MEET THIS WEEK’S VALUED TEAM MEMBER
IaminmyfirstyearasaTeacherofStudentswithVisualImpairments(TSVIor TVI)atCESA7,andamcurrentlyworkingtowardmyMaster'sinSpecial Education,withanemphasisonteachingstudentswhoareblindorvisually impaired.ATVIprovidesspecializedinstructionandsupporttoindividualswho areblindorhavelowvision.Thiscanincludebrailleinstruction,assistive technologyinstruction,collaboratingwithteachersandstaff,providingadapted materialsandresources,andensuringthatallofmystudentshaveaccesstotheir schoolenvironmentsinthewaysthatworkbestforthem!
Previously,Iworkedfor5yearsintheBrillionSchoolDistrictasaSpecial Educationteacher Inowworkin15schooldistrictsacrosstheCESA7regionand haveenjoyedgettingtoknowalloftheteachers,staff,andstudentsInowhave thepleasureofworkingwith!Thisnewrolehasprovidedmewithsomany opportunitiestonetworkwithotherCESAemployeesfromaroundthestate.The VisionandOrientationandMobilityprofessionalshavebeenespecially supportiveandwelcomingasInavigatelearningbraille,understandingtheeverchangingassistivetechnology,andgrowinginhowIbestsupportmystudents.
OutsidemyroleatCESA7,Icurrentlyserveasathree-yearvolunteerCaptainfor theBoys'andGirls'BrigadeinNeenah.Duringthefallandwintermonths,I volunteerwiththeeveningprogramDowntown,andspendafairamountoftime atCampOnawayvolunteeringduringthespringandsummer!
Mypartner,Wesley,andIlovespendingourtimewithourtwodogs,Briggsand Freya,andtacklingthemanyhomeprojectsIhavestarted(andmaystillbein progress!)aroundthehouse.Thissummer,wehopetofinishourbackyardsowe canhostourfamilyandfriends.
TheSchoolDistrictofAshwaubenoncontinuestodemonstratewhatispossible whencollaboration,vision,andcommitmenttomultilinguallearnerscometogether. Overthepasttwoschoolyears,thedistrict’sELTeamhaspartneredwithCESA7to deepeninstructionalpracticesandstrengthensystemsofsupportforstudents.
FacilitatedbyBethVandeHey,LearningSpecialistatCESA7,thiscollaborativework hasfocusedonbuildingtheknowledgeandcapacityoftheELteam.
Duringthe2024–2025schoolyear,theELTeamconcentratedonstrengtheningtheir understandingandapplicationoftheWIDAEnglishLanguageDevelopment(ELD) StandardsFramework.Throughongoingprofessionallearning,theteambuiltshared language,deepenedtheirunderstandingoflanguagedevelopment,andexamined howtheELDStandardscanguideintentionalinstructionaldecision-making. Thisyear,theteamhastakentheworkevenfurther.Movingfromtheorytopractice, theyselectedacontentunitandareengaginginacollaborativeprocessto intentionallyaligntheELDStandardswithacontentunit,downtothelessonlevel. Together,theyare:

Designingintegratedlanguagelessonsthatexplicitlydevelopstudents’ academiclanguage
Creatingmeaningfulscaffoldstoensuremultilinguallearnerscanaccess,engage in,anddemonstratetheirunderstandingofgrade-levelcontent
Thisworkreflectsapowerfulshiftfromsupportinglanguageinisolationto embeddinglanguagedevelopmentwithincoreinstruction.Byaligningstandards, instruction,andscaffolds,theteamisworkingtoensurethatmultilinguallearners arebothchallengedandsupported.Itisajourney.
