PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE - The Chamber Takes the Hill Mark A. Trowbridge

This past month, our Chamber led a delegation of a dozen business leaders on a trip to the nation’s capital to meet with members of Congress, our partner groups and member organizations. This is the ninth year that our Chamber has participated in this type of advocacy trip to DC and the third year where we have led the delegation on behalf of our Chamber members. Preparation for this annual trip begins in December as we hone and craft our federal legislative priorities for the meetings that will take place while in DC. This is a lengthy process with tremendous input from our members and partners and managed by the Business & Government Affairs Committee, led ably by Patrick O’Connell of EWM and Frederic Ariola of Florida Blue. To say that it was a busy trip is an understatement, as our group held or participated in 18 meetings over a period of two very full days. We began on Monday afternoon at the US State Department discussing opportunities regarding trade promotion (TPA) with Karen Richardson, Deputy Director in the Bureau of Public Affairs at State and former White House aide. With trade high on the President’s agenda, it is clear that this issue is top-of-mind with all of the agencies. Then, it was off to the Small Business Administration (SBA) for back-to-back meetings with Thad Inge and Tameka Montgomery regarding our ongoing strategic business alliance with the SBA and the Emerging Leaders Program. We were then hosted by the DC office of Becker & Poliakoff for an Insider Briefing led by Amanda Wood and Omar Franco. This is the fourth year that the firm has given us keen insight into where our Members of Congress stand on the issues and our legislative priorities.
lief for small banks and flood insurance relief, an area where the Congressman has been very helpful and a bi-partisan leader. Then, it was off to a meeting with Congressman Carlos Curbelo, a freshman in this Congress, having been elected in November. We received a very warm welcome from the Congressman and his Chief of Staff, Roy Schultheis, a former member of our Chamber! Then, it was off to two additional meetings, starting with Senator Bill Nelson, fresh of a security briefing on ISIS. We wrapped with Congressman Mario Diaz Balart’s legislative staff, where a detailed discussion on appropriations ensued, as well as the future of immigration reform. Wednesday morning began with a breakfast briefing by Jason Poblete of Poblete Tamarago (a member of our Chamber) at the gorgeous Florida House. Jason shared with us insights on each of our priorities, but the majority of the discussion was around Cuba and the evolving policy. Then, it was off to meet with Marco Rubio’s team. This was a very positive meeting and most helpful as we discussed everything from the Ex-Im Bank (which the Senator does not support in its current form) to regulatory relief, a sweet spot for the Senator. A warm welcome awaited us from Congresswoman Frederica Wilson and her staff. We covered a number of topics, and she asked us to help with human trafficking by supporting efforts to #bringhomeourgirls. Our final meeting of the fly-in is always one of our favorites - Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. Her district includes the Gables and so she is intimately aware of every issue we are dealing with locally, as well as our priorities. We always appreciate her candor, enthusiasm and the generous time she spends with us. These 18 meetings were just the beginning of the journey as we now set to work on getting our priorities moved forward. When the voice of business takes our membership on the road, it is noticed, and valued. Now, the real work begins!
Tuesday opened with a briefing at the US Chamber of Commerce. We were updated on health care issues, small business concerns and other business priorities. From there, it was off to the Florida Governor’s Office at the Hall of States. Yes, our State has a full-time team up in DC with a very aggressive portfolio of activities. This meeting was enlightening as we once again realized that our members’ priorities are not necessarily in sync or top-of-mind with our State’s leadership. Our next meeting was with Congressman Patrick Murphy’s staff. At the end of March, City National Bank was the sponsor for our Trustee Luncheon, with the remarkable Harve Mogul, President and Chief Executive of the United Way of Miami-Dade as the featured speaker. Mogul’s impressive – to say the least- career at the United Way started in 1991, and TRUSTEE EVENTS: he has guided that worthy organization with tremendous MARCH - APRIL 2015 success, bringing people and organizations from across the county together to create a more educated, prosperous and vital Miami-Dade. We opened April with our Trustee Reception, at the Baptist Medical Plaza – coincidentally it was also National Volunteer Week, recognizing the efforts of so many of the unsung volunteers in non-profits . We toasted them with terrific appetizers and delicious wines, which only added to the comfortable ambience, and were treated to private behindthe-scenes tours of the medical facilities there. The April Trustee Luncheon, sponsored the Diplomats of the Chamber’s Trustee Council at the Coral Gables Country Club was highlighted by our honoring two teachers and two students from the International Baccalaureate Program at Coral Gables High School and Gulliver Preparatory. Our hats are off to these dedicated teachers and there’s no question that the sky is the limit for the spotlighted students, whose scholastic careers promise to continue on their already stellar path. They were followed by our featured speaker, Jose Sotolongo, the Executive Director of the Miami-Dade Sports Commission, whose goal is to create and entice sporting events that will not only improve the quality of life for our community as a whole, but also generates a significant economic impact for our county. This coming month is the long anticipated 9th Annual Rising Star Awards, hosted by our friends at EWM Realty International and to be held at the fabled 15th floor of the Bacardi Building, always one of our favorite venues. Congratulations to all the finalists in the four categories, and a special nod to those finalists who are Trustee members of our Chamber:
