Dear Friends, As we approach the holiday season, I’ve been thinking a lot about the role of community at the Center for Urban Families (CFUF). We give each other a sense of belonging, connection and shared purpose. We help one another carry the burdens, hold each other accountable and find hope in the future. For our members, they know at CFUF they will find a network of people who are invested in their future. They come to us when life is difficult — a father who has lost contact with his children, a young woman who wants to get serious about finding a career, a couple who are struggling but dream about leaving a legacy for their family. They are all met by a community that believes in them, especially our committed donors who make this work possible. CFUF is a place where people can exhale. It was in that spirit that CFUF alumnus and current board member Barry Lancaster came to me with an idea: a holiday gathering to bring our community together, pause in gratitude and share in the joy of belonging. The Spirit of Giving Holiday Celebration: An Evening of Music, Mission, and Giving is planned for December 10, 2026, from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. at the National Museum of Railroad History & Innovation. I warmly invite you to join us as a sponsor for this uplifting evening— celebrating community, connection, and reminding us that we are all in this together. We will say thank you to our donors and community partners, find inspiration in our members’ stories of transformational change and renew our commitment to dismantling poverty. Most of all, I want to celebrate this community we have created together. Since 1999, CFUF has transformed the lives of 33,804 men and women and counting. And we’ve helped them take deliberate steps toward building generational wealth for the 73,119 children in their lives. Still, reminders of why we do this work are all around. I see the evidence at the gas station when the guy next to me puts exactly $2.38 of fuel in his tank or when news breaks of the latest cuts in federal aid. Our programs at CFUF are constantly evolving and expanding as we become more sophisticated in our ability to track data, measure outcomes and understand what truly moves people toward economic security and family stability. One thing, though, has never changed and never will: We cannot do this alone. Your support allows us to do the hard, sustained work. Dear Friends, The expanding portfolio of the Center for Urban Families (CFUF) and our ability to make lasting commitments to our members defy the experience of a lot of nonprofits these days. Many organizations are surviving, at best — a situation compounded by the current administration in Washington, D.C. The reason CFUF has been able to refine, enhance and strengthen our approach to dismantling poverty over nearly 30 years is rooted in the belief that you, our donors, funders and supporters, have in our mission. You’ve witnessed the results of the holistic approach we take to serving people who have been marginalized, and you’ve seen what happens when families previously locked out of systems of power, influence and opportunity have a serious chance to build generational wealth. CFUF’s work is multi-year by definition, and our supporters respond by making generous long-term commitments to fund it. As a result, we’ve instituted EMPath Mobility Mentoring to guide our members toward lifetime self-sufficiency and created new staff positions focused on pre-enrollment support and in-depth interventions to remove the stubborn barriers families face. We have grown our advocacy efforts, invested in research, evaluation and innovation — and we are constructing an economic mobility ecosystem through BCAAN (Baltimore Communities Assisting and Advancing Neighbors). We’re also adding opportunities for members to receive occupational skills training to increase their earning potential, helping couples build healthy relationships and providing in-house short-term employment for members who need immediate income but are not yet established in careers. We have a proven model for success that academics and practitioners across the country have studied and aspire to replicate. This is because the programs we’ve designed work, and the positive change we’ve created in people’s lives and communities is measurable and documented. Your investment in CFUF has made Baltimore families more secure and enriched communities in ways that will impact generations. I want to personally thank you for your belief in CFUF and your ongoing commitment to our mission. This December, we will celebrate our collective impact with a first-of-its-kind event, The Spirit of Giving Holiday Celebration: An Evening of Music, Mission, and Giving.
