WORK IT
When Max Sinsteden launched his namesake firm in 2024, he knew his office couldn’t be just another workspace. It had to feel like home. “We’re in the business of making homes,” he says, “so it felt important that the space reflects that.”

After a long search for his interior design firm’s New York office, Max Sinsteden found a gem on Madison Avenue: a Beaux-Arts building with tall ceilings, original moldings, and luminous windows. The walls were another matter—caked in layers of chipping white paint. Rather than strip them, he called in decorative painters Chris and Nick Loew to create a trompe l’oeil finish mimicking BarkSkin, a clever solution that looks like limestone.
With a knack for turning challenges to his advantage, Sinsteden also hired artist Chris Pearson to paint over the office’s orange-yellow floors with a custom terrazzo pattern that now defines the foyer. “It brings me joy every single time I walk through the door.” Faux paneling in Christian Bérard-inspired greens adds charm and covers the team’s workspace walls, while a fireplace lends a cozy feel to Sinsteden’s office.

Organization meets aesthetics in every corner. Projectspecific tote bags double as storage and décor. A central round table—originally commissioned by Albert Hadley and now lacquered in a high-gloss finish by Peter Salomonski— serves as conference hub and design lab. The art is equally considered. Hung from picture rails using Robert Kime chain, the collection can shift without harming the walls.

“Even when a client’s style is different from mine, they connect with the spirit of the space,” Sinsteden says. His goal? A workplace that feels not just functional, but deeply personal. “The light is beautiful. The ceilings are generous. But most of all, it feels welcoming,” he says. “And that’s what great design should do.”

Chalet

Chic

THIS IS NOT YOUR MINIMALIST MOUNTAIN ESCAPE. INTERIOR DESIGNER MARK D. SIKES PROVES HIS TALENT FOR LAYERING, DRAWING ON THE ROMANCE OF SWISS CHALETS AND THE ARCHITECTURE OF ADIRONDACK LODGES TO CRAFT A STORYBOOK SUN VALLEY RETREAT.
For a young family seeking to remake their Sun Valley mountain home, working with Los Angeles designer Mark D. Sikes was the perfect way to escape clichés. His vision of an alpine fantasy is less log cabin, more “ski chalet in St. Moritz, with layers and layers of French fabrics.”

The house, a mid-century Adironack-style lodge, came with just the right amount of wood-paneled patina. “It was already so charming,” says Sikes. “Our job was to make it sing.” He layered Pierre Frey fabrics— including chintzes, weaves, embroideries, and plenty of passamenterie—with the ease of someone who knows their way around a pom-pom fringe.

Wallpaper softens the bedrooms, baths, and hallways. “It felt necessary to balance out all of the wood in the main living areas,” says Sikes. There’s a custom embroidered trim around a sitting room doorway, sewn together from leftover fabric. Sikes is the rare designer with a full archive of his own patterns, fabrics, and trims to draw on—his collections with Schumacher offer endless options.
Layered patterns also hide wear and tear, a necessity in any ski lodge. A clever mix of vintage finds, performance solids, and printed upholstery ensure the house can handle muddy boots and après-ski drinks with equal grace.

When asked for his favorite part of the project, Sikes doesn’t hesitate: “The install. It was snowing—we were in a real-life snow globe.” Add that to the magic of a designer who can turn a rustic lodge into an alpine jewel box, and you’ve got a chic new mode of mountain living.

ADD AN ELEMENT OF FUN Mix in pieces from around your house with the flowers and candles—an interesting object from a bookshelf, greenery from your garden, or colorful fruit and vegetables from the fridge. Have fun and surprise your guests!

RAISE THE BAR, BEAUTIFULLY
I’m a big fan of repurposing a beautiful piece of furniture to be used as the bar. A table with shelves below can be used with baskets to store bottles. Trays are another great way to organize a bar while adding color. No matter what your setup is, be sure that guests can help themselves.
GLOW WITH THE FLOW
It’s hard to go wrong with a lot of candlelight. Mix tall tapers with low votives and vessels at different heights. It creates a lovely glow and makes the table—and your guests— look pretty.
KEEP FLOWERS LOW AND LOVELY
I always make sure the arrangements on the table (and the floral scents) are low. There’s nothing worse than trying to talk to someone across the table and fighting with the flowers.
