Giorgio Rapicavoli is a passionate Miamian who has led a handful of respected restaurants, landing his first stint as executive chef at 660 at The Angler’s where he gained notice for his unique, albeit deft, touch with globally-inspired dishes. The first Miami chef to win the Food Network’s Chopped cooking contest, he has fulfilled his lifelong dream of opening his very own dining establishment, Eating House. Eating House is a cutting-edge concept developed by Rapicavoli located in the heart of Coral Gables. An avid artist both in and out of the kitchen, Rapicavoli demonstrates his passion for street art and love of music through his work with stencils and spray paint, as well as his occasional dabble into the world of sampling and mixing various beats and songs. O
n a sunny Sunday afternoon this past month, my husband and I drove along De Soto Blvd. following the Gables Stage terrific production of “Cock” heading toward Bulla for their stunning tuna tartare. As we passed the busy Venetian Pool, our conversation drifted toward our combined 60 years of enjoying the many gems in our City Beautiful. It turns out the Venetian Pool was one of the first “attractions” we both visited upon moving to South Florida decades ago. We had a similar encounter in May driving up Old Cutler to the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden Butterfly Parade. This time our reminiscences turned to our first visits to Fairchild; as it turns out, we both went to see (and smell?) Mr. Stinky many years ago. I’ve seen the past and now I see signs of a strong, well planned, exciting future for Coral Gables… and I like what I see.

W
e all know people with gravitas.
Sometimes we admire them; sometimes we loathe them; often times we ignore them. But one thing is clear, you cannot simply dismiss their importance, substance, flair or depth of personality. They are usually bigger than life and turn heads like a traffic accident. A brief history lesson: gravitas was one of the Roman virtues, along with pietas, dignitas and virtus. So, the origins of this type of personality go way back to the ancient civilization that gave us our calendar and “Et tu Brute”. We are talking about the time of togas and laurel wreaths and lions and tigers and bears and gladiators and Bacchanalian booze fests. That’s right…the good ol’ days! Today, we often equate gravitas with ego. Big, giant, overthe-top, blustering egos that cause us to shake our heads in disbelief. You know the type! They might sit next to you at work, the church pew, a Chamber breakfast or even the local country club. They are a force to be reckoned with… and usually not in a good way. But gravitas is more than mere ego. It is the way in which one carries themselves. Chin up, eyes forward, shoulders back. Go! When I think of gravitas, I think of someone like the president of the United States or a celebrity or Usain Bolt or Roger Federer or Oprah. Closer to home, there are many examples of leaders in our local businesses and the arts and government who just exude confidence in every moment and every pore of their lives. It is exhilarating to watch and riveting to dissect. At least for me it is.
If you are a fan of the HBO sitcom VEEP, then you might say that Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ character, Selina Meyer, has gravitas. Not always in a good way, but gravitas nonetheless. She is inappropriately confident in just about every aspect of her political and personal lives. She is equal parts ego and ridiculous, but that odd juxtaposition only endears her further to us. She is surrounded by incompetence and foolishness and yet, finds a way to sink even lower into the vortex. She defines the depths of the human condition and then takes it down another notch. I love VEEP and I love the lunacy that ensues each week in a mere 30 minutes. That, my friends, is gravitas in full bloom. Just a mere whiff of its largesse draws us in closely, only to be smacked on the nose, hard across the bridge. And yet, we go in for seconds and third and more. Big personalities have always been a part of life and we mere plebes just need to know how to manage them. Whether they be our boss, co-worker, elected official, pastor, neighbor or Facebook friend, there is a way to make it work…and to our own advantage. Trust me, it often takes gravitas to get things done. And when it all works out – well - it is like a hero being welcomed home. Parade and all! As a scholar of the grandeur that was Rome (my minor in college was in Classical Studies, by the way), I take a slightly different view of it all. For, it was gravitas that brought the leaders of the day closer to the gods and therefore helped them establish a civilization. We are the great inheritors of these dark times, beneficiaries of the blight and beastly brutality that was the script for ancient Rome. Their gravitas is our substance. Their flair is today’s style. Their chaos is our order. So, assemble the parade and let’s get marching!

How I Embraced Social Media to Build an International Art Business
rt galleries have a traditional model of clients walking in, seeing a piece of art and making a purchase.
In 1996, my first gallery refused to allow a computer in the gallery for fear staff might avoid walk-in clients. However, understanding that client follow-ups are essential, I purchased my own computer and began to communicate with walk-ins and prospects online. In 2003, sensing that the market was shifting, I changed the paradigm to mitigate slow foot traffic in our varied gallery locations throughout Florida. My multitiered approach focused on social media and advantageous exchange rates in UK/European markets to expand our international business virtually, eventually phasing out the need for a brick-and-mortar gallery altogether. Through an ever-evolving subset of social media sites, including Quintessentially, ASmallWorld, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Twitter and others over the years, our clients have located prominent artists, obtained required information on the piece of interest, edified themselves as to our dealer credentials and made their purchases online. Further, new clients have discovered us through their friends and business contacts and made contact knowing that we were trusted resources for people they know personally.
In the past months we have sold high-end works to clients in Australia, Ireland, Greece, France, Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Brazil, London, Germany, UAE and throughout the United States. Although art buying is often passion-based, our buyers tend to be tech savvy and pragmatic, seeking the best price for a work they can get on an artist they are already familiar with. As the virtual world, and particularly the art world, is rife with dilettantes and charlatans, platforms such as LinkedIn allow prospective clients to see recommendations, awards and conferred honors you have earned over your career and edify themselves that they are dealing with someone professional. Involvement in forums and regular posting of articles relevant to your craft grow your audience and brand amongst group members. Facebook, Pinterest, Tumblr and others allow prospects to gain a social sense of who you are as a person, your family, your interests, etc. This allows them to feel that they are dealing with a friend. Obviously, this level of personal exposure requires diligence to maintain a professional presence, but it also incorporates a sense of accountability and fairplay with buyers and sellers. Further, seeing what people share and “LIKE” provides valuable demographic data on individual clients that can be later utilized in direct marketing efforts. Twitter allows you to farm non-traditional clients and expose them to your company passively. Houzz, an interior design site, has allowed persons and professionals who are in the process of purchasing items for homes to see the artworks and interact with me though forums.
Using this method, our general price-point has escalated from $2,000 to $30,000 a piece to individual works of art over $5 million in the past five years alone, including original works from Picasso, Dali, Modigliani, Indiana, Warhol and others.
Our regular posts on our blog, and the associated tags, allow people first to discover us through traditional Google searches, and then gain a sense of our scholarship on art in general. Interactions with readers via feedback allow us to answer questions quickly and add them to our databases.
We have developed virtual relationships with over 25,000 museums, Forbes and Fortune 500 members, private dealers, investors and clients around the world and here in South Florida, sometimes never meeting the clients face-to-face.
As social media sites are ever-evolving, we constantly discover and experiment with new platforms which place prospective buyers and sellers within the same context. As more high-end buyers turn go online for their investments, brand familiarity and direct social engagement will be key in culling and keeping prospects and expanding market reach.
