Residents at Brookdale Senior Living and Novi Lakes Health Campus who served in the armed forces were honored with special ceremonies ahead of Veterans Day.

The people have spoken, and for the first time in 12 years, Novi has a new mayor. Justin Fischer has been selected to lead the city for the next four years. Fischer, a lifelong Novi resident, is currently a member of the Novi City Council, on which he has served for a total of 11 years. He has held numerous committee positions. Fischer Casey “I think it’s important that the mayor have the experience of having been on council,” Fischer said. “Going through as many budgets that I’ve gone through, understanding the relationship the City Council and the mayor Heintz Staudt have with the city manager and the entire staff, it’s those kinds of things that the experience on City Council will help me kind of hit the ground running as mayor now.”

housands of people, from all over the country, converged at the Suburban Collection Showplace for a chance to meet their celebrity heroes at the Motor City Comic Con’s fall show. The show offered people the chance to meet celebrities who are part of pop culture and purchase autographs, photographs and selfies for a fee of anywhere from $40 to as much as $250 depending on the celebrity. Missy Merchant made the journey to Novi from Petoskey, as Motor City Comic Con is the largest show in the area and offered her a chance to meet up with friends, show off cool cosplay and get the opportunity to meet and interact with Harvey Guillen and Doug Jones. She said it is worth the expense to meet the celebrities, as it offers her evidence of the interaction, which she proudly displays at her home and work. She said her entire living room is decorated with autograph memorabilia “When I look at (celebrity autographs and pictures) it kind of takes me back to the fun of the moment of being with that celebrity or sharing those moments together. So, it’s a nice visual reminder to que up those memories,” Merchant said. “For me it’s definitely worth it.” Merchant works as a counselor to those afflicted by addiction and other mental health issues. She said the autographs and memorabilia she has displayed at her office also act as a form of icebreaker and help ease tension with her clients. “It makes it so they feel more homey and not like they’re in, like, a doctor’s office,” she said. Merchant said that she feels the time she got with the celebrities she met at MC3 is “pretty adequate” for the amount of money she spends to have time with them. According to Merchant, Guillen and Jones both strive to make sure their fans leave feeling good about the experience. She said that at the May show, Jason Isaacs took approximately five to 10 minutes per fan to make sure they had a “quality” interaction. She said there are usually at least

one to two celebrities she wants to see at each show. “All of the (celebrities) I have met here have (taken time with fans),” Merchant said. “There have been some at other conventions that have been a lot more standoffish, where it is a lot harder to justify (paying to meet them).” Some attendees, such as Jedidiah Mann, of Warren, and his friend, Keven Schuster, of Roseville, said that the cost of the celebrity interactions deterred them from the opportunity to meet a celebrity. “They do tend to be more on the expensive side if you do get autographs, so that’s why I didn’t,” said Mann. Some families, such as the Boughton family, of Livonia, deliberated on what would be the best value for their money. They said that they were fans of Billy Dee Williams, who played Lando Calrissian in the “Star Wars” universe, but the cost of an autograph and photo was too pricey. Therefore, they said they were leaning toward just getting the professional photo with Williams, as the whole family could get in one photo and share the expense. Christian Boughton explained that most of the celebrities allow up to four people in a photo. “It’s expensive — especially for individuals; like, his is like $250 for an autograph,” Christian Boughton said. “So we’re wondering if we want to spend the money on that or go buy some of this mom and pop stuff.” “It’s just being able to say that I did it,” Christian Boughton said of his reason to buy the celebrity encounters. Christian Boughton said the high cost to meet the celebrities is understandable, because they are highprofile names. “The first time I came here they had William Shatner. His prices were very expensive, but for him to be incentivised to come here, they kind of let him charge what he charges,” Christian Boughton said. “This is how they make their money,” added Jennifer Boughton. “Just like anything, if we decide that it’s too much to get an autograph, then we just won’t get the autograph. Outside of elected office, Fischer works for Adient, a tier 1 auto seating supplier, as a director in its corporate treasury department. Prior to Adient, Fischer worked for Ford Motor Co. in a variety of finance positions. He lives with his wife of 13 years, Melissa, and their two children, Jack, 10, and Lilian, 6. He is a 2001 graduate of Novi High School and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in finance from Michigan State University in 2005, as well as his Master of Business Administration in 2009. He said he knew from a young age that business and finance were his calling and that he has always been interested in politics. “The path has kind of led me here, and I’m excited to be in this position,” he said. Fischer said he plans to maintain the city’s financial stability. “I pledge to maintain our strong financial performance, including keeping our AAA bond rating, low tax rates and minimal debt,” Fischer said in his candidate profile with the Novi Note. “Finance is such an important component of being mayor and kind of running a city,” Fischer said. “We always have to remember that we’re the stewards of the taxpayers’ money and we want to make sure that we’re utilizing it efficiently, just like a business would. We are

in very good financial shape. We have debt at an all-time low in Novi. We have some of the lowest tax rates in Oakland County. We have a triple A bond rating. Again, my background in finance is going to continue those types of policies. Fisher said his goals as mayor include public safety with investments in police and fire equipment and training, and to increase services available for senior citizens. Fischer said that there were committees recently started to address the needs the city has in the Public Safety Department and older adult services. “Those are two committees that I strongly support. I think they need to continue their

work and I really want to dive into that going forward,” Fischer said. In particular, Fischer said that the council needs to make some decisions on the level of senior housing available to residents. He said he also wants to make sure that there is adequate transportation for them. “I think the committees need to have a serious discussion on transportation, finding a way to make sure that we are utilizing the new millage that we pay to Oakland County, but also make sure that we’re providing the services, the transportation services, that our seniors need,” said Fischer. “On the public safety side, once again it’s going to be a big discussion on

what is the right footprint for our fire stations and our police station for the future of Novi, and what kind of cost does that come at.” Fischer said he has toured the current fire stations, and they are “just not adequate.” He said a lot of them were built 20-30 years ago. In particular, he said the changing rooms and the bathrooms need to be renovated to support the number of staff who now use them. See ELECTION on page 13A

Novi hires new assistant city manager

Novi Police Department to ‘Stuff a Squad Car’

The Novi Police Department is collecting new and unwrapped toys for children in need through its annual Stuff a Squad Car event, which benefits the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots campaign. The city of Novi announced the hiring of Danielle Mahoney as the new assistant city manager Nov. 13. Mahoney comes to Novi from Cary, North Carolina, where she served as the town’s assistant director of research and development. According to a press release, Mahoney is passionate about innovation, change management, technology implementation and organizational Mahoney development. She attended North Carolina State University, where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management, as well as a Master of Public Administration. She also has earned certificates from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business and Vanderbilt University’s Owen Graduate School of Management.

Novi parks and library to host 12 days of holiday programming The Novi Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department and the Novi Public Library are collaborating to sponsor 12 days of holiday programming at the Lakeshore Lodge Dec. 4-15. After a four-year hiatus, MiCareerQuest Southeast returned to metro Detroit. Eight thousand students and teachers from 100 high schools participated in the region’s largest career exploration event, which covered more than 400,000 square feet of floor space 8:15 a.m.-2:15 p.m. Nov. 14 at Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi. Nearly 1,000 professionals from 119 exhibitors in the fields of advanced manufacturing, construction, health sciences and technology taught students about 180 indemand careers using hands-on, interactive activities. Gun pointed at driver during road rage incident

According to a police report, at 6:42 p.m. Nov. 6, a driver aimed a gun at a man following a fit of road rage near the intersection of Nine Mile and Novi roads. The man told police that he exited his subdivision onto eastbound Nine Mile Road. He said that at the time he merged, there were no vehicles in the vicinity, according to the report. However, shortly after he pulled out onto Nine Mile, a black midsize Cadillac SUV with tinted windows sped up to the rear of his vehicle. The driver then repeatedly honked the horn at him. The man who had pulled out of his subdivision said that as he approached the light at Novi Road, he held his hand out of the driver’s side window to ask the driver behind him what the issue was. The other driver then got into the right turn lane, while he remained in the through lane. The Cadillac pulled ahead of him, the front driver’s side window rolled down, and the male driver in his 20s or 30s pointed a dark-colored pistol at him before turning and speeding off onto southbound Novi Road. The man told police that he was fearful that he would be shot and ducked down for cover. He stated that he could not get a great look at the driver and did not know the model or license plate of the Cadillac. He indicated that he only wanted the incident documented at this time.

Police arrest son for attacking father

Police were called to a residence in

the area of 11 Mile and Taft roads at 2:41 p.m. Nov. 9 after a young man reportedly slammed his father to the floor inside the home. The father was waiting outside the home when police arrived. He told police that he had been working in his home office when his son walked in wide-eyed and screaming. The father said he stood up and that’s when his son threw him to the ground and jumped on top of him. He said it was a struggle to get his son off him, but he was eventually able to do so. He said he then grabbed his phone and called 911. The father informed police that his son has been having frequent violent outbursts with both him and his wife. He said his son broke the front of their stove recently by throwing things at it. The father said that the son will often go from being quiet to screaming about random things that don’t pertain to anything that is happening, and that his behavior is getting out of control. The son had already left the home when police arrived. However, the father told police that his son likes to walk to a gas station on Grand River Avenue. Police were able to apprehend the son walking eastbound on Grand River Avenue near Bond Street. The son reportedly told police that he got upset because he was “overthinking” and he got aggressive and put his hands on his dad. Police then arrested the son. The son said that he did not think he was taking the proper medication for an illness and thinks he needs to be reevaluated, the report said. He was video arraigned Nov. 10 by 52-1 District Court Magistrate Robert Morad on a misdemeanor domestic violence citation. He was given a $2,500 personal recognizance bond and was released. — Charity Meier

photograph,” said Christian Boughton. “I think it just comes down to, ‘What does it mean to you?’ I don’t really have any attachment to Billy Dee, but for me, going and getting that autograph from Matthew Lillard, who I grew up watching him as Shaggy in the live action (‘Scooby-Doo’) series, so I’ve been a fan of his for years, so that meant a lot more to me than the hundred bucks I spent. For my dad, $250 for this photo (with Williams) — well worth it.” Jennifer Irwin, of Wilmington, Delaware, said that the experiences of meeting her celebrity heroes at conventions across the country, such as MC3, are well worth it to her. Irwin said that her joy in meeting celebrities has also given her the opportunity to meet some good friends from various other states. She met up with her friend Janel Gatten, of Morganfield, Kentucky, at the Motor City Comic Con, whom she met through a convention Facebook group. “For us, it’s a friendship thing too, because, obviously, we live far apart,” Irwin said. “It’s, like, really common for attendees of cons to make friends with other con-goers,” Gatten said. “For me, it’s the whole experience. I mean, I wouldn’t go for just an autograph or just a photograph.”

Irwin said that she will only travel to attend a convention if there is somebody that she wants to meet there. She said she will not go just for the atmosphere, or to see the people in cosplay, or for the artists. “I only go if there is an actor that I want to meet,” Irwin said. She said that her husband paid around $1,000 to give her the “Outlander” experience package at another convention for her birthday, and it was really worth it to her, but that is the most she said she would pay to meet a celebrity. She said it included a three-day admission, an autograph and photo with Sam Heughan and two other cast members, and two panels. Irwin explained that because she has watched “Outlander” so many times, it was well worth it to meet some of the cast. “To me, yes. It was absolutely worth it. Meeting him was like a dream come true,” Irwin said. “Just interacting with someone who helped to bring that show to life, I was over the moon and I’ll probably never meet him again. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.” Irwin said she has never been disappointed after she met any of her heroes from the acting world, but she admitted that she has been disappointed after meeting some musicians she admired. “It’s something that you would otherwise likely never experience,” Gatten said. t isn’t the holidays until Main Street in Rochester shines with a light display that puts Clark Griswold’s house from “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” to shame. This year, downtown Rochester was slated to officially transform into a glimmering spectacle when the Big, Bright Light Show switch was flipped Monday, Nov. 20, during the 50th annual Lagniappe event. At 6 p.m. on East Fourth Street, the Big, Bright Light Show program was slated to begin with help from Rochester Mayor Stuart Bikson, Channel 7 and a special appearance by Santa Claus. The 18th annual Big, Bright Light Show will be set aglow with 15 colors of LED lights. The lights are a huge attraction, according to Kristi Trevarrow, the executive director of the Rochester Downtown Development Authority. “Especially coming into our 18th year of Big, Bright, it’s less of an event and more of a tradition. It’s always part of the holiday conversation: ‘When are we going to see the lights?’” Trevarrow said. “Everybody always wants to come see the lights because your holidays wouldn’t be complete without that trip, and we appreciate that people have made us a part of their holidays. That is amazing to us. We have always said we are in the memory-making business, and I think that the Big, Bright Light Show is at the pinnacle of that.” The Big, Bright Light Show, the largest event hosted by downtown Rochester, will continue to run 5 p.m.-midnight through Jan. 21. “The lights are a great excuse to come out with your family, grab a hot cocoa, do a little holiday shopping, and just get your Christmas spirit on,” said Trevarrow. service stories, as did some of the residents. Each resident veteran was presented with a medal and a flag, and then was saluted by a member of AMVETS. This is the sixth year that Novi Lakes has held a ceremony to recognize its veterans. “The veteran residents were very appreciative and grateful to be recognized,” said Sarah Wozniak, life enrichment director at Novi Lakes Health Campus. “After the ceremony, I had one of the veterans personally thank me for doing that for them. He said that it’s really good to be recognized for his service.” Brookdale Senior Living residents were treated to a ceremony with traditional patriotic and military songs performed by music therapist Jennifer Smith, of AccentCare Hospice, including “America the Beautiful” and “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Meghan Pavliscak emotionally read Rita J. Landers’ poem ‘The American Vet’ with tears in her eyes, and resident activities manager Jesse Barrons recited “Beatitudes of American Servicemen and Women.” The resident veterans were all presented with a certificate of appreciation for their service and were individually saluted by Ben

Bowerman, a tech sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. The ceremony was coordinated by Nikkie Knight, of Brookdale Novi. “Anytime I get the honor to be a part of your lives, it’s a blessing, because it’s because of your service that I’m able to serve today, and your hard work paved the way for all the servicemen and women today,” said Bowerman. “I wanted to personally come here today to thank you all and put my part in to let you know that I will continue and I promise to continue on the legacy that you guys built in this country. … I would also like to thank not only you gentlemen but the spouses and family that supports you. … They’re the ones who sacrifice when we’re gone, and it’s hard on everybody, but they deserve just as much praise. Again, thank you for your service.” Following the ceremony, residents enjoyed cake and a Nerf gun war in which they were given Nerf guns and were allowed to shoot at the staff, including Barrons, who wore a target on his back. Barrons, the staff and Bowerman’s children ran throughout the dining area in front of the line of veterans, ducking under and around tables in an effort to avoid the foam darts. “I wanted to do something that was fun for you guys, and what better than a Nerf gun war?” Bowerman said. “I know my husband, he was thrilled
