LATINAMERICAN CERAMICS
The Encounter of Mestisaje: The Ceramics of the Colonial Period
In the early colonial Americas, ceramics became a powerful medium through which cultural encounter and mestizaje were negotiated and made visible. Rather than replacing Indigenous traditions, Spanish rule folded Indigenous materials and technologies into new colonial forms, producing a layered process of transformation.
Indigenous potters continued to use familiar clays, tempers, forming methods, and firing techniques, even as they produced vessels that responded to new European tastes and regulations. A bowl might follow a European profile or function, yet its paste composition or firing traces would reveal an Indigenous technological lineage
These hybrid objects unsettle neat labels like “Spanish import” or “Native ware, ” because they materialize the coexistence and entanglement of both worlds. Seen this way, colonial ceramics are sites of Indigenous agency, where choices about what to maintain, adapt, or abandon show how communities navigated coercion, opportunity, and creativity within the colonial order
