Among those honored for Successful Practices is an incredible local effort right in our community: Oneida Reads! We are especially thrilled to celebrate this achievement because CESA 7 Literacy Specialist Sarkis Wentland directly supports Oneida Reads in these efforts. Working alongside their team, Sarkis provides comprehensive guidance—ranging from LETRS training and on-site coaching for student-facing staff to summer programming support and ongoing literacy consulting. District Spotlight - New Holstein School District B U I L D I N G ST R O N G E R SYST E MS F O R M U LT I L I N G U A L L E A R N E R S : N E W H O L ST E I N & C E S A 7 The partnership between the School District of New Holstein and CESA 7 demonstrates what is possible when collaboration, vision, and a shared commitment to multilingual learners come together. Over the past several school years, New Holstein has partnered with CESA 7 to deepen instructional practices, strengthen systems of support, and build districtwide capacity to meet the needs of multilingual learners. A central focus of this partnership has been helping the district move from responding to individual needs as they arise to developing a more intentional, data-informed, and sustainable approach to English learner programming. Through ongoing consultation and collaboration, CESA 7 has supported New Holstein in analyzing ACCESS data, identifying student and program needs, navigating evolving state requirements, making informed program decisions, and developing an EL policy handbook aligned with requirements and the district's unique context. Just as importantly, the work has extended beyond the EL program itself. CESA 7 has partnered with district administrators, collaborated directly with classroom teachers, and conducted classroom visits to strengthen educators’ understanding of how multilingual learners can be supported within every content area. These experiences have helped reinforce an important belief: supporting multilingual learners is not solely the responsibility of the EL educator—it is a shared responsibility across classrooms, grade levels, and the entire district. The partnership has also provided opportunities for professional growth and mentorship. Through ongoing coaching, collaborative problem-solving, and professional learning—including focused opportunities to dig deeply into student data—New Holstein continues to build the knowledge and confidence needed to make thoughtful decisions for multilingual learners. This sustained approach helps ensure that improvements are not dependent on a single initiative or individual, but are embedded within systems and practices that can continue to grow over time. As one New Holstein EL educator shared: “Our partnership with CESA 7 has helped us build an EL program that is intentional, data-informed, and truly responsive to the needs of our students and district. Beth has not only helped me grow into my role as an EL educator, but has also partnered with our teachers and administrators to build the knowledge, systems, and shared responsibility needed to better support multilingual learners throughout our schools.” Through collaboration, coaching, data-informed decision-making, and a commitment to building collective capacity, the School District of New Holstein and CESA 7 continue to create stronger systems and more inclusive learning environments where multilingual learners can thrive.
