STERLING HEIGHTS — The Sterling Heights Police Department is making an effort to better respond to individuals with different disabilities. In an April 17 press release, the department announced the launch of its special needs registry, a voluntary and confidential tool designed to help officers better respond to individuals with disabilities, medical conditions or unique behavioral needs during emergency situations. “Too often, misunderstandings in crisis situations have tragic consequences,” Interim Police Chief Ken Pappas said in a statement. The initiative is aimed at equipping officers with information believed to provide safer, more compassionate and appropriate responses when interacting with vulnerable community members, the press release states.
