COMMUNITY REMEMBERS CARMELLA SABAUGH
Sabaugh
MACOMB COUNTY — When Matthew Sabaugh was first appointed to the 37th Judicial District Court in Warren in 2008, his mom, Carmella Sabaugh, offered him some sound advice.
“The office is not yours. It belongs to the people,” she told him. “You are only a caretaker. Try your best to leave it better than you found it.” Matthew Sabaugh, who is currently a Macomb County Circuit Court judge, is remembering his mother for her love, encourage-
ment, enthusiasm, spirited conversations, tireless work ethic and public service. Carmella Sabaugh, who spent 24 years as the Macomb County clerk/register of deeds from 1992 to 2016, died on June 8 at the age of 85. She is survived by her forSee SABAUGH on page 22A

Summer Splash!
THE POOL IS OPEN WITH SOME MAJOR UPGRADES! The Eugene J. Ellison Municipal Pool is open for the summer, and it’s better than ever, thanks to some significant renovations. New underwater pool lights were also added to allow longer evening operations and improve safety.

This year, we’re thrilled to introduce new swim lessons for Pre-School and Parent & Tot, as well as Tuesday/Thursday Weeknight Water Fitness. The Kids’ Wading Pool has also been completely resurfaced and is open for the summer. We’ve also planned two Dive-In Movie nights for July and August, featuring The Goonies and Luca. Our beloved city’s swim team, the St. Clair Shores Sea Serpents, is back in action, and we’re offering all the regular swim classes from previous years. We can’t wait to see you there!

The old pump house was demolished and replaced with a 1,300-square-foot Pump House/Filtration Building. New filters, pumps, pool heaters, and chemical feeders were also installed. The pool now uses a tablet-based chlorine system instead of liquid, which is more cost-effective. All these great innovations don’t stop here. The City Council and City Administration, in close collaboration with Partners in Architecture, have spearheaded a comprehensive Master Plan for the Eugene J. Ellison Municipal Pool Complex, a testament to our community’s commitment to its development. Next on the agenda is the Pool Bath House. Already in the planning and design stage, the project is shooting for a tentative opening in Spring 2026. With these exciting changes, the pool is ready to make a splash this summer. The complex is nestled behind City Hall at 27600 Jefferson Ave., St. Clair Shores, MI 48081.
