Forum back by popular demand Tuesday, April 14, is Election Day, and once again, the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, along with the University of Miami, is hosting a candidate forum at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, in the UM Fieldhouse (next to the Bank United Center). All city residents are
Contrast and compare The forum gathers all the candidates in one spot and is designed to deliver an evening of dynamic, informative discussions. With one hour devoted to each of the two commission races, followed by a discussion among mayoral candidates, voters will leave knowing where each candidate stands on the pressing issues facing our city. “Voter turnout in 2013 was a dismal 23.15 percent. That means out of 30,672 registered voters, only 7,101 cast ballots,” say Patrick M. O’Connell, Vice-Chair of Government and Legislative Affairs, Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. “It’s essential for our city’s well-being that we become familiar with the candidates and their positions –– and then go to the polls and vote.” Gateway to Latin America As early as 1925, City Founder George Merrick predicted Coral Gables would some day be an international city. Now, 90 years later, our multicultural city is home to over 20 consulates and foreign government offices and more than 140 multinational corporations. And, it has six sister cities worldwide. This forum is just one way of ensuring Coral Gables residents continue to elect officials who are committed to upholding Mr. Merrick’s vision of an “international city.” How our city is governed The City of Coral Gables is a Commission-Manager form of government. Residents elect a five-member City Commission charged with providing community leadership and developing policies to guide the delivery of services. The Commission appoints the City Manager, who serves as chief administrator and ensures policies are properly executed. The Commission also appoints the City Attorney and the City Clerk. City Commissioners are elected to four-year, staggered terms. The Mayor serves for two years. Citywide elections are held the second Tuesday in April in odd-numbered years.

In order to be nominated, a member must sumbit his or her request signed by twenty-five (25) members in good standing to the Chamber office by Friday, April 3, 2015 at Noon. Any submission from the membership will be added to the slate of nominees determined by the Chamber’s Nominating Committee and Board of Directors. My biggest goal in 2015 was to take better care of me. I battled an illness in November that was like a punch in the gut and nearly took me out. I hope no one was over-saturated with all the November and December holiday celebrations, because January roared in like a lion for the Chamber! Just a week after New Year’s Day, the Chamber held our second annual New Year’s Networker. If you thought it was good last year, this year, again under the leadership of Trustee Diplomat Yesenia Moreno, surpassed it! The beautiful ballroom at The Biltmore Hotel was transformed into a gallery of tasting stations manned by over a dozen of our most popular Gables eateries, with Bacardi providing not only signature cocktails but also all the preferred libations. The cozy ambiance, with comfortable sofas and chairs, provided a great place to nibble and network. I predict by next year this event will be one of the signature events of the Chamber year! Kudos to Yesenia for a second year of her helming this terrific event!

On the 13th, the Trustees were treated for the second year in a row to a terrific reception at the Gables Ponce. Chic and stylish, with indoor and outdoor poolside areas for networking and sporting a fantastic skyline of The City Beautiful, it was just as much fun as last year – and the perfect venue to meet, socialize and network Have a terrific Coral Gables Chamber Day! with your fellow Trustees! At the end of the month, it was back on to one of our favorite places for our monthly Trustee Luncheon – the elegantly appointed The Palace Coral Gables. Held in their private theatre, and sponsored by Trustee member PS Financial Services, over 80 Trustee members were treated to two special speakers – City Commissioner Frank Quesada, who broke away from a commission meeting to bring us up-to-date on several of the new developments and projects that are in the works in the Gables. The Commissioner was followed by Julie Edwards, Chief Marketing Officer from All Aboard Florida, who gave us an inside look at the progress and promise of the new high-speed railway that will connect South Florida to Orlando and beyond. It’s been a project long in the planning, and the enthusiasm for this state-of-the-art transportation project that will have us all in the Magic Kingdom without the long drive, was unanimous. The February Trustee Reception was the next event not to be missed. Sponsored by one of our all-time favorite Trustee Members, Bacardi, this always much anticipated event was, of course, held on their legendary 15th Floor. A remarkable combination of a fully staffed sleek lounge, together with the Bacardi Museum, with artifacts of the company’s history dating back 150 years displayed in magnificent cases, including original documents and vintage bottles of liquors dating back to the days of old Havana and Prohibition. Whenever there is an opportunity to visit this very special floor of the Bacardi building, don’t miss it! The Westin Colonnade Coral Gables was the setting for our February Trustee Luncheon, one of the most largely attended of the year so far!
