STRENGTHENING
EDUCATION SUPPORT
Mishicot School District is strengthening support for special education paraprofessionals through its partnership with CESA 7. Throughout the year, CESA 7 school psychologist Dr. Becky Steensen facilitated professional learning sessions for paraprofessionals across elementary, middle, and high school settings. Topics included behavior as communication, fostering student independence, best practices in supporting classroom instruction, and understanding autism.
Across the sessions, key themes included the importance of mindset, relationships, skillbuilding, and calm, consistent responses that help create safe learning environments. Additional focus was placed on proactive supports before, during, and after lessons, as well as subtle supports that promote student independence The active participation of both newer and veteran special education paraprofessionals helped create a collaborative and supportive learning community. This work has been especially meaningful because the group has been engaged, interactive, and supportive. Participant feedback has been very positive, highlighting the value of a collaborative approach, practical strategies, and shared professional growth. Director of Special Education Kari Stryhn has been a strong supporter of this work and of ongoing professional learning for paraprofessionals. Together, Mishicot School District and CESA 7 continue to build a strong partnership focused on staff growth and student success
