t is said that great opportunities begin with “Great Expectations” and that is the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce’s focus this upcoming year under the leadership of Chair-Elect Sarah Nesbitt Artecona. “Each year the annual goals conference gives a chance for you, our membership, to decide where we should focus our time and attention,” Artecona said. honoring an outstanding leader in Coral Gables. The following day will open with a special edition of our monthly Good Morning Coral Gables Breakfast. We will be announcing the incoming Board members as well as welcoming County Manager George Burgess as the guest speaker. He will be discussing the county’s strategic plan. Following the breakfast will be a series of break-out workshop sessions rounding out the day. The Goals Conference will conclude with a poolside reception at sunset. D
uring these difficult economic times, it seems like I repeat these same four words (How MAY we help you?) over and over again each day to the various folks I come into contact with – members, prospective members, elected officials, community visitors, business leaders, and the like. They are said with genuine care and are meant as much as an offer of support as they are a lifeline of compassion and concern. Your Chamber is here to help in these difficult times. As we head deeper into Q2 and the mid-point of the calendar year, there are signs of economic recovery beginning to blossom around us. As a consumer-based economy, one of the first signs of recovery is spending – a direct correlation to consumer confidence and the initial step on the road to recovery. I am pleased when I enjoy lunch in one of our Chambermember restaurants and see a full dining room. I can feel the energy returning to the conversation, as well as the establishment. There is a buzz in the air that has been missing for some time. I know that folks are being more cautious right now; I think it is time to be cautiously optimistic. Now is the time to get more engaged in building your business, taking risks and putting yourself out there. Your Chamber is here to help you accomplish these goals. Now more than ever you need to work your contacts, seek new
opportunities, and use your Chamber relationships to grow your business. Tell us, as a new month begins, how MAY we help you? In support of this effort to get out and hear directly from our members in a more direct way, I have been working in a small business every other month as part of my CEO Work Day. In April, I worked at Café Demetrio, located at 300 Alhambra Circle. This second generation family-owned business is as charming as its name suggests. Whether you love coffee, delicious eats, or amazing treats, Café Demetrio is your one-stop caffeine shop. Leo, one of Demetrio’s sons, is the Barista Extraordinaire who tried his level best to teach me to make a cappuccino. While I am not much of a coffee drinker, I can tell you that the delicious Lavazza coffee beans (direct from Italy) are amazing, and once the grinder releases the delicious aroma, even the most fickle coffee drinker is hooked. In addition to serving patrons, busing tables and taking out the trash, I made a sinful creation of caramel and chocolate goodness infused into a flaky croissant. Amazing! There is something for everyone on the menu at Café Demetrio, including delightful indoor seating and a charming, intimate outdoor patio to enjoy your delicious delights. Stop by and see the entire team at Café Demetrio when you need your next coffee and caffeine fix. And do me a favor, whenever you are in a restaurant or retail environment, look your server/host/cashier in the eye, thank them for their good work, and remember that they are professionals. eople in the know are saying our economic woes will be turning around just in time to keep most of us out of the poor house. Well, one of our prospective Trustees, Jessica Wilcox, wasn’t satisfied with waiting around for things to improve and took action to position herself for the turnaround. She told me her most wonderful news at a recent Trustee Reception. Jessica just bought out her two partners and is now the proud owner of MoneyClip which specializes in selling coupons for retail establishments published in a monthly book aimed at getting traffic into their stores. Nothing like good old fashioned American ingenuity and hard work to turn bad times into good! Our next Trustee Reception will be at the new law offices of Foley & Lardner on May 12th. You may remember the firm recently sponsored our Trustee Luncheon at which Susan Hahn from the UM Miller School of Medicine spoke about Human Genomics and Genomic Medicine. The next Trustee Luncheon, sponsored by Coconut Grove Bank, will be on May 27th at the Westin Colonnade. The following month, our Trustee Reception will be held on June 9th when the Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce will join us for our Second Annual Colossal Clash of Culinary Titans. The Trustee Luncheon will be held on June 29th at the Hyatt Regency Coral Gables. Frank Armstrong, a principal
with Investor Solutions, Inc., a nationally recognized financial advisor, will speak about retirement challenges and how to navigate our financial future, certainly a very timely subject! For those of us that could not make it, our March Luncheon, sponsored by Turner Construction Company, featured a very interesting presentation by Bernard Zyscovich of Zyscovich Architects. All in attendance learned how local governments around our country and the world are finally taking lessons from history. Communities where we can work and play in close proximity to our homes are coming into vogue, giving us more time to enjoy our families and hobbies. March’s reception at Coral Gables Executive Physicians turned out to be one of our largest networking events in quite a while, as we enjoyed the concierge medical practice’s newly designed offices. Please welcome new Trustee Members Great Communicators and Turner Construction. Remember to look for them at the next Trustee function, learn more about them and consider how you might help each other get more out of your Chamber memberships. CITY BEAUTIFUL ON SHOWCASE IN 14TH ANNUAL BAPTIST HEALTH TOUR OF THE GABLES 5K LARRY M. NOLAN Coral Gables Chamber

n Saturday, May 23rd, the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce will host its 14th Annual Baptist Health Tour of the Gables 5K. This race takes you on a beautiful tour through scenic areas of Coral Gables, beginning and ending at the historic Coral Gables City Hall, located on the corner of LeJeune Road and Miracle Mile, right in the heart of Coral Gables. The 14th Annual Baptist Health Tour of the Gables 5K, which is a USATF and RCCA certified course, will have staggered start times for the 5K wheelchair, 5K run and 5K walk. All members and friends of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce are welcome to participate in this wonderful event meant for the entire family. Children under age 18 are also
encouraged to register. All participants will also receive a race packet, which includes a custom t-shirt. Awards will be given to the run and walk winners
— overall male and female. Medals will be awarded to the top three in each age group. The company with the most participants will receive the Chairman’s Cup, so build up
your team and join the race! Come early even if you are not taking part in the race and cheer on all who participate. Free parking is available at the parking garage on Andalusia Avenue, close to LeJeune Rd. The cost for participating is: Cash or Check - $25 — before event day, $15 for those under 18. It will be $35 on Race day and $20 for runners under 18 on Race day. Participants can register online at www.footworksmiami. com.
