Central’s Playground

Dear Friends,

As I write these words, I have just spent a weekend in Savannah, Georgia for a family event I’m the son of a United Methodist minister, meaning my childhood and teenage years were characterized by moving As my father was appointed from church to church, our family moved from town to town. My father grew up in Savannah, and my grandparents and other family members lived there In my own itinerant ministry, Savannah has become one of my centering places Even as I moved, the homes of my grandparents in Aiken and Savannah were constants They were places I felt grounded. Although I never lived there, Savannah feels like home. It feels familiar and comfortable. Last weekend, I spent an afternoon walking around, enjoying the beautiful city and the nostalgia it conjured

It struck me that this is not unlike what we do in our worshiping life as we follow the Christian year We are once again in Lent, this season of spiritual preparation for Easter We’ve been here before We’ve received the ashes of Ash Wednesday, and we’re experiencing special worship services Many of us have begun a Lenten fast or taken on a new spiritual practice Regardless of how we experience Lent, we’ve been here before It is familiar, perhaps even comforting

That familiarity and comfort may be why I find Lent so meaningful It is like a trip home, where we hear again God’s call to reorient our lives toward Him Like a familiar place, Lent grounds us The rhythms of Lent help us re-experience God’s faithful love and His call on our lives

I urge you to take advantage of the special worship experiences and events we have planned this month, and find peace and renewal in all God offers us

Yours in Christ,

One of the things I like most about my job is getting to teach. I went to college to be a teacher, and was a teacher for a while, so that’s no surprise, I suppose. Especially as a pastor, there are a lot of things you can get into in a Bible Study that you simply can’t get to in a sermon; in particular you don’t get other perspectives. I love hearing people’s differing interpretations of stories and passages, getting to know one another’s stories, and seeing how those things inform one another.

I’m really excited about our Wednesday night Lenten study, where we’re looking at the Lenten psalms through the lens of African-American spirituals. Music history is something I’ve always been interested in, and the ways in which history informs music, and music informs our theology is fascinating. I’m also excited that, after Easter (starting April 15th), we’ll be starting a joint Bible study with our friends from Cumberland UMC entitled, “Luke: The Gospel of Friendship,” where we’ll look at the ways in which Luke’s gospel calls us to view one another as friends, and how we are to do that.

These studies are just a few ways in which we can learn and grow in our faith here at Central. We have so many different Bible study offerings for all age groups, and I want to encourage you to try one, if you’re not already a part of one. They are meaningful ways in which we can deepen our faith and our friendships in order to help us live into our calling to follow Jesus.

Grace and peace, Rusty

Rev. Meg Bryce Jiunnies

Pastor of Faith Formation & Discipleship

Dear Church Family,

Our whole-church focus this Lenten season is “renewed in mercy.” We’re preaching it, and we’re talking about it, and we are offering many ways for each of us to experience this renewal in Christian faith life that we are intentionally embarking upon.

In addition to hearing the Word preached, we are encouraging everyone to join in a Bible Study in these weeks—the regular ones are ongoing, but a special “Lent in Song” study goes through the 3 week in March, on Wednesday nights after supper—and you’re welcome anytime! rd

We are also talking about renewal in relationships with one another—for example, through fellowship (see Soul Support) and learning new ways to support one another (come for the Dementia 201 talk).

And, what about the way you are serving? Oh! We have a myriad of activities!

This is a community of Christians, in all of our glory and struggles. We are on this journey together to grow as disciples, and also as people. We want to know one another and learn about each other’s challenges and joys. Christianity is a communal practice, and there is something for every person, in every age group in this church family. Please take a few moments to think out your plan for Lenten practices. I invite you to write it down and perhaps share it (I’d love to hear what you will be working towards)!

Meanwhile, I will look forward to being with you on this journey and may God’s grace and mercy become ever more evident in your life, every day.

Blessings and Love in Christ, Meg
