I am proud to announce that June 19th will be recognized as a paid holiday for Buffalo Sewer Authority employees and I hope that we all take this day to educate, connect, and reflect on the Black experience in America. In the years since the end of slavery a lot of progress has been made, but there is still a long way to go. It is the hope of the Buffalo Sewer Authority that this official recognition of Juneteenth as a holiday can play a small role in honoring all members of our community who fight for equality.” said Herbert L. Bellamy, Chairman of Buffalo Sewer Board of Directors. On June 17, 2020 New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed an executive order making Juneteenth a holiday for state employees and will propose legislation to make it an official state holiday in 2021. On June 19, 2020 Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown declared that Buffalo will commemorate the end of slavery on June 19th each year in order to focus on racial equality and acknowledge the history of slavery in the United States. “The June 19th holiday has long been celebrated by members of the Black community, especially here in the City of Buffalo. I am honored to lead an organization who strives for excellence in equity across the board. As an organization we have participated in Juneteenth of Buffalo festival activities annually and I am glad that our Board of directors took the initiative to ensure that Juneteenth would be paid holiday of reflection that highlights the importance of Black history in the City of Buffalo and the Country,”

A successful "Move for Justice" Rally for the Buffalo 3 took place on John Walker's 61s birthday last Friday, July 10 in font of 25 Delaware. Walker (top left) and Darryl A. Boyd (top right) are fighting to have their names and the name of the late Darryn Gibson exonerated for a crime they did not commit. A flyer distributed by supporters Betty Jean Grant and Sherry Sherrill of We Are Women Warriors, quoted Walker as declares: “We are not guilty of the heinous crime we were convicted of and we need the support of our community to get the wrongful indictment overturned and vacated. In 1977 we were falsely accused and wrongly convicted of murder. Tomorrow, this could happen to you or someone you love.” Also on hand to show support was Sam Radford, Cariol Horne, and a host of others. In a recent development Council President Darius Pridgen and retired City Court Judge James McLeod, are calling on District Attorney John J. Flynn to take a new look at the decades-old murder case.
