In 1935, when Margaret Chadwick founded what would become the Chadwick Seaside School in San Pedro, California, she envisioned an institution where all children could thrive within an experiential, coeducational and character-based learning environment. During the ensuing years, this philosophy was embraced by likeminded benefactors, allowing her vision to grow into the Chadwick School we now know.
ROOTED IN THE PAST, THRIVING IN THE PRESENT, IMAGINING THE FUTURE.
An enduring legacy of philanthropic support has been crucial to the success of Chadwick School. Transformative gifts of land and buildings from generous donors established Chadwick’s campus and enabled the school to thrive. Today, the Annual Fund, along with endowed funds, as well as major and planned gifts, augment our current students’ opportunities and provide resources for the future.
As we near our 90th year, Margaret Chadwick’s influence still enriches everyone it touches, from the students at the campuses of Chadwick School in Palos Verdes and Chadwick International in Songdo, South Korea, to the thousands of Chadwick alumni worldwide. Her philosophy guides us all as we endeavor “to discover and develop the special gifts which each individual possesses.”
To you — our alumni, parents, trustees, alumni parents, grandparents, faculty and staff, as well as our philanthropic friends — we are grateful for your enduring commitment to Chadwick’s Mission and our students. Your generous gifts of yourselves, your time and your resources help Chadwick School to continue to provide a world-class education based upon Margaret Chadwick’s vision and philosophy. These gifts enrich our students and the world.
We thank you for all you have done, and continue to do, for our students as well as the entire Chadwick community.
Sincerely,
Director of Institutional Advancement
Dear Chadwick Community,
One of the highlights of my second year as Head of School was witnessing the living, breathing, supportive spirit of this community. Whether it was Upper School Community Connections, Village School leadership activities, relief efforts for those affected by the January fires, the Middle School Chadwick Immersion Program Week or the 90th Anniversary Spring Gala, our community consistently came together for the benefit of our students.
FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Some of the many highlights from the 2024-25 school year include:
• College Acceptances: The 82 members of our Class of 2025 received 542 offers of admission from 188 different colleges and universities and are attending 51 different institutions. These include many of the most selective research universities, liberal arts colleges, flagship state universities, engineering institutes and top-performing colleges in the visual arts.
• Athletic Success: Chadwick celebrated Prep League Championships for three teams: Girls Golf, Boys Golf and Girls Cross-Country. Overall, 14 out of 21 Chadwick teams advanced to the CIF playoffs, including a CIF-SS Finals appearance by Boys Soccer for the first time since the 1997-98 season.
• Global Citizenship: Chadwick students strengthened their global awareness and skills through experiential programs in Costa Rica, Canada, Ecuador, the United Kingdom, Japan, Morocco, New Zealand, South Korea and Spain. These trips were geared toward scientific research, immersive language learning, outdoor exploration and collaboration with Chadwick International in South Korea.
• MacFarlane Leadership Scholarship Program Expansion: Thanks to an additional $3.6 million investment from Ruth and Roger MacFarlane, Chadwick is opening new doors for incoming ninth graders. This generosity allows us to add four additional MacFarlane Leadership Scholars by the year 2030, up from 12 scholars today — welcoming additional

students whose academic achievements, integrity and potential for leadership merit investment and encouragement.
• Annual Fund Impact: Annual Fund contributions reached $1.8 million this year, reflecting donations from 1,090 alumni, parents, trustees, grandparents, alumni parents, faculty and staff. These contributions strengthen every student’s daily experience by providing increased resources for classroom enhancements; science, athletics and music equipment; faculty salaries and benefits; Outdoor Education courses; and much more.
• Fundraising Achievements: Our 90th Anniversary Spring Gala, "The One Where We Celebrated 90 Years," raised $330,000. Of this, $225,000 was allocated to purchase an Airstream Mobile Booster Club Merchandise Store. Additionally, the 2024 Chadwick Golf Tournament raised $98,568 to support the school’s operating budget and the Athletic Conference Room.
There are countless other ways we strengthened our community this year. Most importantly, our students made new friends, experienced new perspectives, developed new knowledge and passions and found new ways to contribute to their communities. We take pride in knowing that together we will continue to grow.
Sincerely,
Jessica Donovan Head of School

ROOTED IN THE PAST
For nearly 90 years, Chadwick School's roots have deepened and strengthened, with Margaret Chadwick's mission inspiring and empowering generations of students and their families. What began in Margaret Chadwick's San Pedro home quickly grew as her educational vision resonated with and inspired families throughout the region.
Frank Vanderlip, a real estate developer impressed by Mrs. Chadwick's approach, donated land in 1937, leading to the opening of our beautiful campus on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in 1938.
The Roessler family's generous contribution enabled the construction of the first buildings on campus. Since then, generations of families have joined in philanthropic partnership through gifts to annual operations, capital projects, and in support of the endowment, which has remained consistently strong for decades.
Past
“Chadwick has been a part of my life on and off since I was four, having attended from kindergarten through fourth grade, then returning in the early 2000s to teach summer classes, and finally settling into my current role as Education Technology Specialist in 2014. As my role has evolved, I cherish my part in helping students succeed in school now while preparing them to enter a world outside of Chadwick, where they can utilize their technical and digital skills to handle the physical, psychological and emotional demands of using technology in our world.”
RAENA BOCKOFF HAWKINS
Education Technology Specialist 18 years at Chadwick
“I have said to many that ‘Teaching at Chadwick is a privilege and an honor, as this community is unlike any other!’ I tell my students, I wish I had the opportunity to go to Chadwick when I was younger, so that I would have experienced all the amazing opportunities Chadwick has to offer!”
JD KING First-Grade Teacher and Dean of Faculty and Staff

RECOGNIZING ANNUAL GIVING
All gifts to Chadwick School are greatly appreciated. Because annual giving contributions support Chadwick’s current operations and highest-priority needs each year, special recognition is afforded to donors who directly support Chadwick’s Annual Fund or Delphinus Operating Fund for Financial Aid, or who make restricted annual gifts to current operations. Recognition levels are determined by the total dollar amount of gifts, including employer matching gifts.
Contributions to sponsor or underwrite events or to support parent organizations are not direct contributions to current operations and, therefore, are not included in Annual Giving recognition. Such contributions are recognized separately at the events and on pages 65 and 68. Gifts to endowed funds, including the general endowment, support the long-term growth of the school rather than current operations and are honored separately on pages 59 through 61.
In addition, this list celebrates consecutive years of giving by individuals. It is a testament to the loyalty and commitment of the Chadwick community that so many consistently support the school over multiple years.
As with all our efforts to thank and recognize donors, every attempt has been made to ensure the accuracy of our information. If your records differ from ours, please contact the Advancement Office so we can update our files.
Contributions from donors recognized here represent more than $1.8 million in Annual Giving to Chadwick in 2024-25.
We are deeply grateful to all members of the Chadwick community who include Annual Giving to Chadwick in their philanthropic plans each year. Thank you!

Chadwick School provides an environment that consistently nurtures and inspires its students, offering them the tools and the knowledge to thrive.
THRIVING IN THE PRESENT
Present
Each year, this is accomplished by working in conjunction with Chadwick School’s Annual Fund, bridging the gap between tuition income and the cost of providing an exceptional education. The Annual Fund benefits students and faculty alike by utilizing philanthropic gifts from the extended Chadwick community to expand essential operating funds.
In the area of STEM, Chadwick has been designated a USA Blue School by the National Marine Educators Association, acknowledging its work with AltaSea at the Port of Los Angeles to integrate ocean learning into the curriculum and foster an ocean-literate society. Also, Chadwick’s Upper School Robotics Team competed at the VEX Robotics World Championship, winning eight out of the 11 qualification matches and finishing 27th among the 800 teams present at the event.
These are just a few of the experiences that were supported by the Annual Fund this year. From world-class academics to Visual and Performing Arts, from Athletics to Community Service and Outdoor Education and beyond, the commitment from our philanthropic community supports and celebrates all of our students, from K-12, and enables everyone to continue to thrive.
“Each year, the generosity shown toward Chadwick's Annual Fund creates new opportunities for our students and helps cultivate a learning environment where our entire community can thrive.”

All monies raised through the Chadwick Annual Fund are used to support the operating budget in the same academic year that they are contributed.
ANNUAL FUND
Thanks to the generosity of Annual Fund donors, Chadwick students enjoy enhanced opportunities in all areas of campus life and learning. We thank the following 2024-25 Annual Fund donors for their commitment to making every academic and co-curricular program at Chadwick outstanding for our students.
Chadwick relies on a committed group of volunteers to reach out to members of our community for their support of the Annual Fund. These volunteers write letters, make phone calls, send texts and assist with planning to help raise funds to support Chadwick’s students, faculty and programs. We are deeply grateful for their hard work, leadership and gifts of time to the school.

IMAGINING THE FUTURE
While Chadwick School always remains focused on providing an exceptional and fulfilling education for its current students, the leadership and faculty also endeavor to imagine what the future will hold. How will it inspire and challenge us, and how can our students, as well as the Chadwick community, best be ready to thrive within it?
Future
The MacFarlane Scholars Program was created with this vision in mind. This need-based scholarship for incoming ninth graders helps to prepare students for the future by emphasizing academic achievement, leadership potential and character. Funded by the MacFarlane family, this initiative provides tuition assistance and includes a dedicated leadership class that meets throughout the students’ time in the Upper School. This year, Chadwick received a $3.6 million planned gift to enhance the program, which will add four new scholars in the coming years.
The ongoing commitment of Chadwick’s philanthropic supporters, particularly those who have established endowments, ensures that Chadwick and its Mission will continue in the decades ahead, always imagining what that future will look like, and how best to prepare for success within it.
“There are so many ways that being a MacFarlane Scholar has prepared me for my next chapter after Chadwick. Traveling around the world, I learned what it meant to take the time to understand different cultures and how learning about others can help me fully understand myself. I plan to use the leadership and people skills that I developed in the MacFarlane Scholarship Program to build long-lasting relationships in college that will help me excel in whatever future I decide to pursue.”
Grade 12
“Being a MacFarlane Scholar has helped me prepare for my next chapter by teaching me how to lead with purpose, think with an open mind and collaborate effectively. Through planning and participating in experiences connected to global United Nations sustainability goals, I’ve learned to connect local and international perspectives and approach challenges with empathy and critical thinking. I believe these skills will be critical in guiding me through college and life, allowing me to develop into a strong global citizen.”
Grade 12

ANNUAL GIVING FROM ALUMNI
For many alumni, gifts to Chadwick are opportunities to pay tribute to the school that has helped them become who they are today. Many also honor classmates and teachers, celebrate reunions and recognize other special milestones with their giving.
We are extremely grateful to our alumni, whose giving ensures that the Chadwick experience remains consistently exceptional for every student in every year.

ENDOWMENT FUNDS
Endowment funds are financial assets that generate income through effective investment of the principal. Portions of this income are used to relieve the operating budget and, when substantial enough, to help minimize tuition increases. Contributions may be made to existing funds, or new funds may be established through major gifts. Endowment funds are frequently established to honor or remember someone of significance to the school. We are especially grateful to those donors who have established the endowment funds that provide security for our future.

PLANNED GIVING DONOR KRISTEN SULLIVAN BELL ’93
Kristen Sullivan Bell ’93 shared her experience at Chadwick School and her decision to make a planned gift to ensure Chadwick’s future. (Her remarks have been edited for length.)
Why Chadwick? How did you end up attending the school?
My parents had been introduced to Head of School Donald Leavenworth and were impressed by him. I remember him very fondly, myself. He taught our Latin class in sixth grade, which gave us an opportunity to get to know him in a smaller setting. (By the way, Latin is really coming in handy now that I’m getting certified as an Extension Master Gardener!)
What were you involved in as a student?
I started piano at age 3, so over the years I played in pep band, orchestra, and I accompanied all the choruses on campus. There was also photography, art, crafts and ceramics. For sports, I participated in soccer, tennis, and I spent a year as a cheerleader. I also joined Mrs. Terry’s debate team, and I even remember leading our class’ whale adoption in seventh grade.
Favorite memories of being a student at Chadwick?
It’s hard to narrow down 13 years of memories to just a handful, but some of my favorite memories are from the Outdoor Ed trips. It was common to bond differently with other students when we were taken completely out of our everyday environment, and I think we all have stories and recollections from those trips. Also, it was always a great day when Mrs. Chadwick would come to campus. She was like a rock star to us.
The teachers and faculty sure left us with a bunch of great memories. There are too many to mention, but I realize Mrs. Bullin was a pretty big influence on what was to become my favorite hobby as an adult (for those not familiar, she made most of the costumes for students, if not all of them). I’m an avid quilter and have been for the last 15 years. I love textiles and sewing in general and do it not only for fun, but for philanthropy. Currently, I’m very involved with “Quilts of Valor,” making quilts for veterans and active service members who have been touched by war.
What are your feelings toward Chadwick and what has the school meant to you after leaving?
People say that a college education is about teaching the student how to think, but I believe the faculty at Chadwick started that process with us very early on, and not just inside the classroom. With nature hikes in the canyon, exposure to a host of volunteer projects and philanthropies, assemblies with outstanding guest speakers, Outdoor Education trips, class trips, art, photography, shop, acting, music classes and sports of most varieties, we were constantly inspired. How many people can say they developed their own film in a darkroom originally set up by Ansel Adams?
Even though all of this was fantastic, it doesn’t speak to the bonds we created with each other and the faculty. I don’t think there are many 50-year-olds who can say they still are in touch with a boatload of the people they went to elementary school with and teachers they had from that era, but we can.
Why did you choose Chadwick in your estate plans?
Tuition is expensive and cost prohibitive. Enabling deserving students the opportunity to have the Chadwick experience seemed like the best possible gift I could leave behind. It has the potential to change the course of someone’s life in a permanent way. The hope is that the opportunity will open doors that would be otherwise closed.
FRANCIS J. AND FRANK L. JOHNSON LEGACY SOCIETY
The Frances J. and Frank L. Johnson Legacy Society was established in 1996 by Frank Johnson ’47 and Jacqueline Johnson Kehle ’56 in memory of their parents, Frances and Frank Johnson. It was created to acknowledge those members of the Chadwick community who provide for Chadwick through deferred gifts such as bequests, trusts or other planned gifts.
Thank you to all who have included Chadwick in your estate plans. Your support is greatly appreciated.

PARENT ORGANIZATIONS
Chadwick’s parent volunteers are an irreplaceable part of the school’s daily life. On any given day, volunteers can be found on campus, whether working in Leavenworth Library, transporting Community Service students, leading Spirit Day celebrations, planning events or cheering on student actors and musicians. They also support the school financially through their many successful fundraising events and programs. Thank you to all members of our Chadwick Parents Association, Friends of the Library, Chadwick Booster Club and Performing Arts Limelighters for all you do to create a welcoming and dynamic experience for our students and families.
CHADWICK PARENTS ASSOCIATION
The Chadwick Parents Association is an organization made up of parents of Chadwick students. Its purpose is to support Chadwick and the school community. The CPA coordinates Village Room Parents as well as Middle and Upper School Parent Representatives, helps parents become better acquainted with each other, raises funds in support of Chadwick, and helps foster and improve communications between parents and the school. The group organizes events and activities throughout the year to enhance the Chadwick experience for students and families. Numerous volunteers donate thousands of hours each year through the CPA.
In 2024-25, the CPA again organized the annual K–12 Family Fall Fest; the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Winter Holiday Party; the Multicultural Food Festival; and many other cherished parent events. This year’s Spring Event, “The One Where We Celebrated 90 Years,” raised $330,000, of which $225,000 was allocated to purchase an Airstream Mobile Chadwick Booster Club Merchandise Store. The airstream will travel to various on- and offcampus events, offering Chadwick merchandise and new items to further celebrate the school. Many thanks go out to co-chairs Lori Doty and Eunice Moon, the committee and all the volunteers and donors who contributed to the event’s success!
We are truly appreciative of the CPA for all the ways it strengthens our school community.

Global Opportunities
Chadwick provides a student exchange program with the Chadwick International campus in Songdo, South Korea, and through other international exchange programs. The CPA helps mobilize K-12 Chadwick host families for these exchange students. The student exchanges between campuses provide immersive, memorable experiences for families and students alike.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Chadwick proudly supports diversity, equity and inclusion in our community by encouraging the development and growth of parent affinity and allyship groups. These groups provide affirming spaces for families that share common identities and heritage with others in the Chadwick community. Each year, the affinity groups sponsor the DEI Winter Holiday Party for all Chadwick families. All Chadwick affinity groups are inclusive and welcoming to allies and other community members who wish to be supportive. Several groups are now operating under the Chadwick Parents Association, and plans are underway to develop more.
Visual Arts Squad
The Visual Arts Squad is comprised of K-12 parent volunteers who believe that a strong arts education is a sound investment in the overall development of our students. Members support the department throughout the year, donating their time and resources to enhance the program. Opportunities for involvement include assisting with hospitality at art shows, coordinating the department’s donations for the Spring Event, promoting programs and events, and more.

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY
The mission of the Friends of the Library (FOL) is to promote literacy and the love of reading in the Chadwick community and to support the Chadwick Leavenworth Library and librarians. In addition to providing financial resources, the FOL sponsors visiting authors and illustrators, manages the Book Talks, and organizes and implements the Village PALs (Parent Assistant to the Librarian) program. The FOL also works with Chadwick’s Community Service program on literacy projects in the broader Los Angeles community and organizes the much-anticipated Chadwick Book Fair. FOL members give countless volunteer hours each year to support and enhance library and literacy programs in grades K-12.
The FOL organized and continued popular initiatives for students and parents in 2024-25, including Bookworms, Storybook Heroes, a book swap, and the FOL Spring Event Book Club with Head of School Jessica Donovan. These programs work to bring Chadwick community members together to share the joy of a good book. The FOL also hosted three visiting authors this year. Emily Inouye Huey, winner of the Society of Children’s Books Writers and Illustrators’ Golden Kite Award, met with students in grades two through five to discuss her book, “Wat Kept Playing.” Author Maria von Lieshout sat with grades seven through nine students and delivered a presentation of her graphic novel, “Song of a Blackbird.” The final visiting author of the school year was brought about by a collaboration between FOL and the Chadwick Booster Club, inviting author and Olympian Betsy Mitchell to meet with parents to discuss her book, “More Than Medals,” over coffee.
Chadwick gratefully acknowledges the Friends of the Library for their support of the school and its library and literacy programs.
CHADWICK BOOSTER CLUB
The Booster Club’s purpose is to support and promote the athletic objectives and programs of Chadwick School, including sports teams in the Middle and Upper Schools and physical education in the Lower and Upper Village Schools. Throughout the year, the Booster Club promotes attendance at all sporting events, recruits sports representatives for every team, organizes Spirit Days, sells spirit wear and hosts the Chili Cook-Off. The Booster Club works hard to encourage the entire K-12 community to participate in Chadwick’s community-building athletic traditions.
In 2024-25, the Booster Club also made a generous gift of $13,725 in support of the school. Chadwick gratefully acknowledges the Booster Club for its impressive efforts on behalf of the school’s athletics program and sports teams. Go Dolphins!

CHADWICK LIMELIGHTERS
The Limelighters are a parent-led organization that supports and celebrates the Performing Arts at Chadwick School. Its mission is to collaborate with Performing Arts educators to enhance and elevate the creative experience across chorus, dance, improv, orchestra and theater. Through volunteer engagement and community partnership, they foster meaningful connections that strengthen the sense of community among students, families and faculty while honoring the joy and dedication behind every performance.
In collaboration with the Performing Arts Department, the Limelighters help to enhance the creative journey — from the first rehearsal to the final curtain. During the 2024-25 school year, they supported the Upper School productions of "Dracula" and "The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee," as well as the Middle School musical "Madagascar." Through volunteer efforts, event coordination and thoughtful touches such as meals, décor and receptions, they help transform performances into meaningful and memorable experiences.
At the heart of the Limelighters’ work is a shared belief in the power of the arts to bring people together. Within the Laverty Center for the Performing Arts, they stand beside students and educators as they create, collaborate and shine. The Limelighters aim to make each performance not only a celebration of talent, but also a reflection of the community spirit that makes Chadwick’s Performing Arts so special.
