Looking Beyond Fertility EPDs:

The Traits That Build Reproductive Success by Jamie T. Courter, Ph.D. – State Beef Genetics Extension Specialist, University of Missouri Every producer has had one. She’s the cow that breeds early every year, calves unassisted, weans a heavy calf, and is still in the herd long after many of her contemporaries have been culled. She never seems to require extra attention, yet year after year she quietly contributes to the profitability of the operation. Unfortunately, we’ve all had the opposite, too. The cow that comes up open, requires assistance at calving, struggles to maintain body condition, or simply doesn’t stay in production long enough to repay her development costs. This raises an obvious question: can genetics create more cows like the first female described? Today, beef producers have access to powerful genetic tools that predict reproductive performance, including Heifer Pregnancy (HP), Stayability (STAY), Sustained Cow Fertility (SCF), and other breed-specific maternal evaluations. These EPDs have become invaluable for identifying bulls capable of siring productive replacement females and should serve as the foundation of any maternal selection program.

26 | 2026 FALL SIRE DIRECTORY

However, fertility is one of the most complex traits in beef cattle. Unlike traits such as Weaning Weight or Marbling, reproductive performance is influenced just as much, if not more, by the environment as it is by genetics. Nutrition, body condition, health, weather, forage availability, and management all affect whether a cow becomes pregnant. Because so much of the variation is due to non-genetic factors, fertility is considered a lowly heritable trait. That doesn’t mean genetics cannot improve fertility, it simply means producers should select for the traits that support reproductive success throughout a female’s lifetime. Fortunately, modern genetic evaluations don’t rely on a single measure of fertility. Instead, they provide multiple pieces of information that, when used together, give producers a more complete picture of a bull’s ability to sire productive, long-lived daughters. Fertility EPDs measure the reproductive outcome, while complementary indicator traits describe many of the biological characteristics that contribute to that outcome. Considering both allows producers to make more informed breeding decisions. For example, Mature Cow Weight (MCW) influences a female’s

nutritional requirements throughout her lifetime. Replacement heifers must reach approximately 55 to 65 percent of their expected mature body weight before puberty, and larger cows require more nutrients to maintain body condition after calving. Matching mature cow size to the feed resources available within an operation can improve a female’s ability to consistently breed back under commercial conditions. Likewise, Calving Ease Direct (CED) supports fertility by reducing dyst ocia, particularly in first-calf heifers. Females that calve unassisted generally recover more quickly after calving and are better positioned to conceive early in the next breeding season, helping maintain a desirable calving interval. Since fertility is controlled more by the environment than genetics, then environmental adaptation becomes another important piece of the puzzle. Hair Shedding (HS) has emerged as a useful indicator of heat tolerance because cattle that shed their winter hair coat earlier generally regulate

body temperature more effectively during periods of heat stress. Likewise, docile (DOC) cattle typically experience less stress during routine handling. Neither hair shedding nor docility measures fertility directly, but both influence the environment in which reproduction occurs and can support more consistent reproductive performance. This concept becomes especially important when considering genotype-by-environment interaction (G×E). The highest-performing genetics in one production system may not be the most profitable in another. Instead,

the goal is to select bulls whose daughters are genetically suited to the forage resources, climate, management, and production goals of the operation. Ultimately, no single EPD tells the entire story. Fertility EPDs such as Heifer Pregnancy (HP), Stayability (STAY), Sustained Cow Fertility (SCF), Functional Longevity (FL), and other breed-specific evaluations provide producers with the best available predictions of reproductive performance. Complementary traits, including MCW, CED, HS and DOC, add another layer of information by

describing the biological attributes that help females consistently express that genetic potential. The most fertile cow isn’t simply the one with the highest genetic potential. She’s the one whose genetics are best matched to the environment in which she is expected to perform. By combining direct fertility evaluations with complementary maternal traits, producers can make more confident sire selection decisions and build cow herds that remain productive, profitable, and resilient for years to come.
