Hundreds rally to oppose Kariong rezone The community came out in force on Sunday, August 23, to show its opposition to a proposed housing development in bushland zoned for conservation at 300 Woy Woy Rd, Kariong. Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council (DLALC) plans to build 50 houses on an area zoned C2 Environmental Protection due to the endangered wetlands, the presence of cultural heritage on and around the site, and that the site is habitat for many threatened species including the critically endangered Swift Parrot. Bambara Rd was led by Traditional Custodians Aunty Tracey Howie and Renee Sales, with locals participating in a traditional smoking ceremony. Coast Environmental Alliance spokesperson Jake Cassar said hundreds of people attended over the duration of the three-hour event, with about a dozen guest speakers including local conservationists, elders and members of the Aboriginal community. Guest speaker Ursula Da Silva, said the proposed 50 houses might not seem like a substantial amount.
