Shelby Township Fire Department to welcome community to open house BY KARA SZYMANSKI kszymanski@candgnews.com
SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The Shelby Township Fire Department will be holding an open house on Saturday for the public to come visit and see what firefighters’ jobs are all about day to day. The event will be held 10-2 p.m. Oct 12 at Fire Station 1, 6345 23 Mile Road. From basic safety to firetrucks and ambulances, the day will be all about learning. Brian Werner, the deputy fire marshal and emergency manager at the Shelby Township Fire Department, said the open house is a tradition. The department opens up the entire station for the community to come enjoy a day with their firefighters and get to know them when they don’t need them in an emergency.

Domestic violence nonprofit plans dueling pianos fundraiser SHELBY TOWNSHIP — In 2022, domestic violence took the lives of more than 100 Michigan residents. Domestic violence crimes account for almost 40 percent of police calls, and 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have
been physically abused by an intimate partner. The Butterfly Collective was founded by a group of women who are survivors or have been impacted by domestic violence. Survivors of domestic violence often struggle to get on their feet after leaving an abusive relationship, and the Butterfly Collective is there to provide them with a
range of support, based on their needs. Based in Shelby Township, the Butterfly Collective’s assistance also shows survivors they are not alone — a key to helping them heal from trauma and rebuild their lives. The nonprofit organization is seeking sponsorships for its popular fundraiser “Dueling Pianos” from 6 to 10 See FUNDRAISER on page 10A
